The Transhuman Course Project Statement Prepared by:
The Transhuman Course is physically defined by six repeating bays measuring 20 feet, by 40 feet, by 60 feet, each rotated 30 degrees respectively.
Nicole Winkler
Conceptually, the course aims to breach technological and psychological goals in terms of the 6th sense, specifically, transtemporal consciousness. This kind of consciousness is simulated in the course in “gray areas”, where the space between “white and black” (Past and Future) are thinnest. This happens through a dynamic sequence of linear tubes, all with diameters of 7 feet. In each tube, from the first to the third, a democracy is split in half, over again, until there are six separate users in separate tubes. Upon each separation, the new user group is funneled into a dramatic catwalk, each becoming more physically and mentally exhausting and exaggerated. By the fourth separation, all users are separate and the transtemporal experience begins.
Upon reaching the entrance to the course, all users (6) within one group board a lifeboat. The boat ride serves as a literal formation of a democracy among
users, this is done incase all six users do not already know each other. Once the boat reaches the dock of the course, all users are led to the entrance of the ride. The first tube of the experience has a diameter of 28 feet, and holds all six users. The second bay houses two tubes, both of which have a diameter of 14 feet,

holding three users in each. At the third bay, users are broken off into singular tubes measuring 7 feet in diameter.
While all users circulate to the fourth bay, they are reminded of their bonding boat ride, while sound, light and reflective materiality disguise the path of
egress. They are also reminded of the previous spaces they have been in, and in this way, the transtemporal consciousness is stimulated. Memories of the past and the inevitable future become visual guides, and third-reich period music supports the breaking down of a democracy.
Questions such as “Where is everyone else?” and “How long have I been here alone?” will be challenged, and users will ideally begin to experience
introspective conflict; questioning reality, time and space and one’s own purpose and perception.

Hitchcock uses sadistic humor and humiliation in virtually every one of his films.
The Trans-Human Hitchcock Theme Park Area 51, Rachel, Nevada

With fear, there is always a comic form of coping, and in the case of Lifeboat, where there are so many devastating moments in a very unfortunate circumstance, there are a myriad of humorous diversions and distractions.
losing your class - people who are at a lower social/political level become equal - an equalizer loss of democracy - loss of humanity - imposed sacrifices - related political social issues to impose one’s will - facist - reverse of democracy - this is human nature - short circuiting discussing and imposing a decision on a community. democracy takes more work - must be willing to listen to the other side and compromise.

Each character in Lifeboat is given a very stereotypical character profile as soon as they appear on screen. The following misadventures of each characature is coupled with a personal comic as well as a general joke within the entire cast, ironically juxtaposing the time period and the issue at hand.

Loss of Democracy
Captain of the German U-Boat. Willi plays an important role as the only German Nazi on the lifeboat, trusted as a knowledgeable seaman and experienced surgeon. Willi represents a fascist character, which poses a juxtaposition to the democratic Americans on the lifeboat.
German survivor from second U-Boat After having been saved by the survivors on the lifeboat, he is astounded by the acts of the survivors and asks “aren’t you going to kill me?” This new fascist character is a reminder of anti-Nazi propaganda and totalitarianism.
Gus Schmidt / Smith
Joe Spencer
German/American who suffers from gangrene - amputee as a result, surgery performed by German captain of U-Boat.
The only black character on the lifeboat.
Gus suffers from dehydration and is forced off the lifeboat by the German captain in the middle of the night, a representation of German fascism.
Fear of losing democracy We watch the American survivors on the lifeboat as they emotionally and mentally navigate through very difficult decisions in the midst of being under great pressure to survive for an unknown amount of time in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The majority of the characters agree to be democratic about all decision making and leadership while on board, and this is juxtaposed by the inherent fascist behavior of the Nazi character aboard the boat. Where we see Willi make irrational decisions without considering the majority, the rest of the crew takes a vote for each new action. It is even stated in the film that by perhaps being democratic while aboard could inspire the Nazi to “covert”.
When a vote is brought up to decide who of the survivors should be put in charge of navigation, he is given an opportunity to vote, and ironically, for the time, turns it down.

Fear of Loss of Democracy Theme Sequence
Prepared by:
The sequence of spaces represent a “Story” where a democracy is split through moments in the system of time. In each moment, the democracy is split further, until the final split, where each member of the democracy is alone, experiencing a moment on their own. At this point in the “Story”, the members have transtemporal experiences, which will happen by way of lighting, reflective materiality and pathways. The end of the ride will be an abrupt ending, to represent a Hitchcock theme of ending stories ironically to provide comedic relief to flip a situation on itself.

Phenomenology of The Story
The purpose of this film was to begin to combine the fears from Lifeboat with the research of phenomenology and the 6th sense. The use of Third Reich-period music adds fascist implications from the film, and provides the auditory stage for the transtemporal experience. At the climax of O’ Fortuna, the experience of the ride also reaches its climax, which is the transtemporal experience: seeing, hearing, reexperiencing what has recently been experienced, and inevitably, what is about to be experienced. Past and Future moments collide into a Current moment, to create a suspensful, otherworldly, Hitchcockian experience. Part of the Hitchcockian experience is also seen in the ironic ending, where the end of the ride serves as a sarcastic book end to a very complicated Story; a sudden halt and realization that all that has been “scary” and full of doubt throughout the ride turns out to have been a construct of innate human fears and expectations.

Current Moment
Current moments are labelled in gray, and may only be experienced once, during their respective time frames in the provided sequence of moments.
Future moments can be perceived if the experiencer is capable of utilizing their natural sixth sense. Therefore, future moments are noticeable by the color white, and will represent bench marks on the ride.
Future Moment When the past and future moments begin to overlap through the sequence of spaces of the ride, the current moment becomes a transtemporal experience and the program will be arranged as such. The organization of the program relies on the circulation of the Ride.
