The intent of this design is to create a public green space that incorporates the social needs of the community while restoring the ecological value of the landscape. The curvilinear form system reflects the natural forms of the Speed & Eramosa Rivers that run through the city of Guelph. Pedestrian circulation on site will be of highest importance. These pathways will create strong connections to both the Eramosa River Trail and Royal Recreation Trail. Stone planters will be used to separate roads from pedestrian walkways. Vegetation on-site is a large factor when trying to create a sense of nature. The majority of the landscape will be planted with native ground cover, perennials, shrubs and trees. Hard surfaces will be composed of limestone pavers with Mother-of-Thyme growing in between the slabs. This will create a more ecologically friendly surface will creating strong curvilinear forms throughout the site. The shorelines will be planted with Common Winterberry, River Birch, Red-osier dogwood and other vegetation that are suitable in the naturalization of shoreline areas. The water feature along Wellington Street is to be used as a skating rink during the winter months. During the other seasons the inner oval is to be filled with plantings while the outer portion remains a splash pad. The plantings should be installed in the early spring and removed in the late fall.

[ design intent ] TheVillage ofYorkville was originally a parking lot that was converted into a neighborhood park. The design crafted by Schwartz Smith Meyer Landscape Architects Inc., and PWP Landscape Architecture illustrates the range in Canada’s diverse landscapes. For forty years the community was dissatisfied with the parking lot, and fought for change. The Village of Yorkville park reflects the history of Yorkville and pays tribute to the pre-existing Victorian homes that once occupied the site. This park has won numerous awards, including: American Society of Landscape Architects Award City of Toronto Urban Design Award of Excellence International Downtown’s Association Award of Merit

The need to reconnect this space with the waterfront has been establish and thus taking precedent from successful urban water front parks helped shape this design. The strong fluid form system of this design reflect the waves of the lake. From an aerial perspective the planting and pathways shape this idea well on site the sculptural work and site features such as the pergolas reflect this on a smaller scale. Overall, this design is intended to create a urban waterfront park that will be the first step to restoring Ontario Place to a fun and exciting parkland that reflects the beauty of our province.
