Designer Biography
Nicole Ford is a graduating Design student majoring in Fashion (Honours) from Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand. Her Graduate Collection The Runaways, is based on her favourite movie ‘ The Runaways’ about the teenage girls rock band in the 1970s of the same name. The collection shows a dark side to the designer and her desire to live out a fantasy of being a rock star. Influences from film and history drive Nicole’s design influences and will continue to be a focus for inspiration.
“I like your style. A little bowie, a little Bardot, and a look on your face that says I could kick the shit out of a truck driver.” Kim Fowley. ‘The Runaways’ were a revolutionary teenage girl’s rock band in the seventies. At a time when men dominated the rock and roll industry. Parallel to this sex roles and the ideology behind their roles were just beginning to be questioned. There was a realisation that women could have jobs and earn money too. Through researching sex-role ideology a clear link was established between women’s views and the social climate. In the film there is a fine line between women and men and their roles. Joan Jett however is an exception; she dresses and acts very masculine in comparison with the other girls. The division of the main characters, Cherie and Joan through gender traits, will provide inspiration for my final concept. Experimenting with fabrics, textures and hardware will lead to a ‘Cherry Bomb’ like explosion which will bring to life the whole collection. Appealing textures that are distressed will show the rock and roll influence. Hardware such as studs will add detail and is crucial in capturing the zest of the collection. Designs that incorporate both hard and soft elements will emphasise the division of gender roles and will show the two characters within an outfit or garment.
