Senior Project - in Progress Stem Cell Storage

HUMAN FORTIFICATION instructor - axel schmitzberger

The project proposes a new building type to hold a stem cell bank and which includes a lab facility. Stem cells banking require a distinct program type, and thus require a distinct building type. The project references baroque techniques as they engage in a complex and formal strategy to encompass religious, social, political, and architectural problems at once. Stem cells banks will become dominant domains and programs that exhibit godly worship, immortality, and cutting edge science while touching on social and political issues. The building acts as a symbol of the admiration of life, health, and the misconception that it can be controlled by humans. Human stem cells are worshiped as reliques are in the baroque church. Located in the heart of El Pueblo, Los Angeles, the projects connects between hospitals, temples, and cultural zones. Baroque methods of urban planning were considered in order to connect the different communities. The historical and cultural connection amplifies the worship aspect of the structure and what it represents. Baroque architecture entailed an exploration into the manipulation of perspective that emerged from new scientific revelations that became accepted by the Catholic Church. The corner plays a vital function in the understanding of space as it was dealt and discussed by many. These methods are re-evaluated and set as the embryonic system for the development of the project’s architecture. The form, therefore, takes shape from an overlay of geometries allowing the form to be manipulated while still confining to set techniques. The program is incased by a double shell which is formed from these primitive shapes. The interchanging spaces allow for manipulation of space and perspective and a play on indoor versus outdoor and public versus private. The curved shells and manipulated spaces become an instrument to communicate people’s fascination with life and health.

Stem cells storage facilities are becoming more popular as public interest grows toward the preservation of cord blood cells. In 2005, Proposition 71, the California stem cell research and cures initiative, passed and let to an increase in research and the later surge in sales. Stem cell storage facilities have been integrated with other program to accommodate for the demands, however, as more facilities increase their storage space to accommodate for this cell type, new programmatic concern need to be taken into consideration. The program is not limited to the simple storage of stem cells, as it also deals with human interaction, or lack of, with the program. “Borromini’s intended to make us not only victims but witnesses of the artifice of the humanization of space” Paolo Portoghesi, The Rome of Borromini 1968

Site selection adheres to the pilgrimage concepts of baroque - an interconnected web of sites that tell a story. Site and program are the focal point to which people come to see and be seen as a social status and worship of self. The site is situated in connection to medical facilities, cemeteries, and religious structures. Adjacencies to hospitals are crucial for the validity of the program and its functionality. The connection with life and death as well as a greater being links the conceptual connection to worship and admiration.

In a micro scale, the site at El Pueblo is located in a central location in downtown Los Angeles. The site connects several communities, including Chinatown, Little Tokyo, and El Pueblo. Furthermore, the site sits on the veins of central circulation in Los Angeles, including Union Station, the 101 Freeway, Los Angeles Ave, and Alameda Ave. The intricate web of circulation does not favor any social status thus allowing all parts of the population equal access to the site.

The distinct axes evident in the UCLA plan continue in the design on the new school on medicine located over an existing parking lot on the south side of the campus. The site connects two major axes on the UCLA campus. These, along with the existing conditions and building on site lead to the design on the SOM. Each main path of circulation cuts through the initial massing analysis. The North-South path cuts through the building and allows for a new entry to the campus. The East-West path is an interior path that connects the campus to the building. The paths further divide the building into the programmatic groupings. The paths are accented by the corresponding planes. When circulation changes occur these planes break and open up. The unique changes in levels, due to the existing parking structure and adjacent quad, are accommodated in the building. The large auditorium connects the two masses both in plan and section. The large programs are divided and rearranged in rhythmic order to create a pattern of service and served spaces.

INTERSECTING THOUGHTS instructor - nadim itani

Four intersecting bars with separate programs connect. Interaction between those program develops to increase the interaction between the contrasting programs and students. Developed at the center of the school. The library contains loud and quiet spaces depending on the interaction with the multipurpose room. The MPR is accessed from any part of the school and is directly connected to the library. In order to provide the desired quiet paces, the library’s reading and learning area are placed in the two edges of the north-south bars providing separation and views. Program was placed on both levels but both had direct access to the playground areas. While all were connected to the play areas, the circulation paths were designed to allow for assembly. The paths have seating and gathering spaces that fold from the project’s boundaries. The path gathering areas are shaded as they are located on the north facades. Which also helps the classrooms to receive the maximum amount of natural light. The four bars enclose the interior courtyard while creating an articulated entry to the school. The activity in the library can be partially viewed from the entrance. The massing design reinforces the importance of education. By allocation the library as the main focal point, students and parents are informed about the school’s priorities. The library can be seen from all courtyards. The central courtyard is tailored for younger students as it provides an area protected from the elements and the athletic activities.
