DESIGN STRATEGY A century and a half ago the concept of ‘The Wild Garden’ was born in William Robinson’s book of the same title. Robinson was a gardening revolutionary, passionate about the beauty of nature, who popularised naturalistic gardening; virtually invented the herbaceous border, and was a pioneering conservationist. In the best ‘Arts and Crafts’ manner, he championed local materials and sense of place, but worked in a rustic, rural style. How can his ideas be interpreted in a contemporary context? The ‘New Wild Garden’ revisits his ideas and looks again at how appropriate and fitting they are to today’s gardens, parks and public greenspace. The garden celebrates beautiful, colourful and romantic naturalistic plantings that are simple to maintain and which encourage wildlife, combined with innovative ‘crafted’ use of modern or recycled materials, and a strong sense of water capture and conservation. The setting is part of a larger garden, and provides a restful, contemplative and playful space: a re-interpretation of the Arts and Crafts garden into a modern and contemporary setting, combined with a clear environmental and conservation message.

PLANTING STRATEGY The planting in the garden is naturalistic. The planting plan shows the locations of the main trees and shrubs in the garden, but the herbaceous layer will be implemented as a number of planting mixes that will fill three different planting zones. The plant mixes in these zones have been carefully worked out according to colour of both flower and foliage, heights and textures of the plants, but there is no detailed planting plan showing the precise location of each plant: the intention is that the planting is set out randomly within the mix, with the majority of plants being placed in groups of 3-5 of the same species or cultivar within the zones.
