As his beloved sister Madeleine succumbs to a mysterious illness, Sir Roderick Usher invites his old friend Allan to his castle for support. Jean Epstein & Luis Bunuel’s 1928 interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale of paranoia and suspense is considered cinema’s first true Gothic horror. In The Nursery’s new score incorporates sound design along with more traditional instrumentation (including shruti box & sansula) to complement the Gothic style of Epstein and Bunuel’s haunting, avant-garde vision.

jane weaver Jane Weaver has been a formidable figure in UK music for over two decades, in bands such as Kill Laura and Misty Dixon, and founding Manchester-based Bird Records. Her six self-penned solo albums have brought an ever increasing cult audience and May this year saw her latest body of work ‘Modern Kosmology’ released to great acclaim. Building on 2014’s superb ‘The Silver Globe’, Weaver’s latest album adds a sprinkling of fairy dust on her dream pop that’s filtered through vintage synthesizers, motorik beats and jangling guitars. Don’t miss our favourite psych pop doyen who has truly come of age.

Metropolis
Electronic duo Factory Floor return to Sensoria to present the northern premiere performance of their new live score to this sci-fi classic. 2017 is the 90th anniversary of the release of Metropolis. Widely regarded as a pioneering work of cinematic science fiction, Metropolis depicts a dystopian future where a city’s downtrodden, exploited underclass of workers secretly plot a revolt. The film is the 150-minute reconstructed and restored 2010 version (including 25 minutes of footage previously thought lost). There will be demos by Sheffield Robotics before the screening. Supported by Goethe-Institut, London. With thanks to the Murnau Foundation and Eureka Entertainment.

rumble The untold story of one of popular music history’s most significant omissions. In 1958, Link Wray released the now legendary instrumental track “Rumble”, a song with which he would go on to change the sound of rock ‘n’ roll forever. But his story, like so many others, had one significant aspect all but erased, his Native American heritage. From the blues and jazz, to pop and rock ‘n’ roll, the influence of Native American music has had a profound effect on contemporary music throughout history. Featuring interviews with icons such as George Clinton, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Martin Scorsese, Iggy Pop and more, this feature length documentary fills in the missing chapter of popular music and exposes the immeasurable impact Native Americans have had on the music we treasure today. Supported by Québec Government Office in London.

In June 1964 hundreds of college students, eager to join the civil rights movement, traveled to Mississippi, starting what would be known as Freedom Summer. That same month, two groups of young men, made up of musicians, college students and record collectors, also traveled to Mississippi. They had both come to find an old blues singer and coax him out of retirement. 30 years before, Son House and Skip James had recorded some of the most memorable music of their era. Mississippi, that summer, was an extremely tense and violent place. Finally, on June 21, 1964, these two campaigns collided in tragic fashion. Two Trains Runnin’ revisits an important moment when America’s cultural and political institutions were dramatically transformed. Still feels relevant in current times.
Rare screening and live re-score of the 1983 version of The Moomins and the Comet, by original composer Graeme Miller. The original book Comet in Moominland (1946) by Tove Jansson was written during a time of hardship and war and the tolerant world of Moominvalley offered a refuge from the harshness of reality. The storyline sees Moomintroll and Sniff set off to the Observatory in the Lovely Mountains, to find out whether a comet will hit Earth. The music for the 1983 version was written and played by two Leedsbased post punk avant-garde theatre composers, a suitable complement to the programme’s surreal storylines and freaky but friendly ‘fuzzy felt’ animations.

Laibach go on tour to North Korea! This Slovenian industrial group is the first western band to perform a concert in the hermetically sealed country. The avantgarde art rockers with their hard-hitting march songs and completely totalitarian aesthetics have provoked both right and left. A perfect choice to celebrate the regime’s national holiday - apart from the fact that Laibach’s totalitarian style is also bold satire. But travel to North Korea they do, facilitated by the Norwegian provocateur and North Korea expert Morten Traavik.
Raving Iran Anoosh and Arash are at the centre of Tehran’s underground techno scene. Tired of hiding from the police and of their stagnating career, they risk one last rave in the desert. Back in Tehran they also try their luck selling their illegally printed music album without permission. When Anoosh is arrested, there seems to be no hope left. But a phone call from the biggest techno festival in the world brings new potential opportunities, challenges and life decisions. 12

Lord Sinclair has built up quite a following thanks to this charismatic host’s unique and fun ideas. Those who attended All Tomorrows Parties (ATP) events in their heyday may recall the Sunday quiz by Lord Sinclair that gave a place for music geeks to go head-to-head (usually nursing a sore one of their own). He’s since gone on to do pop quizzes and music-themed bingo nights in bars and at festivals all across the country. We’re excited to welcome a specially created one-off quiz to Sheffield for the first time.

Trafalgar Warehouse 2 (standing) 120 Trafalgar Street Sheffield S1 4JT Upper Chapel, Norfolk Street S1 2JD The University of Sheffield Drama Studio, Shearwood Road S10 2TD Each artist acts as the opener in a venue, plays 40 minutes stripped down/acoustic set then jumps into a waiting car outside which will speed them to the next venue. And the same again to the last venue. So each artist becomes the opener, middle act and headline – and they say democracy doesn’t work! And the audience sits still, maybe has another pint, has a chat in between whilst the artists break all speed restrictions in order to get to the next show. The only catch is no one knows what order the artists will appear at which venue. So it’s pot luck. But the important thing is you get to see: Richard Hawley, James Dean Bradfield and Lou Doillon all on the same bill in the most intimate surroundings. Founded in 1958 by Desmond Briscoe and Daphne Oram, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was home to a maverick group of experimental composers, sound engineers and musical innovators. In a series of small studios within the labyrinthine corridors of the BBC Maida Vale complex, the Workshop explored new ways of using - and abusing - sound. Using early electronics, oscillators, handmade synths and tape loops the Workshop created the other-worldly soundtrack to some of BBC television and radio’s most iconic programmes including Horizon, Quatermass, Newsround, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Delia Derbyshire’s iconic Doctor Who Theme - still the high water mark for British electronic music nearly 50 years after it was recorded. Now, more than 15 years after the Workshop was decommissioned, original members Peter Howell, Roger Limb, Dr Dick Mills, Paddy Kingsland and archivist Mark Ayres are back working together and currently enjoying a well-deserved renaissance. 21
