HEAVILY INVOLVED IN RETAIL BANK ROLL-OUT FOR MAJOR CLIENT. THESE BANKS HAD A ‘PROTOTYPE’ BUT WERE ALMOST NEVER ‘PROTOTYPICAL’. THEY USUALLY INCLUDED DESIGN EXERCISES WHERE WE WERE COORDINATING CLOSELY EVERY WEEK WITH THE CLIENT DESIGN LEAD. I INTRODUCED THE ENSCAPE TOOL TO OUR TEAM AND TO THE CLIENT.

THESE DESIGN EXERCISES WOULD REQUIRE US TO BUILD VERY DETAILED & ACCURATE MODELS SO THAT WE COULD TAKE THEM ON VIRTUAL WALKTHRUS USING ENSCAPE. PART OF THE CHALLENGE WITH THE ‘PROTOTYPE’ MODELS WE RECEIVED WERE THAT NOTHING IN THE MODEL WAS “LIVE”. THE PREVIOUS ARCHITECT HAD TRIED TO USE REVIT AS IF IT WERE AUTOCAD.

My primary repsonsibilities during my internship with SCB in San Francisco were documenting the individual unit elevations and plans, vertical circulation, conducting light studies, while also cleaning up the Revit model. I was also responsible for curating presentation documents and boards for different community hearing meetings with the City of Oakland, which is located in Northern California. During my time with Studios architecture located in San Francisco, CA I was largly responsible for the construction of a highly detailed, large scale model. I was held responsible for finding a company to complete the laser cutting and overseeing that the parts came back to us correctly. I then assembled all of these parts. I also 3D printed the sunshades and modeled the interior of the 1st level and the courtyardandlandscapingintheback.Themodelisat 3/32” = 1’-0”, with etch lines to show operable windows in the units, as well as panels lines on the facade. This model was used in most weekly client meetings. I also worked with Studios on their SD drawing set and DD drawing set, compiling facade studies and helping to curate different facade studies for meetings with consultants. I worked with them on 3D printing massing models for client meetings and overseeing documentation of the models.

A large portion of my responsibility other than project documentation was designing and introducing 3 differenct ceiling options for the lobby, ranging from a more expensive statement wood slat ceiling or the salvage and reuse of existing ceiling tiles. I used Enscape3d for Revit to genereate 3 quick design render studies so the client could easily see what they liked the most.

Renderings were the most useful tool in this project. PNC bank wanted to incorporate a new updated security desk to their main lobby so that someone could see who was entering and exiting the building. They were struggling to visualize what someone sitting at this new desk would be able to see based on different design options. We were able to pull quick renderings that helped them visualize their new desk and what it would look like, as well as being able to understand how it would function for security staff.

The 1950s built country home was perfect for my newlywed friends but they weren’t sure that that bathroom and laundry space were built to suit their needs. The bathroom that came with the house was entirely too small, and the laundry room was oversized. The client wanted a solution that would give them a walkin closet off the master suite, a double vanity, a stand alone tub, and a full sized walk in shower. They also wanted to keep an area to store their linens.

After meeting with the client multiple times to get a full understanding of what they needed to make the bathroom serve all of their needs while also giving space back to the master suite, I came up with a solution to demo the demising wall between the small bathroom and oversized laundry room, and then the wall between the master bedroom and the laundry room. We also decided to remove the diagonal wall to square off the entry into the bathroom which would also give space back to each of the rooms, and remove the awkward vestibule at the bathroom and bedroom doors. The final solution created a long and narrow bathroom, but still met all of the client’s needs. It provided a space for their washer and dryer machine, storage for their linens, a double vanity, a full sized tub and walk-in shower, as well as a walk-in closet for the Master Bedroom

Given the challenge of thinking of what a border between two countries is and how architecture can be used to portray the relationship between two countries, we were to develop a border crossing station between two countries who did not have free travel across their borders. I chose the location of the Amur river between Heihe, China and Blagoveshchensk, Russia. I wanted to celebrate the new friendship that had formed between these two countries.

Tectonics is the art of construction and how it can be used as a basis for design. I began by looking at how columns and beams come together and what that joint then means to architecture. I developed a motif that can be see throughout my tectonic system. These joints also begin to create portals of space as you move through the promenade that was developed by my tectonic system.

As we progressed in developing our tectonic systems, we were then challenged to develop these into an enclosed space that still spoke to the languages of our tectonic systems. My program was to develop a visitor center for Trammel Fossil Park, located in Sharonville, Ohio. I understood that learning about this site and the fossils found on it as being the most important aspect of this project. I wanted to create a gallery in the visitor center that allowed you to look out over the hillside as you were learning about it.
