LIEGE: UPLIFTED The project is situated in Liège, an old industrial city that, after decades of decay and decline, is going through a severe development and is re-sending itself. Due to the specific history of the city, the architecture of Liège consists of a diverse mix of styles, where architecturally there is no obvious set of answers. As a result of the situation, a clear architectural statement is chosen to provide a meaning to the design of the city. The Quay of the Meuse in Liège houses La Batte, the largest Sunday market in the Benelux. Every weekend the Quay is made car-free and the main road and its adjacent spaces change into a gigantic marketplace. The three-kilometer-long market bases all the times and styles that are present in the city, from early Maasland Renaissance to local post-modern variations.

The sport hall has been lifted off the ground so it won’t damage the existing structure and also to make room for a public domain where the market can take place on Sundays. The sports program is in the volume above it. The volume also accommodates passing pedestrians. The design focuses on the contextual properties of the plot, namely: the two historic buildings, the urban structure and the historic past of the quay. Because of the positioning of the building, above the entrance to the parking deck, the two historic buildings "La Maison Harvart" and the meat hall remain visible from the quay. The history proves that the various vehicles have dominated the quay and the plot over long period of time. The design addresses the situation and reassign the street and the view to the pedestrian.
The facade is related to the open floor plan. The structural trusses ensure the stability of the building and also form a relationship with the historic building "La Maison Harvart", which also shows a structural wooden truss.

The plot of the building is located on the central and open site at the Quai Sur Meuse. It is at the center point of a busy intersection of various traffic connections (streets, motorway, bridge and pedestrian paths). The trajectory of the design was to address the hectic situation and resolve by introducing order and boundaries.

LIEGE: THE BEACON The building is positioned in such a way that there is a separation between hectic and tranquil. The separation isolates the busy motorway creating a safe and quiet square on other side. The primary function of the building the sport hall is located on the side of the square, which also functions as a market on Sundays. The façade parts of the sports hall will be during Sunday market opened and the building acts as open street. In addition to the public domain the building is added with external staircases leading the public to the rooftop, where the public basketball court is located and the opportunity is presented to have a gorgeous sight on the far-reaching views of the Maas and Sundays market. The open façade on the ground floor reveals the activities that take place in the building. The large panoramic window on the first floor provides light to the sport court, but also functions as a beacon that is visible from the other side of the Maas. The wall that separates the road and the square is envisioned in concrete, just like the plants of Liège residential buildings and as a sign of massive and rough protection against the busy road. The facade facing the square is made of wooden planks, a material that refers to historic buildings located on the old square before it was demolished to make room for the current parking spaces.

MISSION
EXPERIENCE
The future residence of the villa has a significant affection for nature. They like to be involved and exposed to nature. Nevertheless, they don’t want to compromise the exposition with their privacy.
Each family member is provided with the opportunity to manipulate their space, in terms of privacy and the interfere with nature. They have all the freedom to choose from being totally transparent to semi-transparent or even to be excluded.
The main mission was to develop a villa that has a strong connection with the nature that focuses on the social aspect of the family and yet can remain private from everyone els.
This is possible due to the mechanical facade of the building. The wooden framework can be manipulated, by raising them up or down to create a different experience with the environment.
ORIGINAL The original state provides comfort and protection from the harsh environment.
VISIBILITY The block is opened with glass facade achieving the visible connection between the users and the forest.
COMFORT The second step allows the users to abandon the man-made comfort and engage directly with nature.

CONCEPT The broad spectrum of contemporary art is provided by the 8th art institutions in Rotterdam that are facilitated in the cultural center as one entity. These art institutions have some alignment, in term of their spatial use, trajectory and the programming. These interferences are seen as an advantaged point, to create a spatial layout where the institutions merge in in each other’s spatial layout providing an experiential journey with diverse exposition but yet in a flowing transition. The concept of “Giant Stride” is based on the route and the engagement you get in the Cultural Center. The continuous interaction with the flexible floor and the exhibitions.
20
The slightly tilted exhibition floor emphasizes the achievement progress. Each step that you take through the cultural center resembles the educational factor in physical form. In fact, the young visitors are climbing the path of knowledge. The slope leads towards the highest point wich represents a moment of revelation, a viewpoint of the full experience of the cultural center. The small steps that heave led to the destination point are suddenly justified as a “Giant Stride”.

MISSION The Westewagenstraat in Rotterdam is located in the central district of the city, among the most visited areas of Rotterdam. Even though the street is located in a prime location of the city center, the street doesn’t function optimally. The street has several obstacles making it visually unattractive and uninteresting to the public audience.
WES TEWA GENS TRAA T

AA T
The main mission was to rehabilitate the street and unite it with the central district. Also to provide it with a new program that fits the location, the vision of the municipality, and also effects the visitors of Rotterdam.
NEW CITY PARK
CONTEXT
These municipality goals are visible in the present day with the current projects such as “City Park” in front of the Laurenskerk; refurbishment of the Binnerotte and the refurbishment of the Coolsingel. The municipality vision for the Laurenskwartier is focussed on the development of the city into a vital quality space, where the visitors can meet each other, relax and get amused. In essence, the space should contribute to the quality of living in Rotterdam.

HO OG ST R
The municipality has a great vision for Rotterdam district Laurenskwartier. They aim to create Laurenskwartier as the new “City lounge” area. Transforming the public space into higher and much precious green areas, for the public audience with social driven programs.
CONCEPT The concept “Upgrade by downgrade” is focused on the vision of Rotterdam, increasing quality environment for the City and the citizens. Rehabilitate the city and reintroducing the wildlife that has been renounced during the urbanization of the city. At first, the site will be downgraded to create more space for the public domain. The small vacant buildings on the site will be demolished, preserving only the post-war monumental buildings. It will open up the streets, enhance the viewpoints and introduces new sights and interactions with the location.
REALIZATION To upgrade the site, the future city park is stretched out till the Westewagenstraat that is connected with a bridge. The upgrade for the city is based in the reintroduction of the disappearing bees that throughout the years enlarged our diversity in food chains. The bees are responsible for pollinating over 80% of the plants and flowers. Due to the pollination effect, a polyculture and biodiversity arise. Provide the city and the citizens with rich flora and healthy environment and public spaces. The disappearing of the bees finds its origins in our space manipulation. Throughout the development of the city, we have withdrawn the bee’s food sources by overusing the pesticides and a livable space due to urbanization of the city. The combination of these aspects withdraws the bees from the city.
To promote the need for bees and their positive effect on our environment, a pavilion is developed. The pavilion connects the new developed side and city park. The pavilion has several functions: firstly to provoke the interest of the visitors. Secondly, act as a functional beehive to educate the visitors on the need of bees and the effect they have on us. Within the pavilion, you can safely interact with the bees. For example seeing how the beehive functions within behind a glass vitrine. On the facade, you will find educational billboards located. This pavilion is connected with two shops, “the bees’ knees” and “its Rotterdam honey”. Within those two shops, you can buy products manufactured with the help of the bees. Products as honey, candles, and starting set for beekeepers to promote the bees environmental habitat.

VILLA WANINGEN On the edge of the Nassauhavenpark in Rotterdam Feijenoord stands an isolated and abandoned building. A building that is on virtue of being demolished. However the building has deep roots in the past. The building used to house the office of the Van Woningen cement and ferroconcrete factory and was a part of a large industrial complex. In the present time the factory has been demolished and the villa is left with three blind facades and joyful reminder of the past inherent in the front facade. A system of expressive elements that is arranged in a classical neorenaissance building.
26
Through out the study the focus point of the studio was set on the experimental use of concrete and moulds. The project reflect the systems that has been used in the Villas front facade and adapted with the interpretation of the experimental conclusion.
Year: Workingfield: Collaboration:
2018 winter - spring Msc. Design studio at RAVB Tutor: Jan Nauta
As the front facade focusses on the street, we urged the idea of reactivating the back facade as the front for the Nassauhavenpark. The position of Das Tor is exactly at the middle point of the intersection of the crossroads in the park. Creating a visible accent from each direction of the park. Marking a central place where the visitors can meet.

HAK VAN WEEBER At the foot of the iconic Erasmusbrug and on the apposite side of the Hoge Heren, is a small tower by the name “De hak van Weeber “is realized at one of the busiest street intersections of Rotterdam. The building is designed by Rotterdams architect Carl Weeber in the 1980’s . As most of Weeber’s projects the building was build for the social housing in Rotterdam. It has a humble appearance due to cheap exterior cladding (trespa plates), no public programming and the feeling of being isolated and misfit on the site and context. Even though the building is placed on prominent site the building is unseen by the daily travelers and the citizens of Rotterdam, like the building doesn’t exist. The trajectory of the studio was set to design the facade of the building. Rejuvenate the building, attach it to the site and make it relevant to the contextual aspect of the location. To determine the rejuvenate plan the building was firstly analyzed by the classical tower subdivisions: The plint, The base and the Crown. Each division was analyzed with different approach in order to understand and create the possibility for the rejuvenation of the building.
28
The concept of The Hak van Weeber was based on the common Dutch social flats. Weeber pinched the two sides together, morphed the building into the U shape. This approach resolved in maximal use of the plot with maximal view on the street side and minimal traveling distance on the gallery side. The building was designed with round shape, but due to the budged cuts the building was realized in an octagon shape.
Year: Workingfield: Collaboration:
2018 spring - summer Msc. Design studio at RAVB Tutor: Krijn Geevers
As a part of the rejuvenation plan my approach was to introduce additional angles, that act as balconies for the apartments. In additional the balconies morph the whole building creating a dynamic view, when the observer passes the building. The building becomes a spectacle revealing each side by rotating around it.

Facade Gradient
ANALYSE The scope of the study was to appropriate the tectonic culture of facade. Firstly by analyzing historical examples as the residence Victor Hugo by Fernand Pouillon. Replicating the facade with the hand drawn technique to understand the autonomy and the structure of the building.
DESIGN Second part of the studio was to design a facade with primarily wooden materiaal. The facade takes deliberate approach by dividing the facade in several levels creating a much readable composition of diverse stacked layers. The levels are intertwined with each other by gradient of wooden planks.

In association with the Vevs interieur architect a plan was developed to transform the former office of DTI group and rejuvenate the corporation’s identity. In 2017 the DTI group submerged three business with the ambition to cooperate under the same roof. The former office didn’t meet all the requirements for the contemporary use. The studio proposed to demolish the old entrance, creating space for new construction. The new added mass of the building represent the current ambition of the corporation. The approach of architecture and interior was to interweave the inside and outside so eloquently that the new construction exposes a coherent
34
theme. The design was not made from inside to outside rather it looked for a dialogue between both contrast. Within this project my main goals was to deliver the ambition that was set by the architect and the interior architect, with in mind the technical aspect of a refurbishing a building and the time span of the engineers and contractor. Monthly I organized the meeting points with the management team, compiled technical drawings and had continuously supervision of the advance of the building process.

PARC DE WITTE VENNEN
For the expansion of the Parc de Witte Vennen in Oostrum, Platform Allround in collaboration with Jeroen Dingenmans were asked to design a set of recreational houses to accompany the all ready-made recreational park. The existing bungalows were designed in brick facade, square floor plan with unclear route and an introverted program. The relation with the beautiful and diverse site was totally forgotten and unused. Our proposal was to introduce new typologies of recreational houses and adapt the houses with the nature. Therefore, all houses were created with their own characteristics for the specific location on the site. We introduced Beach lodge, Water villa, Forest villa and Court villa.
38
My personal contribution for this project involved the whole process from initial design to the establishment of the demo villas on the site. I had participated in all the discussions with the client involved the design of recreational houses and the regulations of the site plan. I have worked on preliminary design, ascertained the fulfillment of dutch regulations and completed all the required documents for the planning application at the municipality.
