T

ime to get ready for the School year again. A few months of vacation have been fun and relaxing. We had some family vacations, friends and family birthdays, new babies born and lots of memories made. The sunsets have been gorgeous, and spending time at the beach full of fun and adventure.

I found that my statement is to Create, Conceive and Connect on Love and Beauty. Heartbeat Connection Magazine is all about this! If you'd like to identify your Purpose visit my friends website www.melissahaupt.com. Enjoy the magazine!

Some of my family spent the summer in Alaska and we skyped them daily to check in and enjoy the stories they shared of the bears they saw and wildlife. They caught many sockeye salmon and even went halibut fishing and caught shark in the ocean. I can't believe the year is officially here that all my children are in school. What will I do with the full day that they are learning away. I'm sure I'll fill it with errands to run and chats with friends on social media. I have a great job that allows me to work from home. I'm on the phone at night coordinating visits for Nurses and talking to families about home health care services. I took my friend Melissa Haupt's recent free identify your purpose statement. It was an easy read and I circled the words that were most meaningful to me.

At the Library

Do you take time to read? Why are books so helpful? Straight from the heart!

F

inding time to read is one of the most important things to do. The definition of READ is to look at carefully so as to understand the meaning of (something written, printed, etc.): to read a book; to read music. With a better understanding, more informed decisions can be made. Books help children develop language skills, the ability to research and form opinions. More and more books are moving to online and newspapers are going virtual. I believe books won't be eliminated, we will just be reading them virtually.

Our local public library has a lot of options to support our community. They have speakers come to town to share their stories and teach how to self publish; they offer classes to learn about technology or other areas of interest; and they also offer kids' classes to inspire them to read. While browsing our local library online, there were several new options. You can download an audiobook right to your smartphone or read an ebook on your computer. They also offer pre-loaded audiobooks that can be checked out. There is a section called e-Resources that has articles, news, and current events. If you have an interest in Genealogy there is a section for that too.

I usually go to the library once every two weeks to find some new books to read about autobiographies or inspirational stories. I'll also browse the kids books and let my kids pick a few we can read at home together. They say that when you read out loud to your kids they learn the pronunciations of words and enhances their spoken language skills.

Alaska Holiday Summer Vacation

It took them 8 days to get back down to Florida, and they stopped at Yellowstone National Park. Interesting Facts about Alaska -

This summer my boys and husband Jim spent a wonderful time with family in Alaska. They hiked the mountains and fished the streams. Made pancakes with Grandma Cheryl and rafted the Kenai Russian River. Alaska is a land of beauty and we are thankful our kids will have these lasting memories of Summer fun. They drove all the way to Alaska from Florida and the roads were bumpy but they stopped along the way to see the sites.

ack to School! Bargains, Discounts & Coupons

You can find many specials at the Mall right now for Back to School sales. I spent the day with our friends the other day. We were on

the hunt for some new shoes and backpacks. While we were there, the girls got to play at the playground and burn some energy. Caitlyn, Madison and Elizabeth are in the photo above. We finally found our shoes... We had lunch at the mall and went into Rack room shoes. There was a pair of shoes Liz was happy about, but we wanted to keep looking to see if we could find a better price. Rack Room Shoes had sale with a 2nd pair half off. We then went down the mall and into all the shoe stores, and since Liz had those first shoes in her mind she wanted to go back. Caitlyn found some really nice shoes in Journey but they didn't have her exact shoe size.

7HEARTBEAT CONNECTION AUGUST 2011

Liz and I went further down the mall while Caitlyn made her decisions on her shoes. We stopped at Dillards and went to the kids' shoe section. The big 40% off sign was what I liked to see! We picked up the first pair of Sketchers that were a pretty blue and asked for her size. They had them, she tried them on and fell in love. She instantly wanted to wear them and was so happy to finally have her shoes. Caitlyn ended up going back to Rack Room Shoes and got some really nice blue vans. It's funny out of all the shoes in the mall the girls bought from two different stores and ended

up getting similar color shoes. What other places can you find Bargains, Discounts and Coupons? Target had some major sales going on for back to school and that is where Caitlyn found her backpack and lunch box. Publix had many items BOGO free items for school supplies. You can find coupons for back to school sales as you enter the store. JCPenney's also had several sales on clothes and accessories. If you want to find more coupons you can check out Google for your location, add back to school coupons, and a list will be brought up with sales. Best of luck!

Recipe Corner Back-to-School is just around the corner! It’s time to get organized for those early mornings and after school activities. Tips to avoid early morning chaos: Each night before school make lunches, have children get their clothes out, and put backpacks by the door packed and ready to go. Kids’ nutritional needs are all over the news these days, but many don’t know how much of each food their children should be eating. New USDA guidelines show a simple plate with the suggested amount of fruits, veggies, grains, protein and dairy people should have. About.com Pediatrics says: How many fruits and vegetables should my kids eat each day? The food guide pyramids are a good guide to what your children should be eating each day. The Food Guide Pyramid for Young Children, which can be

Servings from the Fruit Group include: 1 medium apple, banana, orange, 1/2 cup of chopped, cooked, or canned fruit, 3/4 cup of fruit juice. If your child eats a larger serving, such as 2 apples or 1 cup of chopped, cooked, or canned fruits, then count it as two servings.
Remember that these are just general guidelines and your children don't need to eat the exact number of recommended servings each day. Instead, his or her diet, over a period of a week or two, should average out to the recommended servings. So some days they may eat more and some days less than the recommended number of fruit and vegetable servings.

used for kids between 2 and 6 years, recommends that they get 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit each day. Older children, over age 6 years, can use the regular Food Guide Pyramid (pictured below), which shows that they should have 3-5 servings of foods from the Vegetable Group, and 2-4 servings from the Fruit Group. Servings from the Vegetable Group include: 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables , 1/2 cup of other vegetables, cooked or chopped raw, 3/4 cup of vegetable juice

pps for School! While getting ready for school I found some useful apps that will help keep us organized.

I found "My School Agenda," that helps you to remember your assignments. You can add your contacts and your courses and then make a new assignment with all the related information. This is a FREE app. I also use "letterTrace," to help Elizabeth learn how to writer her letters and learn her numbers. This year she will be practicing and beginning to read books and we need all the support we can get. "Study Flash" is a great app for studying for exams. This will be very helpful this year! FREE. August Quotes -

In summer, the song sings itself. William Carlos Williams In August, the large masses of berries, which, when in flower, had attracted many wild bees, gradually assumed their bright velvety crimson hue, and by their weight again bent down and broke their tender limbs. Henry David Thoreau

School Tips

Heartbeat Connection Magazine

Finding Inspirational Heartfelt companies to connect with others. Have you made a QR code yet for your business? They are so much fun to scan and visit the websites quickly. Ask me how!

to ease back into a routine & stay organized. 1. Make a list of nighttime and morning routines If you make a list together as a family of what to do before you go to bed at night. Some of the things could be: shower or bath, brush teeth, pjs, read a book, talk about the day, or prayer. The to do list for the morning could be: brush teeth, take shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, get backpack and tennis shoes, and smile! 2. Pick a special spot to stay organized Find a location in your room or at the front door to keep your child's backpack and tennis shoes. This way each day when they come home they put their things away in the same location. When they wake up they will be easy to find. 3. BedtimeOver the summertime many families let their kids stay up late. To ease back to school bedtime try to schedule one hour earlier for bedtime each night. Once the kids get used to that hour, the next time will be much easier. With getting up earlier, they will be more tired and ready for bed too. 4. Alarm Clock Some kids don't wake up no matter what sound is made. It might help if you get them their own special alarm clock. They can set the time each night, younger ones will learn about numbers and older ones will learn about schedules. 5. Go through the kids clothes' With the old clothes out of the way those that fit can be hung up, ready to wear for the week.

11 HEARTBEAT CONNECTION AUGUST 2011

www.heartbeatconnection.com 6. Make a file for School handouts If you create this folder before school starts it will be ready for all those papers that come home with the kids. You can also use a box that you've recycled. 7. School supplies If you go online you can get the list of school supplies from the schools. Once you buy all the school supplies, set up a stack for extra supplies in the closet. 8. Label everything A label maker is handy for backpacks, jackets, lunch bags and school supplies. If you don't have one, a black marker is the good way to designate who is the owner. 9. Choose your clothes the night before When the kids choose their clothes the night before, it cuts down the time they take to get ready in the morning. It will also allow you to be sure you have all the needed items. 10. Use a Calendar Don't forget those important dates. Now with smartphones the calendar feature is a lifesaver. Set up the calendar with all your kids events. You can also keep a calendar on the wall.
