Is Your First Impression Working? Interestingly, a first impression can be positive, without being exactly right for you. Many people make a good first impression. They easily convert sales and, if they’re good at what they do, the opportunities around them start to expand. It’s that very expansion, however, that can be tricky. Your image must keep pace and be in alignment with your ongoing goals.

up the legal industry so that more lawyers can be happy in their personal lives while still growing a successful law firm. He felt confident and happy. His image had worked well for him up until a certain point. But by the time he came to me, he felt as if something was missing.

Brooks Brothers makes great clothes. But they are designed for someone who wants to feel more conservative and safe—the I recently asked a longtime client opposite of his personality. That how he felt before we began was the part that didn’t match up. working together. He said that at His vision is to help people do that time, he was confident in his things very differently than what ability to deliver what he offered to they have been programmed to people—but knew he was in a do. He does this by teaching outsignificant growth phase that would of-the-box concepts, and by being lead to new arenas of opportunity. sort of an out-of-the-box When he looked at himself and his individual. His Brooks Brothers image relative to the opportunities image was far from out of the box. he was winning, it didn’t match up. It was very in the box. You can make a great first impression, but if it isn’t congruent with what you’re trying to do, or sell, potential clients can sniff out that there’s something not totally adding up, even if they don’t know quite what it is. Here’s a good example. I have a client in the legal industry who entered his career wearing Brooks Brothers suits. He became very successful, growing his business into a multimillion dollar company. His mission is to completely shake

3

So we changed the way he was dressing. Since he is on a mission to shake up the legal industry, we shook up his wardrobe. We swapped boring plaid blazers for ones that were fun and full of personality. I found jeans for him that were comfortable, but also looked good on stage. And we found specific shoe designers that not only matched his out-of-thebox image, but became conversation starters with others who coveted the same brand.

You can make a good first impression all day long. But the real question is whether or not it drives the results you’re after. If the way you present yourself attracts a client base that will pay $5000 when you charge $50,000, you’ve got a mismatch that’s costing you money. Each day you have a choice. You can put on garments that simply clothe you. Or you can be strategic about the way you dress and ensure your image will increase your bottom line. The goal for you is to easily present yourself in a way that helps you reach your goals, whether that’s a financial, lifestyle, or making a connection.

Heart of Home & Family by Cheryl Flothe

Tech & The Family Tech brings convenience, entertainment, and the ability to communicate almost instantly to our lives. Gone are the encyclopedias and visits to the library ---we can look up just about anything on line in seconds. Apps for almost any subject---health, photography, games, and more—add more convenience and fun to our tech. And the best benefit of all is quick communication with our friends, loved ones, and other groups with whom we need to connect. While Tech brings so many advantages to our lives, we can’t let it be our main focus. Studies have shown a decrease in children’s reading and writing abilities when they spend too much time playing video games and watching video content. And kids’ attention spans aren’t what they used to be, partly due to so much rapid visual stimulation and being exposed to nonstop action. Some young people show less empathy to others with all the violence in many video games, which can lead to more confrontation in real life situations and less patience. When kids stay up late texting they don’t get enough sleep, which is not only bad for their health, but it’s harder for them to get going in the morning and to concentrate in school. And too much Tech can take away time needed for homework, exercise, chores, and family time. What can we do? Most of us use Tech---and probably more than we really need to. As adults, we can set an example by limiting the amount of time we spend checking our phones and spending Tech time. Let kids know that homework, chores, sleep time, and getting ready for school come before Tech. If they get into that habit, it makes life less hectic and

4

healthier. We need to communicate in person and spend real time with each other. Make a point of spending face-to-face time away from Tech talking to the kids, playing board games, and doing physical activities---walks, bike rides, exercising, and the like. Time spent outdoors, especially in natural settings, is becoming almost non-existent, but it’s important to “get back to nature” from time-to-time. Nature brings stress relief, a change of pace, and provides time to be with one another. And the more faceto-face time kids spend the better their ability to relate to others will be. It may take some imagination and planning to limit the time the family spends on Tech, but it will be worth it. Our memories of life won’t come from time spent using Tech, but from time spent with friends and loved ones talking, playing, and having adventures.

5 Ways to Get New Clients Jenstarmedia by Nicole Flothe #1 Client Referrals The majority of my new clients are from referrals from current clients. I love when someone I've been working with for a while says, "Let me introduce you to my friend, they would benefit from what you've been doing for me." It's a great compliment and helps make the connection with the potential new client easier. #2 Provide Good Content Online There are many ways to create lists of valuable resources for potential clients. You can post these lists on your social media. Hopefully your potential client will like your posts and begin asking questions. A great way to get to your target client is to boost your posts to them. Once they like your post you can then invite them to like your page. #3 Work with a Business Partner I've had friends that work in the same industry pass along referrals. Sometimes they said that it was because they didn't want to take on new clients or they didn't have the same skillset in social media. #4 Update Your Blog/News Routinely The average person types questions into Google search on a daily basis. If you can think of ideas that would be something someone would be asking, then create a blog post about that. What

6

will happen is that your blog post will come up in the search engine as relevant content. At the end of your blog you can request they sign up for your latest news. Also ask for comments as this gives you another way to start a conversation with a potential client. 5. Send out an E-Newsletter When you update your blog/news you can connect an e-newsletter to send out to those who have subscribed. If you provide valuable news, potential clients begin to understand your work and possibly learn how you can help them. You can also continue to provide news they might want to work with you again. I hope that you've enjoyed this quick list of how to find new clients. If you have any social media questions you'd like answered, please post on Facebook.com/jenstarmedia or visit www.jenstarmedia.com and you can leave a comment on one of the latest blog posts. Good luck in your business journey!

Heart of Health The link between stress and heart disease may be found in the brain By AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION NEWS

How well does your body react to a fight with a loved one? A face-off with the boss? A major loss by your favorite sports team?

individual treats the body.

Stressful events trigger a temporary increase in blood pressure for many people, but now a new study examines just what role the human brain plays in shaping cardiovascular changes during those times of tension.

“We’re sort of looking under the hood, so to speak, to try to understand what brain activity for a given person can tell us about why that person’s cardiovascular system is responding to stress in a certain way,” said neuroscientist Peter Gianaros, Ph.D., the study’s lead researcher. “The idea is to basically say, okay, can you look at someone’s pattern of brain activity during stress and then predict how much the blood pressure is going to go up?”

While these short-term changes may help the body respond to stress at the time of the event, they may increase a person’s risk for high blood pressure and even premature death from cardiovascular disease over the long run.

The study focused specifically on blood pressure because previous research has indicated that the more blood pressure increases during stress, the more likely the risk for cardiovascular disease in the future.

A new study, recently published by the Journal of the American Heart Association describes how researchers found a pattern of brain activity that predicted blood pressure spikes from stress among some people.

In the study, researchers used functional MRI to capture images of brain activity in 310 adults as they performed stressful mental activities. The images revealed a pattern of brain activity that researchers used to predict which stressed-out subjects would get a bump in their blood pressure.

It could depend on what kind of brain you have.

This brain pattern may help reveal the influence psychological stress can have on physical health – and how some risk factors for heart disease and stroke may depend on what’s inside a person’s head, perhaps as much as how well an

Researchers said the findings reflect the largest brain imaging study to date of cardiovascular stress physiology.

Heart of Travel: HIT THE ROAD IN AN RV! by Cheryl Flothe

Now that kids are going back to school, travel time’s limited to weekends and school vacations. A weekend’s just the amount of time to take a mini vacation. With the high cost of air travel, hotels, and dining out, an RV rental could be just the thing. Of course, the cheapest way to save on RV travel is to buy your own, but with some careful planning in advance, renting could be cost effective. As with any trip you take, start by establishing a budget, then research the costs of air or car travel, hotels, and dining out. Next, compare the cost of renting an RV with how much you’d pay on a trip by air or car. Of course with air travel you still need to rent a car. When doing your RV rental comparison decide what size and configuration you’ll need and figure costs of: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

RV rental & insurance Gas Daily mileage Name, location, & prices of RV parks or "Boondocking" (camping for free) Food

Once you’ve decided to rent your RV, start planning where you’ll camp, how long it will take to get there, and what activities there are to do on the way and in the camping area. The nice thing about RV travel is whoever’s not driving can spend time together seat-belted in the back. Other positive things about renting an RV is you can park near the activity and members of your party can come and go as needed. Lunches, naps, changing clothes, whatever you need to do. If someone’s had too much sun they can return to the RV and wait in comfort until everyone else returns---the ultimate convenience. Campsites can be found in all national parks---45,000 campsites and cabins in all! Find and reserve a site at www.reservations.gov. Some national parks have showers, toilets, and full water and electric RV hook-ups, while others are more limited. But, national parks sites are often some of the least expensive. Don’t forget there’s a charge for adults to enter a national park. Children 16 and under and military are free, however. See www.store.usgs.gov for more information. There are thousands of campgrounds throughout the United States from the bare to the luxurious. Go to: www.Go RVing.where-to-find.campgrounds or www.ReserveAmerica.outdoors.rv-camping for listings. For information and tips on RV Camping, go to www.RV Camping. There are also “boondocking” sites on national lands you can stay for free if you are near one. No hookups or amenities, though. Go to www.compendium.com/free camping. One of the best national camping sites with amenities is KOA (Kampgrounds of America)---they not only have RV sites; but sites for tents, and permanent structures such as cabins, Airstream trailers, and teepees! There’s a store, usually a pool, and even some nicer sites with patios. Go to www.KOA.com. No matter where you go, have the time of your lives in an RV---and take lots of pictures!

Stay Calm & Start Blogging I’ve had a blog for years at ShellyAristizabal.com That blog is based on my book “This is Your Year to Design & Live the Life of Your Dreams”. The book is 365 “pages” of inspiration, motivation and action steps that will take you on a journey to live the life you were born to love! I actually enjoyed doing the blog sharing from my book and hoping to inspire myself as I went along! : ) Blogging is not easy. Once you launch on a public platform, even if only 1 person a week visits your blog, you are committed to providing for that person (Yes, even if that person is your mom!) LOL! But my busy life seems to have a way of getting in the way sometimes, so I would go months without adding any new posts, then I would feel bad, which would block my creativity---you can see the dilemma… If I’m going to write on my blog, I want it to be awesome stuff or nothing! So here I am, starting up another blog!!! WTH? This is not a hasty decision. I’ve been contemplating this since the beginning of the year. But you know what stopped me? FEAR! Fear of commitment, fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of what other people will think.

I’m sure there are more tears hiding in the depths of my subconscious to be discovered later - LOL Why will this be different? #1 I am doing this blog with my daughter Emma! She is my motivation and my accountability! AND I am so excited to have something really cool she and I can have fun doing together!!! I have already seen – even just planning this blog – a bridge over some gaps that were showing up for us as she is now officially a teenager! I’m sure every mom of a teen will know what I am sayin’! So here we go. As I chat with my friends and the moms of Emma’s friends, I hear a lot of the same concerns, questions, problems, issues, hopes, dreams, and ideas. My hope is this blog will be a space for Emma and I to talk through many of those same items. And as we share on this public platform, we will stay close and be open, honest, and transparent. This will also give moms and daughters a reason to have a conversation! Please follow us on social media – like, comment , and share – this will encourage us to keep going or to make adjustments. Also, please leave us a comment with a question or concern you would like us to address. Trust me, we will eventually get to everything you can imagine as we navigate through these teen years! I look forward to sharing and caring!! XOXO Shelly

Tech Tips & Apps Are You Ready for some Football with your Tech? by Beth

Sept APPS

Gatrell

I've always enjoyed traveling in the summertime and this summer we went up to Tampa. During the trip I was using the Maps and they had an outdated map, so I quickly downloaded App #1 for this month, the Google Map, as it helped me find my way! While on my vacation I enjoy watching entertaining videos on the go and PureFlix has a great selection. After all our eating out I decided to get a few new fitness apps, Fitness Buddy & Fitness have been helpful workouts. Then I wanted to try a new social media management app and Later has all the bells and whistles. Two new photo apps, Reflection & Fisheye are perfect for making fun photos. The last few apps LWFC, Sprinkle of Jesus, and Influenster are helpful in my daily life.

This weekend starts the College Football season with the big guys soon to follow. If you're a fan you will love using your tech to keep up to date on all the latest news and information. Watching games on TV is great, but when you're not near one and with so many different games, you're bound to miss something. By visiting The NCAA and The NFL you can obtain all the information you need including live scores, standings, players' info and even ways to watch any games not available in your area.

by Nicole Flothe

You can visit your favorite team's website for upto-the minute game scores, player stats, ways to listen and watch, and more just like what's available from the Florida Gators and Miami Dolphins. Various sites offer news, highlights, discussions and more including Bleacher Report and Sports Illustrated. Maybe even play a little game on Draft Kings. Many of the sites also have mobile Apps available so you can keep up to date and even watch on the go. Visit online "Into Tomorrow" where you can download our Free App to Ask Dave what the next play on the tech field will be.
