We are working hard to reduce the environmental impact of the products we make, and part of this work has included a major shift towards the use of Environmentally Preferred Materials (EPMs) in our products. In the 2010 product line, over 67% of the mass of the materials in our products are made of EPMs. As part of this effort, GoLite has replaced virgin, petro-chemical based materials in all of our main pack fabrics and travel luggage with 50% Tier 1 recycled nylon, and in all of our sleeping bag collections and some apparel with 100% Tier 1 recycled polyester. The impact reduction for recycled textiles varies, but it has shown to have up to 70% (for nylon) and up to 80% (for polyester) reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while performing on-par with their conventional alternatives. Backpacker Magazine awarded GoLite the 2010 Editor’s Choice Green Award for our extensive use of Tier 1 recycled fabrics.

The GoLite Index™ The GoLite Index™ is a tool we created to help us drive our products to the most sustainable versions we can make. It is a product-level scorecard that addresses every product’s key social and environmental impacts, helping us make better decisions that drive our products to the most sustainable versions we can produce while helping our customers make better purchasing decisions. 2009 Sustainability Report In early 2010 we issued our first Sustainability Report – a ground-breaking and comprehensive look at our company’s footprint that fulfills the A+ standards set by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), arguably the world’s most credible and trusted framework for corporate responsibility reporting. The report focuses both on the company’s environmental practices and impact including product responsibility, waste minimization, and climate impact, as well as its social impacts including labor policies, global human rights and community involvement. Take-Back Program In early 2010, we launched our “I’m Not Trash” Product Take-Back Program, the first of its kind in the outdoor industry. The program aims to enable consumers to avoid ever sending their used or unwanted GoLite products to a landfill when there are so many positive options for giving their products a second life. By visiting www.golite.com, customers can learn more about how to repair or repurpose their GoLite product locally, but if they decide to send it back to GoLite, we will repair, donate, repurpose, recycle, and/or store for future recycling everything we get back, lock, stock and zipper pull, regardless of its condition.*

DriMove™ Baselayers The baselayer is where it all begins—a second skin, the most important go-to piece for any outdoor athlete. Minerale™ by Cocona® vastly increases the amount of pores in its fabrics, giving moisture a lot more room to spread out and drying out faster than any other baselayer material on the market. Zonal construction means warmth where you need it and breathability where you sweat—ultimate protection for moderate to high-aerobic activities.

The latest and lightest addition to our baselayer collection, BL-0.5 styles are designed primarily for adventure travel and everyday use but also great for aerobic pursuits.

800+ fill power down is more compressible and provides a greater loft to weight ratio than 650+ fill power, and is used in our highest performance down products. We specify a 90/10 cluster to feather ratio for optimum loft and recovery. Our 650+ fill power down exhibits excellent compressibility and recovery characteristics. We process it to an 85/15 cluster to feather ratio to emphasize maximum recovery from compression.

Pertex® Microlight offers some of the softest and lightest fabric available--essential when grams and ounces count. This offers significant weight reduction while maintaining proper strength and abrasion resistance. The Pertex Eco series of fabrics feature woven Eco Circle™ recycled polyester yarns, yet still meet Pertex’s exacting performance standards. Both post-consumer and post-industrial waste are recycled to make Pertex Eco.

Thermolite® provides warmth and comfort at the lightest weight, even when wet. Hollow-core fibers trap air inside the fiber for greater insulation, and the larger surface area allows for faster evaporation by speeding moisture away from the skin to the surface of the fabric where it can evaporate more quickly.

Thinsulate™ Thinsulate insulation works by trapping air molecules between your body and the outside. The more air a material traps in a given space, the greater its insulating value. Because the microfibers in Thinsulate insulation are far finer than other fibers, they trap more air in less space, which naturally makes it a better insulator—more breathable, moisture-resistant, machine washable and dry-cleanable.

Trinity™ Waterproof/Breathable Trinity Waterproof Breathable is our all-weather technology created with recycled and recyclable materials. This high performance technology features a three-layer stretch construction and knit recycled polyester face fabric allowing for excellent stretch and range of motion. The recyclable hydrophilic polyester laminate pulls moisture away from the body to the outer layer of the fabric for quicker evaporation, while dot bonding uses less adhesive, improves stretch and reduces weight.

Laminated Softshell Trinity Softshell is our softshell technology with superior stretch and maximum warmth-toweight ratio. This high performance technology features a three-layer stretch construction, a very soft knit polyester face and a warm microfleece back. The microporous polyurethane laminate allows moisture to escape and offers the exceptional stretch and recovery critical in a softshell. “Dot” bonding uses less adhesive to bond layers together, therefore improving stretch and reducing weight.

GoLite’s Lite Rail A/S is simple and intuitive to adjust and delivers best in class stability, flexibility and load transfer.

Convertabelt™ GoLite’s innovative Convertabelt™ appears exclusively on all of our unisex backpacks. This adjustable two-strap hipbelt system delivers optimum fit and performance by allowing men and women to align the angle of the hipbelt with their specific hip profile, thus dialing in customized comfort.

We employ DAC’s Green Anodizing process, which reduces the use of chemicals, dyes and water in the production of our tent poles. We also specify the use of natural silver aluminum clear coat, and opt to color-code only the end sections of specific poles, since that is all that is necessary to facilitate easy set-up.

The fabric of choice for our standard-setting UltraLite Series packs, our exclusive Dyneema® Gridstop weave combines 100% nylon base yarn with Dyneema fibers to deliver the strongest, lightest, performance pack fabric ever produced.

ReFill™ 100% Recycled Polyester Insulation

Tier 1 recycled nylon has replaced virgin nylon in nearly 100% of our main pack fabrics. Tier 1 recycled polyester is being used in all of our sleeping bag shells except for UltraLite Series Quilts. The process is straightforward--used materials are broken down in a process called depolymerization and then utilized as the molecular building blocks for new, recycled fiber. The closed-loop process results in fibers that can be recycled repeatedly. Tier 1 recycled technical materials result in performance on par with virgin, petroleum-produced alternatives. We select Tier 1 recycled materials because we can achieve our required performance standards in a recycled fabric, and in doing so, are able to significantly reduce the impact of our textiles.

SilLite™

No-Bounce™ System Featured in our HydroLumbar™ Series, optimal foam and mesh thicknesses and densities create a stable platform, while stabilizer tension lines secure bottles to pack. Reinforced guide scoops keep bottles in place while still enabling quick and intuitive movements.

No-See-Um™ Mesh Dyneema® Gridstop Nylon

The Pertex Eco series of fabrics feature woven Eco Circle™ recycled polyester yarns, yet still meet Pertex’s exacting performance standards. Both post-consumer and post-industrial waste are recycled to make Pertex Eco.

We worked directly with the manufacturer to fine-tune this 100% recycled polyester filament insulation for use in our RS Series of synthetic sleeping bags and select insulated outerwear. We optimized the thermal efficiency, compressibility, and durability of an already innovative and sustainable insulation.

The Convertabelt™ can be removed entirely to save weight, or the pockets can be detached and the waist strap used alone for minimalist stability.
