he Public Sector Employee Co-op Credit Union (PSECCU), is celebrating 50 golden years. Our Golden Anniversary Magazine will take you on a pleasant and proud journey through the last half century that has marked by a mix of memorable events, significant milestones and a series of innovations for which our founders, leaders and visionaries have to be credited. They have laid a solid foundation for our current success. Our current leaders, members and team continue to collective work to honour the efforts of the early pioneers whose efforts have shaped the many initiatives and policies that continue to positively impact our personal and professional endeavours. The principles of sound strategic planning and financial security continue to be the guiding principles of the PSECCU team. The mission remains to serve members’ financial needs, providing them with a sustainable means of pooling their resources to improve their lives through every stage whether it be acquiring a first home and financing a child’s college education or planning ahead for a secure and peaceful retirement. PSECCU takes pleasure in our role as the vanguards of the dreams and aspirations of our members. We started this glorious journey as the Jamaica Special Constabulary Co-operative Credit Union Ltd with a single faithful step on May 14, 1968. This move to register as a credit union and an affiliate of the credit union movement, brought the total credit unions in the island to 131 at that time. The mission then, was to serve members of the Island Special Constabulary Force and their families financial needs. Since then our name has changed but our mission remains the same.

The PSECCU has rebranded twice and has extended bond to capture all employees of the Public Sector to expand its scope of products and service offerings. The PSECCU charts forward with the mandate to be the premier credit union of choice, meeting and surpassing the needs and expectations of our valued members. We remain your credit union and a bonafide national building institution with an unbeatable record of 50 years of excellence in providing sound financial guidance and helping members to achieve their life goals. This 50th Golden Anniversary magazine highlights the PSECCU’s transformation from the days of operating in a one room office at Harman Barracks to owning modern facilities and operating from two buildings located at 7-9 Union Square, Kingston 5 with three other branches located in the parishes of St. James, St. Mary and Manchester. The growth of staff compliment from two to 42 and the growth of membership from 70 to over 8,600. The role of visionary leadership cannot be overstated in this context. The organization’s performance in real terms and even the euphoria emitted on reflection, rivals that of even the best Jamaican athletic performance – imagine we’ve moved from granting of the first loan to a member of $100,000 to granting of loans to over 6000 members totaling $1.6 billion and the exponential growth of asset to over $2.1 billion. We are on the move! We salute the leaders and members who have propelled dreams into the stratosphere of a beautiful reality. It is my pleasure to share this brief reflection on this momentous occasion and wish to extend special thanks to our contributors and valued members for their continued support. The committee takes this opportunity to also express sincere appreciation and gratitude to our Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee, Credit Committee, Colleagues, Members of Staff and all our business partners for sharing in this extraordinary journey. Happy 50th Anniversary Public Sector Employees Co-op Credit Union, the best is yet to come!

A

s we celebrate 50 years of service, it is a special opportunity to reflect on our rich history. The Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd began its operations in 1968 in a boarded cubicle at Harman Barracks, long before I was even born. History proves that our humble beginnings was steeped in greatness. That year Jamaica: • Saw the bid for the reduction in the voting age from 21 to 18 years was made in the House of Representatives by the Opposition People’s National Party • Reviewed the proposal for the 40-hour, five-day work week for employees in the Central Government Service as outlined by the National Workers Union (NWU). So much has changed and been achieved from then to this day but the Credit Union has never wavered from its mission of improving the financial well-being of its members. Throughout our 50-years history, helping our members has remained our number one priority and is at the heart of everything we do. It’s embedded in our corporate strategy, our products and services. We ensure that our members borrowing needs are met and that they receive the best rates of return on their 6

savings and investments. Over the years the Credit Union has expanded and rebranded twice in the form of a name change and continues to meet and exceed the demands of its members, and there doesn’t appear to be a slowdown in sight. I joined the staff of the Credit Union 10 years ago in January 2008 as a Customer Service Representative and over the years I have been able to achieve not only my educational but financial dreams because of the company’s internalized goals and objectives which is laid out for its employees. There is certainly a rare energy from our CEO Mr. Osmond Bromfield which is contagious, and a synergy that permeates the organization. The Public Sector Employees Co-op Credit Union Ltd is a strong, solid and stable company that has withstood and overcome the challenges of our economy. Our team continues to evolve, remains unrelenting and is always looking for the next innovation to allow us to stand out further from the competition. This commemorative magazine honors the pioneering spirit of our predecessors whose vision of ‘people helping people’ has grown substantially and touched so many lives in the process. Today, we stand with them, looking forward to building a future that others will be proud to build upon. Enjoy your journey through these pages as you experience the history and current life of the PSECCU Ltd. I am extremely happy to be a part of the 50th celebrations of the Credit Union and cheers to another 50 more years of financial soundness!

I

extend hearty congratulations to the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Limited on the celebration of your 50th anniversary. As your cooperative celebrates its golden jubilee as a premier financial institution that provides quality service for over eight thousand members, it brings into sharp focus the reality of the proverb that, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step”. T

he Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union (PSECCU) has maintained an outstanding level of service and professionalism and continues to impress with its ability to offer a host of tailor made plans and packages for its over 100, 000 members and their families all across the island. Since inception, the institution has not only been rebranded twice, but ensured inclusion was a main feature of expansion and benefits in finding the perfect operational fix. I wish to congratulate the PSECCU on achieving the golden jubilee milestone spanning many generations, challenges and ever changing circumstances while keeping the hard working members as the focus and main thrust for all implemented initiatives. You helped to craft and create major savings and investment options for countless public sector employees and their families across the island who would’ve been omitted in the prior organizational structure. Formerly, it was restricted and only offered to members of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF). The subsequent merger between them and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) fully bloomed into an inadvertent call for expansion.

8

This new move saw all public sector workers and their families including those with other credit union accounts moving impressive figures to present day figures five times higher in yield, deposits, share capital, and over $2 billion in assets. The spread of branches across Jamaica facilitate easier reach and inclusion for all our public sector employees and matches our long standing belief in long term financial security for all Jamaicans. The various loan products and services should offer great options during the period of public sector transformation and add to the many choices available to those moving on to other professional and personal pursuits. The PSECCU offers the greatest cushion, financial safety and security to our treasured public sector employees. As a member of the public sector myself, I wish to use this opportunity to again salute the hardworking, resilient and committed management and staff at the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union on this 50th anniversary celebration and we anticipate even greater things as time endures across generations.

A

s the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union celebrates its 50th anniversary, it can take pride in the fact that it has created a range of financial services and products to serve those whose needs have not been met by the traditional financial institutions. The Credit Union, by providing access to credit, has helped its members to build successful businesses, furthering their education and improving their living standards. The Credit Union movement has also taught many Jamaicans the virtue of saving and nurtured many along the path of successful entrepreneurship. One indicator of the growing demand for the services you offer an the reach of your organization is the exponential growth of your membership from just 70 members in 1968 to over 8,600 in 2018. Looking ahead, it is clear that Jamaica’s economic recovery and the achievement of the levels of economic growth required will only be realized with the expansion of Micro, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (MSMEs). It is here that national targets for job creation and a more inclusive economic growth will be realized. It is among this growing entrepreneurial class that the Credit Union movement has made its most important contribution and for this reason has a critical role to play in Jamaica’s economic future. Let me once again congratulate the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union on celebrating this significant milestone and wish for you continued growth and success.

Since inception in May 1968, the PSECCUL has undergone several changes in its structure and name in order to better equip itself to meet the needs of its customers and has indeed evolved in its reach and quality of service.

Through the affordable terms and conditions and wide range of products provided, our credit unions also help to stimulate local investment.

Today, the credit union stands as a premier financial service provider catering to over 8,600 customers, having begun its operations with just 70 members. I also applaud the company’s financial growth. Having recorded $2.1 Billion in total assets as at December 2017 and a savings portfolio of over $1.3 Billion. The PSECCUL is indeed making strides.

I applaud the ‘Outstanding Service’ of PSECCU in this regard and take this opportunity of the company’s golden anniversary, to wish the directors, staff and members continued success, even as the PSECCUL continues to be a major partner and participant in the Government’s overall growth agenda.

O

n behalf of the Board of the Jamaica Cooperative Credit Union League (JCCUL), I am pleased to extend hearty congratulations and best wishes to the volunteers, management, staff, and members of Public Sector Employees Cooperative Credit Union (PSECCU), on the occasion of your 50th anniversary. Fifty years in the life of any organization is indeed a major milestone that is worthy of celebration, and we salute you, as you take time to reflect on the past fifty years, and envision the next fifty years and beyond. For the last five decades, PSECCU has been consistent in providing exemplary service and modern financial products, at affordable prices, contributing to their members’ social and economic empowerment. For this reason, your theme “Celebrating 50 years of outstanding service”, is most appropriate. The fledgling entity that began on May 14, 1968, in the precinct of Harmon Barracks, Up Park Camp, has over the years, emerged as a financial giant in the security services industry. Accordingly, credit is due to the hardworking volunteers and management and staff, past and present, who have collectively contributed to the growth of membership, from 70 in 1968, to over 8,600 currently. The solid growth seen in other areas is also commendable. For example, at the end of 2017, PSECCU recorded total assets of over $2.1B, a loan portfolio of $1.6B, and a savings portfolio of $1.3 billion.

12

Over the years, and through your many changes, attention has been given to expanding your common bond, to accommodate; family members, all employees of the public sector, and past employees, including retirees. This is a true manifestation of the ethos of the Movement, depicted in the hands and globe that Credit Unions are fundamentally about families, biological or otherwise. The celebration of your golden jubilee comes at a time when the Movement is about to enter a new paradigm, the transition from self-regulation by JCCUL, to a regulatory regime superintended by the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ). This is profound, and there will be challenges. I urge you however, not to be deterred, but instead stride confidently into the unknown, while capitalizing on the many opportunities along the way, secure in the knowledge that the credit union principles that have fortified you over the past fifty years, will be the very principles that will guide and sustain you in this new dispensation. Congratulations and best wishes, as you celebrate fifty years of accomplishments and distinguished service to your members, your communities, and Jamaica land we love.

Calvin Allen, M.Sc President of the Board of Directors

A

s President of the Board of Directors of this great and progressive institution, I feel very privileged and delighted to share this message on the occasion of the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Limited 50th anniversary. This is indeed a special time in our company’s history as we celebrate with humility, giving God thanks for his mercies. A popular Chinese proverb states that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. In this case, that single step was made way back in 1968 and has seen the unfolding of a rich and proud legacy of care and concern for the well-being and upliftment of our fellow men. This has indeed been a remarkable and fulfilling journey; one that we must all be proud of and which must cause us to pause, applause, recognize and celebrate. Through God’s grace and mercy, our visionaries have steered us through many treacherous waters into a path of financial health and security.

Reflecting It is hard to believe that it has been 50 years. Who could have predicted that a little more than an idea and the involvement of a few men would have blossomed, survived and evolved to us now celebrating 50 years of dedicated and quality service to our fellow men and becoming a financial institution to

be reckoned with. We were tiny at the beginning. Some would even say our survival is a tribute to our hard work. I would like to think that our 50 years of success can be attributed to a meticulous commitment to core values, our commitment to our employees and their families and most significantly, our commitment to the satisfaction of our members. In fact, it is you our valued members that have remained true, committed and supportive of our every move. We must pause to thank you all for the trust you have placed in us and for your business. Your continued investment has been the catalyst that has caused us to navigate the treacherous waters of financial competition, economic transformation and the liberalization that have taken place of the entire Credit Union movement. It is indeed a movement and it is quite evident that we have not stood still. We have made many moves, hence, thanks to the Cleveland Messiah’s Vision, we are not tenants of our headquarters but still full fledge owners. We have established a track record of doing the impossible. At the heart of these accomplishments is a great deal of teamwork, sacrifice, dedication and a willingness to take risks to the benefit of our members. However, now is not the time to rest. Although we may be tempted to indulge in a self-

convenience and synergy for our valued members. As we take on the mantle of catering to the entire Public Sector family, we will continue to work hard and invest in this movement. We enter this new phase with great excitement as we anticipate what lies ahead in the charting of another 50 years

As we recognize all those that have given selfless contribution to the growth, permit me to single out for special recognition, our current Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Osmond Bromfield. He has served the Credit Union for over 30 years in various positions, such as: Supervisory Committee member, Treasurer and now CEO. His appointment as Treasurer in 1992, has steered us to exponential growth and expansion as under his tenure, the Credit Union’s assets moved from $5 million to over $1 billion and to date, our assets total over $2 billion dollars.

Despite the many changes and at times, the very unpredictable environment, the indomitable will of the past, the passion of offering quality service to our valued members, coupled with your support and trust will be the foundation upon which we will chart another 50 years.

Today, we operate out of four branches. Our head office which is located at 9 Union Square, Kingston 5, Our Area 1 branch at 66 Claude Clarke Avenue, St. James, Area 2 branch at Shop 10 Pompano Shopping Complex, Tower Isle, St. Mary and Area 3 branch, 9 Ward Avenue, Mandeville, Manchester for greater

To all our employees, my colleague board of Directors, Credit and Supervisory Committee, Stakeholders and friends – I thank you for your continued commitment, support and trust. I

am pleased to say that I have been serving the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union (PSECCU) for over 28 years in the following capacities; • 1990-1992 - Vice President Board of Directors • 1992-2012 - Treasurer/Managing Director • July 1, 2012 - present - Chief Executive Officer

On May 14, 2018, we will reach a milestone in the history of PSECCU—50 years of outstanding service to our members. For 50 years, our members have been able to rely on us to be there for major financial decisions, and as we look to the future, we remain devoted to serving our members and our communities. We have many milestones and achievements to celebrate. We have grown and developed in so many ways since our inception in 1968 as the Jamaica Special Constabulary Co-operative Credit Union Ltd to the National Security Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd in July 2014 and most recently to the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd on October 3, 2017. Throughout my tenure I have seen exceptional growth and developments over our 50-year history. We came from humble beginnings; our Credit

Union was founded at Up Park Camp in a boarded cubicle and I am pleased to report that PSECCU’s assets have grown to $2.1 billion, and our Credit Union which began with 70 members have grown to over 8000 members presently. As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, we reflect on our accomplishments which have allowed us to rise as a leader within the Credit Union movement and the financial services industry. We have accomplished many milestones and changes in the last 50 years, including changing our name twice, but one thing remains the same; we exist to serve our members in a way that is altogether different from other financial institutions. Today our branch network has us in four parishes in Jamaica namely; Kingston and St. Andrew where our head office is located, St. Mary, St. James and Manchester. Throughout our 50 years we have focused extensively on product development by providing our members with the best in vaalue and convenience and we are fortunate to be where we are through the hard work, perseverance and dedication of our members along the way. While we are proud of where we are coming from, we are steadfast and focused on where we are going, and we look forward to continuing to provide

To become their financial partners throughout their lives, and to be adaptive, innovative and technologically driven which will make the member experience seamless and

establish meaningful relationships where members are more than just ‘an account holder’. There’s no doubt in my mind that we will face challenges, but I firmly believe that we will be able to overcome these. I am so proud to be part of this team, and as we anticipate what’s in store for PSECCU, I want to thank all of our members, Board of Directors, Committees, employees, and business associates along the way for your dedication and support. We could not have done it without you and we appreciate all the ways that you have helped to shape our history and look forward to seeing where we go next.

he Humble beginnings marked the establishment of Public Sector Employee Co-operative Credit Union Limited (PSECCU) formerly National Security Employee Co-operative Credit Union Limited (NSECCU) and Jamaica Special Constabulary Co-operative Credit Union (JSCCCU) respectively. Founded in 1968 by members of the Island Special Constabulary Force through a spirit of ‘neighbours helping neighbours’, this organization has transformed from a single office operation at Harman Barracks to a celebration of 50 years of distinguish service to the public sector workers and their family, and I am quite honoured to be chairman of the Supervisory Committee at this time. Our major role over the five decades was to maintain oversight of the safety and soundness of the organization. Today we remain very committed to this task. Operating independently of all entities of the credit union, we are dedicated with the constant effort of ensuring that the Board, the staff, and all policies, practices and procedures are compliant with applicable laws and regulations. We are mandated to ensure that the organization constantly seeks to maximize benefit to members, and that the overall operations are in keeping with local and international best practices within the movement. The PSECCU has grown and developed in so many ways since its establishment in 1968. And in so doing, it has positively impacted the lives and livelihood of many. Today, it represents the premier financial institution with service being its core value, and ‘members’ financial security matters most’. Heartiest congratulations to the Board of Directors, management and staff as well as the various committees for a job well done. I am very proud and excited to celebrate with the PSECCU 50 years of achievements. I invite everyone to share ‘the Credit Union’s Experience’! Half a century of sound prudential management has indeed left us with myriad significant milestones and monumental achievements for which we can be proud.

T

he Credit Committee is proud to be a part of this Golden Anniversary Celebration and the tremendous accomplishments of the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union. The growth our Credit Union has shown over Fifty (50) years, is an indication of the golden path we are being steered on to ensure success. The Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union (formerly the Island Special Constabulary Force) started with the concept of a Thrift Club and was thought of by over twelve (12) members of the Island Special Constabulary Force. This concept grew from a humble beginning to servicing its present membership of over 8,000 members and a staff compliment of over 40. We continue to grow from strength to strength, improving our products offering and as such further impacting the lives of our members. Fifty (50) years have given us time to blossom into who we are today; saving and meeting the needs of our members and using that as a compass to direct us into the right direction, resulting in us gaining valuable experience to better serve the financial needs of our members. Considering the foregoing, I want to thank the Board, Management, Staff and Committees for their stewardship over these Fifty (50) years. On behalf of the Credit Committee, we want to thank our valued members for their support over the years and we’re looking forward to growing with you for another Fifty (50) years and beyond.

THE HISTORY OF PUBLiC SECTOR EMPLOYEES CO-OPERATIVE CREDIT UNION LTD

T

he Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd, formerly National Security Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd (NSECCU) and before that the Jamaica Special Constabulary Co-operative Credit Union Ltd, was established from humble beginnings on May 14, 1968 by founding members Mr. Auville Hutchinson, Mr. Clevland Messias, Mr.E.C Murray, and Mr.Leon Bailey. The Credit Union began its operations as the Jamaica Special Constabulary Co-operative Credit Union Ltd in a time when members of the Island Special Constabulary 22

Force (ISCF) were up against low wages and exorbitant interest rates from lending institutions. The first office of the Credit Union was in a boarded cubicle in building number 347 at Harman Barracks Up Park Camp with 70 members joining on the first day. By the end of that year membership grew to 142 members. In July 1968, the Credit Union had its inaugural Annual General Meeting and elected its first Board of Directors, Credit and Supervisory Committee members as follows:

The Credit Union is not only pleased with its growth over the years but its role impacting the lives of its members.

SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE • Messrs Miller • Messrs Carey • Messrs Richards Under the stewardship of Mr. Gosma Budhoo, former Asst. Commandant of the Island Special Constabulary Force, and Mr. Neville George, the Credit Union purchased its headquarters on the third floor at 9 Union Square Cross Roads on May 12, 1987. In 1992, former Vice President of the Board of Directors Mr. Osmond Bromfield took the mantle of Treasurer from Cpl. Derrick Brown. Osmond Bromfield held that position from 1992 to 2012 when he retired from the Island Special Constabulary Force as Commandant to

After recommendations from the Wolfe Report 1991 and several case studies, the government of Jamaica, approved the merger of both forces in May 2014 which was aimed at increasing the numbers in the police force and placing more members on the streets to tackle the country’s crime problem. After the merger of both forces, it became evident that the Credit Union no longer had a common bond to appeal to, and so the membership voted for the rebranding of the Credit Union in the form of a name change to the National Security Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd and a change in tagline to ‘where your financial security matters most’ to strategically re-position itself in the marketplace by extending and expanding its bond to include employees within the auspices of the Ministry of National Security.

Memories Member Testimonials from 50 Years Greetings fellow and prospective members: It is with humbleness of heart that I accept this opportunity to contribute in this 50th Annual General Meeting, and I recognise those who are responsible for allowing it to happen. I thank you.

This noble financial institution, Public Sector Employees James A. Brown J.P Cooperative Credit Union Limited has come a far way since its inception on th the 14 day of May 1968; and within reasonable time I became the 52nd member, and have accepted all the numerous changes of name which tantamount to the same financial goal and benefits. This Credit Union came in the time that rescued us from persons who would financially exploit the weak in our organization, described today as extortionists. They were the privileged persons who paid you your income, and used the opportunity to be predatory; lending and collecting at the same time, if you fell prey and did not have the financial wisdom to protect yourself. The saying is that “Where the need exists, it is folly to resist”. However, it could not have caught me because of my foresight, and I endeavoured to encourage some of my associates not to indulge. Subsequently, at the birth of this Credit Union, it successfully challenged those financial oppressors. This Credit Union provided the opportunity to save regularly what you could afford, borrow within your limit for almost any occasion, and repay without stress.

Some of the benefits that I have received from PSECCU to date have created an opportunity for me to: save within my means, assist with home improvement, acquire furnishings and maintenance. I’ve also paid consolidated bills, family health and insurance, and provided educational support for my children. In addition, my several used car needs were realized; and in 2002 I acquired a new 2002 Honda CRV which happened just one (1) year preceding my occupational retirement. These are some of the opportunities and benefits of being a member of this Credit Union. I am a proud husband and father, and today because of the benefits my family received, they too have become members. Our Credit Union means the world to us, for “it is by diligent sowing that we reap.” It has been my pleasure to have served then on the executive bodies including the board. I wish to recommend that in moving forward, the Credit Union should make more provisions for seniors who are the core builders and carvers of these institutions; and that those at different levels and at the helm of the institution continue to perform at the highest level of integrity and professionalism. I wish to encourage existing and prospective members to examine all the benefits available, choose wisely, save regularly, borrow for real needs, honour your agreed obligation and be a proud investor in your Credit Union. May God continue to bless our Credit Union over, above and exceeding our expectation.

Over the years I have benefitted from a number of small and medium size loans; one such loan assisted me to achieve my goal of owning a motor vehicle – brand new Suzuki Swift from Stewart’s Auto Sales.

MRS. JOYCE BANTON HARRIS, JP

The Jamaica Special Constabulary Force Co-operative Credit Union Limited as it was called then was registered on May 14, 1968 with membership 127 strong. At that time the credit union provided three main areas of service: a means of accumulating savings; a source of credit; and education in the management and control of money. In celebrating 50 years of service, it is important to note and name the founding fathers of the credit union, namely Mr. C.A. Messias, W.C. Jarvis (Deputy Commandant) and W.C. Walcott (Staff Officer), all of whom are now deceased. The then Secretary/Treasurer was Mr. E.C. Murray (Special Sergeant). Having enlisted in 1967, I was privileged to become a member of the Credit Union just a year later in 1968 when it formally commenced operations. My membership number is 17 and I am proud to hold the record as being the first female member. I was also the first female to work in the organization as a clerical staff alongside the late Inspector Leon Bailey who was the then Secretary/Treasurer. The first office of what is now the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union was a single-room

26

Another milestone achieved was the purchasing of my first home in Ensom City, St. Catherine using a loan of J$1,000.00 – unbelievable now but life changing then! Forty-two years ago that sum was a huge amount of money for a Special Sergeant. I am beyond proud to bear witness to the strides of the Credit Union and its team over these 50 years with special commendation to Mr. Osmond Bromfield whose steady hand and visionary strategy has played a big role in this extraordinary accomplishment. I must give God thanks that he has blessed me to be around for a moment like this.

Holistic

health Tips for a Healthy Mind, Body and Spirit

W

e experience it every year, like clockwork, as one year ends and a new one dawns, we all go back to the resolutions list making note of all the things we hope to achieve. For some it might be lofty weight loss goals, for others it might be small steps towards making big changes in their personal and professional lives. The truth is New Year Resolutions as we have come to know and practice them don’t work without a personal commitment to change. The world and the Caribbean in particular continues to grapple with the epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In Jamaica, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma continue to be the lead-

30

ing cause of death; Jamaica’s high crime rate is alarming but NCDs continue to be a major silent killers according to the Statistical Institute of Jamaica which reported that over 12,733 Jamaicans died as a direct result of NCDs in 2014. With that being said, most Jamaicans have come to accept that health and general wellness of the mind, body and spirit is the most important aspect of your life for which we required daily deliberate steps and actions to cultivate positive habits towards a holistic lifestyle. Without holistic health and well-being, all other goals and achievements become null and void. Declining health and vitality robs you of precious energy to achieve your personal or professional goals. We thought it was important to share a few simple tips and practices with our members that can be incorporated

| Holistic Health| into your daily routine right away. On the occasion of our 50th anniversary, we wish you a health life filled with happiness and continued achievement.

1. Move It! Regardless of your age, your brain and body expect and require movement for health. Jamaica’s Ministry of Health recently launched a campaign called Jamaica Moves for that very reason. You don’t have to be a fitness expert or live in the gym, do some form of exercise that significantly raises your heart rate for 30 minutes at least four times a week. Remember also to break up your sitting and move frequently during the day.

2. Rest, Relax, Rejuvenate. We live in the ‘hustle’ era. More people, especially entrepreneurs, take pride in being members of team no sleep. The truth is sleep is often the single most undervalued behavior in our lives, and the one with the most immediate power to improve our experience in every waking moment. Aim to get at least 6 hours or sleep each night. You should also schedule time to relax and rejuvenate your mind, spirit and body in the same way you schedule meetings. Trust us, incorporating this tip will leave you feeling more physically energized, emotionally resilient, and mentally clear.

3. Eat less, more often. Food is fuel, and real food please! Jamaica is blessed with a natural abundance of fruits, vegetables and other tasty crops right from the soil. Lean proteins and vegetables/fruits (complex carbohydrates) are your good gas, your high-octane fuel. You’re best off when you eat in small doses throughout the day, beginning with breakfast. The saying is eat like a king/queen at breakfast, like a prince/princess at lunch and like a pauper at dinner. Start big and keep it simple towards the end of the day.

4. Be present. The greatest gift you can give someone is your undivided attention. We are often so busy chasing the trappings of life that we neglect to spend quality time with those who matter most to us. It is easy to be physically present but mentally and emotionally absent in this era of technology. Shut off your phone at a certain time each day, and practice being present with your family and friends.

5. Practice Gratitude. We’re far quicker to notice what’s wrong in our lives than we are what’s right. To help change this mindset, once a week aim to write a note of appreciation to someone who deserves it, telling the person precisely what you’re grateful for.

6. Never stop learning. In this time, learning is not a rigid structure but a fluid and never ending process. Getting a degree or completing school is a great achievement but no reason to get comfortable. Our brains work better if we challenge them, and life becomes more interesting when we do. Reading books is a simple and effective way to learn and grow, but so is building a daily practice around learning a new language, a sport, an instrument, or around how to fix a car, or draw.

7. Give back. Lending a helping hand not only aids others in need, it’s also very rewarding. Throughout the year, aim to take some time to add value to the world at large by supporting charities, standing up for great causes, or giving back to your community. There’s also the simple act of checking in on a neighbour or friend.

I

’m honoured to be an employee of the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd (PSECCU) for over eighteen years. As one who has served in various capacities within the PSECCU since January 2000, the Tamara credit union’s Maxwell-Green JP., MBA., B.Sc 50th anniversary Deputy CEO brings back a myriad of memories. I began working as an accounting clerk and little did I know at the time that the experience and the people I would work alongside would ignite my passion for the credit union movement and Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union as an organization of choice to work and do business with. The PSECCU provides a safe work environment that fosters teamwork, personal development and career advancement which I am privileged to be part of and can personally attest to. I am thankful to Mrs. Daphne McCaulsky-Johnson, Ms. Brendalyn McFarlane and Our Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Osmond Bromfield for the training and molding me into the professional I am today.

46

Mr. Osmond Bromfield ensures that staff is trained to the highest level of efficiency relevant to their job function to be able to give quality service and professional advice to our membership. He creates a balance, ensuring that the personal development of staff members is aligned with the vision, mission and goals of the Credit Union. While serving the PSECCU over the eighteen years, I’ve witnessed what this credit union means to the hard working police personnel and their families whose financial lives are better because of it. With the expansion of our bond to the public sector, I will also get to be a part of the positive impact the PSECCU will also have on the lives of all public sector employees. It is with immense pleasure that I take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Chief Executive Officer, the Board of Directors, the Supervisory Committee, Credit Committee, Colleagues, Members of Staff and all our business partners for the privilege of allowing me to be included in this extraordinary journey. Special thanks to our valued members for your continued commitment and support as we steer forward. Happy 50th Anniversary Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd!!

he Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union has been my second family since I joined the company in July 2000. As my 18 years with PSECCU continues to flourish, I still very much feel part of an innovative, dynamic group as we continue to grow as a team. It truly is a gift to LISA HARRY Dip.Bus.Ad work with such wonderful colAdministration & Support leagues of so many different but Services Manager complementary backgrounds who truly respect one another and work together in continuing in our success.

Working at PSECCU is a great pleasure and indeed a privilege. I’ve learned so many things about the movement and I will always be thankful to the people who believed in me and gave me this opportunity to grow not only within the company but also as a person. I laughed, I cried, I faced challenges and I also experienced very beautiful moments that will

I was young and full of great expectations and today it is an honor for me to occupy the position of Administrative & Support Services Manager. What I love most about working here is that it supports work-life balance and I’ve always been encouraged by my colleagues to improve my knowledge and develop new skills. PSECCU is a company that offers an enjoyable and engaging working environment, wonderful employees as well as growth and development opportunities and a chance to learn how to think outside the box and find new ways to achieve the best results. This is an exciting time to be working at PSECCU and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that come with the expansion of the business.

I am a proud and motivated employee of this noble organization and privileged to have witnessed and participated in more than twelve years of growth and transition which has led to an impressive 50-year milestone. This is a very momentous occasion and I pause briefly to say CONGRATULATIONS to my organization, the PSECCU, as “it’s very easy to be different

ifty years is a major milestone for any organization. As we celebrate, it is not so much a festivity but, a solemn occasion to pause and look back on this 50-year journey and more importantly, to give thanks to Almighty God for taking us this far. I’m happy for the opportunity to Racquel Walters B.A express my sentiments on the Loans Officer achievement of this milestone. I am sincerely proud to have contributed to the many accomplishments for the past thirteen years.

Throughout my tenure I have gained a second family consisting of the Credit Union staff, volunteers and members alike. Gratefully, I look back with admiration as I reflect on the existence of the Credit Union. I am profoundly impacted by the value and

high esteem in which the membership is held. It is for this reason the Credit union goes above the norm in addressing the ordinary and extra ordinary needs of members. It was Muhamid Ali who said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” In my mind these words epitomize the 50 years existence Of the Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union and will continue to be the foundation on which this family oriented organization thrives. It is my belief that the Credit Union has accomplished a lot over these past 50 years. It has empowered countless persons, professionally and academically in realizing their full potential. Delightedly, I look back with admiration and forward with anticipation. Anticipating another fifty years of continued success, accomplishments and most of all exceptional service to the membership.

GREAT IT HAS BEEN A

EXPERIENCE

I

am honored as a past member of the Management Team to extend my heartiest congratulation on the 50th Anniversary Celebration of this noble institution.

It was a pleasure to have served from 1988 when I joined the staff as a clerk typist. Throughout the years I was promoted to Loans Offices, Manager and General Manager from 2004 to my retirement in 2012 after which I was contracted to head the Mandeville Branch for two years ending in 2017. Pleasant memories extend in my mind to this day as

ndeed it is a deep feeling of satisfaction thankfullness and appreciation for me to be asked to pen some of my experience during my tenure at the Island Special Constabulary Co-operative Credit Union Limited. Afterwards known as the National Security Employees Co-operative Credit Union Limited and now the Public Sector Co-operative Credit Union Limited. It was in July 1988 that my association started and reamined cemented through to September 2016 when I retired. My love, dedication and committement earned for me many promotions from the start as Customer Service, I ascended the Rung of the ladder to Loan 50

I reflect on the co-operative, the CEO Mr. Osmond Bromfield and other Senior Managers and Staff whose hard work and dedication piloted us through harsh financial times to attain the status of the best Credit Union “a force to be reckoned with”. My vision for the next 50 years is to see this institution reach its highest pinnacle. DAPHNE MCCAULSKY-JOHNSON Former General Manager

Officer, Loan Manager, Operation Manager, Assistant Office Managaer and finally before my retirement I moved from the confines of the headquarters to assume the position as Branch Manager, Region 1, situated in Lucea, Hanover and Montego Bay St. James and serving the Western part of Jamaica. For me, there were moments of sadness but with dedication, application and committment, gladness soon prevailed. There were moments of disappointment but success prevailed, there were moments of darkness but there was light at the end of the tunnel. There were moments of hopelessness but with a sraff sticking to their task in act of oneness and togetherness. In retirement I can look back and say “I came, I saw and I succeed.“ As I reminisce, I feel real happy that I was attached to the department of the Island Special Constabulary Co-operative Credit Union Limited. I came upon good

I take comfort in the fact that the Credit Union, its leadership and staff will continue to strive.

he Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Ltd has over the years remained committed to improving the lives of its members and catering to their social needs. With so many financial institutions at your fingertips offering similar services, how do you choose the best financial option? Credit Unions offer a different way of banking, a more connected way that isn’t just about numbers but about people and their needs. The Credit Union movement in Jamaica and around the world continues to be a force to be reckoned with by providing members with peace of mind, safety and financial security. Credit Unions provide its members with access to low interest loan products and high returns on their savings and deposits. Each Credit Union member has equal ownership and equal voting power irrespective of how much money one has in their accounts. At a Credit Union, every customer is both a member and an owner. Credit Unions exists to help people, and their goal is to serve all their members well. Let’s look at a few reasons why considering a shift from a for-profit institution might be the best decision you can make for your money and your financial health. 1. People Helping People A point of pride for all Credit Unions is the ‘people helping people’ philosophy. Instead of distributing wealth to a few shareholders, resources are returned to member owners in the form of lower interest rates on loan products and competitive rates of return on your savings and investments. 54

2. Making a Difference Philanthropy means a concern for human welfare and advancement and being community-minded. Here at the Public-Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union there are several programs which are aimed at developing and touching our members lives such as; a) YEARLY GSAT GRANTS – Each year the Credit Union looks forward to awarding grants to children of its members who have been successful in their Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) Since the program’s inception over 10 years ago we have awarded over $8M with yearly grants ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 per child. b) TERTIARY SCHOLARSHIPS Every year the Credit Union offers four Scholarships which are valued at $200,000 each to members or children of members studying at the tertiary level. c) DISABILITY FUND This fund was created to assist current and former members with disabilities who is need of medical assistance. 3. Reduced or No Fees Through mobile banking and other online tools, credit unions are offering convenient and cutting-edge options for you to stay connected to your money. As increasing fees continue to affect many services at other financial institutions, Credit Unions continues to make their members top priority by offering low cost accounts. While you have options when it comes to your finances, a not-for-profit institution that is member-focused should be your clear choice.
