Oshiomhole mourns Justice Oputa
Continued from page 1 “Oputa Panel”, the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa displayed extreme patience, resilience, fairness and the wisdom required to handle such an important national assignment to the admiration of all.’ “He distinguished himself
in all areas of professional, social and family life and stood tall among his peers for his intellectual prowess and high sense of integrity. He was always on the side of justice and equity. “His death is more painful at this time that the nation requires the wisdom of men of high stature like him to help navigate
the country through her difficult moments. However, while we mourn the loss of such a great mind, we also celebrate his many accomplishments. His philosophical judgments for which he will forever be remembered have served as a reference point in the nation’s legal system.
On behalf of the Government and people of Edo State, I commiserate with the Government and people of Imo state; the Nigerian Bar and Bench on this sad loss. “I pray God to grant the soul of the late Justice Oputa peaceful rest and his family the fortitude to bear the loss. Peter Okhiria,
commended the effort of the Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Party leaders who did everything possible to reassure Pastor IzeIyamu that it was improper to do hop-step
and jump in politics, but rather to work together in building the party along defined democratic processes. Chief Idah said “we state unequivocally that the action of Pastor Ize-Iyamu and his friends will in no way affect the structure unity,
functioning and fortunes of the APC in Edo State; rather it has given APC a chance to consolidate and work for the growth of the party along with loyal and dependable party faithful,” he stressed. While describing the list of members who attended
the pastor’s meeting and their stagnancies as a “mere attendance list rather than list of persons decamping from APC, the interim state chairman urged APC members across the 18 local Government Areas to remain clam and continue to mobilize support for APC in their various locations.

He also disclosed that the committee is not a replacement for the ongoing search and rescue operations by security agencies or for covert intelligence gathering required to assist the operation. According to him, the setting up of the committee was inevitable to confront the sad circumstances that surrounded the abduction of the girls. The government in conjunction with the international community, he said ?will do everything possible to get the girls back. “First of all, let me clarify that this committee is not a replacement for the search
and rescue operations being undertaken by security agencies or for covert intelligence gathering required to assist that of the operation. The operation of the security and intelligence services will continue to intensify till our daughters are rescued and brought safely home to their families. First let me make it very clear, luckily the Minister of Justice is here, that this committee is neither a judicial committee nor an administrative committee to look into the affairs of this incident. No. It is not administrative panel set up by Federal Government or a Judicial Committee. I must make that very clear because those are the responsibilities of the state and not that of the Federal Government. I say so because before you
know somebody will go to court and say that Federal Government is interloping in an area which is supposed to be an exclusive preserve of the state”, he noted. Continuing in an emotion laden voice, President Jonathan noted: “You will agree with me that this is not a committee that brings joy to me and indeed our country men and women. “However, it is a necessary step which government must take to confront the sad circumstances surrounding the abduction of female students, our daughters in Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok”, he explained. According to the president, the committee will be primarily concern with providing public interface with all directly concern in the tragedy
towards providing well coordinated citizens inputs into the overall investigations. “Fellow country men and women, this is a trying moment for our country and it is reassuring that we have the empathy and cooperation of friendly countries from across the world at this time. I am appreciative of the fact that this sad incident has attracted global outrage. This is a clear testimony to the fact that humanity can come together and stand as one against evil no matter how it is presented. This is the time when we must dwell together beyond all political, religious or regional divide against our common enemy. We must remain vigilant and be ready to assist security agencies and authorities at all time”, he added.

External debt climbs to $9.16 billion management and borrowing that state government use By JOSES SEDE
ABUJA - The issue of the country’s rising debt profile
was yesterday, the major concern of the National Confab Committee on Public Finance as members sought to know the level of control the Debt Management Office has on state governments as regards to borrowing. The Director General, Dr. Abraham Nwankwo, insisted that borrowing and debt management are part of modern economy. He gave examples of countries like Germany and UK that have strong and frugal economy but still borrow. He was the first guest of the Committee. In his presentation, he put the nation’s external debt at 9.16 billion dollars, with the states having approximately 2.8 billion dollars. According to him, States account for 18 per cent of domestic debts while the federal government accounts for 82 per cent. The laws guiding borrowing, he said, stipulate that no state can borrow except with the expressed permission of the National Assembly; and any state that does not conform with the stipulation
would be seen as committing an illegality. States also require the approval of the Finance Minister to borrow from the capital market, he added. For States to borrow in whatever form, they must obtain the approval of their respective Houses of Assembly. Dr. Nwankwo explained that it was the responsibility of SEC to ensure that the money borrowed from the capital market by the States is judiciously utilised. He said in 2007, the DMO took a decision to help states establish debt management departments to reconstruct their debt profile, particularly domestic debt which he put at N8.7 trillion, excluding debts owed local contractors. Contractor ’s debt is not included because it is a structured debt and usually provided for in the budget. The Committee Chairman, Senator Adamu Aliero, expressed concern over the action of State governments who borrow money indiscriminately from foreign sources without due process. He sought explanation from the DMO why it was so. The Director General’s response was that relevant agencies of government saddled with the responsibility of tackling states that violate the laws regarding debt
should take appropriate action. While Nigeria’s cumulative debt at N10.1 trillion, about 10 per cent of the nation’s GDP, Dr. Nwankwo, insisted that Nigeria has been consistent in servicing all its loans. A member of the Committee, Col Bala Mande expressed worries over the tripling of the nation’s debt and wanted to know the relationships between the DMO and other relevant agencies like EFCC and ICPC. Another member, Chief Dipreye Alamieyeseigha wanted to know how effective the control mechanisms are regarding borrowing, given that most States do not conform with laid down prescriptions. Dr. Nwankwo explained that the DMO works with State governments but has no relationship with either EFCC or ICPC, since the DMO was not a law enforcement agency. On the effectiveness of the mechanism to control State governments, he said the DMO could do anything once the State Assemblies okay such loans as stipulated by the law. He said the citizens have the responsibility of ensuring
borrowed money judiciously. The committee also met with the delegation of the National Planning Commission led by Mr. Tunde Lawal, a Director of Micro Economic Analysis, who represented the Minister of National Planning, Shehu Yuguda. Mr Lawal briefed the committee on the state of the nation’s public finance and the role of national budget in public finance management. He said deficit financing was inevitable for a developing nation like Nigeria and listed the major sources of Public Finance to include Federation Account, Value Added Tax and oil revenue which constitute about 76 per cent. He said the net federally collected revenue in 2013 was N6 trillion, while oil revenue accounted for 76 per cent of all net revenue accruing to federal government. · The GDP in 2013 was 9.8 per cent · Value added tax 16 per cent, customs 9’percent · Non-oil tax increased from N1.5 trillion in 2010 to 2.1 trillion in 2013. He stressed the need to tackle issues of waivers and exemptions, and said government was working towards reducing recurrent expenditure.

CBN laments low participation
Cashless policy: YOLA - The Acting Governor of Central Bank of Nigerian CBN, Dr. Sarah Alade, yesterday expressed concern over low participation of stakeholders in the effective implementation of cashless policy. Alade expressed the concern in a key note address at the cashless policy sensitisation in Yola. She said that while the CBN was playing a leading role in its development and implementation, there was also need for effective cooperation among stakeholders for it to succeed. “Operators, merchants, the government, among others are extremely important in the implementation of the cashless policy. “The policy, if properly supported and implemented will ensure the efficiency of Nigeria’s payment system. “It will contribute to the country’s economic and social development through increased financial resources,” Alade said. Alade, who was represented by Alhaji Yahya Lawal, the Yola Branch Controller of the bank, said the success of the policy depended on the cooperation of all.
Alade said that since the introduction of the policy in 2010, the apex bank had embarked on the repositioning of the nation’s financial system. “In this journey, we require the cooperation of all parties so that we can bequeath a safer, more efficient and effective payments system,” she said. Mr Aaron Yaduma, Head of CBN’s Shared Services, said the cashless policy was introduced to meet Vision 20:2020 requirement. Yaduma said that the policy was not intended to eliminate the use of physical cash for payment but rather to reduce other ills associated with it. Gov. Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, who was represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Ibrahim Vokna, lauded the CBN for the cashless policy. Nyako said the policy had improved financial transactions as well as curtailed financial irregularities in the country. He, however, tasked the CBN to do more in the sensitisation of the people, especially those living in the rural areas on the benefits of the policy. “The state government will soon ensure that all ministries, departments and agencies are linked with e-payment,” he said.

Cleric Advocates Promotion Of Technical Education
IBADAN- A religious leader, Satguru Maharaji, has advocated the introduction of technical education in the country’s university curricula to reduce unemployment. Maharaji told newsmen that introducing technical education would expose students to various vocations that would make them self-reliant. “I have been advocating for 20 years now that university farms should be established to expose students to the mother earth and produce to make ends meet. “Stringent education laws should be made for the nation’s development,’’ he said. He said that the country in the last 100 years had slipped from being a producer nation to a consumer one. Maharaji, who also supported the establishment of universities
by religious groups, however, faulted the exorbitant tuition fee being charged. “Private schools are blossoming while the public ones are dying. “I do not disagree with government taxing religious groups, having been oppressing the people with the wealth they have amassed,’’ he added. Maharaji also stressed the need for universities to be linked to the old culture which embraced truthfulness, love, honesty and service to humanity. He urged government to develop zero tolerance for corruption, “We cannot continue to tolerate a situation where someone who
Ekiti Guber Poll: Police Warn ADO-EKITI - The Ekiti State glasses indiscriminately. Commissioner of Police, Mr Canditates Uyana warned political parties Felix Uyana, has directed governorship candidates of parties to get police permit before using siren and cars with tinted glasses. Uyana gave the order on Wednesday at an emergency security meeting with 18 governorship candidates in AdoEkiti on the June 21 election. “It is illegal for any of the gubernatorial candidates in the state to use vehicles with siren and tinted glasses without first obtaining permission from the State Police Command,’’ he said. Uyana said that the police was not happy with the way and manner some of the 18 gubernatorial candidates were conducting their campaigns. He said that the command was shocked to realise that in spite of the appeals and warnings made to them in the past to avoid fomenting trouble while carrying out their campaigns, they continued to ignore the warning. “The incidence of politically motivated crimes such as malicious damage to posters,
billboards, banners and other valuable property of fellow candidates, including attempted murder have continued unabated. “The menace cuts across three major political parties and from our investigation, the only deference between them is in terms of depth of involvement,” the police boss said. According to Uyana, the level of intolerance so far exhibited by all political actors toward one another is unjustifiable. The commissioner said that the command had so far recorded a total of 25 politically-related criminal cases of which 14 had already been charged to court. He said that the remaining cases were at the various stages of investigation. The police commissioner said it had also been observed that most of political parties and their candidates had resorted to the use of vehicles without registration numbers. He said that others also use vehicles with siren and tinted

Confab Delegate Advocates Exploitation Of Solid Minerals
ABUJA- Dr Nelson Uwaga, delegate representing professional bodies at the National Conference, has called for the development of solid minerals available in each state to boost national development. Uwaga, President, Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM), made the call in an interview with newsmen. He held the every state of the country had enough resources to sustain it and create jobs. “Every state in this country is
endowed with abundant natural resources, so why are we depending solely on oil? “We need to develop these resources and we can only do this when we devolve power from the centre and develop the country economically’’, he said. Uwaga advised the country to emulate Indonesia in the use of earnings from the oil sector to develop other sectors of the economy rather than sharing the revenue among states. “Indonesia has oil but you never hear about it, because
specifically, the oil is meant to developed industries. It is purely for development. “I agree they have in their system that such weak states are supported and that is because we must be our brothers’ keepers. “Beyond that, they don’t share their money the way we do here. They use it to set up industries and the result is that there are jobs, and the youths are working and they don’t have time to go for insurgency.’’ The delegate stressed the need to improve the country’s power
relocation of students to sit for their examinations in the state capitals in safe locations. “The minister in turn wrote to the three governors but none of them responded; then I directed my zonal coordinator in Borno in particular, to liaise with the Ministry of Education in that state. “The response they got was so disheartening; they were told that they had security in place for the candidates and that we should
come and conduct the examinations in the schools. “They also said that they are not ready to relocate their students from Chibok; and indeed other areas to Maiduguri or nearby locations, where security agencies could provide security,’’ he said. He noted that after the abduction of the girls, the WAEC officials got a response from Borno government that it was ready to relocate the remaining
supply to boost industrial development and employment generation. He said, “If there is enough power supply in this country, the economic structure will change completely and people will work. “Nigerians are the strongest people that I have ever met on this planet. They are bold, strong and innovative but need the right environment.’’ Uwaga said there was need for government to invest in education and ensure that every citizen acquired sound education.

ABUJA- The Head of National Office of WAEC, Mr. Charles Eguridu, says the Borno government officials should be blamed for the abduction of school girls in Chibok. ABUJA- The Kenyan President, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Abuja on Sunday on an official visit to Nigeria. The Kenyan president, who arrived at Nmandi Azikiwe International Airport in the evening, was received by the FCT minister Sen. Bala Mohammed. Speaking after receiving the president Mohammed said the visit was to strengthen the bilateral relations between Nigeria and Kenya. He said Kenyatta and his host, President Goodluck Jonathan, would discuss how to strengthen economic relationship between the two countries as well as the security challenges facing them. “President Jonathan believes in African brotherliness; just yesterday some areas were bomb in Kenya, it is better the two countries come together and discuss the way forward to address the security challenges,” he said. Mohammed presented the Kenyan president with the Key to the City, which conferred on him the Honorary Citizenship of Abuja, as a mark of respect for strong friendship between the two countries.
He said WAEC had been silent because it did not want to heat up the polity by creating tension between the federal and the state government. He noted that he had been, on several occasions, encouraging the workers who had refused to go to Borno, Adamawa or Yobe to conduct examinations that there was adequate security in the states. “I wrote to the Minister of Education to ask for the
students to another place called Uba. He said 530 students applied to sit for the examinations in the area comprising 395 girls and 135 boys; adding that after the abduction, 189 were relocated to Uba to continue their examinations. However, Hajiya Nana Shettima, the wife of the Borno governor wife, said 53 girls had returned safely to their parents.
ABUJA- The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, has said it had undertaken a study on the frequent deterioration of roads in the country. Prof Danladi Matawal, Director-General of the institute said in an interview with newsmen in Abuja that the research was funded by the Samuel Olatunde Fadahunsi Foundation. He said N6.8 million was received from the foundation for the project, which also entailed designing and fabricating an interlocking block making machine and developing ceiling boards using pulp and sawdust. According to him, the researches have been highly successful, and a number of publications on the subjects have been made. Matawal said the findings were presented during the 2013 national conference on road failure organised by the institute and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria. “We have also promoted a publication which was sold and distributed to the public and the media. ‘This was done so that those who are involved in road construction should see very glaringly some of the reasons for road failure.” On the interlock block making machine, the DG said it was also successful, and was able to address problems of “overheating and leakages of hydraulic from the valves of the machines”. Business + Economy Unstable Power Supply Hindering Phone Manufacturing - NCC ABUJA - The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says the instability in power supply is hindering the manufacturing of mobile phones in the country. The NCC Director of Public Affair, Mr. Tony Ojobo, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Abuja. Ojobo said that before a mobile phone manufacturer could invest in the country successfully, there must be a stable power supply, among other factors. “The issue of power has to be addressed before we begin to manufacture phones because power plays a very critical role in manufacturing. “Cell phones use micro-chips and other software; it is not a thing that you can manufacture when the light goes off. “Any interruption when the production process is ongoing may cause monumental damage, meaning that the cost of such phone will be too high because manufacturers are not charity. “This means that the cost of production will affect the item and find out that the factors of production will contribute to high
cost of in terms of manufacturing. “There are automations that are programmed on the computer and without light, it can’t be achieved,’’ he said. “If people are manufacturing using generating set you will have to consider the price of diesel required to run such production plant. Some of the phones like techno, he said, were being assembled in Nigeria because we don’t have manufacturer yet. He noted that it was only local companies that assemble computers that were available in the country, saying that there was no single manufacturer. “The issue of production of phones in Nigeria was a policy issue, but as at now there is no Act that says phones that will be sold in Nigeria should be manufactured in the country.

UNILORIN Plans N1.2b Oil Palm Plantation ILORIN - Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, the Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin, has said that the university would soon establish an oil palm plantation of more than 1,000 hectares. Ambali, who disclosed this in Ilorin while addressing the 239th meeting of the Senate of the university, put the cost of the proposed plantation at N1.2 billion. According to him, this is in the bid to fully discharge the university’s three-pronged mandate of teaching, research and community service. The vice chancellor said that
the project would be flagged off on Thursday, May 15, by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi OkonjoIweala. He said that Okonjo-Iweala would be joined by the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike and Agriculture Minister, Dr Adewunmi Adeshina. Ambali said that the plantation would provide training and laboratory facilities for students in the Faculties of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. He said that students in the Departments of Forestry, Plant Biology and other related
disciplines would also benefit from the project. The vice chancellor said that the plantation would also be a good source of internal revenue for the university. Ambali disclosed that clearing of the site would commence in earnest ahead of the May 15 flagoff date. He said that a renowned Professor of Agriculture, Job Atteh, had been appointed as the Chairman of the Oil Palm Plantation Committee. Speaking at the meeting, Atteh
said that the plantation, planned to kick-off with 10 hectares in the first instance, would be “a highly profitable venture.” He said that land clearing had already commenced, while the committee had brought in 2,000 oil palm seedlings from the National Institute for Oil-Palm Research (NIFOR) in Benin City, Edo. Atteh said: “We have the Tenera variety, which has high oil content in the fruit and it is expected to start fruiting in two to three years.”
On the revenue prospect from the venture, he said that at maturity, the university would reap 10 tonnes of fresh fruits from each planted hectare. “We expect to get 4,000 kilogramme of palm oil, 500 kilogramme of palm kernel oil and 600 kilogramme of palm kernel cake”, he said. Atteh said that the revenue would be at about N1.2 billion per annum from the 1, 000 hectares at the peak of production.

Mai-Abba also said the inability of other shareholders to inject more funds stemmed from the fear that the company operated like an agency of government. “The presence of government is scaring away our shareholders though there has been no interference, but there have been negligence on the side of the two governments by not patronising their own products,” he said. The managing director said the company established in 1980 with Alind of India as technical partners had an installed capacity of 20 kilometres of cables and 20 kilometres of assorted conductors per day. He asserted that the high capital intensive nature of the industry made it difficult for the company to operate with a little over N3 Million Working Capital. The Alind Nigeria Ltd boss described as regrettable the piece meal release of the N50 million lifeline the Bauchi state government offered the company in 2008.

THE Federal Government says 86 persons out of 1, 623 reportedly infected by the cholera outbreak in some parts of the country have died. As its response, the Federal Government directed the Nigeria Centre for disease Control to immediately coordinate all its response activities and report to the ministry of health daily on both the patterns of occurrence. The Federal Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in a statement by his Special Assistant (Media and Communications), Mr. Dan Nwomeh, directed all federal health facilities in the country to provide free services to cholera patients. AS at the last checks, the cholera outbreak has affected a number of states including Ogun, Oyo, Plateau, Zamfara, Nasarawa and Lagos with fears of possible spread to other parts of the country. There is also gastroenteritis outbreak in Sokoto and Katsina states which have not been confirmed to be cholera. WE are alarmed at the sudden outbreak of cholera in the country and the fast rate of its spread. The death toll is also disturbing because it show the parlous state of our attention to basic hygienic practices in the country. IT is shameful that while other countries in sub-Saharan Africa are making progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goal on Sanitation, Nigeria is off track. Also shameful is the fact that Nigeria is off track in meeting the Millennium Development Goal for Water. Cholera, as we all know from basic science or hygiene is a water-borne disease. It is sad that in spite of billions of dollars earned from crude oil since its discovery in commercial quantity in 1958, access to potable water is still a mirage to many citizens as 42 per cent of Nigerians still take water from unwholesome sources. WE also decry a situation where the Federal
THE NIGERIAN
Curbing The Spread Of Cholera Government still saddle itself with provision of water to Nigerians, a responsibility it ought to have devolved over the years to the States and Local Governments, which are the tiers of government closest to ordinary citizens. ALSO, owing to the failure of government to provide potable water to its citizens, many resort to self help with poor regulation of the sector by government whose responsibility it is to regulate the sector. Many boreholes are located near sewage and pits while a good number are located near graves in residential premises. Some citizens as a result are practically drinking their faeces. These situations predispose citizens to water- borne diseases such as the cholera epidemics that is ravaging parts of the country. IN some parts of South-West of Nigeria, human faeces and wastes are exposed close to sources of drinking water in such a way that the outbreak of cholera is as good as a time bomb waiting to explode. WE therefore call on governments at all levels to rise up to their responsibility of providing safe drinking water to Nigerians and take steps to regulate the sector in such as way that private persons involved in water provision for self-use comply with international best practices. WE urge governments of affected states to take a cue from the federal government by ordering free medical services to all cholera patients in secondary and primary health
institutions across the country. AS the nation is currently undergoing the process of amending the 1999 constitution, or producing a brand new constitution as being demanded by Nigerians from the national dialogue advisory committee, we urge the law makers and conference participants to make access to water and sanitation a right for all Nigerians. It should be expressly stated in the constitution. This is, more so, when a number of International instruments and convention exists governing the right to water and sanitation. However, governments of all countries need to domesticate these instruments for the rights of citizens to be assured. ON 30 September 2010, the UN Human Rights Council affirmed for the first time that the human right to water and sanitation is legally binding. Nigerian authorities need to guarantee this right for all citizens. The right to water and sanitation is derived from the right to adequate standard of living, which is recognised in several international treaties. These include the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) to which 160 States are party, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which has reached nearly universal ratification. IT is instructive to note that the Council’s resolution helps those denied the right to water and sanitation to hold governments to account. It is for these reasons we call on Civil society and those at risk to actively claim this right from duty bearers. Issues MOST residents of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are contending with various challenges, ranging from accommodation to transportation, among others. Abuja, especially the city centre, is considered expensive and ranked the 31st most expensive city in the world by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Cost of Living Survey, conducted in 2011. Residents are also worried that notwithstanding poor public utilities, they are compelled to pay levy on virtually all facilities in the city. Observers note that FCT, especially the city centre, is gradually becoming an elite settlement. They say that Abuja has attracted a huge influx of people, leading to the development of satellite towns such as, Kubwa, Karu, Nyanya, Mararaba, Suleja, Gwagwalada, Lugbe, Kuje and other smaller settlements within and outside the FCT. According to them, most of the low income earners live in these areas with inadequate infrastructure, where the annual rent of a bedroom apartment is between N350, 000 and N450, 000. Mr Femi Olubode, a resident of Lugbe, a satellite town of FCT, opines that the Ministry of FCT ought to have built more houses for civil servants and low income earners. “A situation where a civil servant who earns N50, 000 or N60, 000 monthly has to pay N350, 000 or N450, 000 per annum for a bedroom apartment is worrisome.’’
But Olubode observes that rents will have been lower if the Ministry of FCT has been aggressive in the construction of houses in the Federal Capital Territory. “I have been living in Lugbe for many years, in spite of high rent, the residents have always relied on boreholes and water vendors as sources of water. “Beyond the accommodation problem, most of the residents pay about N1 million per session for a child’s school fees in private schools in FCT and most of them spend a lot of money on transportation,’’ Olubode lamented. Mr Martins Egbe, a resident of Galadimawa in FCT, says appropriate authorities should introduce measures to regulate the cost of accommodation in the FCT. “There should be fixed rents and regulations and

Challenges Of Living In The FCT how much apartments should cost depending on where they are located and the available facilities,’’ he said. Citing some challenges in health sector, a resident of Wuse in the city centre, Mr. John Ibe, narrated his experience when he took his son to a public health facility. “I had to wait for five hours; I watched my son being weighed down but there was nothing I could do. “Even after seeing the doctor, the hospital did not even have the prescribed drugs and I had to buy the drugs elsewhere. “It is a very pathetic situation and it happens in virtually all government
By CHIJIOKE OKORONKWO hospitals in the FCT,’’ he said. On transportation, Mr. Johnson Umeh, a resident of Kubwa, said that when the FCT new transport scheme was introduced, residents heaved a sigh of relief. He however said that several months after the introduction, many residents could not make effective use of the high capacity buses because of their irregular schedules. “If you have to depend of those buses, it is either you miss going to work or you go to work very late, because some of them operate at a time when most workers might have left for
their offices. “Sometimes, more than three buses will be at the bus stops waiting for passengers; at another time, passengers will be at the bus stops waiting for the buses,’’ Umeh noted. According to him, the few FCT cabs available charge cut throat prices to convey people to their various destinations. All the same, the FCT Administration is aware of the myriads of problems facing the residents, and poised to solve them. On housing, Minister of State for FCT, Ms Olajumoke Akinjide, said the administration would

provide affordable houses in order to address the accommodation challenges faced by residents. Speaking at a forum in Abuja, Akinjide said the government would allocate land in the area councils to individuals and estate developers. She said the administration would then develop infrastructure in the satellite towns and declare certain districts as affordable housing districts. The minister also said the administration would involve the private sector to provide the houses, saying that the design, price and quality would be controlled by the administration. Akinjide said 5,000 housing units would soon be constructed in Mamusa and Wasa districts of the FCT. “The overall objective of the project is to stem the dearth of accommodation in the FCT and ensure that a secure community conducive for business and leisure is provided,’’ Akinjide stated. Recently, President Goodluck Jonathan also inaugurated two phases of the Abuja Water Treatment
Plants at the Lower Usuma Dam, Bwari, to boost water supply in the FCT. Speaking shortly after the inauguration, the Minister of FCT, Sen. Bala Mohammed, said the plants had the capacity to treat 20 million litres of water per hour. In the same vein, the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, said the Federal Executive Council had approved the borrowing of 170 million dollars from the French Development Agency to boost electricity supply in the FCT. “The loan, which is usually given on e x c e p t i o n a l l y concessionary grounds by the French Government to very friendly countries, and in this instance when the French President visited, the two leaders accepted the need for this loan, which is to support the power infrastructure in Abuja,’’ Maku said. While the efforts of the government are recognised, stakeholders want the government to evolve workable approach to address all the challenges faced by FCT residents. (NAN)
Opinion WHEN Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi was dropped from the federal cabinet a few weeks ago, the consensus was that he was one of the best ministers in the Federal Executive Council and that competence was sacrificed on the alter of politics. Even the sports media, notorious for its caustic pen and for being the albatross of more than one minister, praised Abdullahi for bringing stability to the sector and as the best minister of sports Nigeria had had in a while. Nothing best describes the affection of the sports community for Abdullahi than the soppy headlines, ‘Thank you, Abdullahi,’ ‘Bowing out with pride’, and the likes, which became common in the days after his sack. I worked with Mallam Abdullahi for more than two years, first in Youth Development and later in Sports, so I think I know what makes the man tick. I know that the adulation that followed his exit from the FEC was well earned and well deserved. I know too what it cost Mr. Abdullahi to follow the narrow path to build a reputation as a competent manager of men and resources. It is essential to tell the Abdullahi story, it is a story which suggests that Nigeria is redeemable, that in a society where mediocrity is often celebrated, there could be competent, honest and detribalized folks in government. I first met him in 2008 in Lagos where I was the editor of a magazine and he a Commissioner for education in Kwara, becoming famous for radical reforms. After interviewing him, I left with the impression that he was very knowledgeable and cut
No Thanks To Abdullahi out for greater things. The next time we met was in July 2011 when I was invited to be part of his team soon after he was appointed Minister of Youth Development. That began the journey with him, at the end of which I have come to admire him deeply as an innately good man imbued with rare qualities. Abdullahi is a handworker who has a single-minded pursuit of results. No matter how difficult or complex the matter was he didn’t let go until it was resolved to his satisfaction. And he is not easily satisfied. Not with mediocrity. Not with a job half-done. I recall his first task in sports. It was to find peace in the troubled football sector, where factions and litigations were crippling the administration of the beautiful game. The sector was so crisis ridden that our senior national team, the Super Eagles had failed to qualify for the 2012 Nations Cup in Gabon/ Equatorial Guinea. Some of the parties quarreled with the election that brought in the current board of the FA; others faulted the change of name from NFA to NFF. Others were annoyed over some indeterminable issues, but very angry nonetheless. The FA board led by Aminu Maigari was clearly distracted by the numerous court cases and increasing number of parties spoiling for a fight. Abdullahi knew that achieving peace and stability was essential in creating the right policy environment for sports development. Without it, all efforts would be tantamount to fetching water with a basket. So he went about it, setting up meeting after meeting, sitting down with

one aggrieved person and the other. At a point, I felt it was a wasted effort and it was impossible to achieve any kind of rapprochement among the numerous aggrieved parties. First, they were so many and secondly, and perhaps more important, it seemed the
take on difficult tasks defined the ‘ministeralship’ of Mallam Abdullahi. He is very modest too and does not live above his means. I was a bit taken aback when as a newly appointed minister of Youth Development; he was busy looking for a rented
assistants that the job was temporary, which would come to an end someday. But that does not mean he does not like the fine things of life. He does. His suits are often dapper and his babariga, well cut. It is just that he would not steal or misappropriate funds to acquire these things. However, like he often said,

parties thrived in a crisis environment. And their demands were numerous, some ridiculous, others irreconcilable with any genuine effort for peace. But Abdullahi worked at it, and after several exhaustive meetings, soothing big egos, made the parties to agree to a comprehensive peace deal. This open-minded nature and willingness to

Yet this is the same country we hear that some ministers spend billions on air travel, with a chartered jet at their beck and call. “But of all the good qualities of the Mallam, what I admire most about him is his knack for being confident in his own skin. He was never tired of saying that his first job in life was as a bus conductor. being poor does not indicate integrity, just as being wealthy does not mean one is a thief. Unbelievable as it may seem, I know that as minister, he relied heavily on funds from his businesses in Ilorin- a farm and digital photography studio, among others – to supplement his living expenses, which ballooned when he became minister. For Abdullahi, work came first. And, boy, was he good at it? You bet! With a degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos, several leadership courses across the globe, Abdullahi crowned his education with a master ’s (he made a distinction) in Development Studies from the University of Sussex. So he seemed
well prepared for the leadership roles he has played since 2003 when he left journalism. In each of this position, whether as special assistant, commissioner for education or double-barreled minister, he served with distinction, initiating policies and implementing them with passion. But of all the good qualities of the Mallam, what I admire most about him is his knack for being confident in his own skin. He was never tired of saying that his first job in life was as a bus conductor. He talked too about the humble beginning of his parents, a tailor father who supplemented the income of his family doing odd jobs, and a mother who was a petty trader. Even more, he didn’t mind or shy away from visiting poorer relatives in their houses with his assistants in tow. Abdullahi seemed so sure of himself and was never ashamed of his past or the background that produced him. That’s probably why he didn’t mind playing football every other Saturday with his assistants, cook, drivers, security details and mobile policemen attached to him. Real hard football, in which there’s no distinction between cook and minister. It is the same attitude he had in his appointments, and nominations for government boards. It was about what the nominee or appointee could offer, not where they came from or the faith they professed. It is not surprising then that all his special assistants are Christians from the south. When I asked Abdullahi, what shaped his philosophy and why he has turned out the way he has, he said his life was shaped by his belief in Islam and the upbringing given to him by his parents, who though poor instilled in him the ideals of Omoluabi, Yoruba for a person of integrity, a person of excellent character who is loyal and true to himself. I think the media got it wrong in their adulation of Abdullahi; all thanks should go to his parents who produced such a fine man, an Omoluabi.

Exploiting Jonathan’s excessive humility and misconstruing his profoundly gentle mien for weakness, top politicians like Nyanko, driven by desperate bid for power return to the North in 2015, are making inflammatory statements, campable of igniting inter-tribal war and endangering peace and security in the country.
Nyanko’s Vomit And National Security IN a letter to the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) Governor Nyanko of Adamawa State alleged that President Jonathan, being on Easterner, was using the excuse of Boko Haram to kill innocent Northerners. He said Boko Haram is a phanthom organisation and that Jonathan is only replicating the killing of Northern political elites of 15 January 1966 which he said was done by Easterners. Meanwhile, Detectives from Force Headquarters last week, grilled Nyanko for four hours over those allegations. It was gathered that the interrogation of this former Chief of Naval Staff was the first of the session as he is expected to show proof of his allegations. The areas said to have been concentrated on by the Detectives were those of the Federal Government genocide to reduce the voting population of the North, allegation of Boko Haram terrorism and herdsmen attacks and killing which the governor alleged to be a project pursued by the government for political purposes. Earlier, at a Security Council Meeting held at the presidency last week, Nyanko was cautioned on his irresponsible outburst. Governor Babangida Aliu of Niger State stressed the need for leaders and indeed State governors to desist from making statements that could make the Boko Haram insurgents feel they are reigning and thereby further aggravating an already bad situation. Of a truth, a careful
examination shows that Nyanko’s letter has multidimensional implications. The first is a revelation of the amount of disrespect he has for President Jonathan and the contempt he holds him. He does not appear to see Jonathan as the leader of Nigeria who, irrespective of political differences deserves to be respected. Will Nyanko tolerate any of the Local Government Chairmen in his State who relates to him the way he does to Jonathan? The second objective is to use the instrumentality of that letter to make Jonathan politically unacceptable and unmarketable in the North in view of the 2015 elections. He hopes that by poisoning the minds of Northern elites, Jonathan’s electoral fortunes would have immensely dwindled. Thirdly, he hopes that by his unguarded, reckless and irresponsible inflammatory statements, he would have prepared the ground for the desecration of our national symbol and identity, and in the process prepare a regime of lawlessness. This regime of lawlessness, in Nyanko’s calculation, is expected to crystalise in yet another ground or platform for progrom against the Ibos living in the North, including other Southerners. If Nyanko is not simply out to cause confusion and ignite inter-tribal war, he would have been restrained by the fact that Boko Haram started their operations by killing hundreds of Christians in churches, and over 90% of those Christians, were Southerners
Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State
living in the North. Boko Haram has since it started its murderous escapades in the North desecrated Christians places of worship, killed hundreds of Southern traders on trade mission to the North. Over 50 women traders from the Yoruba West were massacred at Boko Haram check point in Maiduguri sometime ago. Who and where are the socalled Northern elites being targeted by Boko Haram. How many of them have been killed? Where are the apostles of dogs and baboons. How can the mindless killings of farmers in Benue Plateau and Nasarawa by Fulani herdsmen be said to be Jonathan’s project to reduce the voting population of the North. Are all Northern farmers members of Nyanko’s APC that
Jonathan would want them eliminated to procure political advantages? This is madness at its peak. Nyanko must be compelled to prove his allegations. The truth of the matter is that our enemies are with us. Those who want the country to look ungovernable are dining with Jonathan on the same table. How are the Boko Haram members getting their arms which indeed are highly expensive. Who is financing their operations and giving them logistics supports. Is it by sheer coincidence the terrorist group has become more deadly now that 2015 beckons. Jonathan once said some Boko Haram supporters were in his cabinet. What is he doing to them?
Those who link Boko Haram operations to the 2015 election have very solid reasons. Those who say their actions have political motives are further bolstered in their beliefs by the kind of statements coming from Nyanko. We have to advise that we need peace. The unfortunate thing is that those who have taken so much from the country are those fanning the embers of discord and crisis. Nyanko rose to the position of Chief of Naval Staff, a member of Armed Force Ruling Council, a Military Governor and for the past seven years, a civilian governor of Adamawa State. What else does he want? Why does he want to destroy a country from which he has eaten so much! I must confess that I am not very comfortable with Jonathan’s excessive humility and profound gentlemaness. People are taking advantage. Perhaps the president does not appreciate the weight of the power he wields. If he does, there should have been a comprehensive state of emergency in the three Northern States of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa with all the democratic structures suspended. Obasanjo did it in Plateau and Ekiti States and got positive results. The conditions in Yobe, Adamawa and Borno are worst than what we had in Ekiti and Plateau. President Jonathan needs to take densive action and allow the military to go all out to battle Boko Haram. State of
emergency and democracy cannot co-exist. I don’t expect that president Jonathan should succumb to blackmail by abandoning his ambition in order to appease the North. This country does not belong to the Nyankos who feel Nigeria should remain ungovernable as long as a southerner is at the helm of its affairs. As observed earlier, Nyanko’s investigation should be very thorough. His letter is nothing short of treasonable felony. Inciting the North against the president is indeed treasonable I don’t see any immunity that can shield him from prosecution. He has to be made to know that there are laws which must be applied irrespective of who is involved. When he was in PDP, he together with four others asked Jonathan to drop his ambition as a condition for their remaining in the party. When that failed, he defected to APC. In furtherance of his anti-Jonathan, anti-Ibo, and anti-South mission, he is now lobbying the North to go to war. This man needs to be taught a lesson-that being a governor does not screen him from the clutches of law. Exploiting Jonathan’s excessive humility and misconstruing his profoundly gentle mien for weakness, top politicians like Nyanko, driven by desperate bid for power return to the North in 2015, are making inflammatory statements, campable of igniting intertribal war and endangering peace and security in the country.
Midweek Magazine I can remember Basket mouth’s joke when he said that the first time he smoked marijuana or igbo as the Nigerian Youths call it, he got home, took his TV remote, sat on his TV set and started pressing his chair. Trust me when I tell you, that is what marijuana can do to a man, it turns your world upside down. Marijuana is a mood altering or “psychoactive drug”. It comes from he dried leaves and flowering tops of the Indian hemp plant (cannabis Sativa). This drug is a hallucinogen, a substance which distorts how the mind perceives the world we live in. the main chemical that creates this distortion is THC (decta -9 – tetrahydrocannabionol). The membranes of certain nerve cells in the brain contain protein receptors that bind to THC. Once the THC is in place, it initiates a series of cellular reactions that lead to the ‘high’ that users experience when they smoke marijuana. This psychoactive effects known as “high’ as usually noticeable and its ranges from increasing creativity mystical experiences, to increased senses. Marijuana can be taken in three ways; by eating, brewed as tea, or smoked which is the popular way of using marijuana. After alcohol, marijuana is the most popular form of recreational drug in recent times. Over 50 per cent of the adult population admits to having smoked marijuana. A survey conducted in 2007 found that 14.4 million
individuals in the United States alone had smoked marijuana at least once during the previous month. In a 2010 survey, 17.4 million people in the United States said they had used marijuana in the past month. Marijuana is so popular that an estimated one out of every three people in the world has tried it. Over the years, there have been medical and scientific findings trying to prove that marijuana has benefits as a medicine. Marijuana has been indicated through research to prevent and cure the following health disorder, such as chemotherapy induced vomiting, Alzheimer’s, digestive disorder, insomnia, nervous disorders and gonorrhea. On March 17, 1999, the U.S Institute of Medicine (IOM) said that smoking marijuana has benefits for the terminally ill. They suggested that cannabinoids can be useful in treating pain, nausea and appetite loss caused by advanced cancer and AIDS. They also suggested that Dtetrahydrocannabinol (THC) also acts as a sedative and reduces anxiety, which in itself may have therapeutic effects. One of the first therapeutic uses of marijuana in the modern era has been its effects in suppressing nausea suffered by anticancer chemotherapy patients. An Institute of Medicine study in 1999 found that marijuana provided “modestly effective” relief for nerve pain, stimulated appetite for people with AIDS, and helped chemotherapy patients control nausea
Marijuana: and vomiting. But yet, there is no true evidence that marijuana actually works. The true evidence is that, when a person smokes marijuana various gases and tiny particles are produced including cancer-causing substances such as benzopyrene and benzanthracene which has thrice the concentration found in tobacco. Smoking one marijuana leaves airway deposits of 4 times as much cancercausing tar as one tobacco cigarette. This drug is also suspected to cause lung disease, emphysema, chronic users have the risk of developing acute and chronic bronchitis, asthma, sinus problems and airway injury. Just minutes after smoking marijuana, a person experiences immediate effects such as; increased heart rate, lessened coordination and balance, and a “dreamy” unreal state of mind. Studies have shown that it takes just about 30 to 60 minutes for a person to begin experiencing effects of marijuana after he or she has smoked it. When eaten, the effects takes longer time to appear. These effects may wear off in two to three hours or take longer depending on how much the user takes. Excessive intake of marijuana may cause mental effects which include depression, flashbacks, aggressive feelings, anxiety leading to panic, confusion, delusions, hallucinations, resulting from toxic psychosis, psychotic disorder (insanity),

delirium, and depersonalization. When a person tolerance builds up, marijuana can lead users to consume stronger to achieve the same high. SHORT TERM EFFECTS OF MARIJUANA Marijuana can cause short-term such as; Increased heat rate: studies shown that marijuana increases the smoker’s heart rate. Doctors have said that this can be especially dangerous for people who suffer from heart problems. In fact, in the first hour of smoking marijuana, the user has a high risk of having a heart attack. Impaired memory: using this addictive drug can cause short-term memory problems. The users can also have problems with learning new things. The PET brain scan of chronic users shows that marijuana may continue to impact in the brain three or more days after use particularly affecting motor coordination learning and memory. D i f f i c u l t y concentrating: users of marijuana may have difficulty concentrating on a task. Red eyes: marijuana users, moments after smoking the drug, develops red eyes. Agitation and paranoia: many people experience agitation and paranoia as a result of smoking marijuana. Anxiety: according to experts, one of the commonest side effects

people get after smoking marijuana is panic attacks or anxiety. A study by researchers in Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital indicated a strong link between heavy marijuana smoking and depression. Those who used it daily ran seven times the risk of suffering depressing and

Sleepiness: users of marijuana may feel the need to sleep after smoking it. Euphoric and relaxed: just after minute of smoking marijuana, a person feels relaxed and excited, but this only last for a short time. Elevated confidence: marijuana gives a person a feeling, the confidence,

certain period of time can sult in the development various types of mental sorders. In more severe ses, users have been dmitted to psychiatric spitals. In 1998, the then SU (New South Wales) ealth Minister Dr. ndrew Reshauge ported that between 1993 nd 1997, hospitals perienced an almost 10 r cent in the number of nnabis - dependent atients suffering from ug - induced psychotic ness. arijuana use may cause ncer: some researchers
believe that smoking of marijuana may increase the risk of developing cancers such as lung, oral, and neck cancers. Research shows that the smoke from marijuana contains more carcinogens and tar than the smoke from tobacco. A recent study by the British Lung Foundation
suggested that people who smoke marijuana are about 20 times more prone to developing lung cancer than people who smoke tobacco cigarettes. Another study which was published in the Cancer Prevention Research Journal stated that long term marijuana users have up to 61 percent risk of developing head and neck cancers than nonmarijuana users. Negative effects on the male sperm: it is strongly believed that marijuana use can have a
negative effect on male sperm and testosterone production. There is evidence that the sperm produced by marijuana users may have biochemical or structural defects. While some believe that marijuana increases sexual desire and performance, the long-term effects are; loss of sex-drive, impotency, and infertility. Reduces the body’s ability to fight illness: marijuana users may also experience impairment of immune functions. It lowers the body’s capacity to fight infection and disease. In 1989, US study revealed that THC in marijuana reduces the activity of cells that destroy foreign substances. This counters the claim that marijuana has therapeutic benefits for AIDS and cancer patients. Respiratory problems: the frequent smokers of marijuana tends to suffer from heavy coughing and wheezing and may worsen the symptoms of bronchitis. They also experience airways that become partially blocked as a result of the smoke they constantly inhale into them. Another respiratory problem that comes as a result of marijuana smoking is a high risk of suffering from infections of the lung. Marijuana smokers after a period of time, also suffer from too much production of Phlegm. Non-chalant attitude: the user marijuana may display a non-chalant
attitude to life, school, sport, personal hygiene, personal appearance and various activities. Ageing of the brain: marijuana causes ageing of the brain which is responsible for shortterm memory (hippocampus). Professor of pharmacology at Oxford University in the young people who are heavy marijuana smokers are equal to that of 70-90 year olds. Also chronic users may experience what is referred to as ‘a motivational syndrome’ apathy and loss of motivation. Schizophrenia: studies conducted in Sweden of more than 50,000 people over a 15-year period revealed that those who has used marijuana 50 times or more were 6 times more likely to develop schizophrenia than non users. Marijuana may also trigger schizophrenia in those already predisposed to the illness. A 1990 study of schizophrenia and substance Abuse found that 42 percent of schizophrenics had used marijuana in their lifetime. MARIJUANA CAN CAUSE ABNORMAL CELL Division: smoking of marijuana may cause abnormal cell division which leads to severe hereditary defects. A pregnant woman who regularly smokes marijuana may give birth prematurely to an undersized, underweight baby studies also revealed that children
whose mothers smoked marijuana just before or during pregnancy had ten times the risk of developing leukemia (cancer of the bone marrow). Over the last ten years, many children of marijuana users have been born with reduced initiative and lessened abilities to concentrate and pursue life goals. According to moffit Malouf and Thompson in Drug Precipice (1998), studies conducted in laboratories suggest that marijuana is able to change the character of genes in cells or chromosomes. This changes may be mutagenic, that is, can be passed on to future generation. In Nigeria today, marijuana has gained prominence among the youths and adults alike. You may wonder that despite the awareness on the danger of this drug, the drug is still being brazenly sold and used. In spite of the spirited efforts by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to check the sales and consumption of this drug demand for marijuana is on the rise. In the past, marijuana rarely used by the youths. People who smoke marijuana only did it in hiding where they would not be seen. But today, reverse is the case as marijuana is openly consumed in beer parlours, night clubs, mallam joints and even in musical concerts. Gone are the days when marijuana smokers hide under the cover of darkness to get high on weed. Nowadays, they have no need to hide their
odious habit from the public. Marijuana has also crept into schools as students of secondary schools and higher institutions smoke this drug with reckless abandon. Some members of Law Enforcement agencies who are supposed to check the use of this drug allegedly join in to get high. Our musicians and celebrities who are supposed to act as role models to the young one’s publicly admits to smoking marijuana. To make it worst, marijuana is sold for a cheap price. And since it is cheap, it is ready available for anyone interesting in giving it a try. The drug is sold for merely N50, while the special type commonly known as skunk is sold for N100. you may want to ask me, what is skunk and how is it special? Skunk consists of a small amounts of cocaine and dry leaves. It is a drug for those who feels that the normal igbo does not make them high anymore. Skunk is highly addictive and could easily make a person run mad than the normal weed. There is also the biggest size known as ‘jumbo’ or ‘Baba 70’. This is 20 wraps of igbo wrapped in a newspaper. Some smokers even mix marijuana with gin or brandy in a concoction known as ‘Monkey tail’. At present, marijuana is the most abused drug in Nigeria. It is so because it can grown effortlessly anywhere and it is very cheap. In fact, smoking of marijuana is so rampant that, if it is not addressed soon and properly. It will become a culture, a way of life in our country.
“Gone are the days when marijuana smokers hide under the cover of darkness to get high on weed. Nowadays, they have no need to hide their odious habit from the public. Marijuana has also crept into schools as students of secondary schools and higher institutions smoke this drug with reckless abandon.”
For Achive
FEW weeks ago, two students from the University of Ibadan U.I pursuing their P.H.D thesis came and asked me who was the first Oba of Lagos and who were the original owners of Lagos? I referred them to the publication by Chief O.E.I Aimieuwu in Nigeria Magazine No. 103 December 1969/ February 1970, pages 624-627 as abridged here. 1 told them that Oba Orhogbua who reigned in Benin (1550-1578) waged wars along the West Coast of Africa from Benin City to the territory of Dahomey now known as (Republic of Benin). He conquered the territory and appointed a military administrator known as Isidahome to administer the territory. The place became known as modem Dahomey after centuries. Oba Orhogbua tried to find a resting place along the Coast and finally arrived in Lagos and found the place swampy but moving further, he discovered a sandy beach around Lagos. The Oba and his soldiers built a camp (Eko) on the sandy beach. “Eko” is a Benin word meaning Camp. Many Yoruba historians agree that the early Yoruba settlers from the interior never went beyond Iddo in the mainland of Lagos. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, colonists from Benin founded the part of Lagos and Badagry”. H.Ling Roth in his book Great Benin two of its (Benin) colonists are Badagry and Lagos. The name ‘Eko’ is a reminder that the original settlers in Lagos Island in the area around Isaleko where Oba’s palace is situated were the Benins, it is a fact not disputable. Other Benin names that showed Benin influence in Lagos were very significant “Bajulaiye” a chieftaincy title in Lagos, is a corruption of “Bazuaye” a Benin chief that accompany Aisikpa to Lagos, “Ode — Iddo” or Iddo is corruption of Benin phrase “Ode-Edo” which was used to point towards the mainland as road leading to Benin”. The dress is like the traditional Benin chiefs in Benin as they are descendants of Benin chiefs who settled in Lagos. Some historians have been quoting extracts from Notices of Lagos by J.B. Wood and History of Nigeria by Sir Allan Burns to support their claims that Ashipa the first Oba of Lagos was a Yoruba prince. The oral tradition which J.B. Wood and Sir Allan Bums based their conclusion on the tribe of Aisikpa (Ashipa) cannot be regarded as reliable historical information. According to R.E. Bradbury in his book The Benin Kingdom and the EdoSpeaking People of South — Western Nigeria” Oba Orhogbua made Lagos “his headquarters about the middle of the 16 century”. Oba Orhogbua was educated in one of the Portuguese colonial schools and he could speak, read and write the Portuguese language. Oba Orhogbua left Lagos for Benin when he heard the rumour that his son had been made the Oba of Benin. When he reached Benin, he discovered that his son had not been crowned Oba. Instead of recalling his troops from Lagos to Benin, Oba Orhogbua sent his grand son Aisikpa (the Yoruba now call him Ashipa) to rule Lagos and to be the commander in chief of the forces in Lagos. Aisikpa was the title specially given to the grandson of Oba Orhogbua and it is a contraction of the Benin phrase “Aisikpahienvbore” which means the town will not be deserted by us” it would have been unreasonable for him to have sent a foreigner to Lagos to rule the territory in view of the strategic importance of the town as sailing port. Aisikpa (Ashipa) was appointed the ruler of Lagos by the Oba of Benin Royal family. B.E. Bradbury says that Oba of Lagos confirmed this to some extent by Lagos traditional (administrative sources) ‘it is not the usual practice for a colonial power to appoint one of its citizens of its colony the colonial governor of that territory. It was understood by us that the original natives of Lagos have been singing this songs in the presence of their Obas for centuries. Nature Medicine DEHYDRATION is simply water shortage in the body: it means the body does not have sufficient water to carry out its physiological processes required to sustain life. Therefore, dehydration can kill. One consequence of dehydration is that toxic wastes are retained in the body since there is inadequate water to expel them. Invariably, there is a harmful toxic build-up in the body. Incase you don’t know, solid wastes in the body are one of these harmful substances. Without enough water, the body finds it difficult to eliminate these wastes resulting in constipation. Therefore be informed that when you suffer from frequent constipation, don’t rush to take a laxative or purgative. Check if your water intake is adequate, to start with. The problem may lie there. Usually, a toxic waste build-up is accompanied by body acidity which in itself is a favourable medium for the growth of bacteria, virus, fungi and other diseasecausing micro-organisms. All these developments go to show that once there is a dysfunction in the body, an unfavourable condition is created for triggering off other health problems. Also, dehydration results in the high viscosity of the blood. In ordinary language, this is saying that insufficient water intake makes your blood to be thick. Impliedly, your blood circulation is impaired while your blood’s ability to transport oxygen to all parts of the body is hampered. Don’t forget that already your blood

Effects Of Dehydration circulation has been inhibited by body acidity due to a toxic waste build-up arising from poor water intake. Therefore, what you now have in your hands is double health jeopardy. With your blood circulation compromised and oxygen

delivery to your body impaired, you will discover that you begin to experience body aches and pains. If you are a person pre-disposed to self-medication, you may start taking pain-killers. Yet, all you need is water which will not only de-acidify the body, thin the blood and improve your blood circulation but will also eliminate all the aches and pains in your body caused by dehydration.
efficiently and effectively without leaving behind side effects, adverse toxic reactions-or further health complications as is now the case. Furthermore, dehydration can lead to a dry parched mouth and poor salivation. The aftermath of this situation is that your mouth becomes a storehouse of germs. Water helps salivation, miniaturization of the mouth and the control of
requiring no costly, sophisticated medical equipment. Also, dehydration maybe responsible for your dry, wrinkly and drab skin configuration. Of course, as the medical books tell us, a dry skin itches and irritates making you scratch it-until it bleeds, sometimes. At this stage, the skin wound may become cross-infected. In other words, a complication has occurred
See, prevention is not only better than cure, authentic medicine requires that a medic addresses the root cause of a sickness in addition to managing the complicative effects of the root cause. Additionally, dehydration can affect the vision. How? It results in poor moisturization of the eyes. When this occurs, the cornea and lens cannot achieve their optimum elasticity body weight as well as visual curvature. Hence, their refractive indexes are affected. Poor eye focusing results accompanied by defective vision, whether long or short sight is involved. At this juncture, let me reveal this secret to you. Your eyes itch and are irritated sometimes after spending prolonged hours working at a computer terminal. The
“...Don’t ignore an advice to drink water regularly when a health-care giver prescribes the remedy for your aches and pains. Medicine is not about expensive sophisticated drugs but about simple therapies that work efficiently and effectively without leaving behind side effects, adverse toxic reactionsor further health complications as is now the case.”
reason for this is that your eyes dry up due to poor moisturization caused by not blinking your eyes frequently. While you are before a computer, all eyes blink naturally blink 15 times a minutes. But during a computer work out, this natural blinking process is disturbed by your behaviour of staring at the computer screen. Hence, the eyes are less lubricated by water/ moisture. They become dry, itchy and irritated as well as lose their abilities to focus and see well. This is not all. Dehydration can trigger a rise in cholesterol in your blood in acute conditions. Normal blood level of cholesterol ranges from 150250 mg/100cm of blood. Well, it may equally interest you to know that your blood also thickens, circulation is hampered and oxygen delivery in the body is compromised when there is elevated cholesterol in your blood due to dehydration. Some scientists theorize that the presence of an abnormal rise in blood cholesterol following dehydration is a defence mechanism by the body to prevent loss of water since there is a shortage of it in the body. Finally, dehydration has other effects. It slows down your rate of metabolism. This implies that your energy output becomes low. You become weak and prone to physical fatigue at daytime and, so, your work suffers, all because of water which is available everywhere. Also, dehydration gives rise to short-memory lapses, mental confusion, my facial pain, muscle cramps, headache and rapid heartbeat or palpitation. Dizziness is similarly, sometimes, attributable to dehydration. What is the way out of dehydration? Simply, it is drinking adequate water daily. On the average, an adult needs about eight glasses of water each day. Drop that bottle of soft drink and beer!! Drink water, instead.

Riches Of The World
An Illusion
LISTEN to this message of the Supreme Lord “It will be easy to thread the head of a camel into the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God”. Richness as stated above will be analysed into three categories for the sake of clarity. There is no specific definition of richness but here we are talking based on the undisputed categorical pronouncement of the supreme God, as stated above — Read that again to get it right and digest it after reading to be able to reach for the essence of this message. An adage says, “A madman picks everything on the ground. So don’t pick everything you see on the ground-translation — don’t look for money at all costs — this is common in today’s hard struggle to survive with a staggering 85 percent of the world population, caught up in this virus — money at all cost. R1CNESS THROUGH ONES OWN SWEAT: This challenging statement is direct and must be directly achieved otherwise one is a thief; you may accept or not. Here we have two areas to look into. Those employed and the employers, Businessmen and women of any category. How do you earn your daily living? Our father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come: GIVE US THIS DAY, OUR DAILY BREAD…? These categories of people are very rare. They suffer from the common hands of the majority of cheaters and oppressors. They live average life and prone to tolerance, patience, forbearance, humble, fearful, never in a hurry about life, considerate and fear of God. They are always being cheated, denied of their
rights and seen as unwise or uncivilized. They hardly get to the top because they are always thrown out from time due to their ruggedness in insisting to do things conscientiously from start to finish. Some of these gentlemen and women could be found amongst the Civil Servant, Businessmen, Teachers, the Armed forces personnel of the forties, fifties and down to 1960 just before our independence after which things began to fall apart to this present day of multiple unrest and corruption to the marrow of almost all Nigerians including our dear clergymen and women. A person of this category must be humble and live by his own examples. He does not say, “do what I say and not what I do, but do what I say and do’: If you question most of our clergymen in their affluent life they live today in the mist of their congregation, the answer is “Do what I say and not what 1 do”. That is to say that you don’t have to imitate your superior other than accept what he tells you. This one idea gives room to open corruption and transgression of the laws of God and nature. “Do unto others what you want others to do unto you”, Majority of the poor class belong to this category who go after their daily bread. Same category of workers in the civil servant live by their pay packet and the little support from their wife. So also to the business class who will do their business with minimum profit and fear of God at heart and not maximum profit that leads to the present day inflation and cut throat market prices in all market scenes. A person in this category is never greedy, inconsiderate, and ungrateful to God for giving him something for his daily bread. People in this category are very rare. In this category, you
will find people who will build just one bungalow for 10, 15, to 20 years. A friend, Reverend Pastor Eyo (late) built his three bedroom bungalow from 1967 — 1982 when he took his ordination ceremony and opening of that three bedroom bungalow.
earth because he was contented in that position. In that last minute, he achieved being a Pastor, a Reverend and finally moved into his three bedroom apartment with all glory and joy. People of this nature are very rare in the present day of human nature.
That day was his happiest day because his ordination goes with the opening of his house built within 15 good years. That’s a man of God expressing his joy after 15 years of constant trials and failures to build one bungalow just to hide his head and his family at old age. Compare this one act to what you see today with our clergymen. Reverend Pastor Eyo in his eighties had no bicycle nor a car but trekked all through his days and always remained healthy until his last day on
The reverse being the case for now because many are called but just few are chosen. To live by ones only means is highly spiritual and not material. It requires some austerities which most people are not prepared to bear. Most people go for the shortest possible short-cut to make do with richness. What does it benefit a man to gain the whole world and loose his soul. Don’t loose your soul for material gain. 2. RICHNESS THROUGH HOOK AND

The Characteristics Of Bride Of Christ (8) HER DISPOSITION PROPERLY REPRESENTS HER HUSBAND BIRDS of a feather, they say, flock together. Every groom would want to marry a bride that will property represent his personality. No groom is proud of a wife that is always disgracing him in public. A groom would ensure that the bride he has chosen is one that will be faithful to him, not one that will flirt or get pregnant for someone else. Decency is an attribute every wise groom searches for in a prospective bride. A bride that is pregnant outside marriage is not ready for the marriage. A good bride prepares herself to carry only the seed of her husband; not the seed of someone else. A bride that is pregnant for someone that is not her husband has a strange seed inside her. Such indecency will certainly cost the prospective bride her marriage. As a bride of Christ waiting for the marriage feast, what fruit are you carrying? Is it the fruit of the spirit or that of the flesh? Does your disposition properly represent Christ? Do people see you and conclude immediately that you are a fit and proper bride of Christ or do they see you and doubt your claim? You are known by the fruit you bear, whether you are a prepared bride of Christ or a child of the devil. A prepared bride of Christ will have the fruit of the Spirit which is: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance (Galatians 5:2223). An unprepared bride will have the fruit of the flesh which are: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying, murders, drunkenness, revelling, and such like (Galatians 5:19-21). Recently, my wife, who is from the northern part of Nigeria, re-echoed to me something she told me years back when she first came to Benin. She told me that when she first came to Benin, she
thought there were no Christians in Benin. This was because she did not see any marked difference between Christians and unbelievers. Taking an analytical look at her observation, I find that she made this conclusion based on the attitude of Southern Christians to the practice of Christianity. A lot of Christians in the South have not made any sacrifice for the gospel’s sake and so their Christianity is not dogged. It is a true saying that you value only something that cost you much. When you get something of value too easily, there is a tendency for you to take that thing for granted. True salvation is like circumcision; it ought to be painful. If your salvation experience is not a painful experience, then you will not be rugged in your Christianity. Circumcision is what separates the boys from the men. No wonder God insisted the Israelites must be circumcised before they enter into the Promised Land. True salvation is painful but gainful. For your salvation to be authentic, an integral part of you must be cut away. Old friendship, old lifestyle, old haircut, old music, and the likes must be cut away. These old practices may not necessarily be sinful, but yet you must do away with them to create a clear distinction between you, who has been saved, and the unbeliever who is unsaved. The mark of separation must be clear for all to see. If people cannot easily distinguish you from an unbeliever, then your salvation is in doubt. People claim to be saved these days, and yet, one year after their salvation, there is still no obvious change in their character They still maintain the same association, visit the same places, speak in the same way, and do the same things they used to do. In years past, Christians used to be easily identified by their bible which was always in their hands. But these days, people carry handsets instead of bibles. Christians hold worldly literatures instead of Christian literatures. In those days, the sacrifice you made was a check on your

They were persecuted, yet they persisted in following Christ. Stephen prayed for those who were stoning him. Indeed, there is nothing as sweet as when you suffer for Christ’s sake. My dear reader, you must make your decision today. Your husband, the Lord Jesus Christ, watches you from above. He is searching to find that mark that will distinguish you as His bride. willing to let go everything that puts your salvation and sanctification in doubt. It may be painful at the beginning, but eventually, the gains of the sacrifice will wipe out the pains of the sacrifice. I invite you today to a sacrificial walk with God; a walk where your services for God is motivated by love and not gain. A walk where you do not count anything as important except the things that pertain to the Kingdom. Until you step up to this level of Christianity, your preparedness for the marriage feast of the lamb is in doubt.

Police Fire Shots As Aid Truck Is Attacked
AAB BAREEK, AFGHANISTAN - Afghan police fired gunshots into the air yesterday to disperse villagers who fought police and aid workers distributing emergency supplies near the remote site of a deadly landslide, witnesses said. Aid agencies have rushed tons of supplies to more than 4,000 displaced by the landslide in Aab Bareek, a village in the Argo district of Badakhshan in the northeast of the country, that was partially destroyed when the side of mountain collapsed on Friday. UN Chief In S/Sudan, To Urge For Peace JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN U.N. Secretary-General Ban Kimoon is visiting South Sudan to urge both sides involved in the country’s conflict to abide by a peace deal they signed in January, a U.N. spokeswoman said yesterday. Ban’s visit comes four days after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir leading to Kiir’s announcement that he is ready for talks with the rebel leader, former Vice President Riek Machar. But government troops over the weekend attacked the rebelheld city of Bentiu, the capital of Unity state and the rebel stronghold of Nasir, in Upper Nile state. Ban will call on the participants in South Sudan’s war to implement the cease-fire agreement they signed on Jan. 23. Neither side has honored the peace deal. South Sudan has been rocked by violence since December, when Kiir accused Machar of attempting a coup. Thousands of people are believed to have been killed and 1 million people have fled their homes. The violence has taken on an ethnic dimension between Kiir’s Dinka ethnic group and Machar’s Nuer tribe leading to fears of genocide. The U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday it is seeing a sharp increase in the number of refugees fleeing South Sudan’s violence to western Ethiopia. Over the past 72 hours some 11,000 people have crossed into the Ethiopian town of Burubley along Baro River, which divides the two countries, after South Sudan government forces captured a key rebel stronghold of Nasir, said U.N. refugee agency spokesman Adrian Edwards. Many more refugees are massed on the South Sudanese side of the border, waiting to cross the river on one of the few small ferry boats, Edwards told reporters yesterday in Geneva.
enough. Compounding the situation, residents of neighboring poor villages have walked to the refugee center in a bid to get food and other rations. Dozens of people tried to
board an aid truck on Tuesday, and then attacked two police officers who attempted to restore calm, a Reuters witness said. A further eight police joined their colleagues,
beating them the villagers back with the butts of their rifles. “Up to 80 people on a nearby hill pelted the police with stones and the police fired into the air for about a
minute,” the witness said. In a tense standoff, a man armed with a pistol approached the aid truck. “Four police were pointing their AK47s at him, and one rushed at him and twisted his arm and grabbed his gun,” the witness said.
After decades of conflict, guns are commonplace in Afghanistan. Hundreds of villagers were buried in up to 50 meters of mud and debris on Friday in the worst natural disaster to hit the country in a decade.
ZAGREB - Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic sacked the finance minister yesterday over a property deal he said had hurt the state budget, but economists said Slavko Linic’s dismissal would have no impact on fiscal policy. Croatia, the European Union’s newest member, is struggling to exit a recession now into its sixth year but is also under orders from Brussels to slash a budget deficit expected to hit 4.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) this year. “Minister Linic does not enjoy my confidence any longer and I will propose that he be replaced by his deputy, Boris Lalovac,” Milanovic told reporters. Milanovic said Linic was politically responsible for the finance ministry’s purchase of property from a struggling firm that was later found to be worth at least 20 million Croatian kunas ($3.66 million) less than the ministry had paid for it.
“It is possible there was no (ill) intention. Mistakes happen but then it should be checked who was responsible for the mistake ... I waited two months but the minister took no action and I am not satisfied with his explanation,” Milanovic said. “I don’t think the removal of Linic will have a negative impact on Croatia’s (eurobond) issuing plans as Lalovac was Linic’s deputy,” said Zrinka Zivkovic Matijevic, an analyst at Raiffeisenbank. “Also, Croatia’s fiscal policy is under monitoring from Brussels that provides rather firm fiscal guidelines.” The former Yugoslav republic is tentatively planning to issue a eurobond in May or June. The market expects an issue worth about 1.5 billion euros. Croatia, whose economy is forecast to contract modestly this year, is currently in the EU’s Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP), a tool Brussels uses to enforce fiscal discipline in member states. Zagreb has to cut its budget gap to below three percent of GDP by the end of 2016. Linic is the sixth minister to leave the Social Democrat-led government since it took over in late 2011 and the first to be sacked. Relations between Milanovic and Linic had long been strained, according to local media. Linic’s sacking follows the recent resignation of Croatia’s tax department chief who said the finance ministry had obstructed her work. Croatia’s anti-corruption police said on Monday they were investigating documents related to the property purchase that has toppled Linic. ($1 = 5.4714 Croatian Kunas)

30 Pro-Russian Insurgents Killed
DONETSK, UKRAINE — Ukraine’s Interior Minister said yesterday that 30 proRussian insurgents were killed during operations to expunge anti-government forces in and near a city in the east, while the Kiev authorities attempted to reassert control over the southern region of Odessa by appointing a new governor there. Arsen Avakov said on his Facebook page yesterday that four government troops also died and 20 were injured during fighting in Slovyansk. Gunbattles took place at various positions around the city Monday in what has proven the most ambitious government effort to date to quell unrest in the mainly Russian-speaking east. Avakov said Monday that pro-Russia forces in Slovyansk, a city of 125,000, were deploying large-caliber weapons and mortars in the region and there were injured
on both sides. Government troops were facing about 800 insurgents, he said. In Donetsk, a major city some 120 kilometers south of Slovyansk, international flights from the local airport were suspended Tuesday. The airport said on its website that the cancellations followed a government order. Ukraine is facing its worst crisis in decades as the polarized nation of 46 million tries to decide whether to look toward Europe, as its western regions want to do, or improve ties with Russia, which is favored by the many Russianspeakers in the east. Dozens of government offices have been seized, either by armed insurgents or anti-government crowds, over the past several weeks. The central government attempted to re-establish control Tuesday over the predominantly Russianspeaking Black Sea region of
Odessa, where 46 people died after fighting and a fire broke out between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian forces late on Friday. In a statement published on the president’s website, the Kiev authorities announced they were firing the acting governor and replacing him with member of parliament Ihor Palytsya. On Saturday, the police chief of the city was fired, mere hours after he had called for calm. While no reasons were given for the latest change, the interim Kiev government has previously wielded its authority to appoint regional governors as a way of reasserting control over rebellious regions in the country’s east. The concern that Odessa could be the next region to fall to pro-Russian forces — particularly after 67 people detained in the Friday fighting were released by the police under pressure from an
angry crowd — has sparked concern in Kiev, which said it was sending an elite national guard force to the city on Monday. The goals of the pro-Russian insurgency are ostensibly broader powers of autonomy for the region, but some insurgents do favor separatism. Leaders of the antigovernment movement say they plan to hold a referendum on autonomy for eastern regions on May 11, although visible preparations for the vote have to date been virtually negligible. The Russian Foreign Ministry has put the blame for the unrest squarely on Kiev, which it says “stubbornly continues to wage war against the people of its own country.” The ministry has urged what it called the “Kiev organizers of the terror” to pull back their troops from the east and hold peaceful negotiations to resolve the crisis.

Brutal Child Murders Spark Outrage In Turkey
ANKARA - Several brutal murders of children have sparked outrage across Turkey, prompting calls to bring back the death penalty and leading the government to stiffen sentences for child killers.
Turkey abolished capital punishment more than a decade ago as part of Ankara’s bid to enter the European Union, but calls to bring it back have multiplied after the gruesome killings. Yusuf Yigitalp, deputy leader of the Islamic Saadet (Felicity) Party, said scrapping the death penalty had sparked a surge in crimes and bringing it back was a “must”. “Today capital punishment is applied in Western countries. enshrining it in its constitution two years later. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that reintroducing capital punishment was impossible if Turkey wanted to join the bloc and the government would instead work to ensure full-life sentences for child murders. “These incidents are a kind of capital offence,” Erdogan said on Friday. “An aggravated life sentence is on our agenda even if we cannot reinstate (the death penalty).” Aggravated murder in Turkey means full-life imprisonment. The calls to reintroduce state executions come after several gruesome child murders. In one, a six-year-old girl was stabbed, tortured and set on fire, according to preliminary police findings reported in local media. The suspected murderer, described only as 20-year-old S.A., reportedly confessed to the crime, saying he had lured the girl into his car by saying they were going for a picnic before tying her up and attacking her. “I closed my eyes and stabbed her. She fell down. I poured gasoline on her and lit it with a match. She started to scream,” he was quoted as saying by the Hurriyet daily. In another shocking killing earlier in the month, a nineyear-old boy was found raped and strangled in the eastern province of Kars.

Hash Oil Explosions Rise With Legalized Marijuana DENVER, USA - The opening months of Colorado’s first-in-the-nation recreational marijuana industry have seen a rise in fiery explosions and injuries as pot users try to make the drug’s intoxicating oil in crude home-based laboratories. Since Jan. 1, when sales began, the state’s only certified adult burn center has treated 10 people with serious injuries they suffered while making hash oil, compared with 11 in 2013 and one in 2012. Law enforcement and fire officials, meanwhile, are grappling with how to respond, as the questionable legality of the process has made it difficult to punish amateur chemists. Some prosecutors are charging them with felonies, while others say hash oil production is protected under a provision of the new legal pot law. “These today are the meth labs of the ’90s. We have to change our thinking and what we’re looking for,” said police Sgt. Pat Long in Thornton, a Denver suburb where officers were puzzled by the city’s first hash oil explosion in January. Hash oil is typically made by packing the castoff leaves and stems of pot plants into a pipe and pouring highly flammable butane through it. The concoction is heated to make the potent oil for far cheaper than it can be purchased in stores. The golden mixture can be up to 80 percent THC, marijuana’s intoxicating chemical, and devotees say one or two drops can produce a more euphoric high than an entire joint. It can
also be infused into baked goods or vaporized. Without proper ventilation, butane fumes can linger. All it takes is a spark of static electricity to ignite a room. Firefighters in the state have raced to at least 31 butane hash oil explosions this year, compared with 11 last year, according to the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, an agency that has only recently started tallying cases. The data represents only reported and confirmed cases, and the actual number of explosions could be higher, said Kevin Wong, an intelligence analyst for the agency. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Wong said. The organization has started training police and firefighters on how to spot the signs of a hash oil explosion. After the Thornton blast, officers found a charred home littered with bottles of butane. They
were perplexed, which highlighted the need for more training, Long said. In recent years, there have been dozens of explosions and injuries in other states where residents can get access to the plant through medical marijuana systems, including California, Washington state and Oregon. In Washington state, where home pot growing isn’t allowed, officials were so concerned about the dangers of producing marijuana extracts for sale in state-licensed shops that they require licensed producers to have an expensive ventilation system. Colorado marijuana businesses are allowed to manufacture hash oil using butane, but with strict rules. Colorado’s pot laws allow adults 21 and over to grow up to six plants at home and cooks often use their
own plants to affordably make hash oil in their kitchens or garages. as a result, explosions have happened primarily on private property. There were at least five blasts in one week alone last month. In one case, two children had to be rescued from their burning suburban Denver townhome after their father and his girlfriend caused a blast while making the extract. In that case, authorities charged the homeowner with arson and child abuse, a common punishment for home cooks whose recipes ended in disaster. Denver, where at least eight explosions have occurred, banned home hash oil production under a portion of the building code that prohibits “creating an unsafe environment.”
mentally ill. The latest incident happened late in the morning at the Guangzhou Railway Station, city police said on their microblog. Officers arrived as passengers were being hacked, and shot and subdued a male suspect with a knife after he failed to respond to a police warning, the statement said. Following initial confusion about the number of attackers, police said there was only one perpetrator. It said the person was receiving treatment in a hospital, but gave no further details. Police said six people were injured and taken to a hospital, not

claimed to have been in the practice for long. And Jesus said to him, Go and sell your belongings, give the money to the poor and come back to me. This gentleman who wanted eternal life regretted for going to Jesus, walked away and never returned as directed by Jesus. Most of us are in this category, assuming that we are pure and ever qualified to go to the kingdom of God any time and any day. First of all, no one is a crook, but we all go to church or the mosque or temple. We can access ourselves with the Ten Commandments. What is your score — ten over ten or what have you. Please let the answer be your New Year resolution to make progress in becoming pure in Heart. Definitely the pure in heart, shall see God, but it is not through specialization, imagination, assumption, imposition, false ego, position, pastorship, Reverendship, Bishopship, Arch-Bishopship, professing, visionary — No, One must develop the spiritual not material qualities of a saintly ambassador who has a qualified genuine spiritual guide to lead one to the spiritual abode. No one can go to the spiritual world nor become pure in Heart just on his own. The science to go back to the kingdom of God is not taught in schools and higher schools because in todays world, science and technology leads the world, directs the world at the expense of the human material slavery that has entangled about eighty five percent of the world population thereby given room to various forms of riches through hook and crook means in this World of illusion that we are living in, The world was made to move on a circular basis but due to poor consciousness of the world leaders which has been extended to the followers, the world seem to be in a pendulum state — moving up down and up again and never revolving as nature predicted. This is due to so much deviation from the laws of nature. Three ways one can be
free from hook and crook ways of becoming rich. 1. To live within your income 2. To knock and it shall be opened unto you. 3. To seek help from friends, relations and well-wishers. A borrower or beggar is better than a thief If you are in business, sell with minimum profit and the world will be a better place to live. Don’t be Mr. Shylock who believes in cutthroat buying and selling. Be Mr. Anthonio who gives out loan to people without asking for interest as it is common in todays attitude of lending money to people. When you give, work, assist, recommend, recognize etc without sinister intension, it is twice blessed. When you give, work, assists, recommend with some expectation, it becomes direct or indirect extortion. In the nursery rhymes, it is stated that, “There was a crooked man, and he worked a crooked mile. He found a crooked six pence against a crooked stile, He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse and they all lived together in a crooked house. Nigerians from top of the ladder to the bottom must learn how not to be crooked in all our dealings because we will be bound to live in a crooked house which will never be recognized no matter how beautiful it is decorated. 3. RICHES GOTTEN THROUGH BLOODSHED In Bethman Bible, it is stated, “Whosoever sheddeth man’s blood by man shall his blood be shed”. Ill-gotten wealth through bloodshed is neither direct nor indirect. Direct bloodshed is done through armed robbery, terrorism, invasion, piracy etc. These are aimed at becoming richer and expansion of one’s territory. The resultant effect of all these richness by individuals and countries., through various means of bloodshed remains unhealthy, madness, un-natural, uncalled-for, uncivilized, unfriendly, untraditional and unwholesome. When God created the three worlds, there was neither clash nor crashes, which showed that the world

It has been clearly stated that the rate presently has greatly increased as this inferno becomes world-wide. Becoming rich and richer nor richest becomes a yardstick to one’s status quo. In the past, there was no mad rush to become rich, it is rather slow and steady. But today in the

All these means leads to avoiding poverty at

This world is Hell and people prefer to be rich here in hell no matter the way one makes it. What happens to the King and Lazarus. Finally “it will be easier for you to tread the head of a camel into the eyes of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God” HOLY BIBLE QUOTE. Once upon a time, a poor man being inquisitive about his situation confronted a rich man to know how he was able to be a rich man. The rich man sat him down to a full analysis of how he has manipulated, toiled, maneuvered, his ways to become a rich man. This poor man managed to hold his breath after which he declared “It is better for a poor man to remain poor, than trail the horrific ways to become rich -quite incredible”. Yes, so it is to all types of riches. No form of riches comes through the straight path.

Education
THE insurance industry recorded a lot of activities in 2013. Some of the activities relate to the inability of many insurance companies to produce International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS)-compliant statements of accounts and the enforcement of “No Premium No Cover’’ policy. However, the efforts of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria’s (CIIN) to promote insurance education in the country reached a crescendo in 2013. Mr Joseph Oba, CIIN’s Director of Communications, said that plans to promote insurance education started in 2007 with visits of the CIIN Governing Council to the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Federal Ministry of Education. Cynics are often tempted to ask questions as to the need to restructure insurance education in Nigeria. However, insurance experts habitually insist that tangible efforts should be made to promote insurance education in the country. This is because available statistics show that insurance penetration in Nigeria is very low, compared to Ghana and South Africa in spite of the huge population of Nigeria which is over 160 million. Also, the contribution of the insurance industry to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is less than one per cent. With the recent addition of 14 Fellows and 158 Associates, the number of registered members of the CIIN is now 210 Fellows and 2, 641 Associates. But there is high public apathy towards taking on insurance policies in the country. Mr Jero Akanbi, a retired civil servant, took a life insurance policy in 1980 and paid the calculated premium of N20 religiously for 20 years. However, in 2000, when he disengaged from the policy, he was paid a paltry sum of N5,000 and he was highly exasperated. Akanbi vowed never to have anything to do with insurance again in spite of explanations that the payment was due to his maintenance of the same premium, the nonreview of the policy and the effects of inflation. Investigations, however,
Promoting Insurance Education In NIgeria revealed that Akanbi never read the insurance document before taking up the policy. “My friend, who is an insurance broker, brought it to my office. After his explanations, l felt it was good and asked him to sign me on. “I only signed the areas where I was required to append my signature. I never read through the documents as l trusted the insurance broker who is my friend,” he said. Akanbi has since embarked on a damaging campaign. He has been discouraging family members, friends and others from taking on insurance policies. The man’s plight aptly reflects the dilemma of many Nigerians who have similar tales of woes to narrate about insurance. “Such anomalies are what the CIIN sets out to correct with its current focus on insurance education,’’ Mr Fatai Lawal, the CIIN President said. However, Dr Wole Adetimehin, the immediatepast President CIIN, said that insurance was a contract. He underscored the need for anyone who intended to take on an insurance policy to read and understand the content of the insurance documents. “In a contract document, the terms and conditions are scrutinised critically whenever disputes arise; that is what insurance companies look out for when paying claims. “Many Nigerians are always in a hurry. Most people do not take things that concerned them seriously. “Also, many people do not want to read; that is the problem,” he said. CIIN is targeting the youth in its bid to check public apathy towards insurance, while tackling misconceptions about insurance and deepening its penetration in the country. “We want the younger generation to recognise the benefits of insurance, while helping to educate their parents on the need to take up one policy or the other,” Mr Sunny Adeda, a former CIIN President, said.

curriculum. “The institute also ensured that more tertiary institutions run accredited courses in insurance. “These informed the Governing Council’s visits to the NUC and Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja,” Adeda said. Beyond that, Oba said that officials from the Federal Ministry of Education came to the CIIN Office in Lagos and inspected its facilities, syllabus and the structure of its examinations. “The efforts of all the past presidents of the CIIN paid off, as the Federal Ministry of Education has recognised our insurance certificate.
Secondary School curriculum and this year, insurance will be taken as part of the West African School Certificate Examinations,” he said. To address factors such as dearth of insurance teachers and insurance textbooks, the CIIN is encouraging insurance professionals to take up teaching appointments in tertiary institutions. The institute has also published a textbook on insurance — “Insurance for Secondary Schools’’ — for senior secondary schools. The book was presented to the public during the CIIN’s Graduation and Fellowship Awards Ceremony in Lagos in 2013.
education in Nigeria which, he said, was one of the cardinal programmes of the CIIN’s Governing Council. “It will also herald a new dawn in insurance education by stimulating the consciousness of secondary school students and our future leaders concerning insurance,” he said. Besides, the CIIN has been visiting tertiary institutions and during the visits, the institute donated books to institutions offering insurance courses. Some of the beneficiaries of the books’ donation include University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Redeemers’ University, Lagos State
Polytechnic, Ibadan Polytechnic, Federal Polytechnic, Offa, and Federal Polytechnic, Bori. Others are Kwara State University, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Imo State University, Bayelsa State University, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Enugu State University Technology and Institute of Management of Technology (IMT), Enugu. Lawal said that the books’ donation was one of the
institute’s strategies aimed at promoting insurance education in the country. “The only way we can stimulate the penetration of insurance in this country is to get more people involved as crusaders for insurance,” he said. Lawal described that the donation of books to tertiary institutions nationwide as a landmark commitment to achieving the institute’s agenda for the growth of insurance in the country. Industry watchers commended the CIIN for its efforts to boost insurance education in Nigeria, saying that such efforts will surely engender the development of the insurance industry in the country.

Inconsolable Suarez Breaks Down In Floods Of Tears WHEN Steven Gerrard broke down in tears following Liverpool’s remarkable 3-2 win over Manchester City in April, the way his emotions poured to the surface spoke volumes as to how much the pursuit of the Premier League title meant to the club. But after surrendering a 30 lead to draw 3-3 with Crystal Palace on Monday night, there were tears of a different kind, and they revealed the crushing realisation that the title will not be heading to Liverpool at the end of the season. After Dwight Gayle scored two goals in the last minute to give Palace a point, Luis Suarez broke down in torrents of tears and hid his face as he failed to contain his bitter disappointment. In fact, the Uruguayan striker kept his face hidden for the whole of the time he walked off the pitch as he refused to let the world see how pain-stricken he was. Captain Gerrard knew though, and quickly sought out the striker to console him and even push a TV camera away from Suarez. Strangely enough, the point means Liverpool go top of
the league, but they are only one point above Manchester City, who have two games remaining to Liverpool’s one. Having equalled the Premier League record of 31 goals in a 38-game season, this would have been the perfect night for Suarez, but for Gayle’s most unlikely intervention. Instead he ended it displaying one of the most naked shows of heartwrenching disappointment ever seen in the English game.
ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger expressed his satisfaction for winning the last home game of the season but says the Gunners will have to improve their injury record.Tags: Arsenal, West, Bromwich, Albion, Premier, League, Arsene, Wenger Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he was left with “mixed feelings” after watching the Gunners secure a 17th successive season in the Champions League but fail to maintain a title push. Everton’s 3-2 home defeat to Manchester City on Saturday secured another top four finish for Arsenal, but Wenger said he remained frustrated that his side’s challenge for Premier League glory had faded. “There are mixed feelings because we were 128 days top of the league and mixed feelings because you feel at the most important period of the season, in March and April, we didn’t have our players
available,” he told Arsenal Player, reflecting on injuries to the likes of Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott. “As well [I feel] pride because we are the only team now in the last 18 seasons who has finished in the top four. Nobody else did it. If you look across Europe, not many others did it. That’s a sign of consistency, commitment and quality of work.” Meanwhile, defender Per Metesacker has said he believes Arsenal have to play their final Premier League game of the season at Norwich with full intensity, even though their focus has now switched to the FA Cup final against Hull later this month. Ahead of a game that could be crucial to the Canaries, who are deep in relegation trouble and need Sunderland to lose at home on Wednesday to have any

Palace Draw A ‘Killer Blow’ LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers conceded the Premier League title to Manchester City after his side surrendered a three-goal lead and had to settle for a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. While Liverpool will still the game and we didn’t do that, have an outside chance of so it is a massive advantage now clinching the title on the final for Manchester City.” Rodgers told media in his postweekend of the season, Rodgers said he believed City would be match interviews that Liverpool champions of England for the players were “devastated” and second time in three years after “crushed” by the loss, his team collapsed late on in a particularly due to the fashion in which it happened. dramatic game. “It’s very disappointing. chance of escaping, the Germany international said: “When you switch off it’s hard to switch on again — so we want to keep the focus and intensity high.”
- Rodgers
Rodgers accepted his team’s defensive flaws caught up with them in a frantic finale at Selhurst Park, but tried to put a positive gloss on a night that left some of his players in tears at the final whistle. “For us, it has been an outstanding season up to now,” he said. “For us to get to 81 points is a great achievement. We are obviously disappointed right now, but we will go again. We have a great game at Anfield [against Newcastle] now to finish the season, and we will keep looking to build and develop what we are doing. “The dressing room is very quiet because, for 75 minutes, we put in an outstanding performance. The quality of our football, the penetration, the relentlessness of our attack was fantastic for 75 minutes. Maybe we got carried away, thinking we could get more than three goals, but the important thing was to win and we didn’t do that. “We are very disappointed how we conceded the three goals. It was real poor defending that cost us there. They showed great spirit to come back into it, but the comfort we had in the game and the quality we showed to get to 3-0 up... you have
to manage the game better than that.” In the wild finish that saw Palace score three goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation time, Liverpool were not able to turn the tide in front of a raucous home crowd at Selhurst Park. “You have to think clearly under pressure,” said Rodgers. “But in that crazy spell we didn’t and we know we need to be better in that area. It was about dealing with the situation. You need that calmness and control to see the game through, and we didn’t manage it.” The title dream now seems to be a longshot for Liverpool. But they are mathematically alive still, needing Manchester City to drop points in one of their remaining two games. “Of course the impossible can become possible. We’ve all seen what happened in Spain this weekend, when all three of the sides dropped points but City are now the clear favourites,” said Rodgers. “When we reflect on it at the end of the season, we’ll see it as an outstanding season. But that doesn’t take away the pain now because this was a game we should have won.”
the summer and insisted he will go with “no regrets” after deciding he could not line up for another Premier League club. He will make his 299th and penultimate appearance for United against Hull on Tuesday as he brings down the curtain on a trophy-laden period. Vidic, a 2006 signing from Spartak Moscow, enjoyed seven years of success before enduring a difficult final season but said his memories are entirely positive. “I have no regrets,” he told national newspapers. “I’ve given this club 100 percent and my time at this club will always rank as the best part of my career.

I’ve got so many great memories. I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League. “I’ve played for the greatest manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] and I have
UEFA are trying to hand down the biggest fine in the history of football to Manchester City due to breaking Financial Fair Play regulations, reports claim. According to reports in both France and the UK, UEFA want to fine City £50m and limit their Champions League squad next season to 21 players instead of the usual 25. City are believed to be unhappy with the severity of their punishment but only have until Friday to agree a deal with European football’s governing body. City have been negotiating with the Club Financial Control Body but the decision may now how to go to arbitration. The Daily Telegraph reports: “The parties are so far apart that City are in danger of being the only one of nine clubs facing punishment who choose to fight on beyond Friday’s deadline and take their chances with the CFCB’s adjudicatory chamber.” No club is expected to be excluded from the Champions League for breaching the spending limits, the maximum possible sanction. Both Manchester City and PSG are believed to have fallen foul of the FFP rules with sponsorship deals related to each clubs’ owners. Abu Dhabi-owned City have a £40 million-a-year deal with Etihad Airways, while Qatarowned PSG have a back-dated deal with the Qatar Tourist Authority which is worth up to £165 million a year. Clubs can lose up to £37million over the last two years under UEFA’s rules. City made losses of £97.9million in 2012 and £51.6million last year, but were able to write off some sums spent on facilities, youth development and a number of other items.

as a Juve player. They finished seventh in the two years before he arrived as the aftershocks of calciopoli were still being felt at the club. Now they are Italy’s dominant force again after three exceptional seasons. The natural next step would be to restore the club as a European force and supporters would have been hoping to do it with Conte at the helm. “This is only the second year that we’re taking part in Europe and I think we’ve
grown a lot, we got into the semi finals of the Europa league and I think deserved to go to the final,” said Conte. “But we need to be patient. The fans see us winning in Italy and want to return to being a big player in Europe, but it’s not going to be easy. “I am a Juventus fan, I was even when I was going around the country to work as a coach and learn. I am now that I am the Juventus coach and will be in future. Juventus is my family.”
GRANADA scored a late equaliser to take a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad, who failed to nail down a Europa League place for next season. Odion Ighalo found the back of the net in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the Liga clash at Anoeta to cancel out Carlos Vela’s opener on 73 minutes and snatch a point for the visitors. The result means Sociedad must wait to secure a place in Europe’s second-tier competition next season, with Villarreal still in with a shout of finishing sixth. Sociedad are on 58 points with two games remaining, while Villarreal are five points back in seventh, also with two to play. Sociedad have another chance to claim sixth place against Athletic Bilbao in the Basque derby on Sunday, but should they lose that and Villarreal beat Rayo Vallecano a day earlier, it will come down to a straight shoot-out between the two sides on the final day of the season. In San Sebastian, both teams were reduced to 10 men after Granada’s Recio and Sociedad’s Mikel Gonzalez were sent off in separate incidents within two minutes of each other early in the second half.
REAL MADRIDs Italian coach is expecting all three teams in the Liga title race to keep fighting and is hoping the Catalans do his side a favour Real Madrid coach Carlo
Ancelotti has insisted that Barcelona will go out to beat Atletico Madrid on the final day of the season. All three sides are still in the Liga title race, with Diego Simeone’s side needing four points from their final two games to win the Primera Division. Real Madrid need to win their final three games and will be hoping that Barcelona do them a favour when they tackle Atleti at Camp Nou and Ancelotti is certain that the Catalans will not take it easy. “I’m sure that Barcelona will want to win,” he said at a press conference. “Barca will give their all against Atletico. They have always played like and and will do so all the same. “It was an amazing end to the season because Levante had a very good match against Atletico despite playing for nothing as did Valencia, who were in the
same sitution, against us. “This is good for the league. We will all fight until the final minute. These three games are in our hands and we must win. “[Wednesday’s game against Valladolid] will be crucial because losing means not winning the league. “Winning is the only option we have. The advantage is with Atletico because they need four points to become champions. We’ll see what happens.” Ancelotti also ruled Gareth Bale out of the trip to Valldolid, but expects Cristiano Ronaldo to feature. “Cristiano is fine, just a little tired. He just took part in training and is available at Valladolid. Carvajal, with slight discomfort, and Bale, who took a knock, are out.”

Barca Will Want To Beat Atletico - Ancelotti
PSG Set Fo Quadruple FFP Sanctions
PARIS Saint-Germain can expect to be hit by a fourpronged punishment when UEFA hands out its first financial fair play (FFP) sanctions later this week, L’Equipe has claimed. France’s main sports daily reported yesterday the French champions have failed to convince European football’s governing body their recently signed contract with the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) is not overvalued. The deal, which brings the club up to 200 million euros a year, thus allowing them to squeeze inside FFP thresholds, has reportedly been valued at only half that amount by UEFA experts. Consequently, UEFA and
PSG have reached agreement on a moratorium which protects the club from any further, immediate sanctions, but does impose upon their owners, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) a number of damaging restrictions. PSG, which boasts Europe’s highest wage bill at 240 million euros, will not be allowed to increase the amount it pays in salaries, and they will have to sell players before being able to spend in the coming transfer window. UEFA will also reportedly ask PSG to limit their transfer activity, allowing them to buy one player at 60 million euros, but forbidding them to break
down that sum to buy two players, for example, at 30 million euros or three at 20 million euros. PSG’s Champions League campaign next season will be hit with Les Parisiens permitted to only name a 21man squad instead of the usual 25. Eight of those players will need to be homegrown, thus restricting coach Laurent Blanc’s options. Furthermore, PSG will have to pay a 60 million euro fine spread over the next three years and reduce their losses to 30 million euros, rather than the 45 million euros stipulated by FFP regulations, by the end of the 2014-15 season.
Vela put the hosts ahead on 78 minutes with an astute finish from Alberto De La Bella’s cutback before substitute Ighalo swooped late on to convert Jeison Murillo’s cross, amid appeals for offside. The point sees 15thplaced Granada move onto 38 points, three above the relegation zone.
Jerome Boateng Banned For Two Games
BAYERN Munich defender Jerome Boateng has been handed a twomatch ban after slapping Hamburg midfielder Kerem Demirbay, the DFB has announced. The Germany international was sent off in the final minutes of Bayern’s 4-1 win at Hamburg on Saturday and club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he would be given a significant fine for his “brainless” action. The DFB disciplinary tribunal has now ruled that he also have to serve a twogame suspension, which will rule him out of Bayern’s final Bundesliga game of the season, against Stuttgart on Saturday, as well as the opening match of next season. However, he remains eligible for the DFB-Pokal final with Borussia Dortmund on May 17 as Bayern seek to defend their trophy. Boateng was the third Bayern player to slap an opponent in the face in recent weeks. Rafinha was sent off in the dying minutes of Bayern’s 3-0 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund on April 12, while France international Franck Ribery escaped punishment when he struck Dani Carvajal in the 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal at the end of the month. Neither player was fined by the club.

How Amir Khan Breathed Fresh Life Into His Stalling Career TO say that Amir Khan’s boxing career was not exactly going the way he would have liked over the last two years would be an understatement. Okay, dodgy scoring and a failed drug test made his world title defeat to Lamont Peterson rather dubious. But it was nonetheless a setback which kicked off a very testing period for the British boxer. LFP Promises Tough Action On Racism
THE Spanish League (LFP) has promised to bring in strict new punishments to deal with racism in domestic football. The issue of racism in La Liga has been highlighted in recent weeks after Barcelona’s Dani Alves picked up and ate a banana thrown at home during a game at Villarreal. A subsequent social media campaign launched by Alves’ Barca and Brazil colleague Neymar has brought the international spotlight onto the Spanish game, with widespread outrage again last weekend when some Atletico Madrid supporters abused Levante’s Papakouli Diop. While the individual who threw the banana at Alves was identified and banned for life by Villarreal before being arrested and charged by local police, and the incident included in the official match report of referee David Fernandez Borbalan, the LFP has yet to take any official action itself. The Spanish League broke its silence on the matter by releasing a statement the day after the Levante-Atletico game condemning all racism and violence in football, insisting the organisation was working with the Spanish government to introduce new punishments for offenders, and also promising to implement a new obligatory training programme to help clubs deal with the issue. “The Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) and in particular, its
Department of Integrity, vociferously condemns any act of discrimination, violence, racism, xenophobia or intolerance in the world of football and sport in general,” the statement said. “In this sense, the LFP warns that it is taking steps, before the [Spanish government’s] AntiViolence Commission in Sport, to introduce sanctions for serious violations of the 2007 antiviolence, xenophobia, racism and intolerance in sport law, against those who have been involved in such incidents over the past few matchdays. In all cases, the LFP will punish this type of behaviour and announces that the prevention of these acts will come in the form of obligatory training courses for all clubs associated with the LFP.” Alves has regularly pointed out that he has been subjected to racist
abuse throughout his 11 years in La Liga, and that previous attempts to draw attention to the issue have fallen mostly on deaf ears. A Primera Division club whose supporters are found guilty of racist abuse can be heavily fined and have their ground closed for subsequent games, however such serious measures have never been taken. Officials [such as Villarreal president Fernando Roig after the recent incident] instead often talk of “isolated incidents” and the “unfairness” of punishing a club for the actions of one individual. The 2013-14 season has seen a number of serious incidents of racism during games. Police took action against two Elche fans who were caught on camera directing racist abuse at Granada defender Allan-Romeo Nyom
Isner Joins Nishikori And Tsonga In Madrid JOHN Isner earned a place in the the tournament, the Australian Second Round second round of the Madrid beating ninth-seeded Dominika Masters with a straight-sets victory over Russia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili. The big-serving American, seeded ninth in the Spanish capital, hit 14 aces on his way to a 7-6(8) 6-4 win - his first on clay this season. “I feel like I competed very well out there and on top of that I felt
like I played well from start to finish,” said Isner. “I played really well in the first set. Had a lot of chances, but I just didn’t capitalise on them. I was able to win a super-close tiebreak. “I served extremely well. When I serve like that, I’m very
this is the right moment,” he told La Nacion.
“After my injury last year, I wanted to prove that I could come back to competitive football and I made it. “I dreamed of ending my career with Inter. Inter is my my home and I’ll try to contribute off the pitch as well as on it. “I’ll be the sporting director a fascinating new challenge. I’m willing to learn.” Zanetti, who joined Inter from Banfield back in 1995, made over 850 appearances for the club, winning five Serie A titles and the Champions League among numerous other trophies.
Zanetti Confirms Retirement INTER skipper Javier Zanetti has confirmed that he will retire at the end of the season. The 40-year-old suffered a serious Achilles injury last season and has found game time hard to come by this term. Club president Erick Thohir claimed last week that the Argentine would hang up his boots at the end of the season and take up a new role with the club, and Zanetti is looking forward to the challenge. “To quit at 40 is a unique sensation. I feel proud of myself,
during a game in last October, while Atletico were fined 10,000 euros by UEFA after racist abuse was aimed at Manchester City youth players during a recent UEFA Youth League game. However the LFP itself has not directly taken action against member clubs who cannot control their fans. In February, a section of Atletico supporters sang “Marcelo is a monkey” at the Real Madrid player after a Copa del Rey game, but there was no official response from either club or the league authorities. There was also no official response when Real Betis defender Paulao publicly called for followers of his own club who abused him during a defeat to local rivals Sevilla last November to be punished — even after FIFA president Sepp Blatter tweeted that he had been “sickened” by the incident.
voluntarily abandoned those plans when Floyd Mayweatherís camp suggested he should keep his schedule clear for a big-money meeting ñ before Floyd opted late on to battle Marcos Maidana instead. All of the above, as you can imagine, did nothing to quell the criticism Khan has endured since the early days of his professional career. Criticism for running his mouth too often ñ which while irritating is commonplace in this sport. Criticism for being heralded by media and promoters alike from day one ñ less understandable, considering how the media and promoters ultimately have to respond to demand, which like the vitriol comes from the fanbase. Unfortunately and least understandable of all, he also endures criticism for having the ënerveí to be BritishPakistani. Of course, the one surefire way to silence that is to do the business between the ropes. Even Khan would surely admit that in the 24 months leading up to May 3, 2014, he simply wasnít doing that. But on the evidence of his performance in defeating Luis Collazo in Las Vegas on a card he expected months beforehand to be headlining, he is finally reacting to the negativity the right way. Against a strong and dangerous opponent, Khan resisted his trademark urge to

tough to beat and it bodes well for me. Number 10 seed Kei Nishikori also won through with a 6-4 6-4 win over Ivan Dodig of Croatia, while 11th seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga found the going a little tougher in a 6-3 4-6 6-3 victory over compatriot Edouard RogerVasselin. “I started well,” said Japan’s Nishikori. “I broke his serve in the first game. He’s not easy to play. He has a great serve and he comes to the net sometimes. “But I played really well. There was just one bad game, on my serve at 3-2 in the second set. Otherwise, it was an almost perfect match.” Tsonga, who took two hours and 10 minutes to beat RogerVasselin, said: “It was a difficult match. I played well in the second set, but I lost my concentration a bit and then it was too late to come back. But in the end I won, and that’s good.” In the women’s draw, Sam Stosur sprung the first upset of
Cibulkova 6-4 6-0. Although Stosur is ranked lower than Cibulkova, she has now won all four of their meetings, the latest victory coming after she went on a run to claim 12 of the last 13 games. There were no problems for the top seeds in action on the opening day though, with Li Na, Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep - two, three and four respectively - all winning through in straight sets.

dive in carelessly. His work was assured and well-rounded. As Sundayís post-fight analysis pointed out, trainer Hunter didnít have to bark at his charge as often as in the Carlos Molina and Diaz fights. When Mayweather was made to work harder than he has in years by Maidana ñ who a prime Amir beat in a thriller in 2010 ñ it gave Khan the opportunity to bounce back from being a castrated Floyd lapdog to staking a serious case for a crack at ëMoneyí by following up his own win with determined words in his press conference. [WATCH THAT HERE] So, finally, we have a positive reaction to adversity from Amir Khan at the top level. That begs further questions: Can he keep it going? Who should he fight next? And, could he seriously be the one to crack the ëMayweather codeí? It looks as though Mayweather-Maidana II may be forthcoming in September, at which point Khan would be observing Ramadan. Itís not inconceivable that Amir could take on a top opponent in the winter before finally sealing the deal to take on Floyd in exactly a yearís time. We looked at possible toplevel Khan foes after he missed out on Mayweather in the below video. And since none of the five we suggested were Luis Collazo, all of them remain viable bouts to bridge Khan between now and the big one: Khanís shift up to welterweight is off to a promising start, though time will tell whether he can become a two-weight world champion. Itís actually a bit of a shame that, of the five boxers highlighted on the video, Broner is going in the opposite direction and looking to assert himself as a lightwelter. He was the scalp which earned Maidana the crack at Mayweather, and I doubt Khan would have much trouble with the insipid ëProblemí. Regardless of who, though, itís important that Khan does fight another serious opponent before he is to potentially challenge Mayweather. The Collazo fight was a great start to his long-overdue revival ñ but the hard work isnít quite over yet. If he can knock off the winner of Shawn Porter and Kell Brook or even gain revenge against Peterson or Garcia, then he like Maidana will have the case he needs to go for the biggest scalp of all.
Bayelsa YSFON Appeals For Sponsorship
YENAGOA - The Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Bayelsa Chapter, on Tuesday appealed to the state government for sponsorship to the International Youth Football Championship in Oslo, Norway. The South-South YSFON’s Vice-President, Mr Kali Gwegwe, told newsmen in Yenagoa that the tournament would hold from July 27 to Aug. 2. Gwegwe said Holmlia SportsKlub of Oslo had already paid the registration fee for the chapter. “But the chapter needs the state government’s help to

Enugu Football Stakeholders Caution Over World Cup Team Selection
FOOTBALL stakeholders in Enugu have cautioned against undue pressure on the Super Eagles technical crew in the selection of players for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Some of the stakeholder who spoke to newsmen yesterday said that people should not manipulate the technical crew or impose any player on them. A director in the Enugu State Ministry of Sports, Mr Edwin Eze, said the call was
vital because football neophytes were trying to put pressure on the technical crew and the football governing body. “This demand is being unleashed on the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and the World Cup team crew. “The NFA is determined to ensure that the team performed well at the Mundial but some people are trying to force players on the technical team.

Nigeria/Venezuela Novelty Match Cancelled
“First, we should understand that the players are selected based on the coaches discretion. “Beside, Nigeria is blessed with players around the globe but not all would represent us at World Cup. “I believe Keshi will do well if he is given a free hand with the World Cup players’ selection,’’ Eze said. The sports director said
that players like Mikel Obi, Godfrey Oboabona, Ramon Azeez and Ejike Uzoenyi to mention but few should not be over looked at the final screening. In his reaction, a former Rangers player, Nwabueze Nwankwo, said it was the technical team’s final list that will prevail. “As a patriotic Nigerian, I nurse the hope of the Super Eagles winning at the summer
World Cup but let’s not forget that experience matters. “Well, the coach knows this because he has played at that level and has coached different national teams,’’ Nwankwo said. Another Rangers former player, Dominic Nwobodo, also said that the call for the recall of the experienced players was okay. “ It will bring out the best in the new players. Energetic and experienced players should be invited for the World Cup,’’ he said.
a mere formality. “We have trained so hard for this match and won’t stop training till we meet them at both away and home because that is the only way we can come out victorious. “Efforts are not just on their physically fitness but also on their psyche and emotions because they are all working together. “A player needs to be stable in these forms so as to be productive and we are doing just that,’’ he said. He, however, said that it was unfortunate that Isaac Success one of his key players, could not make it for the first leg encounter because of the injury he suffered while playing for his club. “Also Kelechi Iheanacho will be absent because he is still representing his club in the current season and hopefully they would be at the return leg,’’ he said. The head coach said that the team would not be deterred by any form of inclement weather. “We all know that Nigerian players are accustomed to any condition and have the ability to survive any condition. “Be it hot or cold, we are prepared to play in it and I assure Nigerians that we will make it,’’ he said. Garba also said that the players had trained on different types of pitches and would not find it difficult to adapt to any type of pitch the Tanzanians would want to take them to. “We have trained on natural grass and Astroturf. We have trained the players to play on different surfaces, so none of it will be a challenge to them when they get to Tanzania. “We are not taking any chances, so, we are equipping ourselves very well for the task ahead,’’ he added.
