Welcome: Hi! My name is Nicole DiCenso and I was the previous team leader for the Management 200 group that worked with Gotta Have Sole for our project! Our team, Sole Solutions, consisted of Matt Lukasik, Christian DeBeauport, Laura Echezabal, and me. By now, you have contacted Lori Lowinger at Gotta Have Sole and she has chosen to work with your group for this semester’s project. Congratulations! Lori is an awesome sponsor to work with. My team’s project was to create a shoe-drive for elementary schools in order to increase the inventory for Gotta Have Sole’s back to school orders. Our team ran our pilot shoe-drive at Martinson Elementary School in Marshfield, Massachusetts and we collected 64 pairs of shoes! This packet will give you everything you need to run successful shoe drives this semester. We created this packet as our “learning” portion of the project. Our hope is that your team will use this packet to run numerous shoe drives this semester since our team worked out most of the kinks! We also created a learning project for your team to execute. Lori wants to start another Gotta Have Sole chapter somewhere else in the United States. Your goal is conduct the surveys that we created at elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as colleges, to find the ideal place to start the new chapter! In the appendix of this packet, you will find the surveys we created to send to schools. Feel free to edit them as you feel necessary. We believe that this packet includes almost everything you need for your project; however you will need to contact us or ask Lori for the posters and flyers that we had created. A copy of them is attached, but you will need the original file to edit. Good luck! -Sole Solutions

Helpful Hints: For Schools: •
Research the schools demographics before selecting them to call o Many online resources contain information on a school’s population, the average income of the town and the amount of parental participation
14 | P a g e
It is a good idea to find schools that have a population of more than 200, a relatively high average town income and a 5 out of 5 on parental participation Although schools that are close by may be the easiest to contact and meet with, they may not be the ideal schools to run a sneaker drive so make sure that you do your research o Consider schools that are from your hometowns. It is easier to contact a school that you have been to and maybe know some teachers/principal. Also you can visit the school over breaks to engage with the students and pick up/drop off shoes and posters. It would be a good idea to contact the schools you are interested in working with at the beginning of the year. This way, they have plenty of notice and can mark the shoe-drive in the calendar so it doesn’t overlap with any other events they have. Make sure you write a thank you note to each school that runs a sneaker drive If a school says that they cannot run a sneaker-drive in the near future, ask them if they would like to be added to a list of schools that another semesters classes could use a semester or full year from now Elementary schools are the best to use because the children will get help from their parents. By middle school, students do not care as much about school fundraisers and will not give their parents the messages. We would advise against running a sneaker drive at a high school / college. Make a memo for advisor of PTO/PTA to describe and inform parents at a meeting about Gotta Have Sole and the sneaker drive. Make a handout for the school to hand out to students during class, to give to their parents. This will aid in spreading awareness of the sneaker drive to family members and give parents more information about specifics. o In the handout, remember to put all information about the sneaker drive including information about the Gotta Have Sole foundation. Students and their parents like to know what they are donating to and it will help increase sneaker donations. Put specific Gotta Have Sole information on the handout, such as the website and Facebook page since many parents are now on social networking sites. o

For Prizes: •
•
Talk to the school you are working with before deciding on a prize. They may have a prize they always use or decide to opt out of one. Some schools try to stay away from competition and therefore do not want to reward just one class with a prize. o If this is the case, another option could be donating Gotta Have Sole playground balls to the school to reward them for their participation. Talk to Lori for more details. If the school does decide that they are okay with a prize for a single classroom / grade, try to survey a classroom or grade to see what prizes they want. There will 15 | P a g e
• • •
• •
be more participation if there is a prize that the students want rather than one that is picked for them. If you need funding for prizes try using the GoFundMe page to raise money and awareness for your cause If a prize consists of taking the students away from school grounds, you need to be thoroughly aware of all the schools policies and field trip requirements. Additionally, you can go to local stores, the smaller / more local the better that are in the area of the school you are working with, and ask them to donate supplies for the sneaker drive Doing these steps helps not just gain funding, but also helps raise awareness about children in need of sneakers and child homelessness For more ideas about prizes, go to the prize section of this packet
For Surveys: •
•
• •
• •
It would be a good idea to make the surveys in an online form. That way you save paper and can reach a greater amount of people. o Surveymonkey.com is an excellent resource If you must use paper surveys, attempt to use mass surveying, as in use one paper survey for an entire class while using more general questions to gain the most accurate feedback from a large pool Some questions might need to be re-formatted a little to make them more comprehensible for the students depending on their age range Survey everybody that was involved with the sneaker drive, including teachers, students, the principal, any advisors etc. The more feedback you get, the more you can improve on future sneaker drives. Make sure questions are not ambiguous and that their responses will result in actual useful information. At the end, when you collect all of the surveys, do a survey analysis so that you can use the results to improve and help further develop projects for the Gotta Have Sole Foundation, future Management 200 Groups, and yourselves!
In General: •
• •
Before printing all of the take-home flyers, ask the school you are working with if they have a system they use o For example, some schools use a system that makes it so each family only gets one flyer rather than each child at the school. This method saves paper. Try to get a group of volunteers from the school, you are planning to have donate, help out with the shoe drive When setting a date for the shoe drive, check with the school to make sure that they are not running any other programs during that time, you want your shoe drive to have its own two weeks to ensure maximum exposure and participation. 16 | P a g e

Be sure to emphasize that the sneakers need to be brand new, and to inform the parents that if they cannot get the designated size that they were assigned that they can still bring in other sizes, because every sneaker counts and is important to help a child in need. Use the concepts and skills that you learn in your Management 200 class, they will be very useful in running and improving your project and coming projects. Apply them to every aspect, and use Devil’s Advocate / debating so that your team can come up with the best ideas to improve a child’s life. This is not just a grade, but a chance to improve another human being’s life and you should not take this opportunity for granted. Learn as much as you can from this project and make it the best as it can be, not for yourself but for others.
Problem/Solution Guide: During the execution with this shoe drive, we did run into a few road bumps along the way. Below is a list of the problems that occurred and how they can be avoided in future shoe drives. A good amount of the shoe’s brought in were not brand-new Make sure that the students or teachers from the school that are helping you know that the shoe HAVE to be brand new otherwise Gotta Have Sole can’t accept them. Make the words “brand-new” on the posters and flyers bigger and bolder. It needs to be 17 | P a g e
obvious to everyone reading the flyers that the shoes cannot be worn at all. Have the teachers who receive old shoes send those shoes back home with the child who brought them in. (However all shoes that aren’t brand-new get donated to the Salvation Army so they are still going to help people in need). There was some confusion on the size of shoes the children were allowed to bring in The advisor we worked with at Martinson Elementary School mentioned to us that the size requirements for each grade were somewhat off-putting and confusing. He told us that some parents felt they weren’t allowed to donate shoes outside of the range specific. Lori wanted us to include specific sizes for each grade so that a variety of shoe sizes were brought in, but talk to her about how this problem can be fixed. One idea would be to make it more obvious that the sizes listed on the flyer are just suggestions and not strict guidelines. Some students felt they didn’t have enough information on why they were running the shoe-drive One of the 5th grade council students mentioned that a lot of her friends were confused as to why they were bringing in brand new shoes. They knew they were going to a charity but they didn’t know why. An idea would be to have the members of the group hold a whole school presentation on why they are running the shoe-drive. They could talk about what exactly Gotta Have Sole does and the effects that not having shoes has on children. Some parents felt that buying new shoes was too expensive but still wanted to help and didn’t know how Another student brought up a very good idea on how to fix this issue. The suggestion was to make the shoe-drive a shoe-drive/fundraiser. The option to bring in brand-new shoes would still be the first priority however students could also bring in smaller cash amounts and the group collecting the shoes could use the money they collect as well to buy the shoes themselves. This would also save parents a trip to the store; they could donate $20 instead of going out and buying the shoes.

But with the overall results, I think you are fine.” • “I thought your team did not need to be any more involved than you were.” • “Maybe someone could’ve talked to us to show it’s important for the littler kids. (Someone from your team.” • “No” x2 • “No, it was perfect.” • “No, I think they were very involved.” • “No, everyone was very involved.” • “No, it was ok.”
Survey Analysis- Students: For the scaled portion of the survey, the average response was a 4.44 which means that our team did a very successful job at presenting and relaying the information. The lowest score in that section was for how well the take home flyers presented the information which was a 4. The feedback we got on this question was that the flyers should more clearly emphasize that the shoes need to be brand new. The highest scoring question in this section was how well did Nicole present the information to you which was a 5. However, this section was incomplete because only four of the nine students were present at the original presentation. We were very pleased that the council members would consider working with us again.
20 | P a g e
The survey results show that a majority of students felt that the shoe drive was just the right length of time and that the council was very involved in the process. The students felt that the overall response of the school was very positive. Many responded that everyone who participated was very generous and that they felt they were partaking in a good cause. Most of the students felt that the there wasn’t anything that needed to be improved to help motivate students and faculty. One student, however, commented that she felt if students were also allowed to bring in money for Gotta Have Sole to buy shoes instead of going out and buying shoes themselves that more people would’ve participated. This is a good idea to consider for next semester. Again, a majority of the student felt that the information presented about Gotta Have Sole was sufficient but a few thought that the information could’ve been clearer and some students weren’t aware of how Gotta Have Sole helped. Seven of the students responded that there was enough information given about the shoe drive however two said that they felt more could’ve been presented. The problem here, most likely, is that more information was given to the advisor than to the students so to fix this, next semesters group could share all of the information that they are giving to their contact also to the students they work with. Almost all of the students thought that our team did not have to participate any more than we did however two suggested that members or our team could’ve presented the information to the entire school instead of just the council. This could be an area of improvement for the next group.

Survey Analysis – Advisors: The average score over all of the questions asked to the advisors was a 4.6. This tells us that before even analyzing the specific responses from the advisors, that their answers were generally very good. The lowest score we received was a 3.5 which we will target as an improvement area for the future. The first two questions asked the advisors how well they thought that both the take home, and in class posters displayed information. These were the only two questions that did not receive a 5/5. The advisors gave the take home flyers a 4 / 5 and the in class posters a 3.5/5. When asked if they had any suggestions for improvement both advisors made note of the sizes that were specified on the in class posters and the take home flyers, “Open up the sizing. All sizes for all grades. This shows us that putting barriers on what sizes that each grade had to donate might have hurt our donation 23 | P a g e
number rather than helping it, and is something that we have now taken into account when planning future shoe drives. Nicole received a score of 5/5 for how well she presented the information about the shoe drive from both advisors. We also received a 5/5 score when we asked if the advisors would recommend our shoe drive to any other schools or towns. We received the same score when we asked if the school would ever plan another event with our university/team in the future. This is very good news because it leaves the door open for future Management teams to go back to the same school and build a relationship with them, hopefully expanding and improving our shoe drive. Both advisors answered that the response from the school on having a shoe drive was great, and very positive. They said that no additional information needed to be given about Gotta Have Sole or about the shoe drive in general. Also the motivation for students to participate was good enough that nothing additional needed to be done. The final questions alluded to how well our group performed during the shoe drive, and how well we assisted with any issues. For all related questions, we received a 5/5. The advisors responded that we provided enough information that we did not need to be present any more than we were at the school, and that we did not need to be any more involved in the actual shoe drive any more than we already were.

Impact Survey Analysis: Based off of the survey analysis that we had nine students answer we uncovered some critical information that will help improve future shoe drives After conducting this shoe drive at Martinson elementary school, all 9 of the students that were surveyed said “yes” they believe that they made a difference in someone’s life. This demonstrated just how positive of an effect this shoe drive had on the students at Martinson. When the students were asked about the experience gained in being a part of the shoe drive, they all had similar responses revolving around the sense of giving that they gained from participating. They believe they gained a good feeling about donating and learning about an organization that leaves such a positive impact on shoeless children in need. One student in particular discovered they are actually more generous than they thought because they give more than they take.

The students learned a lot from this experience. Ranging from finding out that children in the United States are shoeless, as well as not taking for granted the things that you have. The thing that most of the students surveyed appeared to learn was that by helping others you truly do feel better about yourself. All the students believed that by participating in this shoe drive that it has increased their awareness of the needs of children in homeless shelters. Eight of the nine students surveyed said it had significantly whereas one said it has just changed their awareness a little bit, showing that the overall impact was successful. The students all are interested in learning more about the effect that not having shoes has on children; regardless of the fact that many of them know that it is a sensitive and emotional subject. One of the students believes that it is something that everyone should be aware of and another student also never realized how much of an impact donating a pair of shoes had on someone because they have always had shoes their entire life. After participating in the shoe drive, all of the students said that it made them want to participate in more community service projects. One of the students suggested that the student council of their school should set a day aside strictly to participate in various community service projects. When asked if the students would be interested in learning more about the organization Gotta Have Sole they all agreed that they do. They believe that it is a wonderful foundation and want to know more of the details about the history of the foundation as well as their motives behind the organization.
New Chapter Guide Nick and Lori Lowinger would like to start a new Gotta Have Sole chapter at another school in New England. They attempted to start a chapter at a school in Rhode Island; however, the attempt did not go as planned. They soon realized that they needed to do more research into to schools to find the perfect place for a new chapter! Lori asked our team to get you started on this project. Our idea was to create surveys that can be sent to elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as colleges to see which school was the most capable of starting a chapter. The survey that we 27 | P a g e
created is included below. Feel free to edit the survey as you see necessary. We recommend that you put the survey onto a SurveyMonkey page so that you can send out the surveys more easily and save on the cost of printing. Once you collect the results, be sure to analyze the information you have to decide which type of school is the best fit for a Gotta Have Sole chapter. After this step has been completed, resurvey just that type of school in a variety of towns/states to find which exact school should start the next chapter. Work with Lori on this decision. Your job is simply to find out where the best place for a new chapter would be. You are not responsible for actually starting the chapter there. That would be a good project idea for the following Management 200 group to work on with Lori!
