Scale of opportunity in decommissioning
Talent pool and skills base
Around 470 installations, 10,000km of pipelines, 15 onshore terminals and 5,000 wells will eventually have to be decommissioned. The forecast for the total cost of decommissioning for existing and sanctioned infrastructure is set at £28.7 billion from 2012 onwards. Within Fife, Inverkeithing is already recognised as a centre for maritime decommissioning.

Graduates, training and skills development Building, improving and retaining a quality workforce is a well documented challenge across the Oil & Gas industry. Fife Council works closely and continuously with education providers, government agencies, and with industry to ensure our local employers can find new, skilled recruits and enhance the capabilities of existing staff through appropriate education and training. Graduates and school leavers Engineering is the No.1 choice for male school leavers in Fife. Of those going on to a degree qualification, 9% of school leavers choose Engineering, 15% choose Science or Mathematics.

Oceaneering Umbilical Solutions, Rosyth Oceaneering Umbilical Solutions’ advanced technical engineering and manufacturing facilities at its UK base in Fife have reinforced its reputation as a global supplier of deepwater applications to the offshore Oil & Gas industry. In 2012 Oceaneering invested £15m at Rosyth to increase the capacity of its materials handling and storage facility, allowing the company to manufacture and assemble larger and more complex umbilicals. This investment has created one of the most advanced plants of its type in the subsea industry, enabling the company to better meet current and future customer requirements from global heavyweights within the Oil & Gas sector. The company continues to invest in its Rosyth facility, with several process equipment upgrades being implemented throughout 2013.

The Waterfront area falls under 3 key land ownerships – Babcock Group, Forth Ports PLC and Scarborough Muir. Babcock operates the former naval base at Rosyth, which covers 119 ha.
