Your Feedback on our Spring Issue of Nifty Magazine Great Role Model

Summer 2008 Issue of Nifty Magazine

Gorgeous. I think Magali spiced up the issue to the fullest extent. I absolutely loved her interview and it really gave me motivation to keep pursuing my modeling career. I want to congratulate her and wish her and Nifty Magazine all the best.

Tell us what you think!!!

Tanya Willis, 23- Lincoln, NE

10 out of a 10

Powerful individual I was so happy to know that the second issue of Nifty Magazine was going to feature a Latino and a singer. I actually do both as well and I think that Magali had such a beautiful face for the magazine. She is determined, talented, and very inspiring and I love that she is so humble. I hope to see her on a future cover in the near future. Jessica Fernandez, 20- Reno, NV

The girls selected for “Nifty’s Top Ten” were absolutely amazing. I felt all the models were beautiful and that they all have promising careers. When most think about their first photo shoot, a boring white or gray background in a studio comes to mind. You might have booked a session in the mall or maybe your friend knows a place where she went for her family portrait but it’s never what you were expecting. ATTENTION, you don’t have to take a school picture anymore there are many other places to shoot. Where exactly? After you master the art of posing and using your body as your temple to create gorgeous images you are ready for some color ... lots of it. Outdoors at the beach, in the sand, or near the pool might be great places to begin. Nature really can bring out the nature tones in your skin and define your look in very pleasing ways to the eye. Keep an open mind because every place can be a shot, the park, trees, cars, staircases, dirt, water, buildings, houses, animals, open fields, yachts, and even the most boring places could bring exciting shoots (besides the studio of course). You might have luck indoor but it is all about the background and how it coordinates with you. You might want to blend in with your surroundings or stand out to differentiate yourself, either way its a great potential looks for your portfolio. Talk to your photographer and brainstorm some ideas to keep the film rolling and the camera clicking. Good Luck!!!

How much are you worth?

A million dollars. Who wouldn’t want to wake up every morning working for six figures or more per day? Let’s be realistic, most of a model’s rates is based on your evaluation of your experience, specialty, modeling ability, and marketable look. You might think you are worth more than what your resume says but we have a list to consider when choosing your pay rate: Length of Experience: How long have I’ve been modeling at a capacity acceptable by industry’s professionals? Do I have consistent experience or are their gaps on my resume? Specialty: What kind of model am? Am I most desired? Do I have more than one specialty or limited to one main focus? Modeling Ability: Do I have special talents to advance my modeling ability like dancing, acting, or lessons in modeling, acting, dancing, speaking, and any related highlights? Marketability: What would make me different from the other hundreds of models considered? Am I influential do I have an impact on the industry in some way that can make history? Do I know how to market a product or brand and do I have the experience to be marketable? Even the top models have difficulty answering these questions but they find ways to fill in the blanks. You might need to build your resume and gain more experience to have the rate you really feel comfortable with. You do not want to sell yourself short but you want to make sure you are being fair but not being cheated. We would suggest you use the internet to research some of the modeling databases to see what other models like yourself list as their modeling rates. Analyze what kind of experience they have verses your own to see if you are short changing yourself or being unrealistic. If you are too overpriced for your experience you might cause clients to refuse to hire you.

A Nifty Upgrade Jessica Hammond Age:20 H: 5’8” Dress Size: 2/4 Measurements: 32-24-36 Albuquerque, NM Photographer: Leila A. Leija

As a devoted model in the industry, with a desire for the fashion world, Jessica continues to attend “Ash Worth University” to pursue her degree in fashion merchandising. “Fahrenheit,” Jessica’s modeling agency, helps make her dreams a natural reality as she is one of their most marketable models. Not only does she have noted experience with modeling, she has been acting since she was six. Her high interest in acting has scored her local commercials and extras in movies that Jessica is certainly adding to her resume. Jessica understands the need to help others as she has donated proceeds to charity that she recently shot a calendar for. A few venues, workshops, and classes later she is ready to take the modeling industry head on as she should. Comp Card Vs, Portfolio

Nifty Magazine

When you think of marketing yourself, at a quick glance, a comp card is the most used method. It has been extremely popular over the last decade, a great marketing tool besides a more detailed portfolio. So which is best? A true model should have both. One does not necessarily weigh out the other but might show more diversity in what your client may be looking for. A model’s portfolio can be consider your book of your best professionally photographed images. Based on your experience and length of your career in modeling, your portfolio should display tear sheets and/ or a combined looks of the photography shot for your collection. This is more detailed than a Comp Card, which is really used to hand off as a business card along with your resume. A portfolio is more of a source for yourself and your agent. Comp Card are less expensive to duplicate because it is printed on postcard material that is easily obtainable. If you are looking for consideration, a comp card would be the best thing to send before an initial meeting with your potential client.

Should I hire a Make-up artist?

Nifty Magazine

Cosmetology is one of the most preferred career interests of models. Some may prefer to learn how to do their own make-up so they are not stuck with the expenses of paying someone else to provide their services. If you are not adequately skilled to do your own make-up than you might want to consider a make-up artist for shooting. You might agree this could give you the look that you’ve planned but it also can add an edge to how your photographer photographs you. If you are more of a naturally beauty this could still work in your favor, having a make-up artist doesn’t automatically equal heavy make-up applications. You have to be comfortable enough to explain to your make-up artist and your photograph the look you want to captured in your image. Remember on your shoots it is all about you. You are the emphasis of the shoot so you should have say on what goes on in your shoot that you’ve set up for yourself (non-client related). It is the model’s responsibility to bring her own wardrobe on set, along with styling her hair and make-up. Everyone could use a little help, a little guidance might not cost you a fortune. You might be able work with a student studying cosmetology or a start-up professional who might be willing to work with your photographer on a “TFP” basis.

Building Confidence We all struggle with this. Maybe some more than others, but its reality that we all have dealt with. Sometimes you might feel like the girl on the current magazine covers represents everything that you don’t: Nice Hair, luscious long hair, and that perfect body we would all die to have. How do you build confidence in an industry that expects so much from you? Here are some tips that we suggest to imply:

Stop Criticizing yourself Don’t beat yourself up, there isn’t a perfect person made on this earth. Even the most beautiful woman has insecurities but you can’t tell by the radiance she gives off in her presents. Highlight your assets We all have them, if it’s your nose, eyes, legs, hips, or maybe your chest; you have a part of your body that you love. There is always someone else who wishes they had that asset even if they don’t tell you as often as you might want to hear it.

Inside Tip Sometimes in the modeling industry Turn a Negative into a Positive “perfect” does not always work. Shine through it, find what makes you unhappy and use that to your advantage. You might Some of the most booked models not like the way your body looks in a bikini but you might love the way you look in a dress. are the ones with a corky and edgy Take what you’ve got and embrace it, accept your diversity and make it the reason why you look. This might not be the “typically” stand out from the rest. girl that most guys would consider` Beautiful but if the camera likes you the clients love you.

Are you entitled to your place? Nifty Magazine would love to see if you beat the competition. Visit www.NiftyMag.com, Download a submission application and you could be in your place in the next issue. Don’t wait your competition might just beat you to it, see you soon!

What does “TFP” Mean? There are many definitions for the acronym “TFP,” but the most common is Trade for Print. Although some of the other meanings are: Time for Prints, Time for Portfolio, and Trade for Portfolio, “Trade for Print” is the most popularly used. Numerous models will work with a photographer on a “TFP” basis. Many amateur photographers might start off their careers by using models who agree to shoot for prints, or a CD with all the shot images, so they can add it to their portfolio. Not to say that professional photographer will not shoot on these terms but more beginners choose to work with models at no cost. If you choose to work for “TFP” you must take in consideration that the photographer is contributing their time to capture your images free of charge. You should not feel obligated to pay for your photos, the photographer is using you as art to display your images to build their credibility. Keep in mind that some may not have the most experience and if you are looking for a certain look or shoot a “TFP” shooting may not be the most desirable choice.

Nikiya Palombi

Age: 20 Height: 5’8” Philadelphia, PA Contact Email:

“Triple Threat” You can’t wait to see how you turned out in your pictures with your last shoot and you want your photographs now. Based on the agreement between you and your photographer will determine how and when your images will be available to you. Although you might be a little antsy, it might take a couple weeks before you see the final product. You must allow the photographer time to organize your images and sort them to their routine format. It might sound ridiculous to wait for pictures that can be emailed, printed, or copied to a disc, but it takes more preparation and most importantly time. If you have a lot of shoots and you’ve requested special work (like retouching, cropping, and different color schemes), this may take longer than what your photographer intended. Trust us; you want your photographer to take their time perfecting your images especially if you want to use them to book your next gig. You shouldn’t have to wait months but you should want your photographer to provide you with the best finish product possible (even if it means a couple of days extra of waiting). You can suggest having the images delivered to you in your desired format but still keep in mind the agreement, you previously made before your shoot, before demanding special attention.

My shoot is over and....

She wants to “push the limits of what people consider to be beautiful” and she dares to explore new ideas that do. This Blonde hair blue eyed twenty year old lady might sound like a Barbie, but she has a very strong presence that will make you think twice of stereotyping her. Broken leg in all, she was able to pursue her acting career like no other, playing roles as a pregnant girl, drug dealer, talking French poodle, and even a mute. You might think she is an extra, but she will give you more than what you’ve bargained for. Mastering a challenge dance style called “Vaganova” is actually a walk in the park for Nikiya. She makes it look easy to move to the Russian music waves but she does not miss a beat. In fact she is a very talented model that not only makes her a triple threat, but a great candidate for her clients. All of her training does not even begin to explain how talented Nikiya is; you just have to witness it for yourself. Check her out at www.myspace.com/NikiyaPalombi.

Diva Blanca Blanco What makes a diva? Is it the way she steals your attention with out saying a word with her fierce movements? Could it be the way that she demands ownership of the stage without your opinion? Whatever the case may be, Nifty knows that Miss Blanco Blanca is a true runway “Diva.” Entering the scene at fifteen, Blanca knew her passion for this industry would get her a long way. She embraced every opportunity given to her making her a crowd pleaser on the runway. Even without the music playing, you can hear her heels clicking on the pavement that causes your heart to beat rapidly. Blanca keeps her mind in the right direction as she takes this industry hands own in front of the camera and behind the scene. She has launched her own cosmetic line and produces her own show that shows her determination to get the recognition she deserves in every way possible. Not only does this make her our “Diva” but makes Nifty Magazine very honored to share our pages with Blanca. Her advice to you should be, Work it Out, you go diva lady.

Hips don’t LIE

If your a true “diva” then you have to own up to the stature. Take the bright ray of confidence and shine it into your walk.

Ask Shakira, she knows how to work her hips and swing them to her beat as you should. Naturally in tune yourself to an upbeat melody and get those hips in motion.

All rights should be owned to your signature walk. Although others might want to copy, it should never be duplicated. Make your walk look easy but too hard to master.

Life in the fast lane

From Experience ” A wise person learns from others mistakes”

Parties. Clubs. Anything that evolves people and music always seems like its more fun than a movie. In an industry that is all about image you love to show off your latest fashions at the hottest nightclubs right? Who says that you can’t live it up and enjoy being young? You might ask yourself “what does partying have to do with model?” Although one is in front of the camera and the other is offsite it relates to the social encounters that follow a “good day of work.” How so? In most events, you attend a beautiful arena that is very upscale with the professionals from the agency that include all the contacts you want to list in your cell phone. From the booking agent at the most recognizable agency from the representation from the most prestige fashion designer on the runway, just about everyone who counts. So you decide to mingle in and deliver on your networking skills to exchange names with anyone who gives you eye contact. You are comfortable and ecstatic that you have such a great resume and you feel you are at the right place all within the right hour until you receive an invitation. The club you always wanted to be on the VIP list for is inviting you to be a special guest at private party tonight. A couple of outfit changes later you find yourself with two of your closest friends at the bar enjoying the atmosphere. Who would think anything could go wrong from here? Until you discover that you can’t even stand straight and need your friends to be your crutch for the remainder of the night. You eventually can’t handle the heat so you decide to call it a night then you crash. The next morning you find yourself fifteen minutes late to an interview you planned the night before with that beautiful designer and immaculate agency. Not only are you full of excuses you are not dressed in the confidence you brought with you to the gathering that gave you this opportunity. You’re sense of professionalism has completely vanished away and you feel alone in a room full of people. You may say one drink too many but we say that with a dose of lacking of priority. The glitz and the glamour will come but do not ruin your chances of scoring big because you wanted to go in the fast lane in the wrong direction. Something to think about.

“Mme. Weathersby is a label that clothes a woman from fashions centuries ago, sometimes finding herself exactly in the center of revolutions and royal scandals. My clients will sometimes feel as if they were Duchesses or a Demi-Mondaine, commanding the most regal suitors. Perhaps a wearer might go to the Hermitage see her likeness in an oil painting. Her mules might resemble a Lancer's jacket from the Preobrazhensky regiment. Weathersby will always remain wearable, realistic, modern yet historical. The label is for a women who admires ideals of particular ages. There will always be an understated sexuality to a Weathersby, making it easily identifiable in regard to the extraordinary quality of workmanship, fabric selection, exquisite embroidery, and most importantly uniqueness of garment. One will always find the perfect piece whatever the occasion. In time, Weathersby will become known as 'Une luxe qui depasse tout ce que l'on peut rever'. My devoted clientele will look as they have followed the European principle of investing in a wardrobe.

“I have learned that when one door closes another one will always open. You have to always keep thinking positive. If you want something bad enough it will come true. “ Quoted from Jessica, herself

More than .... No Less.......

Jessica Elbaum She’s what some may consider a Perfect ten.

W

ords can not say enough, when we are referring to our sexy cover model, Jessica Elbaum. She’s what you might call an exotic beauty based on her super stunning looks and extremely flawless blue eyes matching her perfect blonde hair. We are proud to have such an amazing beauty as Jessica Elbaum to grace her marks on our pages of this summer issue of Nifty Magazine. She’s a twenty-three year old devoted model who really is determined to be more than just the average girl. Beauty is not the only thing Jessica has going for herself, she is very talented. She currently works as a hairstylist for the popular TV series “Greek.” This is an opportunity others only could imagine to have, but Jessica accomplishes the goals of making it to the top one step at a time. Yeah Casey, Frannie, Rebecca, and Ashleigh might be hot but Jessica definitely outshines them in this issue of Nifty Magazine. She is responsible of achieving the look of the ABC Family’s “Greek” cast but she is not responsible for your jealousy. Although, she is quite the humblest person you would ever meet, she does have that special something that is envious. Nifty Magazine’s editors had the wonderful opportunity to interview Ms. Elbaum to see exactly what information we could get from her. You will be surprise what secrets Jessica reveals to us, you just have to read on to find out

Nifty Editor: First and foremost I would like to welcome you to the Nifty family we are so glad to have you as our third cover model for Nifty Magazine. Jessica: “Thank you! I am so honored to be apart of such a great magazine”. Nifty Editor: You are such an astonishing beauty and you really shine on our cover of Nifty Magazine. What was your immediate reaction when you find out about your placement as a Nifty Magazine cover model? Jessica: “I felt so excited and very proud.” Nifty Editor: It must have been very exciting, who was the first person that you told? Jessica: “my family “ Nifty Editor: So let's talk about how you got started on your modeling journey. When or how did you know Magazine that this industry was for you?

Nifty

Jessica: “I grew up in a very small town in Southern Indiana where fashion is a little backwards instead of forwards. I would always ask my parents to buy me any fashion magazine so I could keep in touch with the latest fashions and modeling. I have always known it was something that I wanted to be apart of because it is such a beautiful industry.” Nifty Editor: Just as you are, beautiful. Has anyone or anything influenced you to work harder to make this passion your reality? What is your inspiration? Jessica: “My parents have always been a great influence in pursuing my dreams and goals. I look up to Carmen Electra because she is a model who is the same height as me and against the odds of women who are under 5'7 making it in this industry, she has landed many national campaigns and has been very successful as a model.” Nifty Editor: Very true, she is definitely a great inspiration. So many have heard the stereotype that if you are under 5'7" then you can't model. Do you feel this is true being under the typically modeling standard/requirements? Do you feel yourself being limited in the modeling industry? Jessica: “I have always been told that if you are under 5'7 you can not be a runway model. I find this to be false. I am under that height requirement and I have done runway shows. I think anything is possible. Yes most big designs such as Gucci and Channel are going to book 6'0 tall girls but never say never for girls who may be shorter. We could be the new trend on the runway.” Nifty Editor: What would you suggest to the others who are not the perfect 5'8" to do to make the most out of their modeling career? Jessica: “There have always been girls who are shorter than 5'8 who have became very successful in the modeling industry. There are jobs for girls all shapes and sizes. I say never give up on your dreams.” Nifty Editor: Westmore Academy of Cosmetics and Tri-State Beauty College are obvious schools for cosmetology that you have attended. As a model, many people would want to go to school for that craft but you picked cosmetology, why?

Jessica: “I have a lot of goals in life. Cosmetology has always been a passion of mine as well. I have achieved many goals as being a hairstylist and makeup artist. I got into the hair/makeup guild 706 very quickly. I work as the Key Hairstylist on the hit TV show Greek. I am one of the youngest in our union, and for me this has been such a great goal to achieve. I have always dreamed of working behind the camera as well as in front of it. I think it is important to see how it works both ways.” Nifty Editor: That is fantastic, how do you think the art of make-up plays a role in modeling? Is it something you would want to pursue full time? Jessica: “I think that being able to know makeup inside and out is a great tool to have as a model. You will always know what colors work best for you on your own skin. I would love to pursue both full time, I think it is possible. I have lots of breaks throughout the year from the show I work on and I think I can do both.” Nifty Editor: You have worked with a talented photographer, James Irvin, who actually shot the cover of Nifty magazine. How is his style different from the others? Jessica: “James is very driven and has a great passion for photography. We see eye to eye on the looks we are trying to achieve. He really listens to me and we come together as a team.” Nifty Editor: It is very important to have a photographer that can work with you to make the best results possible. What do you do to prepare yourself for a shoot? How do you make your pictures look so natural? Jessica: “(before the shoot) I run on the treadmill a lot and watch my diet the week before. (while shooting) I think about something uplifting or funny when the pictures we are trying to achieve are smiling and for more serious ones, I think of something deep and meaningful.” Nifty Editor: Education is very important and you have attended University of Indiana for theater, do you think that a lot of stuff you've done was learned in college or on set? Jessica: “I think you learn basics in college, but most things I have learned have been hands on experience from being on set.” Nifty Editor: So what do you feel is your best asset and why? Jessica: “Personality. Someone may be beautiful on the outside but if they are not beautiful on the inside they are not beautiful at all. I have always been taught to treat others the way you want to be treated and it will pay off, and it has.” Nifty Editor: What would you consider your biggest accomplishment? Jessica: “Being chosen as Nifty's summer cover model… My first cover!” Nifty Editor: Thank you Jessica, we think we made a huge accomplishment by choosing you to be our cover model. Diana Torres What should you do?

Where should you go? why should I???

“I work with this photographer who takes excellent photographs of me. He knows exactly what I want even before I tell him but I have some discomfort. My boyfriend thinks I’m being native but I believe he might be a pervert. It sounds crazy because I still want to work with him but I don’t know if I should because of his flirtation comments. He touches me to show mw how to reposition myself but it’s too intimate (I guess). What do you think?” Amy L., 24, Detroit, MI Nifty Advisor: I don’t think anyone should feel any sort of discomfort due to inappropriate comments or suggestions to move or touch your body in any sexual manor. If you are having doubts about his intentions then you might want to reconsider the person who shoots your photographs. Remember this should be a business relationship and you should not have to feel like he is getting “too” friendly with you. I would suggest you to bring someone with you if you choose to shoot with him again. Let someone else witness the environment and allow their feedback of the situation. Chances are the same behaviors will not be presented, but at least if you have some type of security then you might have a better comfort level than before. Take this seriously, this is not something that is and should be addressed if necessary. “I would never ask this question, but I really don’t know who to ask. A few days ago, my friend got a casting call to be in some video for an artist here in Atlanta. She asked me to go with her to the second call back and then the director asks me if I would like to be in the video too. I agreed but now I’m having some serious doubts. It is a rap video that displays a lot of profanity and they make the girls look like strippers. I want to have exposure but I don’t know if this is the right way to go. Please HELP, the shoot is in two weeks!!!” Sandra C., 20, Atlanta, GA Nifty Advisor: Some things are more important than a quick buck or maximum exposure, it’s your dignity. Even though you might think this shoot will be for a day or two, with an appearance on television that could run for a couple of weeks, it’s not that simple. Once you agree to be in any type of production like this, you give all your rights to use your footage for however long the director/ artist would like. In the future, you might not desire an image of yourself dancing in a vulgar way in front of the camera. Remember everything you do now, affects your future so make smart decisions. Some music videos might not be on the same themes as the one you’ve described, but you have to look out for your reputation cause no one else will better than you. If you are doubtful you might have valid points that should be thoroughly analyzed to make sure it’s the best choice for you. Explore your options and recognize consequences for your choices. Don’t be discourage or feel obligated to do anything, opportunities come and go, again they come and go.
