Royse Contemporary is excited to present "at home", featuring the much anticipated solo exhibition of Cam DeCaussin. Presenting masterful artwork that emphasizes the beauty of the Arizona sky, midcentury architecture and the desert. Accentuating the artist's use of imagery, engaging style, and a strong voice that truly connects with his viewers," states Curator, Nicole Royse. One of the biggest changes to the artist's work comes from becoming a parent, in regard to painting time and efficiency which has become even more important. With this new work we see changes in his themes, incorporating the struggles, worries, and questions of parenthood.

"During Covid-19, there were several articles that came out about how we were all living in an Edward Hopper painting, and I have always related to Hopper's work, the quiet solitude, and isolation, states DeCaussin. "While we all were left at home, I could not find the energy or interest to paint, especially what I had always loved to, there was a heightened awareness of the mundane,” explains the artist. “Cam has a very specific voice that comes through in his art, there is a little bit of sadness, a lot of mystery and even a bit of cheekiness. And in these times of Covid-19, it is the epitome of how we’re all feeling, explains Royse.

“Like snapshots of brief moments frozen in time, DeCaussin’s paintings explore

the blurred lines between public and

private, envisioning intimate moments of everyday life. Using photographs that he took for inspiration for the settings, the artist complies and edits home and landscape details to create realistic scenes, writes Editor Rebecca Rhodes." “People are drawn to the stories that DeCaussin tells, he flirts with being a voyeur and invites you into this work he has created. You can see yourself in his work,” states Curator Nicole Royse.

Formally trained in the arts receiving his Bachelors of Fine Art in Illustration from Grand Valley State University and Masters of Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from Arizona State University. His work has been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions including: AZ Biennial Tucson Museum of Art, New City Studios, Fine Art Complex 1101, Chandler Center for the Arts Gallery, Manifest Gallery, Harry Wood Gallery, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, Shemer Art Center, Renmin University. DeCaussin currently resides in Phoenix and is a Professor of Drawing and Painting at Arizona State University.

Cam DeCaussin is a highly skilled oil painter with a keen eye for detail and an incredible ability to capture the energy and mystery within his subjects. His work is inspired by empty, quiet living spaces and their ability to express themes of solace, sadness, separation and contemplation, influenced by the work of painter Edward Hopper, photographer Gregory Crewdson and filmmaker David Lynch.
