letter from the editor
Welcome to February---a month full of romance, love, birthdays and parties. Our kids finished their basketball session with Southwest Florida Basketball, had fun and learned new skills. Last month we had a Mary Kay makeup party for our daughter, Elizabeth, and her friends to celebrate her sixth birthday and they loved every minute of it. For my mother’s birthday, we took her to Brambles Tea Room in Naples where we had a special afternoon tea served in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. In this issue, we’re excited to share websites offering crafts and savings. As the kids continue to grow, it's great to keep up with new ways to entertain them. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we have a delicious heart-healthy recipe, some beautiful love songs in Featured Musicians, e heart questions for Ask the Nurse, and more. Keep checking the websites for new company giveaways. Our most recent heartfelt raffle is an awesome heart ballet bag from www.AveMariaDance.com. It's free to enter and I'm sure someone will be blessed with the prize.
With love, Nicole Flothe

Athletics - So many choices
Making a decision on what sport you will participate in can be a difficult choice. Determine your enjoyment of the sport or activity by trying them out and watching them locally, on youtube videos, or on tv. If you like to dance or always dreamed of being a ballerina, check out some local dance companies and their schedules. My daughter loves to dance so we did some research and found Ave Maria Dance Academy at Ave Maria was a perfect fit. Their mission is to bring the joy of music and movement to students of all ages and help build lasting memories for all those who come through their doors. They offer several different class schedules and provide beginner lessons. They also teach the children proper body positions that help them develop great posture and learn a routine for an end of year dance recital.
Zumba instructor, Jesenia Zapata, at Crunch Gym. The other sport that has been predominant at our home is basketball. We found a great organization that the kids have been participating in called Southwest Florida Basketball. They have sessions and learn new skills with competitions between teams with weekly games. This session finished up last weekend with several championship games and kids running back and forth down the court for great exercise.
www.avemariadance.com Another option is to join a local gym that offers exercise programs you can enjoy. Some may be too advanced for beginners, but you can work up to those levels. I recently joined Crunch gym and my monthly membership includes all the Zumba dance classes, pilates, yoga, and more. Their Zumba instructor, Jesenia Zapata, says that combining Latin and International music with a fun and effective workout system gets people excited and motivated, burns calories and improves health.
Whichever sport you decide to chose for yourself and your family, make sure you follow your heart. To visit their websites go to www.avemariadance.com www.crunch.com or www.swflbasketball.com

Heart Questions Answered... Although cholesterol is important and necessary for the body, high levels of cholesterol in the blood have been linked to damage to arteries and Heart disease.
W
hat causes Cholesterol problems? Wikipedia's definition of Cholesterol from the Greek chole- (bile) and stereos (solid) followed by the chemical suffix -ol for an alcohol, is an organic chemical substance classified as a waxy steroid of fat. It is an essential structural component of mammalian cell membranes and is required to establish proper membrane permeability and fluidity. In addition, cholesterol is an important component for the manufacture of bile acids, steroid hormones, and vitamin D. Cholesterol is the principal sterol synthesized by animals, predominantly in the liver; however, small quantities can be synthesized in other eukaryotes such as plants and fungi.

High Cholesterol is caused by several things one of them being the foods we consume. If we eat large portions of red meat, pies, sausages, hard cheese, pastry, cakes, and biscuits: to name a few, we will see our LDL (bad cholesterol) rise. People that have a sedentary lifestyle and don't exercise will also risk the development of higher levels of LDL. How much we weigh, smoking, and alcohol are other factors that have an impact on increasing our cholesterol. As per the Mayo Clinic, the top 5 foods to lower your numbers are... 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Oatmeal, oat bran and high fiber foods Fish and omega-3 fatty acids Walnuts, almonds and other nuts Olive oil Foods with added plant sterols or stanols

Twitter for Good is a book written by the head of social innovation and executive leadership at Twitter, Inc.
Shaquille "Shaq" O'Neal is a four-time NBA champion and a three-time NBA Finals MVP.
In 2008, Howard Schultz, the president and chairman of Starbucks, made the unprecedented decision to return as the CEO eight years after he stepped down from daily oversight of the company and became chairman.
An honest reflection and testimony of one Christian's discovery of God's plan for abundance and increase in our lives.
It's the official word from Twitter on how to harness the power of the platform for any cause. As recent events in Japan, the Middle East, and Haiti have shown, Twitter offers a unique platform to connect individuals and influence change in ways that were unthinkable only a short time ago.
But if you follow the game, you also know that there's a lot more to Shaquille O'Neal than just basketball. From growing up in difficult circumstances and getting cut from his high school basketball team to his larger-than-life basketball career, Shaq lays it all out in SHAQ UNCUT: MY STORY.

The Holiday Spot (www.theholidayspot.com), tells us St. Valentine’s Day origins date to the early Roman fertility celebration, Lupercalis, which was celebrated on February 15th. With the spread of Christianity, many pagan or Roman holidays were renamed for Christian martyrs. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius moved the celebration to February 14th, the day the 3rd century Roman priest, Valentine, was martyred. Valentine conducted secret marriage ceremonies for Roman soldiers who were forbidden by Emperor Claudius II to marry. Claudius thought married soldiers would be too attached to their families, thus weakening his army. Valentine was condemned by the emperor for not renouncing his religion. During St. Valentine’s imprisonment, legend says he wrote a letter to the daughter of one of his jailors signing it, “From Your Valentine.” The day was not related to romance until the 14th century when a scholar’s research showed the poet Chaucer’s connection. Chaucer wrote a poem associating February 14th as the day of a royal wedding, the day birds were believed to mate, and St. Valentine’s Day. Thus a tradition starting in the Middle Ages was born and St. Valentine’s day has evolved into one of the biggest holidays celebrated in the U.S. today. Submitted by Cheryl Flothe

Makeup Party No matter how busy you are, you must take time to make the other person feel important. - Mary Kay Ash While some girls like Barbies and some like ponies, my daughter has a love for makeup. I recently met Lori Pereira, a Mary Kay Makeup consultant, and learned the secrets of keeping my skin healthy and rejuvenated. I did a makeover with her and thought it'd be fun to have her show my daughter how to apply makeup the right way and instill a belief in her that she is beautiful inside and out. We scheduled a makeup party and the kids got to wash their faces before they applied the different shades of color to their eyes and lip gloss of their choice. They learned how to use the soft part of their finger when applying cosmetics and to put on the blush to highlight their cheekbones.
I see beauty.
Caitlyn Smiles
The kids learned the secret Mary Kay hand sign to show Lori if they ever see her in the supermarket. Psst...put your ring finger and middle finger down and make an M sign. Once the makeup was applied and they all looked beautiful, they learned the model pose. It was a great experience for the children and one I would recommend to others that would like to teach their girls how to feel and look spectacular.

Adelaine creates a work of art in its purest form: raw, edgy, and filled with heart and soul. The band’s mission is bringing back a long lost piece of what music today has lost, and along with it a glimmer of light that is faith filled hope in this dark world. They plan to take their mission on the road and beyond armed with the “Take Heart” EP.
