Awards by Miss Evridge.

If you don't get an award when you really know you should. Don't be disappointed, God knows when you are "good." It isn't always the best man who is honored to hear below, Because people give the awards, and there's so much they don't know. So when you fail or think that you have had tremendous loss, remember, our Savior was perfect and his reward was a cross. And remember, my friend, as you travel through life with all its strife and sin, That as long as you please Christ, you're the fellow who will win.

Letter from the Editor

It seems each month ends so quickly and I have the great opportunity to reflect on the things that happened by composing this letter. My kids are almost out of school and we are excited about summer. No more alarm clocks, unless of course they enroll in a few camps. Liz is going to do a drama camp and Jake & Nathan will be doing a few basketball camps. I remember when I was little I went to Solid Rock Bible Camp and rode horses, such a fun summer! Post on our Facebook page what kind of summer things you will be doing, #summertime. We've been praying for my sister-in-law, Laurie, for a speedy recover from kidney problems. We are so thankful the doctors were able to help her and she is on her way to feeling better. My parents went to Alaska and over to Silver Salmon Creek. If you haven't read my dad's newest issue of Alaska Munger Valley Pioneers be sure to visit www.gde91.com. You can request a free copy. Hello, how are you? I’m all right, and, as I get ready to go to kindergarten, I think I really want to be in summer. While I’m waiting for summer, I choose a “yellow and pink” look, because, as you know, yellow is a MUST and, together with pink, it is fabulous.

This tee is a bit yellow and a bit pink with a pretty bird and the trousers are all pink. My mom dresses me like this even to go to kindergarten. If I get dirty, then, there is the washing machine …;-) This t-shirt from Zara Kids is really cute and fun and combined with my super romantic hairband, it makes the outfit modern, but romantic. Mom, what do we do after kindergarten? Really???? I’ll tell you next time ..;-) HAVE A SPECIAL DAY

I grew up in Alaska, but never developed a taste for salmon until I got married and our family started fishing for it ourselves. We always had so much in the freezer, I found many ways to prepare it that our family likes--salmon patties are a favorite. This interesting recipe for salmon patties was on the Alaska Seafood website. Since I love dill, hope you will, too! Alaska Salmon Cakes with Yogurt Dill Sauce Ingredients 1 15 oz. can salmon or 2 cups, flaked 1 egg 1/4 cup small-curd cottage cheese 1T. chopped fresh dill, or 1t. dried dill 1 t. lemon pepper seasoning 1/4 c. sliced green onions 3 T. garlic-and-herb bread crumbs Vegetable oil Yogurt dill sauce (recipe follows) Directions Drain salmon and discard bones (if any). In a medium bowl, whisk egg lightly. Add cottage cheese, dill, lemon pepper, and green onions. Mix well. Mix in drained salmon, then sprinkle in bread crumbs, and mix well. Shape mixture into 4 patties, 1/2-3/4 inches in diameter. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and brush skillet with oil. Fry the salmon cakes for about 2-1/2 to 3 minutes per side. Cakes should be crisp and golden on the outside and still moist on the inside. Serve with yogurt dill sauce. Tips for a crunchy coating: Lightly dust salmon cakes with fine cornmeal before frying. Yogurt Dill Sauce 1/2 cup nonfat yogurt 1-1/2 t. finely minced fresh garlic Salt and pepper 1 T. chopped fresh dill or 1 t. dried dill weed 1/4 c. grated and squeezed dry cucumber Mix yogurt and garlic, and add salt and pepper to taste. Stir in dill and cucumber. Refrigerate covered until ready to serve.

Q: How do I get an abundance of Joy & Happiness in My Life? Do you have an abundance of joy & happiness in your life? "There are those who give with joy, and joy is their reward." - Khalil Gibran Laughter is the best medicine. We must consciously nurture and release joy in our lives. Every day we are given is a gift. We should enjoy it fully and not waste it. Joy is powerful. Find strength in the good around you. When you become a blessing to others and give of yourself, you will naturally feel joyful. When we receive something, we only get the gift; but when we give, we receive the joy of giving. Nothing releases supernatural joy in our lives more than being a blessing to other people.

Selfishness and self-centeredness turn our focus in on ourselves and block our joy, but giving does just the opposite. People are happy when they are reaching out to others. Be a blessing, be happy, and rejoice on purpose, and you will enjoy a life in abundance. Learn to enjoy where you are on the way to where you're going. You will enjoy the journey when you seek joy and the freedom to laugh and enjoy life, love people, and be unafraid to step out and try new things. Action: If you're not happy with your life, now is a great time to look at the reasons why. Why are you unhappy? Are you lonely? Disappointed? Scared? Feel rejected? Unworthy? Angry? Harboring regrets? Take a good long look at what you're really feeling. When you acknowledge it, you can work on it. HEART OF HOME AND FAMILY Why We Need Nature by Cheryl Flothe I've wondered if the trend of children (and people in general) spending less time in nature and more time indoors affects their health and well being. An interesting term, "Nature Deficit Disorder," popped up in my research. It's a concept developed by Richard Louv in his book, "Last Child in the Woods." Louv believes that when children spend less time indoors, behavioral problems and other negative effects can happen. Louv says his concept is not a psychological term, but observations he found in his studies that seemed to make sense. I was really interested in his ideas and thought the term fit nicely into my own beliefs that "nature deprivation" can't be good for people. In reading further, I found childhood obesity has at least doubled in the past 20 years, more ADHD cases have been diagnosed, and more depression is being seen in children. I've also read similar reports on adults, including the facts that stress-induced high blood pressure is up and diabetes is becoming almost epidemic. People are losing their connection to the natural world. Kids often spend less than 30 minutes in unorganized outdoor play (just plain fun) and 7 hours or more in front of a screen (TV, computer, video game, etc.). I would bet it's the same for adults. What can we do to lessen these threats to our mental and physical health? The world's become a more hectic, fast paced, complicated, and demanding place. Wouldn't it be great, though, if we could take some positive steps toward better health? The National Wildlife Federation has a few suggestions to improve our bodies, minds, and spirits:

Body k Playing or doing activities outdoors keeps us more fit, reduces obesity, makes us healthier, and can be just plain fun. k Being outside increases our Vitamin D levels, lessens diabetes risk, leads to stronger hearts and bones, and promotes better health. k Outdoor activities can increase our distance vision as our eyes constantly focus on near and far objects, lessening the possibility of nearsightedness. Mind k Spending time in nature can reduce ADHD symptoms. k Standardized test scores and critical thinking skills are higher for students at schools with Outdoor/Environment Based Education programs. Spirit k Stress levels decrease as we're outside in green areas. k Free time and play help children's emotional development, while no free time and a rushed way of living can increase anxiety and depression.

6

So, make time for the outdoors---for your family's health and well being. Take a walk in the woods, work in the yard, play ball or ride bikes with the family! Humans weren't made to stay indoors. Go outside, have fun, and make some memories. Lastly, you probably won't remember the movie you watched on the couch; but a hike or camping trip will be remembered forever!

The Weekend Warrior

by Jared Van Wagner D.C.

Well our summer is here and with summer comes work. In between torrential downpours we take on our weekend warrior work. This is the only time of year where I see people who normally sit at a desk for 8 to 10 hours a day shovel 15 yards of dirt on a Saturday. This work is fun; however, unless we are landscapers, our spines and muscles just aren’t prepared for this type of work. This doesn’t mean we can’t do work like this. It just means we must be prepared to work. Chances are the work you perform during the week is different from all of your weekend projects and hobbies. It is for this reason that your spine and muscles have become accustomed to that type of work. Your spine has also worked out a pattern according to the postures and positions you perform most. With chiropractic we aim to correct these small patterns that your spine has become accustomed to. The problem for the weekend warrior is that the postures and motion patterns you do during the week may be setting up the perfect storm of problems for your weekend plans. For the weekend warrior, injury comes when your spine just isn’t prepared to do the kind of work that you are asking it to do. For some this injury may consist of just a strain to the muscle and tissue around the spine, or it may be more serious. For some, this injury may be a disc bulge or even a herniation. You see, whatever activity you are performing, it is your spine that is doing the work behind the scenes. You have little sensors all over your spinal muscles that are constantly listening for changes in posture and motion. Your spine does this so that ahead of the curve, you can react appropriately to avoid injury. It is subluxation, or misalignment that clouds the ability of your spine to listen. Your brain may not be able to hear incoming warning messages that precede injury.

8

Receiving regular adjustments as part of your health plan ensures that you don’t develop these bad motion and postural patterns. It is one sure way to make sure you can hear all of the little changes that are taking place so that you can keep on being the best weekend warrior you can be. Yours in Health, Jared Van Wagner D.C. by Nicole Flothe Austin's next door neighbors gave him a baby bunny. It will go good with the chickens and baby sheep. Austin wants a little farm and to collect fresh eggs. We will post more pictures of his farm soon.

(*The photos above are not Austin's actual pets or eggs) Sheeps and Goats These are ideal for someone looking for a countrified pet or small livestock that yields milk, fiber, or meat. They don't require an eleaborate set up for shelter, nor an excessive amount of attention. It is best to have more than one since they're herd animals, but even a pair isn't much work.

I recently read an article titled the "Top Picks for Small Farm Animals" by Amy Grisak. She said that small "farm" animals, sometimes referred to as "micro-livestock," can be accomodated in both urban and suburban areas. Animals are part of a healthy ecosystem regardless of the property size. They eat excess graden waste, give us fresh ingredients for the kitchen, and supply manure for a robust garden. Rabbits don't take up much space, nor do chickens or goats. But since every animal has its benefits, limitations, and specific care requirements, take a few minutes to map out your options so you don't end up being overwhelmed. The best way to start your research is to ask someone that is already raising these type of animals. Josh Pecukonis is well-known in central Montana for raising heritage Navaho-Churro sheep, as well as rabbits, and a myriad of fowl. Another small animal veteran is Carol Cummins of Copley, Ohio. She's raised everything from emus to cows for decades on just 3 acres.

"You really don't need a lot of room," says Pecukonis. "It really depends on the climate, but a lot of people can have them in their backyard." "They're not as much work as a dog," points out Cummins. Chickens Pecukonis's favorite chicken is the 'Silver Penciled' Hamburg breed. "They're a very appealing heritage breed, and are super layers," he says. They'll produce eggs years after many modern layers are done, which is an important consideration for those who want chickens for eggs. Good luck with your little farms! To learn more about Austin and his journey to recovery visit Facebook.com/austinervinhealing. He was involved in a motor vehicle accident and is currently uses a wheelchair for moving and respiratory for breathing. He continues to progress with his nursing care, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and schooling. We all thank you for your prayers, support, and belief in his recovery.

by Cheryl Flothe As weekend travel is often squeezed between your workweek and the kids's school, it's good to be prepared and organized. A little advance planning can turn your mini family trips into fun times, free from stresses that come with forgetting something you really needed to take or to do before leaving. Here are a few tips to make your trips run smoother: k Confirm travel plans in advance and keep

k

k k k k

k k k

reservation documents and other important information in your travel bag, purse, or briefcase. Wash clothes the day before so you're not grabbing shirts and socks out of the dryer as you run out the door. Set a staging area (such as the kitchen table) where items you need to take are collected so you don't forget to pack them. Pack in advance, if possible, rather than waiting until the last minute. And pack light! Make a running list of items you normally need on trips, adding trip-specific items, when necessary. Keep a travel bag of toiletries your family uses packed and ready to go. A few zipper-type zip-locs in gallon and quart size can come in handy, so include them. Only use the travel bag for trips, replenishing, as necessary. That way it will always be ready when you are. Keep a special bag or backpack filled with kids' entertainment items---color or activity books, tablets with blank paper, crayons, markers, pencils, etc. Review your packing list before you leave the house so nothing is forgotten. Have a great trip!

Book Review by Nicole Flothe I am a part of BookLookBloggers and whenever I finish a book I provide a review and then get to choose another book. It's a Win, Win situation! This month I chose, The Art of Work by Jeff Goins. I enjoyed the storys in the book and how the author tied them into real life situations. Here are a few of my highlights:

Have you heard about this cell phone App? The developers hale from Kaunas, Lithuania. You can buy it for only .99 at your Play Store. Available for iPhones and Androids. It is a pretty cool App. We all love to take pictures of our furry friends, and this App helps you to take selfies with your pet or just cute shots of your pet.

Writing this book illuminated my own understanding of how purpose and vocation work together.

“Well, I can do that now using my phone camera,” you say. But how easy is it for you to get your pet to look at your camera? This neat App will provide you with a choice of three squeaker toy sounds that will get your dog to look at the camera!

Pining for what could have been only holds people back from living their lives now. Life is full of surprises, and it doesn't help us to fixate on regrets or try to recover what has been lost.

“Well, I have a cat, what can it do for me?” Well, you have a choice of a mouse squeak, and two different cat meows. When I pressed the cat meowing on my phone, my two cats came running to see who the intruder was in their space!

"More people are watching your life and...are gaining strength in their own live and in their own challenges because of what you're going through. I promise you: your life matters, your life is significant and things are happening that you don't even fully understand yourself."

The sound that you select and save will be played when you press your shutter button.

Frankl's memoir, Man's Search for Meaning, became one of the most popular books of the twentieth century, affecting millions of lives. In any great narrative, there is a moment when a character must decide to become more than a bystander. To learn more on the author: www.goinswriter.com

You can share your photos with others immediately via social networks and email which is conveniently built right into the App. http://www.pic-pet.com So, may I suggest that you download Pic-Pet Cam, capture a great shot of you and your pet, and then go to www.myfavoritefurr.com and enter the second quarter GiveA-Way Contest? All you need to do is email your picture to us. Winner will be determined by a random drawing. Next winner will be announced on June 30, 2015. Isn’t technology fun???

May Apps

by Nicole Flothe

Summer learning with your tech... by Beth Gatrell Students are beginning their summer break and for many "summer learning loss" is a great problem. By heading online you can keep up the skills you learn during the school year. Edutopia is a great site that gives tips on things to do to prevent that loss as well as activities to help.

May Apps: With the summer just around the corner my daughter looked for apps that would be entertaining. She choose, Fair Food, Commute, Head Soccer, and Kitty City for fun. I've been researching apps and found Acorns which is a way to invest in stocks with your spare change. For my work I design many social media posts and have found a great tool called Youzign that helps me create them. My daughter and I are getting into exercising and I've joined Orangetheory Fitness; she is doing a kids fitness app called Kurbo. Lastly I know with summer comes enough time to watch movies with the kids. We got HBO Go for the family shows. We've already watched a few great ones, like Big and DolphinTales 2. Looking forward to the summer holiday!

Kumon has some great tips on preventing summer learning loss as well as resources and programs. Think Stretch has some cool free activities as well as summer workbooks and programs available too. Internet 4 Classrooms offers great, free online learning programs for students in each grade level from Pre-K thru 12th. Another fun site kids may like is Learning Games for Kids featuring games geared toward math, typing, music and more. Kids will benefit from and enjoy the games and activities from sites like Jumpstart and Nick JR where they can even play with their favorite characters. PBS Kids offers cool learning games as well as a free App parents can download to watch their child’s activity on the site. For kids addicted to their video games, look for some fun educational options to use in between the car races and monster chases. Try downloading Apps like ABC Mouse and Starfall for some learning fun on the go. And don’t forget to download our free "Into Tomorrow" App while you’re at it!
