T

he forth month of the year is here. I am truly amazed how the days zip by. The moments we journal about or share on facebook and twitter are captured for our reflection of where we once were and where we are heading. April is a special month for me as I get to celebrate my birthday. This year I had several fun family parties and a surprise luncheon with my Mother-in-law Cheryl, Mom Sue, and Aunt Dottie. We went to Brambles English Tearoom, enjoyed the Royal Wedding tea of William and Kate, and had some delicious pastries and sandwiches.

...exciting trips... Easter is another fun part of this month and I'm excited to see my children enjoy the decorating eggs and attending Church Service to celebrate the gifts from God. After Church, the kids have our traditional Easter egg hunt and then we have a nice Easter Dinner to finish off the night.

Our newest Website Design and Social Media creation is www.avemariadance.com. My daughter is a little Ballerina and so it was a perfect barter for dance lessons.

ART

We are Celebrating Art and have found many talented people to showcase this month that shine their hearts in the community. Our first Artist, Donna Sharam, was born in Sydney, Australia in 1967. As a young child, Donna and her family moved to Coonabarabran where she spent an idyllic childhood riding horses and playing in the countryside. Donna completed her schooling at Calrossy Girls School in Tamworth, and then attended Sydney College of the Arts where she completed a BA in Fashion and Textile Design. She also has a Dip Ed in Visual Arts and Design & Technology. Donna spent many years working in the fashion and homewares industry creating her unique brands, “Bongo Bop” and “Kleva Concepts." These concept brands were sold through a variety of specialty stores in Sydney. She now lives in the beautiful rolling hills of Byron Bay in Northern NSW and is satisfying her creative juices by applying her instinctive skills to paint on canvas. Her background in textile and design is evident in this work. Bold textures, exaggerated shapes and forms collide with vivid colour in a series of works that shout originality. Whilst Donna’s art practise is only 6 years old she has had four solo exhibitions in the Brisbane and Byron Bay area and participated in many group shows including Art Melbourne 2009. Her emerging talent has been recognised by many. To date well over 500 works have sold to art lovers and these works now live in private collections from Sydney to Paris and beyond. Above all Donna loves life and is passionate about her painting and the amazing land in which we live. ARTIST STATEMENT

Painting is my passion. Passion (pash-unh /n.) is an emotion, compelling feeling, enthusiasm or desire for something. Colour is my Vision. Colour (Kul-uh /n.) is a sensation produced on the eye by rays of light.

Artist Donna Sharam Cover Art featured in Weekender. My infatuation with colour flowed into a career as a fashion designer and now manifests itself in my art. I live in a most beautiful part of the world, the rolling hills and rainforests of the Byron Bay hinterland is my home. My wonderful family, the quirky villages, amazing landscapes and eclectic mix of people ignite my passion to paint. The overwhelming sentiment of my art is my ‘love of life’. My art practice is influenced by many great artists, including Whiteley, Done, Miro, Picasso, Hundertwasser and Australian Indigenous Art. Distorted geometric shapes and bold textures speak of my background in textiles. Vibrant colour is my palette. I visit the theory that the built environment and natural architecture can live in harmony. I interpret this in my own unique style; I want the viewer to see the absolute joy and touch the work and feel the privilege of living in this amazing land. Website : www.donnasharam.com

I have always loved colour, from early age I dressed up in the most colourful outfits, dyed my hair purple and wore different colour shoes. Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Donna-Sharam/231140883263

In my attempt to reach out to the community, I started small: my photography community. And...considering that this place is heaven for destination weddings and tourists in general, you pretty much can't throw a rock without knocking a photographer in the head! So, I decided that each of you, yes you....and you...oh, and you, hiding in the back corner there... You will all be featured on my little "stage," here on the bloggity. It doesn't matter how long you've been a "pro" or how long you've considered yourself a "pro," we all want to know a little bit about yourself and what makes you passionate about photography. Slowly but surely I'll bring all of you out in the "spotlight."

Traditional Dinner Cheryl Flothe shares her thoughts on traditional foods and a few special recipes!

A

s our family is of Norwegian descent, I have become fascinated with all things Norwegian. While corresponding with our Norwegian relatives, I found they were eating traditional foods around this time and during the month before Easter. They mentioned celebrating “Shrovetide” and eating buns with cream in them. After some research I found the Nordic Nibbler.Com site had a writeup about Fastelavnsboller buns that sounded like those the relatives were talking about. The writer in the Nordic Nibbler explained the tradition: “It's Fastelavn this month! In Christianity this festival (known as Shrovetide in English) marks the three days running up to Lent, which was historically a period of fasting and abstinence. Fastelavn also traditionally marks the beginning of a period of feasting before the austere Lent period. It is said that one tradition at this time in Norway was to eat nine meals in each corner of the house. Old Pagan rituals also form a traditional part of Fastelavn in Norway, and one such tradition is the 'Fastelavsnris,' where birch twigs are placed in a vase and decorated with garishly coloured feathers. Apparently birch was viewed as a symbol of fertility. Another tradition at this time of year in Norway is to make Fastelavnsboller – sweet buns that are filled with whipped cream. I suppose they once would have been the perfect way of fattening yourself up before Lent; now, instead, they are a deliciously decadent treat.” The recipe from the Nibbler was in metric, so further research showed that these buns were popular in Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden, as well.

9 HEARTBEAT CONNECTION APRIL 2011

I found the Danish recipe was very close to the Norwegian, and was in English measurements. They are called, “Cardamon Cream Puffs or Semlor.” Happy Shrovetide and Happy Easter! - Cheryl Flothe

Fastelavnsboller Buns– Traditional Nordic Buns DOUGH:
1 cup milk, heated to 115° 1⁄2 cup sugar
2 tsp. ground cardamom 2 1⁄4-oz. packages active dry yeast
1 egg 4 cups flour
1 tbsp. baking powder 1 tsp. kosher salt
6 tbsp. unsalted butter, cut into 1⁄2" cubes, softened
1 tbsp. heavy cream 1 egg yolk
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting FILLING:
3⁄4 cup sugar 3 tbsp. cornstarch 1 cup heavy cream
1 tbsp. ground cardamom 3⁄4 tsp. kosher salt 1-1⁄2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1⁄2 cups milk 3 eggs 6 tbsp. unsalted butter, cut into 1⁄2" cubes
Instructions: (1.) Make the filling: Whisk together sugar, cornstarch, cardamom, and salt in a 2-qt. saucepan; whisk in milk and eggs. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook, whisking constantly, until thickened, about 1 minute. Remove from heat; whisk in butter. Transfer mixture to a bowl; press a piece of plastic wrap onto surface of filling. Refrigerate. (2.) In a bowl, whisk cream and vanilla to stiff peaks. Fold whipped cream into chilled filling; transfer to a piping bag fitted with a fluted tip. Chill for 2 hours. (3.) Make the dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle, combine milk, sugar, cardamom, and yeast; stir together and let sit until foamy, about 10 minutes. Add egg; mix to combine. Add flour, baking powder, and salt; mix until a dough forms. Replace paddle with hook attachment; knead on medium speed for 2 minutes. While kneading, slowly add butter in batches, mixing until completely incorporated before adding the next batch, 3–4 minutes. Continue kneading for 4 minutes more after last of butter is added. Transfer dough to a lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap; let sit until doubled in size, about 1 hour. (4.) Heat oven to 400°. Transfer dough to a work surface and divide into 16 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and place 8 balls each on 2 parchment paper-–lined baking sheets; cover both baking sheets loosely with plastic wrap and let sit until dough has risen slightly, 30 minutes. In a small bowl, stir together cream and egg yolk. Uncover dough balls. Using a pastry brush, brush each dough ball with egg wash. Bake, moving baking sheets from front to back of oven and from top rack to bottom rack halfway through cooking, until golden brown, 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool to room temperature. ( 5.) Using a knife, cut 1⁄2" from the top of each bun and set aside. Pull out most of dough from inside of each bun; discard. Pipe filling into each cavity; top with reserved lids. Dust with confectioners' sugar. MAKES 16 BUNS (Note: This recipe was first published in Saveur in Issue #128)

Why is Technology so interesting?

Great Travel Apps: Disney Maps, fotopedia, & Seattle Essential Guide.

To some technology is an amazing tool for their everyday lifestyles. For others, technology can be frightening and something they stay away from or ask their grandchildren to help them with! I love technology and spend many hours reading articles and learning about new programs that offer more advanced features and usefulness for my field of interest. I have a great friend, Beth Gatrell, who provides tech tips for her father's company, "Into Tomorrow" Each week she provides interesting information regarding what new technology is avaliable and how it can be useful. Here is her tech tip from last week...

Into Tommorow's Tech Tip of the Week Make your technology work for you!

Whether you want to promote your business or find the best one for your needs, let your technology work for you. Anyone with a Facebook account has a free tool right at their fingertips since they can post whatever they want on their news feed and send that message, picture, link, video and more to however many people they choose to connect with on the social site. Those posts can include specials or information on businesses they are able to offer as well as posts asking for referrals. You can also choose to purchase ads on the site which will display on every page that is logged on. Twitter also allows the ability to reach countless people with a simple message. You can make groups using your email or text messaging contacts and send alerts for your business' information as well as receiving them from your favorites. You can also create a web site using many different companies or programs including Intuit, Yola, Weebly and more. pps to use when travelling! Where would you rather travel to: Paris, Florida, or Seattle?

If you want to go to Paris I found this app called "fotopedia" that gives you over 1000 photos and you can take a tour right on your iPhone. The photos are beautiful and the nice thing is you can save the favorite locations so that when one day you take your trip to Paris you'll be able to plan accordingly. Our Aunt Dottie is from the Seattle, Washington area and she recently came to Florida for a visit. For those that are interested in touring Seattle, the "Seattle Essential Guide" is a guide to top attractions and local secrets. It has updated content, offline maps and photo thumbnails. And since I live in Florida, I love the "Disney Maps" app. Florida is the ultimate destination for Disney World and Theme parks, Beaches, and alligators. At the Theme Parks this app is helpful as it tells the times for the lines, helps provide Maps of the particular park or hotel, offers bathroom locations and also photo locations. I was able to use it while we had an awesome spring break in Orlando.

Who? What? When? & Where?

Kate & William's Royal Wedding Prince William and Miss Kate Middleton are to be married at Westminster Abbey on April 29 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams. The Bishop of London, the Right Reverend Richard Chartres, will give the address and the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, will conduct the service. Kate was given an 18-carat white gold engagement ring worn by Williams late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. The ring - which features a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire and diamonds - was designed by British jewelery house Garrard and was selected by Lady Diana Spencer from a selection presented to her by the then-Crown jewelers for her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981. Although it was valued at £28,500 at the time, it was an unusual choice by a member of the Royal Family as it was not unique and any member of the public could buy the same ring from the Garrard catalogue. Prince William is said to have chosen the ring as a way to include his mother in the excitement of his proposal.
