DO IT ANYWAY People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God, It was never between you and them anyway. THE POET: MOTHER TERESA

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway.

Letter from the Editor

Do you trick-or-treat? My kids love to dress up for Halloween and we take them to some homes in our community for the festivities. We'll also be attending a local Harvest Festival and hopefully stop at some pumpkin patches for a few fun photos. This month I've started using a program called Family iBoard. It's a private community where you can journal about your family history, share secret family recipes, and so much more. I'll be sharing my review on our blog as I learn more about all the features. We've been given a designer vase from The Clay Place as this month's giveaway. The vase was given to us to help raise awareness in the fight against cancer. Please make sure to visit the Giveaway section on our website for more details.

With love, Nicole Flothe

I follow a photographer on Facebook, Missy K Photography, and love seeing her photo albums; she has a magical quality to her photos. While I was browsing, I found an album with Fairy photos and fell in love with our cover girl, Caroline. Read more in a Fairy Princess, 3 Ways to be a Princess.

HEARTBEAT CONNECTION OCTOBER 2012

Got Boots? Of KORS!! (1) I adore Michael Kors! He knows what a woman wants & how to make us look our best. These boots....ohh these boots!! Supple leather, stacked heel, platform toe, all coming together to create one knockout boot!! These are the Lesly Knee Boot, and for $325 they have the look and feel of boots that are up to 3x the price! And they are so comfortable, even though the heel is 4-1/2 inches high. You're guaranteed to walk tall in these babies! (2) DSW....OMG!! I always forget about this little treasure house of shoes and accessories. I've been looking for my "perfect" interpretation of the classic riding boot for a couple of months now. I need look no more. Bingo! These are Bandolino and were $99 at DSW, but retail for $149.99 elsewhere. These hit right below my knee, which is perfect for those of us who were not graced with height! Mid-calf works better on taller people. The leather is so shiny & they are fitted to give that equestrian look! These top the high bar for sure!!! Now to Accessorize! I love Premier Jewelry! Premier Jewelry is costume jewelry kicked up a few notches. It's high quality and follows the current trends in the accessories world. (3) I love my Runway necklace. It's so beautiful and instantly updates any outfit. It is $42 and will be a staple for a long time to come. (4) This bracelet is called All That Jazz, runs $42 and is so cool! I love the tri-tone because it can be worn with gold, silver, or pewter earrings and jewelry. Totally Fab! Find your Premier Jewelry consultant and order great gifts for yourself and your friends and loved ones for the Holidays!! Consultant for Premier Jewelry, Shari Longo can be reached on her cell at 239-398-8712 or home, 239775-2889. Premier Jewelry is founded on biblical principals. OUT & ABOUT ALASKA by Nicole Flothe Dress up clothes. Go online or visit a boutique in town to find your perfect princess dress. You'll start to feel like a princess. Learn about our modern-day princesses and what causes they support. Put a Crown on, watch a few movies, and act out some scenes.

Cover Story Interview with Missy K Photography: What was the reason you did a Fairy Princess theme? Imagination is such an important part, and we lose that as we grow old. This shoot captures our dreams as a little girl. My hope is these little girls remember how special they felt the day they became a fairy. When you captured this photo, did you have her run towards you or was that unplanned? I had all the girls run towards me, Caroline caught a breeze which made this shot extra special. That and her stunning beauty! Where did you get the clothing for the shoot? The clothing is designed by Jane and sold in melissajaneboutique online. Her designs are amazing. During your photo shoots, are there any particular words you use to have them strike a pose? I try to steer away from posing. I ask them about their school, something funny about their parents. Do you search out your locations ahead of time or are there special locations you use most often? A little bit of both. I search for light more than location. www.MissyKPhotography.com and www.facebook.com/naplesfamilyphotographer

Tips to Keep Kids Healthy by Nicole Flothe My good friend, Jennifer Tutino, recommended I speak with Jennifer Lange at Little People's School to get some great tips on keeping our kids healthy. She was so sweet to answer a few of my questions. What are some tips you give parents on how they can keep their kids healthy when joining a new school environment? *We actually hand out a pamphlet, “The Flu,” A Guide for Parents that is produced by DCF and is available on their website. Our parents are required to read the pamphlet and sign the verification slip. It discusses everything from flu symptoms to how to prevent the flu, including information about the flu vaccine. www.myflorida.com/childcare The most important thing I find that helps here at LPS is hand washing---lots and lots of hand washing. When children first come to school, we spend quite a bit of time talking about proper bathroom techniques and we do a very hands on lesson with the kids in the restrooms to show them how to wash AND dry in a sanitary way. Our rules are: 1. Turn the water on. 2. Get one pump of soap and lather. We teach the kids a cute song that tells them how to wash and also teaches them the proper amount of time they should be washing. Sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” – Wash, Wash, Wash your hands. Wash them ‘til they’re clean. Tops and bottoms, all around and even in between. (Sing twice!) 3. Rinse hands thoroughly while rubbing tops, bottoms and in betweens. 4. Dry with paper towel. 5. Use paper towel to turn off water. Do you find that when kids are brand new to preschool they tend to get more colds at first? Yes, it does seem that children who are experiencing being in a group situation for the first time end up with just about everything that comes down the pike. I call September the month of the creeping crud. I always say, better now than when they are in Kindergarten! The body does build immunities as exposures happen and the children experience less illness as they grow older. Some children get a double dose of exposure by either older siblings that are already in school or by older children that attend after school programs at their child care center. Little People’s School does not take older after schoolers or drop ins. Hence the children here are not over exposed at such a young age.

HEARTBEAT CONNECTION OCTOBER 2012

We do everything we know to do to keep our preschool environment as germ free as possible. Aside from the daily and weekly cleaning duties, some of our favorite products are the Lysol wipes and Anywhere Spray. Both products clean and sanitize, killing flu germs. We also have a very strict illness policy in place that requires all children who have had fever, diarrhea, vomiting or unexplained rashes to stay out of school until all symptoms have cleared. Also if children have a persistent or deep cough or copious amounts of nasal mucous they will need to stay out of school until symptoms clear. You never know what underlying health issues may be exacerbated by someone else’s viral or bacterial infection. We also want to keep kids healthy so that parents spend less time away from work – in this economy, that is really important. What is the most common way kids pass germs to each other and how do you help prevent this from happening? The most common way kids pass germs on to each other here is by not covering their mouths and nose when coughing or sneezing. Teaching children about germs is difficult, because you can’t see germs. A fun way to “show” the kids what happens when they cough or sneeze is to use a spray bottle (you can use colored water for effect!) with its setting on the mist opening. Pretend to sneeze and spray a Kleenex or table top to show the water residue. We then explain that in each of those tiny water droplets live germs that make us sick. To prevent those water droplets from going all over, you must cover your mouth and nose with your hands so the germs can be caught and washed down the drain! We teach this important sanitary technique by reciting a quick poem:

"When you have to cough or sneeze, cover mouth and nose please." After a child coughs or sneezes, we remind them not to touch anything, then have them go directly to the restroom to wash. After a few weeks, the kids just automatically get up for a tissue and then to wash. Many children are taught to cough in the crook of their arm so that germs don’t go on their hands. In our school setting I do not teach this technique because the germs, mucous, etc., are then the whole way up the child’s arm/shirt sleeve, making it very difficult to wash.

What do you love about your Little People's School? What I love about Little People’s School are the terrific families that find us each year. I am one of the lucky people who go to work looking forward to the day ahead. The clients that find our school choose our school because of the excellent program that we offer. LPS is consistently one of the highest ranked VPK programs in Collier County, which, in effect, means we do a super job getting the children ready for Kindergarten!! We are a small, private preschool that really focuses on the developmental needs of our children, which is why we employ certified elementary teachers and early childhood educators to head up our classrooms. We keep our families informed with weekly newsletters and, at times, daily emails. Informed, educated parents are more likely to participate in the weekly educational (and fun) projects like show and tell Fridays, Letter Board “home work,” student of the week back pack, and Fun Friday T-shirt day! How do you help the community and encourage the kids to stay healthy? We have built into our curriculum lessons on exercise, proper rest and healthy eating which I think is a HUGE part of keeping kids healthy. One of the fun things we do here to encourage healthy eating habits is the “Fruit and Veggie Challenge!” Each time a child eats a fruit or veggie they get their name put into a drawing. At the end of the week we pull several names to win a prize from the treasure chest. The more veggies and fruits the kids eat, the more chances they have to win! We try to make sure that all of the children end up getting a trip to the treasure box at some point. We also place a Forgetful Freddy note in lunch boxes of children who were not provided a fruit or veggie to encourage parents to remember this very important part of the lunch. We started this many years ago when we realized that some children NEVER had a fruit or veggie in their lunch. Parents wouldn’t pack a fruit or veggie because they thought their child wouldn’t eat it – so why waste? At LPS we encourage the kids to eat the main part of their lunch first and then the yogurts/cheeses and fruits. They are not permitted to move on to the sweets and treats until the “healthy, growing food” is down the hatch. It’s amazing what kids will eat to get to those fruit snacks! The Fruit and Veggie Challenge could easily be translated to the home setting! What a fun way to encourage your own children to eat up their greens! ou Asked & We Answered. by Shelly Aristizabal of Healthy Living Concierge

Measuring Your Exercise Intensity Q: What is your RPE - Rated Perceived Exertion Scale?

A: The RPE scale is used to measure the intensity of your exercise. The RPE scale runs from 0 – 10. The numbers below relate to phrases used to rate how easy or difficult you find an activity. For example, 0 (nothing at all) would be how you feel when sitting in a chair; 10 (very, very heavy) is how you feel at the end of an exercise stress test or after a very difficult activity. In most cases, you should exercise at a level that feels 3 (moderate) to 4 (somewhat heavy). When using this rating scale, remember to include feelings of shortness of breath, as well as how tired you feel in your legs and overall.

Heart Photography by Nicole Flothe

The fun thing about Facebook is the new friends I've made. I was reading my timeline and Brooklyn McDermott Photography's image caught my eye. I asked her if she would like to share her heart photos in the magazine and answer a few photography questions for me. What inspired you to take your heart photographs?

My inspiration comes from lots of different places. My subject, the atmosphere, the lighting, the mood, and even Pinterest! How did you set up your shots to capture the theme?

I usually play it by ear with each family. I can't say there is a lot of "setting up," per se. I just follow my instincts, do things spontaneously, and go with the present mood. How long have you been a photographer and why do you love it?

I have been a photographer at heart for most of my life, however, professionally for only about a year. What is your favorite "Heart" photo you have ever taken?

My favorite "heart" photo would have to be the shot in the road. I love this because it was unplanned, very natural, and reflected the mood of the shoot. This particular shot was pretty spontaneous. We were on a windy, country road and the lighting was just perfect for the shadow picture. I, along with the family, kept maneuvering our positions until the heart was perfect. Do you take a certain amount of photos to get the perfect shot or do you spend more time editing them afterwards?

I take several shots of each setting. In editing, I usually take the most time on the first couple pictures to set the "mood" I'm going for, then follow suit for the rest of the session pictures. www.brooklynmcdermottphotography.com

Recipe Corner by Cheryl Flothe

HARVEST PUMPKIN DESSERT Since Halloween and Thanksgiving are coming up, I was looking for a new pumpkin recipe I’ve never tried. My husband’s aunt said she’d always carve her jack-o-lantern, use it for a few days, then cut it up and cook it. I prefer to use canned or buy a fresh pumpkin. Harvest Pumpkin Dessert Preparation: Turn oven to 350 and line a 13” x 9” pan with wax paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. 1. In medium bowl combine pumpkin, evaporated milk, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon. Stir to combine. Whisk in eggs and vanilla. Set aside. 2. Melt butter in a small bowl. Set aside. 3. Place chopped pecans on a baking sheet and toast in the 350 degree oven until fragrant. Set aside. 4. Pour pumpkin mixture into the prepared pan. Sprinkle cake mix on top of pumpkin mixture. Next, drizzle butter over cake mix layer. Sprinkle with chopped, toasted pecans. Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees until golden brown. Cool completely and refrigerate overnight. 5. In mixer combine cream cheese, confectioners sugar and vanilla extract. Combine until smooth. Fold in cool whip. Flip the cooled pumpkin dessert onto a serving platter. Frost with creamy topping and refrigerate until cold. Freeze 5 minutes before serving if desired. Cut into squares or slices & serve. Reference: Recipe found on Bing Pumpkin Desert Recipes. It was published November 17, 2008 in “Kevin & Mia’s Blog” online.

T

but when it gets dry and water systems recede, alligators dig out “gator holes” so they can avoid the dry heat.

he American Alligator by Cheryl Flothe

In all my years of living in and visiting Southwest Florida, one of the most interesting animals is the American Alligator. If there’s one dangerous animal we try to keep our distance from, it’s the alligator. We all know they are dangerous, but many don’t realize they are a necessary part of Southwest Florida’s water systems. Without the alligator, many other aquatic animals would disappear. During the rainy season alligators thrive and roam throughout the swamps and waterways,

Alligator in "gator hole." The abundance of these holes provides safe environments for many species: reptiles such as snakes and lizards; amphibians like frogs and salamanders; invertebrates such as snails and crayfish; birds; dragonflies; and more. Without places like gator holes for a watery shelter during the dry times, these dependent species would become extinct. So, when you see an alligator from now on, remember they are not only a dangerous predator--- they are a vital part of Florida’s aquatic ecosystem. Project Outreach has been working hard this month to support local fundraisers in the Naples area. One of the events they helped with was, The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, it's as unique and special as the stories that motivate the dedicated walkers, donors, and volunteers. Each step they take is personal, and each donation is helping to save lives. Each volunteer helps create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays.
