fun time of year is Spring time, when the flowers begin to bloom and the weather starts to warm up.
It's Happy St. Patrick's Day this month filled with lucky wishes and Bright Green colors. It brings a smile to my heart the pinching that can happen on St. Patty's Day if you don't wear green. May there be a beautiful rainbow this month and possibly someone may find a pot of gold at the end of it! Also, this month has been full of Birthdays, so those special ones will be celebrated. Dr. Suess & Albert Einstein are just a few of those special people that have given their hearts for knowledge. St. Patrick's Dinner is a family tradition of ours and we always enjoy the festivities and a delicious Irish meal. My mother-in-law is an expert at cooking the meal. The kids enjoy something different and learn a bit about the culture of the Irish.

A Heartbeat Connection Story about the love of my friend's dog, Blacker, and his memorial. Straight from the heart!
T
he Life we lived with our first
family dog...
One August day in 1997 we picked up this cute little black puppy. It was very exciting since we had just bought our first house and had no children yet. I thought we would play every day and this dog would love me forever! Well, he seemed to have a different idea of love and play in mind. He would run like crazy when I’d take him for a walk and occasionally even made me fall. Then he’d always seem to have accidents when I was the only one home to clean them up. Still, I loved this puppy and thought as soon as he gets bigger he’ll understand and become a lot nicer. So he grew and grew to a monstrous sized Black Lab and decided his favorite thing to do would be to hover over me as I was awaking in the morning and growl. This is when I realized that we had a special relationship … he was going to push the limits just like a child, and when he didn’t like something he was going to let me know. As long as we did it his way the world would revolve on a happy dog-like axis.

And we had lots of fun going on trips and boating and just loving our dog. Then one day we had a child of our own and the dog was no longer the only attention stealer. We were worried that he might not like the idea, but love took over and he would sit in front of the baby and keep watch over her. Anyone that wanted to see that baby had to first be approved of by the dog. The dog would play with the baby who grew to be a little girl and become a big sister and the Black Lab loved them both. But after 15 wonderful years as the first child, the dog’s bones got weak and his body got old. On Friday February 4th, 2011 we made one of the hardest decisions our hearts have ever had to make. Blacker had to be put to sleep. With his “human family” by his side, we watched him take his last breath and cried, not for him, but for us. What that dog had given us was true love and we were going to miss it! Rest in peace old buddy! Love, Beth Gatrell & Family

HEARTBEAT BIRTHDAYS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein Albert Einstein March 14, 1879 – April 18, 1955. Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who discovered the theory of general relativity, effecting a revolution in physics. For this achievement, Einstein is often regarded as the father of modern physics. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect." Near the beginning of his career, Einstein thought that Newtonian mechanics was no longer enough to reconcile the laws of classical mechanics with the laws of the electromagnetic field. This led to the development of his special theory of relativity. He realized, however, that the principle of relativity could also be extended to gravitational fields, and with his subsequent theory of gravitation in 1916, he published a paper on the general theory of relativity. He continued to deal with problems of statistical mechanics and quantum theory, which led to his explanations of particle theory and the motion of molecules. He also investigated the thermal properties of light which laid the foundation of the photon theory of light. In 1917, Einstein applied the general theory of relativity to model the structure of the universe as a whole. He escaped from Nazi Germany in 1933, where he had been a professor at the Berlin Academy of Sciences, and settled in the U.S., becoming a citizen in 1940. On the eve of World War II, he helped alert President Franklin D. Roosevelt that Germany might be developing an atomic weapon, and recommended that the U.S. begin similar research. Later, together with Bertrand Russell, Einstein signed the Russell–Einstein Manifesto, which highlighted the danger of nuclear weapons. Einstein taught physics at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey, until his death in 1955. Einstein published more than 300 scientific papers along with over 150 non-scientific works, and received honorary doctorate degrees in science, medicine and philosophy from many European and American universities;[4] he also wrote about various philosophical and political subjects such as socialism, international relations and the existence of God. His great intelligence and originality have made the word "Einstein" synonymous with genius.

Born March 5th, 2000, Nathan is a true gift to our family. He is smart, kind, and willing to teach others how to do so many things. If either Grandpa has a question about something, Nathan is eager to research it for them on the internet and figure out a solution. Being the oldest of three comes with its challenges and fun. He gets to enjoy many new experiences before his brother and sister, and also to set an example for them. He is inquisitive and loving and we love that about him. This year we celebrated his birthday with a few of his friends and family at our home. He got some money to go have some fun with and a DSi XL to play the newest games. One week later and he has completed a game and is now learning how to upgrade the games. We are so proud of our boy, and from our Heart, give him all our love! We hope all his dreams come true.

St. Patrick's Dinner
S
Cheryl Flothe shares her thoughts on St. Patrick's Day and special recipes! T. PATRICK’S DAY ORIGINS AND RECIPES
St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th! According to St. Pattys.com, the patron saint of Ireland came from humble pagan beginnings. Born in Wales in 385 AD, the boy who became St. Patrick was taken and sold as a slave by Irish invaders to his village. He escaped after six years of slavery and traveled to Gaul, studying at a monastery there for twelve years. He came to believe his mission in life was to convert the pagans of Ireland to Christianity. The Celtic Druids of the time were not happy with St. Patrick’s mission to convert their people, so he was imprisoned and escaped several times. Over thirty years, he established many monasteries, schools, and churches, succeeding in his goal of bringing Christianity to Ireland. St. Patrick died on March 17, 461 AD and has been remembered on that day ever since. Today St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many countries throughout the world. To some it is seen as a religious holiday, others enjoy St. Patrick’s Day as a fun secular custom. Many people celebrate with church services, parades, wearingof-the-green (the green symbolizes the Shamrock St. Patrick equated with the Holy Trinity), parties, and preparing, and eating traditional Irish foods. Although many prepare corned beef and cabbage as their traditional Irish food, I have chosen two different dishes that are also very popular in Ireland. - Cheryl Flothe

Gilli Davies, in Celtic Cuisine says, “Colcannon is a favorite Irish recipe and a particular St. Patrick's Day favorite. It is quick, easy and simple to make. Colcannon was traditionally used for predicting marriage on Halloween. Charms were hidden in the Colcannon and any unmarried girl who found one would place socks with spoonfuls of Colcannon and the charms on their front door handle. The first man to enter the house was their intended.” Marc Boyer, who submitted this recipe to allrecipes.com, said it was from County Mayo, Ireland. Ingredients: 1 pound cabbage 1 pound potatoes 2 leeks 1 cup milk Salt and pepper to taste 1 pinch ground mace 1/2 cup butter Directions: In a large saucepan, boil cabbage or Kale until tender; remove and chop or blend well. Set aside and keep warm. Boil potatoes until tender. Remove from heat and drain. Chop leeks, green parts as well as white, and simmer them in just enough milk to cover, until they are soft. Season and mash potatoes well. Stir in cooked leeks and milk. Blend in the kale or cabbage and heat until the whole is a pale green fluff. Make a well in the center and pour in the melted butter. Mix well. Note: This dish may be used as a side, or mounded on a plate or in a bowl with a scoop of Irish Stew ladled into a well in the center of the potatoes. Also, scallions or green onions may be substituted for leeks.
Irish Stew Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes 1 pound carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks 6 large potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 white onion, cut into large chunks 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups beef broth 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle Irish stout beer (e.g. Guinness®) 1 tablespoon cold water 1 tablespoon cornstarch Directions: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Toss beef cubes with flour to coat, then fry in the hot oil until browned. Place the carrots, potatoes, onion and garlic in a large slow cooker. Place the meat on top of the vegetables. Mix together the beef broth and tomato paste and pour into the slow cooker along with the beer. Cover and cook on high for 6 hours or low for 8 hours. During the last hour before serving, dissolve the cornstarch in cold water and then stir into the broth. Simmer on the high setting for a few minutes to thicken. Note: Lamb can be substituted for beef chuck.

Top Apps - What makes an app useful?
Since I use my cellphone each and every day I enjoy researching the latest new apps and finding ones that I feel are useful. Here is a review of the top apps that I use routinely and would recommend to others.
I love the photography apps, so I have many on my phone to edit photos I've taken and share them with family and friends. I have PhotoFunia, iPicEd, FlashforFree, and ColorBooth to name a few.
I also find the social media apps like Facebook and Twitter are useful. Keeping up to date on family news and events is an important part of my time. While I was exercising today I found a great Music app called MuseBox where I could listen to the latest songs and enjoy working out. Netflix is a great app, as my kids can watch movies or I can put on my headphones and watch a romance. Bump is cool if you like to share pictures and information with others that have iphones. I've shared pictures and contact info with ease by bumping our phones together.
