POETRY Summertime by Nicole Flothe

What is summer? It's hot weather and spending time with family. It's free time for kids and perfect beach time. It's vacations and staycations. It's garage sales and shopping. It's movies and board games. It's dancing in the summer rain. It's listening to thunderstorms and watching heat lightening. It's getting ready for back-toschool. It's making lasting summertime memories.

Letter from the Editor July was my son, Jake's, 13th birthday. He is officially a teenager! I find it interesting once kids reach this age---no more cheap tickets at the movie theater and they aren't supposed to order off the kids' menu. We start to expect more from them in what they can do and how they behave. I am excited to see his journey continue as he learns how to manage teenage life. We have another month of summer left and I will be juggling family entertainment, work, and back to school plans. What will you be doing this summer? Leave us a comment on Facebook.

Strategically Suited Book byReview Nicole Flothe I go every day to meet new clients or to my nursing office and choose to dress for success. I find that when I put a pretty dress on and some lip gloss I feel better about myself. When I feel better I accomplish more and I believe my clients decide to work with me because of how I look and feel. Style with Lee, Lee Heyward, recently wrote a book about style and how you can make great connections with others by dressing in styles that make you feel good. I was excited to have the opportunity to read her book and leave a review on Amazon.

Similarly, dressing in a way that gives

Dressing strategically, whether you’re in fourth grade or in your fourth year of business, is about how you appear to your client; but it's also about how you appear to yourself. You’re

and being totally open to an ever-changing world--that of children's fashion. CAF and its children's fashion, born about forty years ago, gave life to unique creations suitable for important moments. For today and for my tutorial on TV, I chose a trapeze dress from CAF (I recommend them for little girls) with drawings that make it really special. The dress is elegant in its extreme simplicity and that's what often is required for a ceremony or a special day. Soft colors like light green and light blue will make it even more fashionable. Green and blue together, in fact, give rise to a super trendy contrast. Even for us moms. Sometimes simplicity is the key to a perfect formal dress for children.

LIFE IN A RUT? TRY GOAL SETTING Ever feel like you’re in a rut? Spinning your wheels, never getting anything accomplished, going nowhere in life and having no particular place to go? You might want to try setting some goals for yourself. Goals can be long term, like where you want to be ten years from now. Or short term---things you need or want to accomplish in the near future. Having no goals and no sense of direction can keep you up at night worrying about your life. Short term goals are easier to achieve---make a list, set up a calendar, and decide how and when you want to tackle those goals. Long term goals, however, seem to be the ones that are harder to grasp. For those, you need to do some soul searching to decide what you want out of life and how to get there. Some people may call this a “life plan.” Without a plan, you could find yourself frustrated, stressed, and feeling you’re going nowhere. To start setting goals for yourself, get a notebook and start writing down what things in life are important to you---personal, health and fitness, or financial. Brainstorm ways you can go about getting there. If you don’t know how to achieve your goals, you might think about doing some research online or talking to friends and family or others you respect. The important thing is to figure out what you want in life and find a way to make it a reality. Here are some life goals most people have and

4

a few ideas to achieve them: Personal Development: 1. Set priorities. You can’t start working on your personal life if you don’t know what your goals are. 2. Stay away from stressful situations and negativity and learn ways to deal with those situations. 3. Don’t dwell on the past. Learn from your mistakes and move on to a better future. 4. Don’t put things off. It’s easy to say, “I’ll do it tomorrow,” but there’s no time like the present if you want to fulfill your goals in life. 5. Get rid of nagging thoughts that say you can’t do something---find a way to do what you want to do. 6. Take control of your life. Don’t let others do things you should do yourself. Keep plugging away at your life goals and you’ll get there. Health and Fitness: 1. Visit the doctor to get a baseline of your overall health---weight, blood pressure, or other health conditions you might have. Determine how to go about getting into the best health you can, both mental and physical. 2. Learn ways to improve your diet. What you eat is key to your health. 3. Exercise. Set up a regular routine to keep in shape. Either get a gym membership or work out at home.

www.heartbeatmagazinecom 4. Spend time outside when you can. People are healthier, both mentally and physically, when they spend time in the outdoors. 5. If you suffer from stresses you can’t control, try stress relief activities and get some professional help. It’s better to try to resolve your problems than to suffer through life with them. 6. Get enough sleep at night. Sleep keeps you healthier, boosts your mood, and improves concentration. Financial Fitness: 1. Set daily, weekly, and monthly budgets, taking into account all your expenses--present and future. 2. Keep track of your spending for several months to get an idea of how much your expenses are. 3. Live within your means, according to your budget. 4. Try to save money for things that might come up as well as future getaways or vacations. 5. Check your credit report and FICO scores. It’s important to know what’s on your credit report. Your credit rating and credit score affect your ability to get a loan for anything from a bicycle to a house. Apartment and home rentals, credit card approvals, and sometimes job applications require a good credit rating. At www.annualcreditreport.com you can get a free copy of your credit report from each credit reporting agency every 12 months---no strings attached. CreditKarma.com allows you to check

your credit and FICO score, but be prepared to be contacted by banks and various other lenders---that’s how Credit Karma makes their money. You can go online to a credit reporting agency such as Equifax or Experian or Transunion, but you’ll have to pay for your credit score. Career/Jobs: What kind of work would you like to do? 1. It’s important to have a job to support yourself, even if it’s not your dream career. 2. Keep a resume of your job skills, adding to it as time goes on. When a job comes up, you’ll be ready. 3. Talk to others who do that type of work and see how they got into it or read about those careers/jobs online. 4. Find out what kind of training or education you need for those jobs, where the training is offered, how much it costs, and how to finance your training. Some jobs require on-the-job training---job service might be able to help you get into those fields. 5. Go online or go to job service to find out if those jobs are available in your area and how much they pay. 6. Determine how much the job or career pays and compare it with your budget to make sure you can support yourself.

Young and Beardless Book Review

by Nicole Flothe

The Search for God, Purpose, and a Meaningful Life

pursue a clear-cut purpose in their lives.

I went through the books on BookLookBloggers to decide what I would review this month. Young & Beardless captured my interest with the title and the photos on the front. Once I started reading the book I realized it was a story from John Luke Robertson who is a part of the Duck Dynasty Family.

Teens and young adults will enjoy reading his story, and they will benefit by reading Robertson’s wisdom and perspective on how to grow up and live out your purpose. And, with the Robertsons, this book is sure to be fun!

Book Summary: John Luke Robertson, may be young and beardless, but he has a lot to say about growing up and discovering your purpose. John Luke Robertson, the oldest son of Willie and Korie Robertson, and brother of Dancing with the Stars sensation, Sadie Robertson, shares his story of what it’s like to grow up as a Robertson and all the fun and craziness that entails, as well as what he has learned as he has stepped out into his own unique experiences. He also shares what it’s like to navigate the walk from boyhood to becoming a man. Topics in this book include friendship, kindness, dreaming big, embracing your God-given uniqueness, taking chances, and choosing mentors. John Luke speaks frequently on dreams (how to build a dream for your life), schemes (how to plan for your dream to come true), and building teams (choosing the people around you who will become a team that helps make your dream come true through their support, honesty, and care). He will incorporate these important guidelines into the book, ultimately 6 helping young people learn how to find and

Throughout the book he finishes each chapter with a summary of a story he has read. He shares what meaning it has provided in his life and how it would be beneficial to apply some of their tips to your life. One of his tips was to create a toolbox for your future. Add things that inspire and motivate you. Another question he suggests you ask youself is, "Can you picture yourself 10 years from now?" Name some of the things you'll have accomplished by then. This will give you a better plan and allow you to be more focused on your goals. The book is an inspiration on how to live. To learn more visit youngandbeardless.com

Beets - Superfood of the month Beets are a unique source of phytonutrients called betalains. Betanin and vulgaxanthin are the two best-studied betalains from beets, and both have been shown to provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification support. The detox support provided by betalains includes support of some especially important Phase 2 detox steps involving glutathione. Although you can see these betalain pigments in other foods (like the stems of chard or rhubarb), the concentration of betalains in the peel and flesh of beets gives you an unexpectedly great opportunity for these health benefits. In recent lab studies on human tumor cells, betanin pigments from beets have been shown to lessen tumor cell growth through a number of mechanisms, including inhibition of pro-inflammatory enzymes (specifically, cyclooxygenase enzymes). The tumor cell types tested in these studies include tumor cells from colon, stomach, nerve, lung, breast, prostate and testicular tissue. While lab studies by themselves are not proof of beets' anti-cancer benefits, the results of these studies are encouraging researchers to look more closely than ever at the value of betanins and other betalains in beets for both prevention and treatment of certain cancer types.

demonstrated for betanin, isobetanin, and vulgaxanthin. One mechanism allowing these phytonutrients to lessen inflammation is their ability to inhibit the activity of cyclooxygenase enzymes (including both COX-1 and COX-2). The COX enzymes are widely used by cells to produce messaging molecules that trigger inflammation. Under most circumstances, when inflammation is needed, this production of pro-inflammatory messaging molecules is a good thing. However, under other circumstances, when the body is undergoing chronic, unwanted inflammation, production of these inflammatory messengers can make things worse. Several types of heart disease— including atherosclerosis—are characterized by chronic unwanted inflammation.Â

What's most striking about beets is not the fact that they are rich in antioxidants; what's striking is the unusual mix of antioxidants that they contain. We're used to thinking about vegetables as rich in antioxidant carotenoids, and in particular, betacarotene; among all well-studied carotenoids, none is more commonly occurring in vegetables than beta-carotene. Many of the unique phytonutrients present in beets have been shown to function as anti-inflammatory compounds. In particular, this anti-inflammatory activity has been

Austin Goes to Hawaii by Aunt Nicole Flothe

Austin was granted a Make-AWish Hawaii trip with his family. Here are a few posts from Tina, Austin's mom: Heading to airport! Woot! Woot! Thank you Make-A-Wish! This really is a dream come true! This wish has a huge impact. We were in Hawaii 3 years ago for 2 weeks, it was a mother and son trip to see family. When we came back home to Alaska a week after our trip, Austin was in a horrible car accident. This is Austin's first trip on a commercial flight and back to Hawaii since his accident. I also want to thank Diamond Parking for treating us with such VIP status. I love Diamond Parking. I've been with them from the first day they opened up for business. They always gave us oilfield workers' discounts. I really want to say thank you because they help Make-A-Wish families by donating parking.

We had the flight of a lifetime! Alaska Airlines was so amazing! I can't believe how incredible they all were! The passengers all came up and said hi to my baby and some of them gave him gifts. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Captain Eric Werner and his flight crew! You all were top-notch. What an amazing day out on the beach with Access Surf and Hawaii Make-AWish. Thanks to all for your incredible hospitality and the willingness to make this one of the greatest wishes!! Austin has been having a blast.

He continues to progress with his nursing care, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and schooling. We all thank you for your prayers, support, and belief in his recovery.

9 Tips For A Cool Summer Kitchen by Cheryl Flothe

It’s hot outside this summer and your kitchen can get toasty with all that cooking. Here are a few tips for keeping your cool: 1. Minimize oven use. You can pre-cook a few days in advance, refrigerate, then combine for your meal. 2. Use oven or stovetop early in the day when it’s cooler and warm foods in the microwave later. 3. Choose the smallest burner you can when cooking on the stovetop and keep the lid on. This prevents heat from spreading. 4. Use your microwave – It doesn’t add any heat to your kitchen. 5. Cook in your crockpot---and keep the lid on! 6. Bring cold foods to room temperature and prep before cooking so they’re ready to add quickly. 7. Use less tough meats to minimize cooking time. 8. Grill outside---food is more fun, tastier, and the kitchen stays cool. 9. Plan your menu to include meals and dishes that don’t require slaving over a hot stove.

Beef & Swiss Wrap Ingredients * 2 whole grain or regular large tortillas * 2 tablespoons Neufchatel cheese, spreadable cream cheese, or other spread of your choice * 2 leaves romaine or other lettuce of your choice * 1 cup fresh spinach * 6 slices deli roast beef or other slice meat * 2 slices Swiss cheese or use any cheese your family likes * 6 cherry tomatoes, sliced in half * Ground pepper to taste

Directions 1. Heat the wraps in the microwave on high for 20-30 seconds. 2. On right side of one wrap (the side that will fold in last), spread 1 tablespoon Neufchatel cheese, and tomatoes in the center of the wrap, leaving 1/3 of the wrap open at the bottom. Fold the third up over the bottom of fillings, then fold in the left side and roll toward the right, letting the Neufchatel or spread seal the wrap together. Repeat with the second wrap. 3. Experiment with other fillings such as thinly sliced cucumber, olives, regular tomatoes, etc.

Breakfast Around the World by Cheryl Flothe

Travel to other countries usually involves sampling their cuisine. Although American cooking is found at various restaurants, your hotel or B&B will probably serve what’s traditional in that country. When my husband and I were in London I had the “Traditional English Breakfast” of sausage, eggs, sliced tomatoes, beans, and toast; while my husband ate simple oatmeal. In Paris our breakfast was similar to the German breakfast below---cold-cuts, breads, butter and jam, cheeses, boiled eggs, and fruit. The Swedish breakfast is similar, but it’s served with mayonnaise or butter on bread with fish or meats, sliced boiled eggs, and vegetables on top. They also sometimes have tubes of caviar to spread on meats. And most breakfasts are served with strong coffee or tea.

Several countries such as Cuba, Spain, and Italy start their day with a simple meal of bread with butter and jam, brioche or other sweet breads; and coffee, often with cream. Spain puts a tomato spread on their toast along with their coffee, and sometimes they have churros, a sweet fried pastry. A Chinese favorite is Youtiao, fried dough sticks, with Dimsum soup or rice Congee (a type of porridge), and warm soy milk. Of course, many countries including England, Ireland, Scotland, and others, eat porridge for breakfast. In South Africa, they eat a porridge called Puta Pap made with maize meal. This dish is drier than the oatmeal many are used to, and they eat it with milk and sugar for breakfast. It’s also used as a side dish with tomato onion sauce for other meals, particularly barbeque.

Many countries, such as Turkey and Japan, have an array of foods for their first meal of the day they might also eat other times of the day. Turkey has bread with butter, jam and honey; cheese, eggs, olives, vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers, Turkish sausage, and Turkish tea. Since Japan harvests a lot of fish, they often have fish, a Japanese omelet, tofu, rice, pickled vegetables, and Miso soup.

Japanese Breakfast

Jamaicans often eat Ackee, a fruit that looks like scrambled eggs when fried and is often served with fried plantains, salted fish, fresh fruit, and breads. And in Mexico, they might have Chilaquiles, corn tortillas cut in quarters and fried; Huevos Rancheros, a Mexican egg dish; and sometimes sweet rolls, all served with coffee.

When you travel, make sure to sample the foods from places you visit! You just might find a new favorite recipe to bring home!

Tech Tips & Apps Kid's Tracking with Tech! by Beth Gatrell With all the kids out and about for summer, parents are turning to tech more and more to help keep track of them. The most popular way, especially for older kids, is to give them a cellphone and have them check in. They can text you selfies of where they are or use tools like Facetime to have a face-to-face conversation. You can also share your location with them so you can be updated of their GPS location to check in. Some cell phones are able to be tracked online using features like FindMyiPhone which will track the location of the phone without them even knowing. And many other tools are available that allow you to check the current location as well as checking locations of places they've been.

Summer APPS by Nicole Flothe We have been out and about this summer and to find ways to save money while we're eating out I downloaded the Tropical Smoothie app to get a free sandwich and the 7-eleven app to get a free drink after our 7th visit. To stay on track with my weight management I downloaded MyPlate to track my food and Stack to offer interesting exercise plans. A few fun games added were Basketball and Merged! I really like my FotoRus app to design collages of photos and edit them and HDR Camera is amazing for the visual effects it provides. The last app I added this month is WaveApps Invoice which allows me to create an invoice for my client and then send them an email right from my phone. Quick & easy.

Helpful services from your provider allow you to track your child's cellphone and activities and there are many apps available to assist. A cool one you may want to check out is MamaBear which lets parents customize the alerts for themselves and their child like sending an alert to parents of when their child arrives and departs a destination, quick check in with emoticon, emergency alerts, and even alerting parents of speeding. Other devices like the Trax Family are also great for keeping informed of your child's whereabouts. And for those of you with furry kids, they can get lost too. Check out The Whistle and Pocket Finder for devices made especially for them. However you choose to keep track of your loved ones, we wish all of our friends safe and fun summer days... “Into Tomorrow.

Featured Foundation by Nicole Flothe

WHAT IS HOPEY"S HEART FOUNDATION? The Hopey's Heart Foundation was formed in memory of Tina Charles' late aunt, Maureen "Hopey" Vaz, who died of multiple organ failure on March 9th, 2013. Hopey was known for having a very giving heart and when her own heart failed it was a tragic loss to her family and an eye-opener to Charles, who prior to the passing of her aunt, made a $14,775 donation for ten Automated External Defibrillators(AED) to the New York Department of Education and the Wes Leonard Heart Team. Through fundraising events, campaigns and Tina's personal donation of half her WNBA salary the past two seasons, Hopey's Heart Foundation has successfully placed over 200 AED's worldwide through its AED Grant Program. 189 domestically and 18 internationally placed. The Automated External Defibrillator(AED) is a computerized medical device. It was designed to allow minimally-trained people to provide lifesaving defibrillation (electric shock to the heart) to victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest(SCA).

• Nearly 383,000 out of hospital sudden cardiac arrests occur annually in the U.S. It's a leading cause of death of people over 40 in the U.S. and other countries. • Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when electrical impulses in the heart become rapid or chaotic, which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. • Many victims appear healthy with no known heart disease or other risk factors. Sudden cardiac arrest is indiscriminate towards race, age & gender. AED benefits: • Allows minimally-trained people to provide lifesaving defibrillation to viictims of SCA. • Having an AED close by can mean the difference between life and death for a victim of SCA. With every minute that goes by, survival rates drop up to 10 percent. • Survival rates between 40-50 percent have been achieved where AED programs have been successfully implemented. We are the Bears Booster Club for the Palmetto High School Bears Basketball Team, Naples, FL. (Non-profit) We are developing the basketball players into strong young men and giving them every opportunity to develop their basketball skills at the same time challenging them to be great! The head coach of the Bears was awarded Coach of The Year last season and has coached for over 30 years.

We want to pay off our Dr Dish Shooting Machine, go to one more tournament before school starts, and prepare a budget for a several team tournament at the first of the school year. And we need to raise funds to send players for a very high level training IMG Academy that will teach mental strength in game situations, and more.

The total we need to raise is $4,000. The booster club will spend 100% of all money raised for team development and to pay off training equipment. We need the money within the next 3 weeks.

For the players to have professional training equipment, new tournaments and potential for training on a one on one basis, will be a life changing event. Visit
