Pirarucu Pirarucu (Arapaima, Pirarucu, or Paiche (Arapaima Gigas) is an ancient, airbreathing, Giant Amazonian fish. One of the largest freshwater fishes in the world, the Pirarucu attains a length of nearly 3 metres (10 feet) and a weight of 220 kg (485 pounds). The Pirarucu is a fish belonging to a primitive group of carnivorous bony-tongued fishes, the Osteoglossidae, that crush their prey with a large tongue studded with teeth. The primary use of Pirarucu is for eating by the local Amazonian people, so using it as an exotic skin breathes new life into fish skins that are usually discarded by the seafood industry. 100% of our Pirarucu skins are by-products of the food industry. The label of e-fabrics® or Bio-Leather defines the use of the following sustainable materials: organic and natural cotton, recycled cotton and PET, “Pirarucu Leather” eco-jute, organic silk. The problem with this fish is that its skin can be harmful for the environment causing biological pollution when disposed of the landfill. Here using the skin as a textile is very beneficial for the environment and the local population creating jobs opportunities.
