typology white desert location: Antarctica size: 20’ diameter / pod designers: Patrick and Robyn Woodhead, Sam Hendrick project year: 2006 The lounge pod is fitted with luxury furniture and is illuminated by small windows that bring natural light into the space.
The pods are made of fiberglass and weigh 3 tons each.
White Desert, described as the “only luxury camp in the interior of Antarctica”, is comprised of igloo-like pods. These pods are separated into needs, and include six bed pods that sleep 2 in each, as well as a shower, kitchen, reception, lounge, and dining room pod.
The bathroom within one of the sleeping pods features modern design, while keeping the necessities, including a composting toilet.
“We knew the camp’s energy had to come from Antarctica’s abundant natural resources.” White Desert is a “zero impact” space, which means it is considered a temporary camp, all waste is removed from the camp, and it is run on renewable power, using photovoltaic solar panels for electrical supply and solar water heaters for the shower system.
The sleeping pods are heated and feature headboards that provide a separation between the sleeping quarters and the en suite bathroom.
DESIGN IMPLICATIONS • Antarctica has an abundance of natural resources • Using warm tones in a frigid atmosphere makes for a comfortable and cozy space • Making the camp small ensures that the trip is viewed as special to the guests
The dining room pod features a warm color palette of tan and grey. In the center is a circular oak table, where meals made by a personal, professional chef are served to the guests.
