letter from the editor
It's a New Year! Have you started getting 2012 down on all your checks or documents you have to write? It's always tricky the first couple of weeks but I seem to have gotten the hang of it now. As a New Year resolution I've made the traditional one, Exercise, and have started working out at Crunch Gym. It's a great place to be and once I have an idea of the workout schedule like Yoga, Pilates, and Zumba, I'll be reviewing it in the next magazine. For now I'm enjoying the new equipment and getting into great shape.

Kids of all ages benefit from all kinds of consumer electronics and technology innovations. This feature covers the various tech available today and ... into tomorrow, as we explore technology's role in education, products and services for children.
http://sweetdreamsforkids.org/ We have started this organization as a family. Our dream is for all kids in the hospital to have cute, cozy, and comfortable new pajamas. Our youngest child, who is now 6 years old, was born with cancer. We saw her in hospital pajamas too many times. This is the reason we have started Sweet Dreams for Kids. We want to give back to others and this is the lesson we are trying to teach: when you give to others you will become happier. Sweet Dreams for Kids has donated over 3000 new pajamas to various hospitals in Minnesota and other Children’s Hospitals around the country. We want that number to grow. Sweet Dreams for Kids was the subject of several feature stories on television news programs as well as in magazines. We feel it is hard enough knowing your child is ill, but hospital pajamas are that constant reminder. We know this will bring a little more sunshine to everyone.

Finding Connections with Family When your kids laugh with each other those are the moments to capture. Find out what interests them and get creative. Now with technology it is easier to stay in touch with family that you love. Skype is useful for those long distance family that you don't get the chance to see every day. You can have a scheduled time and video chat with them. Skype allows you to live in the moment with your family, laugh at what you look like on the screen and love each other. Some children are interested in basketball, some kids arts and crafts. When you invest in time with your kids you'll figure out what it is that really fuels their passion. My sons are currently involved with basketball and I have one son that says he's going to be in the NBA. It's fun to watch them enjoy the basketball games on TV and to spend time with them outside. My daughter has a passion for dancing and arts and crafts. If you put some music on she's shares her version of dance moves and enjoys when we watch. When I participate with my kids in their areas of interest we develop a stronger bond. Make family dinner time a special time to share what happened during the day. Prepare for dinner conversation by thinking of things to talk about. Each time you invest in your family, I believe, will produce more ways to Live, Laugh and Love!
Learning about Sponsorship Our children have been involved with Southwest Florida Basketball league now for several years. Each session our kids improve with the skills that they practice and it has been a pleasure to see them enjoy the game. Recently I was interested in learning more about the sponsorship programs that they offer to our community. SWFL Basketball is our community basketball league. Sponsorships are needed for success of the league. The purpose is to provide financial support for uniforms, gyms, equipment, officiating and scholarships. If you are interested in either sponsoring or assisting in finding a sponsor, they would greatly appreciate your assistance. They have different programs ranging from $100 $2000 dollars; each offers special recognition and company advertising. It's a way for businesses in the community to give back to the children and also allow others to become aware of the sponsors. Heartbeat Magazine has recently sponsored two teams and we are honored to be involved. We look forward to this new session and the great opportunity our children have to be involved with a heartfelt organization. To visit their website go to www.swflbasketball.com

Health Questions Answered... 1. Evaluate your Diet. Do you generally eat more salty food or things that are high in fat? Get yourself a journal and write for a few days what you are eating. By doing this you can begin to see where you can change some of your eating habits and cut back on the salty, fatty foods.
5
ways to improve your blood pressure I was just reading an article about ways we can improve our blood pressure. What is blood pressure? The wiki definition: The pressure of the blood in the circulatory system, often measured for diagnosis since it is closely related to the force and rate of the heartbeat and the diameter and elasticity of the arterial walls. Wow, isn't it amazing how complicated our inner workings are? I'm glad I don't have to manage my blood pressure, but more and more people are being told by their doctors that they have to start blood pressure pills or change their lifestyle. Here are 5 ways you can take action, and, hopefully, either prevent having to start medication or improve your blood pressure so that you stay on a healthy path.

2. Have you ever heard of eating a banana to provide you with good potassium? Potassium is actually a great source to help improve your blood pressure, as it works to filter out the salt. If you don't like bananas, dark vegetables and other fruits can also be a great source. 3. Decrease your weight and your body has a better chance of working properly. With too much weight, blood pressure increases and causes the inner system to be overworked. Make plans to change your diet and increase your exercise. 4. Add low-fat milk or foods that are high in Calcium to your diet. Your total calcium a day should be 1000 mg and could include yogurt, cheese or now fortified orange juice. 5. Exercise and improve your shape! Move your body and work your heart. As a couch potato you are comfortable but eventually it will increase your risk factors. Move your muscles and they will be stronger to support you when you need them the most.

Tracing Your Own Family History
Cheryl Flothe's
Recipe Corner Good Luck Hoppin’ John and My Family Roots My sister and I were born in Georgia and have been tracing our family history for years. This recipe is one from my Southern roots in the Low Country (coastal plain of the Atlantic Ocean) of South Carolina and Georgia. It was served by relatives when my sister went to visit a few years back and is a traditional Southern dish, often served on New Year’s Day for good luck in the coming year. It uses black-eyed peas, a symbol of riches and prosperity. This dish is said to be even luckier if it’s served with collard greens, which are the color of money! The Austin Chronicle reported if one eats Hoppin’ John leftovers the next day, it becomes “Skippin Jenny,” and symbolizes further prosperity because one is frugal. This dish is usually served with corn bread.
The pace of our genealogy research has picked up the past six years with increased information available on the Internet. Sites such as Ancestry.com ( www.ancestry.com), Archives.com (www.archives.com), and fold3.com (www.fold3.com), are valuable resources for any budding or professional family history researcher. Here are a few tips: 1. Ask your parents or other relatives for the complete names and birth dates of your grandparents and great-grandparents then go to Ancestry.com to look for their census information and more. Ancestry says it is,”The World’s Best Family History Resource with 7 billion geneaological records from across the globe.” The U.S. census is collected every 10 years and is posted on Ancestry from the 1940’s back to 1790. These handwritten documents can often give you addresses of where your ancestors lived, names and ages of who was living with them (family and other people), what people did for a living, and sometimes even where they were born. There are many other references that can be traced on that site such as military and war service, some newspaper records, births, deaths, marriages, and immigration. I’ve even discovered copies of letters written by my great-great-great-grandfather and great-greatgrandfather regarding Revolutionary War Service! 2. Archives.com and fold3.com have a wealth of information including historical pictures and documents. You will be amazed at what you can find.
HOPPIN’ JOHN INGREDIENTS: 1 cup chopped onion 1 tablespoon bacon drippings 2 cans (about 16 ounces each) black-eyed peas, slightly drained, or about 3 cups cooked black-eyed peas 1 cup chopped cooked ham ¼ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper 3 cups hot cooked rice salt to taste sliced sweet onion, optional PREPARATION: In a large saucepan sauté chopped onion in bacon drippings until tender. Stir in black-eyed peas, ham, and cayenne pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes; stir in hot cooked rice and salt. Serve Hoppin' John hot with sliced onion and cornbread. Serves 4 to 6

Clipping Money Save Money one Store at a time! ClippingMoney.blogspot.com is an online blog maintained by a mother of 3 beautiful children, and, in today's society, saving money is a must. She enjoys every minute of shopping and can't wait to get to the check out to see how much she has saved. I was browsing on Facebook one day and found Clipping Money's fan page. Her posts are updates of what she has found online and in stores to help you save money or get things for free. I recently got a free eBook called Organized Simplicity (a $16.99 Value). It's a perfect book for the new year and I am grateful to have Clipping Money! On her blog there are tabs that list different companies and their current sales. You can click on Target and the blog lists all the recent savings, or if you shop at Walmart, when you click on that tab you get updates about what she's been able to save and what's on special at the moment.
Enjoy reading about her Shopping trips as she highlights what she was able to get with all the coupons and posts pictures with the results. She's updated on her site that she saved $15,686.41 in 2011. It's amazing how much you can truly save when you put your coupons to work! You can follow her site by email and you can also contact her to share a review or giveaway. The last section I like on her site is the Link Up tab. Here is where you can see other websites that are offering giveaways and special promotions. Have you ever heard of Mister Linky's Magical Widgets? It's a widget you can add to your website and then others can share their specials or words of interest and link back to their website. It's a fun way to connect and share content on the internet with each other. You can also view her Sponsors on the side bar and see the great connections she has with One2One Network, B2B Business 2 Blogger, My Blog Spark, BzzAgent, Pitch it to Me Member, and more. Make sure you connect with her on Facebook if you'd like to be updated on ways to Save Money! by Nicole Flothe
I like the Giveaway tab. In this section she uses Rafflecopter to make it easy to track entries and promotions that are being offered. I recently entered the Apple ipad2 giveaway.

If this book had a QR code I could scan with my phone and jump to their website. There are a lot of free apps that are helpful for scanning QR codes. The Kindle is another source for enjoying a quick read while working out. Here are some great tips from "Into Tomorrow," by Beth Gatrell, on the new technology that is available.
Into Tomorrow's Tech Tip of the Week New Year New Fitness Tech With the New Year many people are starting new fitness routines and now more than ever tech is part of it. If you don't have the time or desire to hit the gym you can head online to sites like Livestrong and Freetrainers for free online videos and instruction on top workouts and nutrition. Workoutz.com and exercise.com are some other sites with many free instructional videos on exercise that you can do right from home. You can also look up your favorite exercises on YouTube for instruction on how to do them. If you would rather leave the house and get on a bike, try out iBike which lets you keep track of your progress, monitor your health, share your results and more. And we all want to get our kids active and GeoPalz helps with their pedometer that not only counts steps but lets you win prizes for them! Using the Powerball lets you not only exercise, but also rehabilitates your muscles using only your hand! If you are a runner you can even download Runkeeper on your mobile device to help keep track of your fitness on the go. While you are running around be sure to stop by "Into Tomorrow" and check out all the latest tech for fitness and more!
