BEHIND THE DESIGNS NICOLE ROEDESHIMER Creative Director TRAFFIC, PRODUCTION COORDINATOR
Nicole is a graphic designer living in Lincoln Square, IL. She likes to consider herself a connoisseur, chronic puzzle-seeker, and lifelong learner. Her ultimate goal is to transcend the generic title of “design” by helping others transform ideas that begin as a shapeless mass and mold them into powerful, holistic, soul-stirring solutions.. When she isn’t designing, you can find Nicole on a new adventure, exploring nature, chasing sunsets, or flirting with the globe.
CAITLYN SMITH Art Director TRAFFIC, PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR
Caitlyn Smith is a graphic designer living in Lincoln Park, IL. Travel, design, and fashion are the three things she is the most passionate about, well except her family and friends, of course. Staying busy in the fast paced city life keeps her going and excited about all the things she accomplishes. Since she was thirteen years old, she has known that she wanted to do something involving design. Caitlyn is a publication designer for magazines and fashion designers. Dreams and plans are never too big or unrealistic for her. She believes in just putting the work in to making them happen!
KATIE ABITHEIRA Designer ESTIMATOR, COPY EDITOR, TRAFFIC
Katie is a graphic designer living in Lincoln Park, IL. She is originally from Detroit, Michigan. Detroit is where her heart truly belongs. She has a great passion for all things that are design-related, however, publication design and collateral design are her two specialties. She loves incorporating bold colors and clean typography into her work. When she isn’t designing, Katie loves putting her nose in a really good book and getting lost, listening to her favorite band, the 1975, and cooking. Spending time with family is also always a must, so she tries to as much as she can.

POSE PERFECT
get ting your engagement photos right! BE YOURSELVES
If you are not used to being in front of a camera this simple task can become an issue when trying to capture the best photos. If you are typically goofy, then be goofy. If you and your man like to do certain activities together, then photograph that. The only way to capture the bond that you two have will be to ignore the camera and be yourself. Take direction from the photographer but don’t get lost in it, still add your own personal touch to every pose.
BE PREPARED You want to look your best in your engagement photos, but stressing about the details will leave you tired…and that is the last thing we want to capture. Instead just prepare yourself with the timing of the photos. You most likely don’t want to have an all-nighter prior to your photos or if you know work is going to be stressful during a certain week then schedule the photos for another time. Timing is everything when you want to look and feel your best. Others ways to prepare are by sorting out the location(s) and the outfits.
LOCATION The place(s) that you choose to take photos speaks to who you are as a couple so it’s important to decide on a place that will cater to your personalities. Choose a place that means something to you, reminds you of a time you had together, or is the ‘feeling’ of the wedding. You will be the most comfortable and relaxed together if you are familiar with the location.
18
19
BE PREPARED These are your photos and no one else’s so choose you favorite outfit(s), aside from what might be trendy and popular. These photos will be looked back at for years and years to come so let them capture the two of you at your most natural state as a newly engaged couple. You want to look like yourself and not a made up version of yourself, so stick to the basics. Typically, a casual outfit such as jeans and a cute top, makes for really adorable day-to-day type photos but then change into something a bit more feminine for a more dressed up look. You will appreciate the variety of photos that comes along with changing your outfits. The time of day and weather play a huge part in your photos as well so be sure to look that up so you wear the proper attire and won’t be freezing or sweating during the time the photos are being taken..
HAVE FUN This is a very special moment in a couple’s life so enjoy it! Don’t stress about every detail of the pictures or what angle is best or if your hair is out of place. Love is the best accessory you have for photos because it is expressed through the eyes and through the affection shown that in turn creates unforgettable images. Flirt a little bit while you are taking photos, act like high school sweethearts, kiss when you want to, make each other laugh. When you have fun with it, the best and most natural photos can be captured, leaving a lasting impression.

THE PLANNING HOW TO HAVE A SUMMER WEDDING
how to have
A SUMMER WEDDING If you’re dreaming of a gorgeous outdoor wedding, summer is typically the ideal season to say, “I do” - but there is a lot more than weather to love about this time of year. Here is what you need to know about how to host your perfect summer soiree.
5 REASONS TO HAVE A SUMMER WEDDING
1
warm weather
Need we say more? While spring and fall can definitely bring the most unpredictable temperatures, rain and sometimes even snow, summer is known for sunny blue skies and warm temperatures that often last until the evening, making it the perfect time of year for outdoor nupitals.
2
more free time
“Workloads in many industries tend to lighten up and some people have summer Fridays, which allow for a more open schedule to both plans and weddings,” says Annie Lee, the principal planner and owner of Daughter of Design located in New York City. “Also for couples who are in school, it’s great to take advantage of your summer break for last-minute wedding errands and equally ideal for honeymoons.”
3
abundance of available blooms
More flower varieties are in bloom on the summer solsitice than on any other day of the year. That means that you will have a greater selection of in-season florals, making for more dynamic, colorful, and affordable wedding decor arrangements.
4
built-in décor
Mother Nature will save you on décor in the summer months. The warm weather allows couples in many parts of the country to take advantage of gorgeous natural backdrops, randing from water front locales to lush gardens and picturesque mountaintops.
5
bright colors do not look out of place
For winter weddings, the color palettes tend to be a little more subdued to look right with the season. However, most brides want to use more cheerful and bright colors for their wedding. In the summer, the sky is truly the limit in this regard. You can pick bright hues and not have to worry that they will not look right for the season. Summer brides tend to have a lot more wiggle room in the color palette department than any other season.

PEARLS WITH PURPOSE teaches women in the Philippines and India to create beautiful, handcrafted jewelry, sells them online, and at events, and gives them a means to support their families. They support 3 initiatives: 1. Micro-enterprise training for disadvantaged individuals in mulitple different developing countries throughout the world 2. Educational Scholarships 3. Bi-annual container shipments Through these initiatives, they have trained over 300 individuals, aided over 200 kids with their educational pursuits and shipped over 2,600 boxes into 22 provinces in the Philippines. They have had co-ops in Philippines, India, Thailand, and Cambodia.

36
THE PLANNING PEARLS WITH PURPOSE
HOW DID PEARLS WITH PURPOSE START? In 2002, as I was searching for loose pearls that are used for jewelry making, a hobby of mine at the time, I received a personal e-mail from a 68-year-old woman located in the Philippines who stated, “If you import finished jewelry pieces from me, you will help women in my country.” This is what began my growing interest in the women who are behind the pearls and I became aware of the lack of adequate food, clothing , and other basic necessities among the Filipino families, and set out to help.
My first exposure (outside of middle class America) was when I took my trip to Mexico 15 years ago to an area called Creel. I saw people living out of railway cars, young children hauling buckets of water, beggars in extreme circumstances, malnourished babies, and it was a truly humbling experience. I made a silent vow to myself that if the opportunity presented itself to me to truly make an impact on my fellowman, I would do everything in my power to fulfill it. And that was what happened in 2002. A woman sent an e-mail with a ‘need’. She made me aware of living situations that were deplorable by American standards.
My first trip to the Philippines in 2006 confirmed that these conditions were much worse that I needed to do more. The products they were making needed to be moved quickly and in the most effective way so that they had a consistent earning potential. We developed Pearls with Purpose Partners as the vehicle to move all the products that are created. This is done via websales, exhibitor trade shows, and distributors.
She shared with me real stories of friends and people that she was interacting with on a daily basis that were raw and mind numbing. Women poisoning their children just so they didn’t starve to death. Women having to give some of their children away because they could not even feed them. Children being placed in dumpsters. Men squandering all their earnings on drugs and alcohol, and then beating their wives. I knew there was a way to break this cycle of poverty. I knew there was a way to break this cycle of poverty. HAIRSTYLES FOR YOUR HAPPILY EVER AFTER Getting married is one of the most exciting times in a bride’s life, and choosing the perfect wedding hairstyle is one of the most overwhelming decisions to make. So, Here are seven tips to having the most beautiful hairstyle on your wedding day.
50
1. CHOOSE YOUR DRESS FIRST Your dress must be the deciding factor for everything else around it. Find a dress that compliments you and makes you feel like a million bucks. Don’t try to fake it you need a dress that you will feel beautiful in all day. It’s your special day and you don’t want to be uncomfortable in your dress or not feel like yourself. A good wedding hairdresser will tailor and make a style just for you and to compliment the dress. They know what they are doing and you should trust your hairdresser she’s the professional.
2. BE REALISTIC If you have very fine hair, or very short hair, deal with the fact that there are some limitations with the texture of your hair, and do not try and bully your stylist into creating an abundance of hair when it is virtually impossible. If you have loads of curls, don’t try and convince yourself that a sleek, skinny hair style is what is going to work for you.
3. BE PREPARED TO BE FLEXIBLE A good hairdresser who specializes in bridal hairstyles will be able to discuss all the options with you, taking your dress into account, your hair texture, whether you are wearing a veil or not, and if you plan to wear flowers in your hair. Find the best one that suits your hair, your personality and the bridal look you are after. Be flexiable and understanding with your hairdresser!

4. KEEP IT REAL Your wedding day is a special one, and doesn’t mean that you have to beat your hair into submission to be something it is not. If you have a very busy dress, with lots of bead work and detail, you will need to make your bridal hairdo take a backseat, and let the hair quietly compliment the focal point, which is you, and your dress. If you are wearing a simple dress, you can dress the hair up a bit more, but if you don’t feel comfortable having a huge up do, you won’t feel comfortable on the day. Make your wedding hairstyle all about you, just the more glamorous you. Don’t change who you are, you will feel weird and it will show. Be yourself and enjoy your special day.
5. TRIAL RUN This point is important when it comes to your wedding day, just because your stylist is a wedding specialist, does not mean they do bridal hairstyles that you will like. Book a trial appointment, and get an idea of what kind of hair you are in for on your wedding day. If you have a good relationship with your stylist you should feel comfortable enough to point out any changes you would like to make. Don’t be afraid to speak up. If the salon you have booked your trial at wants to charge you a fortune move swiftly along, bridal hair trials should be a complimentary service or very cheap from good hairdressing salons. There is no need to pay a fortune when you are already paying a lot for your wedding. You do not need to pay more on something that should be complimentary or a low fee.
6. THE VEIL Wearing a veil is a very personal issue, and these days have more of a nostalgic connotation and less of a religious one. Brides do not have to wear a veil if they don’t want to. There may be some requirements from certain churches and other religions, but again that is completely a personal matter. If you really don’t want to wear a veil, you are in luck, you don’t need too. Fascinators have come back into fashion with a bang and you can find a super modern version of the classic veil and dress it up for your wedding day. Veils can be very long and elegant or they can be small and to the point, it all depends on your personality and how the dress looks as well.
7. SHORT HAIR Bridal hairstyles most often conjure up images of long, wavy locks embedded with pearls and diamonds or swept up sleek, classical looks, but many brides these days are moving away from the tradition look and keeping their hair short for the occasion, and although styles are somewhat limited with short hair, it can make for a really dramatic entrance. Have your haircut two weeks before the wedding, as it will have a chance to soften at the edges after two weeks of growth.

BEAUTY TIPS NATURAL BRIDAL GLOW
ultimate cheat sheet:
NATUR AL BRIDAL GLOW A little cheat sheet to help you avoid any possible makeup-induced meltdowns!
STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF Yes, this may sound like a quote from a stock-image-illustrated motivational poster, but when it comes to your wedding makeup, hold this mantra true to your heart. The biggest mistake brides make is going out of their comfort zone. Your makeup artist can do the most beautiful job—however, if you are not comfortable, it comes across in the photos, and you will end up hating it. If you are unsure about what look to try—perhaps your makeup artist is swaying you with photos of a retro-inspired cat-eye—always go with what you want and what makes you feel your best. It is your day and you deserve to call the shots on what makes you feel your best self.
GO FOR GLOW No bride wants to look through her wedding photos and zero in on her oil slick of a forehead, but make sure not to go the opposite route with a too-matte look, either. You want to look like your best self on your day, which means having flawless, glowing skin. It will make you look like you are glowing from within and radiating happiness. Hopefully, that is already the case because it is your wedding and all, but a little extra glow never hurt.
LONGEVITY IS KEY Picking a lip color for your big day can in some ways feel as monumental as picking your dress. Should you go bold and opt for a classic red? Will your go-to pink not be “special” enough? In the end, you can never go wrong with rose. It is universal because, essentially, it is the color of a just-bitten or kissed lip. However, do not oppose to a red lip on your wedding day, if that is the color your normally wear. My only advice is that if you have never worn red, today is not the day to start!
CONTOUR CAREFULLY If you are choosing to add some subtle sculpting to your wedding day look, opt for matte over any product with shimmer. Contour is a more defined version of your face, so opt for a matte shade, and keep it soft. There is nothing worse than a heavy, shimmery contour on a day where you are supposed to be flawlessly beautiful.

5 TIPS
FOR HOSTING AN
ECO-FRIENDLY WEDDING
80
TIP 1: FORAGE FLOWERS/GREENS Foraging for greens to supplement your bouquet and centerpieces is a great way to be sustainable as well as save money. Fields, abandoned lots, and sides of roads are great places to go foraging. Try not to take more than 25% of any particular plant. If you’re buying flowers, farmer’s markets and local flower farms are great places to start. Try to always use what’s local and in season.
TIP 2: CHOOSE RECYCLED PAPER OPTIONS Millions of trees are toppled every year to make paper products, and the process of producing these items pollutes the environment. Now more and more couples are trying to help by making eco-conscious invite choices. We do recommend old school snail mail for the wedding invitations, but for save-the-dates, paperless is becoming more and more common. You can also reduce the inserts in your invitations by directing people to your wedding websites for any extra details. For your invitation, keep an eye out for stationers who may offer recycled paper products and vegetable-based inks, like The Windmill Paper Boutique (they even source printing from windmill-powered printers). Some paper products are even plantable—yes, plantable! Paper from companies like Botantical Paper Works are embedded with seeds, so guests can plant them in their backyards and the paper turns into flowers, plants or herbs instead of ending up in a landfill.
TIP 3: HOST RECEPTION AT A GARDEN Choosing a venue helps set the stage and theme for any event and is usually your first major decision. One of the biggest ways to cut down on energy is to get married outdoors, like on a farm or vineyard, where the sun can provide all of your lighting. There are tons of beautiful botanical gardens, hilltops and refurbished barns that offer modern conveniences, like sinks and toilets, so that you don’t have to sacrifice on the hygiene portion of your wedding. We know outdoor ceremony and receptions don’t work for everyone. If you want to be indoors, there are several ways you can make it green. First, hold your ceremony and reception in one place—no one will have to travel to get from one event to the next, which cuts back on fuel emissions. Or choose a venue that gets plenty of sunlight and host a daytime wedding so you can leave the lights off. Another way to be green indoors: Look for hotels that recycle and use energy-efficient appliances and biodegradable products.
81
TIP 4: RE-WEAR A GOWN The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about eco-friendly dress shopping is re-wearing a gown, maybe even your mother’s. If you love the idea of wearing her dress, but aren’t totally in love with the dress itself, work with a seamstress to make it more your style. Or, if mom’s dress is out of the running, start from square one and pick out a gown that’s totally you. First stop: Check out vintage clothing shops or consignment boutiques. Nothing speaking to you? Check out all of the websites you can buy or rent pre-worn gowns. If you prefer to wear a brand-new dress, try to find a designer who uses sustainable fabrics (like organic cotton, silk or hemp), such as H&M’s eco-conscious wedding collection or Reformation.
TIP 4: ORDER LOCALLY SOURCED FOOD
TIP 5: LOOK FOR PLANTABLE FAVORS For an eco-frindly wedding, look for plantable favors like potted saplings, herbs or succulents. If a lot of your guests are traveling, keep in mind that they probably won’t want to pack a pot of soil into their suitcase, so consider biodegradable seed packets if you’re committed to the plant route. Or, go edible. Look to local businesses like coffee houses for a bag of their signature beans, candy shops for chocolate bars (easy on the paper wrapping) or jams in reusable glass jars from an orchard.

THEN WE SAID, “I DO” Your big day is about celebrating the love between you and your future spouse. Though there is another goal at hand: throwing one epic party that your guests will talk about for years to come. How do you make your big day stand out amongst the throngs of weddings your guests have attended in the past? While there are many ways to exceed the standards, we made a list of ways you can get the party started right. Think about the wedding experience as a whole. Your nearest and dearest are here to watch you marr y your longtime love, but sitting for an hour long ceremony is not their idea of a celebration. Remember that many of your guests have traveled to spend time with you, not watching you, so ensure your being interactive throughout the evening. This way your family and friends will feel like an impor tant par t of the proceedings.

HAVE A PHOTO BOOTH Not only is a photo booth a fun activity for your reception, it is also a great alternative for your guestbook or favor. The options are literally endless, but we love a great selection of props for your buddies to play with.
SKIP TRADITIONS Some brid es do not want to toss the bouquet or the garter, while others would prefer not to wait until the ceremony for their first look. If you are a girl who just can not image partaking in one of these traditions, do not do it! It is your wedding; you can skip what you want to.
MAKE A MEMORABLE EXIT No one wants your wedding night to end, but since it has to, go out on a high note. Do a fun and festive farewell, like a firework show, sparkler exit, or confetti send-off! Your guests will love it, and it will make for some amazing photos. Try changing into a blood red Monique Lhuillier dress post-ceremony. The more traditional ball gown shape is still elegant, but the color is so unexpected.
SERVE LATE NIGHT SNACKS Yes, you are serving dinner and dessert, but those are typically devoured hours before the reception actually ends and with couples extending their parties later and later, it is likely that more than just a few of your guests will be thinking of a tasty late night snack. Have your caterer bring out hand-held options like sliders and fries, mini grilled cheese, or coffee and donuts about an hour before the reception ends to revive revelers.
GIVE A FAVOR PEOPLE WILL USE Trust us, people do not want a framed photo of you and your new husband. If you are going to spend the money on favors, select something that your guests will not leave on the table. Mini bottles of bubbly, a yummy snack like cookies or popcorn, or a treat they can enjoy once back at home.

TRUE YOU
If you are a silly person, I am here to tell you that it is okay if your vows are a little silly, or funny. If you would rather just write one simple line, DO IT. Your vows do not even have to sound like vows; you could write an essay, a sonnet, or a smooth love jam. Vows should sound like you, especially when you are making promises to your partner. Of all days, you would not want them to sound like someone else.

THE WEDDING SUSTAINABLE WEDDING MEALS
SUSTAINABLE
WEDDING MEALS The organic wedding caterer is not hard to find these days, so have fun with the choices. Remember going local and keeping it seasonal means less travel time for the food, which means you’re being as green as green can possibly be. Food is the center of any celebration, and going green does not mean you have to sacrifice taste! The farm-to-table movement is in full swing, meaning it’s more accessible than ever to source healthy, earth-friendly food. When you’re budgeting, keep in mind that organic foods may cost more, but asking your caterer to source from in-season, locally-grown products will help keep the cost down and guarantee the freshest finds. When bought directly from growers, food needs less time in the fridge and less packaging to stay fresh, so you’re being especially kind to Mother Earth, too. And since the food is coming from a shorter distance, less fuel is needed to transport it. Really want to impress your guests? Supplement your table decor with herb plants in terra cotta pots, like basil or cilantro, that guests can add straight to their dishes.
