Gender roles in family: 1950 & 2000 Gender roles is a set of behaviors that are socially correct or appropriate that indicates ones gender specific. The image projected by a person that indicates their femaleness or maleness and their gender identity.
This gender roles are not universal. Gender role is highly connected with society, culture and also the time. That’s why we can find a lot of differences on for example the role of mother on a christian family and on a muslim family , or also the stereotype of the perfect women on the american culture with the asian culture . Gender role theory: a theory concerned on the way by the society influence and the process of creating norms ,values ,belives, and behaviors to a group. Trying to teach how to behave as a male or female. When we talk about gender role´s the world stereotype would appear this is a though that can be adapted to a specific group of people or a certain way of doing something. But we also conect this word with the perfect way that you should do something or the perfect person that you would try to be.
On the 50´s the 50´s is nowadays considered a very sexist social structure Female role in the family They were more submissive. They were expected to stay home, cook, clean and watch the children. Their highest option of education was only finishing school and also in the schools they have different subjects from men’s like manners or cooking, etc. They were a support for the men. Although they have some education the highest aspiration of women was to marry.
Male role in the family They were considered the “Alphas”, “the man of the house”. They made the vital decisions of the house and command it. They were the ones that went to college and study and also work to provide with money his family. Seen as the strongest of the family Took care of the whole family
Things had changed and now the women earned rights that promoted equality and justice. women can decide the course of their life .Now they have higher aspirations , not only to marry some rich boy, college is not only available for women but also its promoted . Years passed and now things have changed a lot of the idea of the role in the family
On the 00´s & the 2000 Female role in the family Women can work Women have more power on what happens on the house They can study Women have won rights and equality
Male role in the family
today’s men´s are less “masculine” men cook for the family also men can stay at home and clean they are more nurturing and caring men have less power over women
But still women get 23% less money than men’s although they have worked the same among of hours with the same intensity Conclusion: Although society is still male chauvinist and there are still movements that are trying to find the balance between these two genders so we will make a society that accepts and reward the weaknesses and virtues of men and women. Also there are things that society still found more natural of women and men in duties of the house, for example: men are more connected to “bush cut “or take the garbage to the street, repair things and also do things that you need more physical strength. And women also are more connected to clean the dishes, clean the house, and also cook; but this doesn’t mean that these duties can’t be done by the other sex. Also society had changed and now the idea of the nuclear family with mom, dad, and some children is not the only idea of a family. Nowadays although you find the majority of heterosexual couples you can also find step parents, single parents, gay couples and also interracial couples now that all living their lives as families. More open minded an ambitious young people are on the head of the world and people keep fighting for rights and a better future.
Many thins have improved for better , gender roles are more open minded families have come more diverse and social life is adapting to this way of life .
Just think how the world would change in the next 60 years ;)
