SEP-DEC 2019 | UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN POP-UP STUDIO | ANNA PALARES This Pop-Up Studio was tasked with designing a temporary intervention that would breathe new life into Ann Arbor’s performing arts hub, The Power Center. The project designed originally by Architect Kevin Roche uses a precedent in his later work as a vehicle for Powerbuildings Center the modification. Delamination identifiies the lobby space as an opportunity for establishing a closer connection between the theater and the park, transforming a previously underutalized waiting area into a cultural hub for the city. The curtain wall previously delineating a hard boundry line is deconstructed, partitioninig the 3 story lobby into an urban park with a more effective expression of the threshold.

MAGMA LAMP 2019 | UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN FABRICATION | MARK MEIER The course brief directed us to design and fabricate an object that would fit into a set of 3 15”x15”x15” cubes. We brainstormed the idea and worked through almost a dozen iterations before landing on a design which leveraged 3D printing, Laser cutting/ etching, CnC Milling, and a handful of other machining techniques which allowed us to achieve a near seamless appearance.

Design in the Square is a spatial prototyping tool for the public that draws inspiration from 2016’s Seattle Design Festival project: Map the Square, a project that challenged the public to take to the streets of Pioneer Square and physically tag areas they felt deserved a public intervention.

As a part of the design team working on a Washington State Middle School, I was tasked with developing design iterations for an interior acoustic wall that would devide a learning commons space from the school’s library. I created a script in Grasshopper that would allow me to test out various itterations on a stacking concept while TYP closely monitoring the % of accoustic material to13Glass, the sizes of panels (relative to a 4x8’ sheet of material) A5.51 and the visability of the underlying structure. This allowed the design to adhere to an optimized material size while covering the 50% of surface area necessary for proper acoustic absorption within a screen like design.

REPRESENTATION 2019 | UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
MODULE I | PERRY KULPER STAGE(D) FRIGHT: MOBY DIPTYCH Module I briefed the student with a somewhat unconventional assignment, to produce a series of drawings based upon a non programatic form of drawing construction. Briefs included taglines such as ’Ground Preparation’ and challenged students to get behind the historical, discursive, and operational scenes of representation types. “Moby Tryptich” is an exploration of computational generation in drawing cosntruction. I was primarly interested with adapting the brief to adress a narrative of linear v. computational drawing construction.
MODULE II | JULIA MCMOROUGH EXERCISES IN STYLE In the second studio module the class was asked to produce a series of drawings based on the merging of a collection of famous architectural works. The assignment began with a group collage limited to only linework. From there each student was given a set of styles to emulate according to their descretion; A Collage style and a Precisionist style drawing. The module culminated in the creation of an instructional pamphlet that illustrated one technique used in the creation of the drawings.

STEEL TUBE CHAIR COLD ROLLED 1/16” STEEL FRAME LAMINATED WALNUT BACK
Inspired by Danish furniture master Arne Jacobsen, the Rail Chair seeks to build off of the dimensional qualities of “The Chair” and combine them with the experimental steel tube bending explorations of early-mid 20th centurty designers. The steel frame is constructed of 6 separate lengths of tubing, hand bent, welded, and sanded to hide any seams. The back is made of vacuum laminated walnut veneers.
