usy Summers are always full of fun and adventure. This summer has been no exception. We went on a family road trip up to Montreal to see our relatives. It took three days from Florida as we stopped in Helen, Georgia, tubed down the river, then spent the night in Virginia. Towards the last part of the drive to Canada, the kids were so excited to see their cousins they kept asking the ultimate traveling kids question, "Are we there yet?" We love our family and enjoy every moment we are with them. We visited my Aunt's store, Alena Kirby, and explored Husdon Village. We visited downtown Old Montreal and went to the Science Museum. We even had time enough to stop at a Cupcake Shop and enjoy some tasty treats. After we left Montreal and said our goodbyes to Aunt Alena, Uncle Stanley, Aunt Maggie, Tara, Dave, Emily, Pat, Stefanie, Dominic, Chris and the rest of the family; we headed for Chicago. I hadn't been to Chicago since I was 11 years old and was there on a short vacation. We stayed at The Congress hotel and before we checked in we toured The Field Museum. Our Hotel was across from a beautiful park and Lake Michigan. The view was, inspiring, and so we went for a walk around the area. Then we took a cab to Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower).

3 HEARTBEAT CONNECTION JULY 2011

My favorite memory was the kids craning their necks to see the building way up in the sky. We bought our tickets and went up the 103 flights in the elevator. Once we got to the top we could see all of Chicago and the amazing architecture. Each window had information about what you were viewing. They also added the extreme experience where you can step into a clear glass window and it feels and looks like your floating beside the building. My kids loved that part and I was brave and stepped out into the box. We then ended the night by enjoying a Chicago deep dish pizza and ice cream. So much fun for me and so many great memories for my family. Some of our family went on to Alaska for the rest of the summer to spend time hiking and fishing. During their adventures they've seen bears, moose, eagles, and beautiful mountains. Summer is half-way over, but each moment is what counts. So I encourage you to go out and discover it!

My cousin, Gail Hedrick, shares some amazing stories that teach life lessons to children. Straight from the heart!

G

ail Hedrick Author

Born and raised in Lansing and Gun Lake, Michigan, Gail and her younger brother, Dean, developed a love of books through trips to the public library. Their parents combined an active life ice skating, biking, sledding, water skiing or sailing with reading. This developed Gail’s lifelong passion for sports and curiosity about the world that was an incubator for writing. It just hadn’t hatched anything yet! Gail studied health and physical education at Michigan State University. After her sophomore year, she took a summer job lifeguarding and teaching swimming at Sunnybrook Farm in South Haven, Michigan and her life changed forever. Gail met Mont Hedrick, from Lexington, North Carolina and that Southern boy swept her off her feet. They married and Gail transferred to the University of Houston, graduating with a degree in health and physical education and minor in speech and theatre. Visit www.gailhedrick.com

4HEARTBEAT CONNECTION JULY 2011

She taught physical education, was a YMCA administrator, coached swimming and gymnastics and developed a preschool movement education program. Next, Gail got the best job on earth, mom to Ben and Josh, and read to them every chance she could. This sparked the desire to learn about writing and she enrolled in courses from the Institute for Children’s Literature. She just intended to learn to write, but when the teacher encouraged submitting her first completed lesson to a magazine and it sold, Gail was hooked! So, what does she write about? It varies, but Gail writes about everyday things that kids deal with like setting the table, studying, following directions, facing fears or being a friend. She writes a lot about movement as in not sitting still. Bounce a ball, go for a run, play with a hula hoop or roll in the grass – she’s not too picky, but really believes everyone needs to wiggle around everyday. Gail continues to write, publish, and take writing classes. She and Mont live in Florida. To see how the boys turned out, check the photo section. Gail collects seashells and loves to travel; bringing back a shell or rock from every place she visits. She likes to walk, swim, exercise, kayak, and yes, read!

lizabeth's Visit to Alena Kirby's store.

We traveled many days to finally arrive in Hudson, Canada. Once there, I asked my five year old daughter if she'd like to go to my Aunt's store. She thought that would be fun and so here are a few questions I asked her while browsing around. Enjoy the pictures too.

If I give you some money what would you buy? Candy My Aunt also brought them a cute little keepsake stone. The package had her signature ribbons on them and so she put them in the girls hair. The cousins are So Cute!

What do you think of the store? Beautiful Who would shop here? My mom, my grandma, I would. Look around and tell me something you like and why? I like the key chains with the letters on them, I also like the candy.

L

earning a new trade, and why?

My cousin Emily Doherty has recently started learning woodcrafting and made me a lovely Heart. So I sent her a request on Facebook to answer a few of my questions. Why did you get involved? Hey Nicole, I'd be happy to answer those questions for you, and I can't wait to read the article! Tara was actually the one that encouraged me to go after it. It's something that I had always been interested in doing, but when I was younger didn't really think that I could. I've always just loved the idea of making things myself, whether it be baking, knitting, and of course I always thought it would be so cool to build furniture. And as a kid I always loved playing with dads tools in his workshop. Then last year the owners of the restaurant where I was working decided to sell as they were getting older and wanted to start slowing down. That ended up being the greatest thing to happen to me because it gave that reason and opportunity to seek out a new path in life. Where do you see your dream place to work? Ultimately my dream place to work would be my own shop creating one of a kind pieces of furniture. Seeing as I have to start somewhere though, I think it would be neat to work in the film industry building film sets. Or another big industry for cabinetmakers in our neck of the woods is doing the interior of private jets. Really though, I'd be pretty happy starting anywhere.

7HEARTBEAT CONNECTION JULY 2011

What will you be doing for the rest of the classes? We still have to learn about refinishing and repairing old furniture and how to properly finish a new piece of furniture. I think we're also going to spend more time on veneering and using plastic laminates. Our final project should be the most fun, we get to build whatever we want, we do the whole thing from A-Z, including drafting up the plans and we get to keep it because we pay for the materials. That's going to be fun because when we finish we put on a vernissage "art exhibit" for our friends and family. After that we have what we call a stage, which I guess you guys probably call a co-op or job placement for 6 weeks and we graduate! Ooh boy! That was a mouthful or keyboard full! What is the name of your school and what is your favorite thing you've made so far? Oh, the school I go to is Rosemount Technology Center. My favorite thing I've made so far is the bowl I made mom. It gave me a chance to be creative, and the lathe is by far my favorite machine to use. So satisfying!

Cheryl Flothe's

Corner This month is special to all Americans---we celebrate the date our country officially approved The Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. July 2nd, 1776 was the date the 2nd Continental Congress passed the motion of legal separation between the 13 Colonies from Great Britain. On July 2nd, 1776 John Adams wrote these words to his wife, Abigail: The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. And so, every year for the last 235 years we have held true to John Adam’s vision of how we should celebrate Independence Day in our wonderful country, The United States of America! We have even thrown in picnics, barbeques, political speeches, concerts and more. It is also a legal holiday so many people have a day off. I recently discovered this delicious and simple cheesecake recipe on Food.com. It is a wonderful addition to any dinner or event. To make it red white and blue, just add raspberries and blueberries on top!

PHOTO courtesy of Candy TX Basic Philly Cheesecake By Lennie, 11/25/01 Prep Time: 20 mins. Total Time: 1-1/4 hr. Servings: 10 Ingredients Crust: - 1 c. graham cracker crumbs - 3 T. sugar - 3 T. margarine, melted Filling: - 3 (8 oz.) pkgs. Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened - ¾ c. white sugar - 3 large eggs - 1 t. vanilla pie filling, sundae sauce, or whipped cream for topping (optional) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 2. Combine crumbs, sugar, and melted margarine; press into bottom of 9” spring form pan. 3. Bake for 10 minutes, remove from oven and raise oven temperature to 450F degrees. 4. To make filling, combine softened cream cheese and sugar in large bowl with an electric mixer, beating at medium speed until well mixed. 5. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition; blend in vanilla then pour into crust. 6. Bake for 10 min. at 450F, then reduce heat to 250F for 25-30 minutes more, or until set. 7. Loosen cake from rim of pan; cool before removing from pan. 8. Chill, top individual slices with preferred topping, if any, just before serving. Note: Although the recipe called for Philadelphia Cream Cheese, I used another brand. Also, it didn’t seem quite set after 25-30 minutes, so I just turned the oven off and checked on it an hour later. It was delicious and just the perfect consistency. Enjoy!

It's fun to know where your friends are getting together at a moment's notice when you log in to your app on your phones. Sometimes I see my friends are at the movies because they got a free popcorn and yahoo checks them in. Foursquare merchants offer discounts when you are at the locations and check in. I've heard you can become Mayor to some of the shops too. So if you go to Chili's and they have a checkin to save 10% maybe you and your friends can enjoy the discount and a nice meal together. Beth Gatrell, provides some tips for, "Into Tomorrow" on the new technology that is available to keep families connected this summer. Here is her tech tip on connecting with others this summer...

pps for Researching! I just recently downloaded some great Researching apps to enjoy and learn some things about cooking, crafts, photography ideas, or quotes.

I found "Pinterest," it's like a virtual pinboard - a place to catalog and share the things you love. Pin anything that catches your eye: memorable meals, places to visit, or great shopping finds. This is a FREE app. I also use "Foursquare," which helps you explore the world around you. Keep up with friends, get insider tips, and unlock discounts and rewards. FREE "StumbleUpon" is a fun app that is a discovery engine that finds the best of everything on the web, recommended just for you. With a touch of the Stumble button, you'll discover photos, videos, and webpages recommended by friends and people sharing your interests. to love your space. 1. Pick a theme When you first pick a theme you will be better able to decide what is going into your space. For instance, whether it centers around shells, hearts, outdoors, or pink or whatever; once you make this decision, items will fall into place more easily. 2. Not too much, just right Start off by cleaning the area completely of your items. Then once this is done, evaluate your space and only add back the items that are necessary. If you're working on your desk, add the pencil jar or some lighting. Keep the rest of the desk clear for your activities that you do for the day. If it's your dining table, remove everything and then only add back a few items like the, table cloth, napkin holder, flowers, and a pretty vase. 3. Use hanging shelvingIn the closet to provide additional storage. This works for shoes, clothes, and even books, magazines, and other miscellaneous items that you may have lying around the room. It keeps them out of sight and wellorganized. 4. Hang a shoe rack or use a big basket If you have a ton of shoes or a family with several pairs, a nice hanging shoe rack might do the trick. We use a large basket towards the front of our house and when everyone takes their shoes off they place them in the basket. Makes it look more organized. 5. Use a camera to find the worst clutter spots Go around your house and take a few pictures. Then review them to evaluate where clutter hides.

11 HEARTBEAT CONNECTION JULY 2011

www.heartbeatconnection.com 6. Refresh your workspace or house Towards the end of the day after you've worked so hard to organize, go around the house and refresh your space. Grab a basket and put the things that are misplaced into it then back to where they belong. 7. Organize your drawers in a Hierarchy of Importance On the top put the items that you use most often, and use the bottom drawers for the things you want to keep on hand. 8. Make your own Storage system If you have a lot of shoe boxes or jars combine them together and use them in a drawer. I saw this one cute drawer, they had tea cups in and all their jewelry was in each individual container. The earrings hung from the sides of the tea cups. 9. Tag your electrical cords If you have several items plugged into an area and want to know what is what get some tape that you can write on and tag the cords. 10. When in doubt - Toss it Out! If you're in doubt about keeping something, give it away, sell it or toss it out if it has no value. Have fun Organizing!!!
