WELCOME DIGITAL THEATRE FESTIVAL AUGUST 2020
I would like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the many lands on which we perform and present these projects. Here at NIDA, in Kensington NSW, we learn and tell stories on Bidjigal and Gadigal land and pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past, present and emerging. I am very excited to welcome you to NIDA’s Digital Theatre Festival. Neither streamed theatre, nor film, this festival is unlike any other: the six projects have been created entirely from the ground up, specifically for audiences in the digital space, resulting in uniquely immersive, interactive and unusual experiences. Collaborating with an exciting line up of directors, NIDA’s actors, designers, stage managers, theatre technicians, costumiers, props-makers and scenery-makers – among some of Australia’s brightest young imaginations – have applied incredible innovation and out-of-thebox thinking at every moment to create six rich and complex shows. They have bravely pushed the boundaries of storytelling and learnt to make the most of the whole gamut of online platforms to engage audiences. Along the way, they have further developed their creative and agile thinking; attributes that I know our industry will be hungry for once they graduate from NIDA. Thank you for joining us on this ambitious journey. Together we might just be witnessing the invention of another future for the performing arts. I would like to thank David Berthold, NIDA’s Director Centre for Creative Practices and Curator of the Digital Theatre Festival, for all his work and creative inspiration. To finish, allow me to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank all our sponsors and donors, as well as the Australian Government via the Office for the Arts, Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, for their continuing support of NIDA and excellence in performing arts education. Happy Digital Theatre Festival to all!

Written by MFA (Writing for Performance) students: Sophie Davis, Aiden Ossovani, Leah Tolmosoff and Bradley Ward Directed by Leticia Cáceres 5, 6 August, 9.30pm AEST 7 August, 11pm AEST 8 August, 7pm AEST 9 August, 1pm AEST Indicative running time 60 minutes Six started with three key objectives: to explore the genre of horror using a digital platform, to devise a narrative-based experience online that responded to restrictions imposed by COVID-19, and to subvert the more predictable tropes of horror and elevate them in order to comment on current socio-political concerns. We took inspiration from the story of how Mary Shelley came to write one of the most important horror novels of all time: Frankenstein. Shelley wrote Frankenstein in 1816, during the ‘summer of no light’; a catastrophic, climatic event that caused seasonal temperatures to drop well below average, resulting in mass devastation of crops which led to starvation across the Northern Hemisphere. To escape the dreary conditions of this summer, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, and various other high society friends bunkered down in a mansion on Lake Geneva. To entertain themselves they told ghost stories and discussed scientific advancements. A competition was set among the guests to write a ghost story of their own, and from this, Frankenstein was born. Fast forward to 2020. Similarly to Shelley, we have also been trying to make sense of some deeply distressing climatic events, most notably, the bushfires of 2019–20 which left us reeling. The grief of this event was then compounded by a global pandemic that again revealed the best and worst of us as a species. And then the lynching of George Floyd was broadcast to the world, and it left all of us breathless. In response to these global events, Six was made. It has been long documented that gothic horror is a manifestation of an injustice which has been denied. It is believed that spectres are pregnant with a hurt and they come to call on us in order to rectify their suffering. The question is, will we? – Leticia Cáceres, Director
