Veteran actor to premier new work
Barry MacGregor stars in his own “Tales of the Theatre”
Opening night of the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts, Tuesday, May 31, will feature the premier performance of Barry MacGregor’s “Tales of the Theatre”, written and performed by MacGregor, who has starred on Broadway and in theatre across Canada. It will be funny, and fun, and terrific entertainment. MacGregor asks the question, “What happens when a play you are watching goes wrong? Is every performance without a flaw?” He’s the right man to ask. In the 60 years Barry MacGregor has been a professional actor, he has been present at quite a number of what he terms “major hiccups” during performances, and he has a large collection of “Tales of the Theatre”. MacGregor has established a stellar theatrical reputation with his work with the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, on Broadway, and in theatres around the world. In 2004, he

Festival Gala features “The Essentials”, The Festival Gala is a highlight of the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. This year, the evening includes performances by the outstanding acappella group,The Essentials; the official opening of the New Hamburg Live! Art Show, a Silent Auction featuring tickets to major cultural events, original art, fine wine and plenty of other surprises; with refreshments and a cash bar. The 2011 Festival Gala is held Wednesday evening, June 1, starting at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by TD Canada Trust. The Essentials bring their incredible talent, superb musical taste, and always evident sense of fun to the Gala. The group has ushered in a new decade with a new member, new sound, new CD, and renewed enthusiasm. Their website notes that they been called “one of the finest acappella groups in the world” by one reviewer and "musical geniuses" by their mothers.
Both opinions may be true, because The Essentials continue to sell out shows while reinventing themselves and are now emerging on the international stage with some new twists on some age-old ideas. The group includes Dan Speck, Thom Speck, Jo3 Oliva and Janet Turner. “It’s been a great journey so far but that was really just a warmup,” says Dan Speck. "Since Janet joined the group in the last year, we’ve basically reinvented ourselves. But we won’t ever get away from what got us here – strong vocal harmonies and performances, tied to unforgettable melodies.” The Essential’s newest member, Janet Turner, is a singer/songwriter who was born in London, Ontario but moved to Toronto a few years ago. Coincidentally, this was the same journey that The Essentials had taken a few years earlier as a group. The Essentials began as a group of guys

Their unique range of voices and arrangements of songs from the 50’s to modern day struck a chord with audiences near and far. Their success led them to tours from Vancouver to Halifax in Canada, from San Francisco to New York City south of the border, and even across the pond in The Essentials perform at the Festival Gala, June 1, 7 p.m. at the New Hamburg Europe. “I was excited to join Community Centre. works by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven in the spring of 2005 to perform the music of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and their contemporaries on period instruments. The Quartet is rapidly gathering notice for its dynamic performances and distinctive sound. Violinists Rona Goldensher and Elizabeth Loewen Andrews, violist Anthony Rapoport, and cellist Laura Jones are well known to audiences as performers with leading period instrument ensembles throughout Canada and the U.S., between them performing with Tafelmusik, Toronto Consort, Aradia, Masques (Montreal), Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (San Francisco), Aston Magna (New York), and many others. Along with their wealth of experience in Baroque and Classical styles, the members of the Windermere String Quartet have a wide range of musical tastes and have also been acclaimed for their performances with such groups as Sinfonia Toronto and Talisker
Players and Klezmer music with the ensemble HuTsaTsa. These eclectic interests bring a freshness and passionate spontaneity to their performances. The quartet has also performed at Toronto’s Academy Concert Series, the Toronto Music Garden, Nuit Blanche, Toronto Early Music Centre’s Musically Speaking series, Stratford Chamber Music, and the chamber music festival Music at Port Milford. Irish Descendants bringing their The Irish Descendants, a well known – and much loved – Celtic music band from Newfoundland brings their kitchen party to the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts on Friday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m., Steinmann Mennonite Church. It’s a special night at the Festival; this rollicking concert is presented in memory of Jim Miller, husband, father, antique dealer and community volunteer who passed away Nov. 25, 2010. Those who attended his musicfilled funeral will understand why friends of Jim have joined together to sponsor this concert by one of the finest bands in the nation. Since their formation in 1990, The Irish Descendants have garnered a loyal fan base in their native Canada, and captured the attention of an ever-growing international audience. The band’s award winning recordings range from lilting ballads to toe-tapping reels, and their high energy, humorous live performances have made them a popular

Vicki St. Pierre to do what she does best Fans of the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts know Vicki St. Pierre well. She has been Music Director of the Festival since it began in 2009. She has conducted the choir each year, and has sung at Gilbert & Sullivan, Broadway, and gospel concerts. And yes, she will wear some of those hats this year, too. But this year, she is also going to do what she does best of all, as New Hamburg Live! proudly presents our own Vicki St. Pierre in concert. St. Pierre is a renowned classical and operatic mezzo-soprano. On Good Friday of this year, her performance in Bach’s St. John Passion led one reviewer to write, “Vicki St.
Pierre was memorable,” commending her for “a steady sense of purity and focused refinement.” She is praised for her warm, lush voice which invitingly combines clarity of expression and beauty of tone, and is described as rich with both a darkness and brightness. St. Pierre is one of Canada’s busiest classical singers. Recent engagements include performances of Bach’s St. John Passion with the Grand Philharmonic Choir; Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra; Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with the Toronto Consort, Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea with Opera Atelier, Zelenka’s St. Cecilia Mass with

Choral workshop, performance, New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts is again offering a Choral Workshop and Concert, but with a shift in musical focus for 2011. The Choral Workshop – culminating in a bluegrass and gospel concert – was a highlight of both previous Festivals. However, organizers understand that many choral singers appreciate a variety of musical styles, and that choir members enjoy singing classical works, as well. This year, the Choral Workshop is part of our Tribute to Franz Liszt, Saturday, June 4. The workshop is again conducted by New Hamburg Live! Musical Director Vicki St. Pierre. Accompanist will be pianist James Bourne, who performed at the Festival in 2009. Singers who attend the workshop will learn two Franz Liszt anthems... and will then perform as a massed choir to

She makes concerto appearances with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony and with I Musici de Montreal. Other engagements include performances at the Washington’s Library of Congress, Boston, Ottawa, New York, London and Newcastle. While hailed for her interpretations of Mozart, she is also acclaimed for performances of major romantic and twentieth century concertos. “The most
sensational but, better, the most unfailingly cogent and compelling Prokofiev's Third I have heard in years.” ( The Globe and Mail) Ms. Chi has also given memorable recitals in Hamburg, Hanover, Milan, Rome and Salzburg. She has appeared with the CBC Radio Orchestra in Vancouver, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, Toronto Sinfonia, and Symphony Orchestras world-wide. Katherine Chi’s debut recording, on the Arktos label, features works of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Ms. Chi’s performance is sponsored by the businesses of Sobey’s Plaza, New Hamburg.

Gospel Concert finale features The New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts has established a strong tradition of “a big finish”. The closing act is a Gospel Concert, which will be held Sunday, June 5, at 3 p.m., at Steinmann Mennonite Church. This year, g o s p e l music lovers will be Hiram Joseph thrilled with the line-up of performers, which features some of the best area musicians backing a trio of incredible gospel singers. The soloists – who will also be backing one another with rich harmonies – include Denise Pelley, of London; Hiram Joseph, from Toronto; and New Hamburg Live! Musical Director Vicki St. Pierre.
They will be backed by an All-Star band including guitarist Mike Erb, John Wiebe on bass, keyboard player Scott Galloway, drummer Jeff Cowell, and – back by popular demand after his guest appearance with the Ken Whiteley Band last year – Tom Cummings John Wiebe on vibes. As well, the concert will feature back-up vocals by the New Hamburg Live! Singers, a small group adding even more depth to the Gospel harmonies of the afternoon. Denise Pelley is known across Canada for her jazz performances at events such as the du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival in Toronto, the Ottawa Jazz Festival, the

well-known band, great soloists Waterloo Jazz Festival and, of course, many more. She has been featured in Oprah Winfrey’s “O magazine. Hiram Joseph is one of Canada’s premier gospel artists, with a career stretching over 25 years and touching 35 countries. He has shared a stage with legMike Erb ends including Mother Theresa, Billy Graham and Tony Campolo. Most recently, he has been a featured artist on the very popular Gaither Homecoming Tour. New Hamburg Live! is very pleased to include New Hamburg’s own Mike Erb and John Wiebe in our Gospel Concert lineup for 2011. These two superb musicians are among the hardest-working and busiest performers
in the region. They are joined by colleagues keyboard player Scott Galloway and drummer Jeff Cowell, who local music lovers will know from a wide variety of gigs, including the Epicurean Hootenanny. Vibraphonist Tom Cummings, who recently moved to this region Denise Pelley from Texas, was little known in the area until he lit up the place with his vibe work at the 2010 Festival. And speaking of lighting up the place – the audience will eagerly anticipate a reprise of Vicki St. Pierre’s show-stopping solos in the her gospel concert performances during previous Festivals.
