WELCOME DIGITAL THEATRE FESTIVAL AUGUST 2020

I would like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the many lands on which we perform and present these projects. Here at NIDA, in Kensington NSW, we learn and tell stories on Bidjigal and Gadigal land and pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past, present and emerging. I am very excited to welcome you to NIDA’s Digital Theatre Festival. Neither streamed theatre, nor film, this festival is unlike any other: the six projects have been created entirely from the ground up, specifically for audiences in the digital space, resulting in uniquely immersive, interactive and unusual experiences. Collaborating with an exciting line up of directors, NIDA’s actors, designers, stage managers, theatre technicians, costumiers, props-makers and scenery-makers – among some of Australia’s brightest young imaginations – have applied incredible innovation and out-of-thebox thinking at every moment to create six rich and complex shows. They have bravely pushed the boundaries of storytelling and learnt to make the most of the whole gamut of online platforms to engage audiences. Along the way, they have further developed their creative and agile thinking; attributes that I know our industry will be hungry for once they graduate from NIDA. Thank you for joining us on this ambitious journey. Together we might just be witnessing the invention of another future for the performing arts. I would like to thank David Berthold, NIDA’s Director Centre for Creative Practices and Curator of the Digital Theatre Festival, for all his work and creative inspiration. To finish, allow me to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank all our sponsors and donors, as well as the Australian Government via the Office for the Arts, Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, for their continuing support of NIDA and excellence in performing arts education. Happy Digital Theatre Festival to all!

2020 has been an extraordinary year in the truest sense of the word. Just as the smoke cleared from the summer firestorms, we found ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic and ‘lockdown’. The word ‘unprecedented’ fell into common usage, as lives were put on hold and our health, well-being and economy were no longer a given. A Pox on Both Your Houses is a theatre work forged from these circumstances. It has been made remotely via Zoom and is now presented on Zoom. Actors turn their bedrooms into theatre spaces, live dialogue is performed remotely while technicians run and call the show in real time over the internet. The work itself also responds to the experience of COVID-19 by focusing on the theme of enforced separation. It presents three short tales of lovers who are separated by different circumstances such as pandemics, wars and family feuds. My student team of actors, designers and technicians have met the challenges this work and circumstance demand with creativity and resilience. We hope you enjoy our unique theatrical offering.
