A new year, a new start, a new you & a new us! Happy New Year to you all! We are delighted to launch our newly designed newsletter and hope that you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed putting it all together. This new look newsletter has been created with the help and support of NWN Media Ltd who have appointed the Hospice as their charity of the year. Not only is the new look newsletter bigger and more economical to produce but it is also more environmentally friendly. It is printed using 100% recycled paper and it is printed using vegetable oil based ink. We would like your feedback on how it looks, so please get in touch.

Nightingale House Hospice Newsletter 2010 Message from the Executive Director I hope that you and your family had a good Christmas and I would like to send you my sincere best wishes for 2010. The Hospice is happy to be celebrating their 15th anniversary based on Chester Road, Wrexham. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has donated, supported, volunteered and helped the Hospice throughout the years. Your generosity and support have helped us ensure that we are able to provide the best quality care each year. This year we will have to raise £2.4 million just to maintain our current level of services. Your kindness has helped our patients and their families deal with, what can be, a very difficult time in their lives. No matter what size donation we receive I can assure you that every penny counts.

Christmas Wrap Up Well, what an eventful Christmas that was! The Hospice was busy celebrating the festive period with their Christmas Fair, the Carol Concert at Chester Cathedral, the Eaton Hall Carol Concert, Santa’s parade and Christmas Grotto with the live reindeers at Bellis Farm Shop and Garden Centre, our very first Santa Dash in Mold and our annual Light Up A Life service. Thank you to

The shops have done extremely well over the festive season but we now need your support more than ever to re-stock! If you are doing some early spring cleaning and throwing any unwanted items away, particularly furniture and electrical goods – then throw them our way! We have got lots planned for 2010 with our Fundraising calendar full of new exciting events. We are very excited to launch the sponsored Drag Walk which is our first event just for men, there is also ‘lock up your boss’, a sponsored slimathon, not to mention the usual annual events such as our Ladies’ Midnight Walk, Charity Ball, and our Summer and Christmas Fair. The lottery continues to need your support and at £1 a week represents a good way to support everybody who helped, volunteered, attended or who donated any items towards these. You have helped the Hospice raise £50,000.

Light Up A Life On Friday 4th December 2009, the Hospice grounds saw 500 people united in the cold to celebrate ‘Light up a Life’ in memory of dear friends, family members and loved ones. The congregation shared the new lights which illuminated the Hospice grounds, with thanks to the Deputy Mayor of Wrexham, Councillor James Kelly who officially did the ‘switch on’. A further six services in Llangollen, Bala, Mold, Hamner, Connah’s Quay and Corwen also saw large congregations. The

the Charity with an opportunity of winning a cash prize every week. Our weekly first prize of £2,500 is one of the biggest when compared with other local lottery schemes. At Nightingale House Hospice, we are working hard to make your donations go further whilst maintaining the highest standards of service that we can provide. On behalf of everyone at Nightingale House I would like to thank you warmly for your continued support and look forward once again to meeting many of you at one of our events this year.

John Savage Book of Honour was available to view at each of the services, and can now be reviewed in the Nightingale House Hospice reception throughout the year. We would like to give special thanks to Linear Group, Business Support Services for their kind sponsorship of the event including Chris Grunwald (below) the electrician who installed the lights, Cover all Tarpaulins for the donation of the Marquee which held the Books of Honour, the Buckley Singers and Mr Mark Fisher, 2J’s Gardens and Landscape and Bellis Farm Shop and Garden Centre in Holt for the donation of Christmas trees. Light Up A Life alone has helped raise over £31,000 for the Hospice.

It really doesn’t seem like twelve months since the first edition of the newsletter in 2009 but here we are in 2010 having completed another year of providing specialist palliative care to patients and families living in North East Wales and the surrounding areas. The year 2010 will see us celebrate our 15th Anniversary as a hospice on Chester Road, and looking back it is clear that celebrations continue to play an important part of hospice life, some celebrations which you would perhaps not usually associate with hospice care. During the last 15 years, with the support of our local team of registrars we have helped a number of patients and families to share the celebration of family weddings even at the most difficult of times in their lives. One of the weddings held at the Hospice really reinforced to me how central an effective team is to everything we do, and I would like to share this example with you. Being the ‘mother-of-the-bride’ can I’m sure be stressful at any time but when you are unwell and living with a diagnosis of a life limiting illness it can be particularly difficult to feel part of the celebrations. Unless that is, the wedding takes place in the hospice providing your care and support. Step forward Gary and the chaplaincy team, liasing with the family to ensure the details are correct; liasing with the registrar to make sure timings can be quickly accommodated.

The medical team, providing a surprising musical accompaniment, playing viola and organ and fitting in rapid rehearsals around their day-to-day work. The nursing team ensuring that the mother of the bride felt at her best, dressed in her finery and yet still comfortable for the service tucked up in bed. Kim, usually responsible for media and publicity for the hospice turning her hand to wedding photography for the day, not only taking pictures but getting them printed and in an album so that by the end of the very busy day the mother of the bride had many happy memories but also wedding photos of her daughter and her new husband hanging on the wall of her room at the hospice. If you speak to any of the team involved, they would probably say they did very little on the day, that they did only what was needed to make the day as bright and positive an experience as it could be for the patient and her family. At the hospice, what we are able to achieve together is much greater than the sum of the parts we each contribute. Thank you to all our supporters and best wishes to you all for a peaceful year in 2010, please come along and visit us on one of our open days this year the dates are advertised in local press.

Here are some ideas of ways in which you could help! Lose 15lbs through our sponsored slim (see event list on page 11). Raise £15 in your home money cube, these can be collected from the Hospice if there is not one inside this newsletter. Invite 15 friends to a T@3 event in June as part of Go Yellow (see event list on page 12). Spend £15 in one of our Hospice charity shops. Donate 15 items to our charity shops or distribution centre. Nightingale House Hospice Newsletter 2010 Meet Day Care Kay Ryan

OutPatient Services Coordinator Kay started work at the Hospice as a staff nurse on night duty in 2001 and worked part time until 2007. Kay then started a full time 2 year secondment based with the Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Team Ty Madoc in the Maelor Hospital. The aim of the secondment was to streamline the process of the transfer of patients from the acute Maelor Hospital setting to the Hospice. This involved a lot of collaborative work between teams in each setting. Kay produced an information leaflet for patients and their families explaining what they can expect as an In-Patient at Nightingale House.

A short history of Day Care Nightingale House Hospice day care has been part of the Wrexham healthcare community since 1986. Established initially within ‘Nightingale Ward’ at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital under the leadership of Mrs Linda Johnson who remains our current hospice president, day care became a sanctuary for patients living with a diagnosis of a life limiting illness.

Amy organises the crafts, entertainment and day trips for our patients in our Day Care Unit. Amy also helps with the personal care and the well-being of our patients. Amy helps to encourage patients to take up hobbies and activities to distract them from any symptoms or pain they may be feeling.

In 2009 we undertook a review of our day care services. We identified that there are still gaps in the service we provide and opportunities for closer partnership working between the hospice and the local community in the future. In the future we intend to improve integration between our outpatient clinics and our day unit providing a single assessment point for patients and also improving continuity for patients. We are developing a rolling programme of information days for patients to access much earlier following their diagnosis and the flexibility for patients to attend for specific treatments or therapies rather than for a full day care day.

Kay had a brief period back with the Night Team when the secondment finished and has been in post as Out Patient Services Co-ordinator since September 2009. This is a new and exciting post set up following a review of Day Care Services. We aware that there are many more patients who could access the support our services offer but who do not wish to spend a whole day in a Day Care Unit. We are looking at new models of Day Care and how we can offer supportive services to all those who need them.

a therapeutic activities room, a treatment room when needed, complementary therapies room, as well as treatment in physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and out door spaces within the grounds. Change in day care occurs not only in the facilities we offer but also in the care we provide.

The day unit was able to provide information, support and importantly time for patients to share their anxieties and fears as well as their good days with both the staff and volunteers but also with other patients who could understand the lived experience of receiving such a diagnosis.

The purpose of these changes is to respond effectively to patient and family needs, while patients may not want to commit to a regular attendance at the unit they should still be able to access those parts of the service they feel would be of benefit.

The unit brought together a range of expertise to support and care for patients but also provided a valuable opportunity for respite for families in caring roles at home, quite simply a day for them to rest, to relax or to catch up on all the jobs being a full time carer made difficult.

While for those patients and their families who have specific goals to achieve and physical, emotional, social or spiritual needs to be met, day care will still provide the respite, rehabilitation and supportive care we have established within the community.

Since 1986 the day unit has seen many changes one of the most significant of which was moving to the purpose built hospice on Chester Road in 1995. The patients attending the day unit now have the use of a main lounge, a quiet room,

Bag Packing Sessions

In line with funding received from the Wales Council for Voluntary Action a Volunteer Training Event was arranged at the beginning of December at Coedpoeth Resource Centre. Over 100 volunteers attended the session which included the launch of the updated Volunteer Handbook and culminated in a £1000 cheque presentation from Rhos Shop volunteers. A wonderful evening enjoyed by all!

Large numbers of volunteers have taken part in Bag Packing Sessions arranged with Sainsburys and Marks and Spencer’s. The wearing of the distinctive yellow volunteer t-shirts has raised the profile of the volunteer effort and Nightingale House Hospice. Thank you to all who took part!

Christmas Fair and Grotto Despite the appalling weather the Christmas Fair was again a great success. In total 55 volunteers contributed over 200hrs to enable the event to take place. The yearly grotto at Bellis’ Garden Centre proved extremely popular with all and we are grateful to Father Christmas and all his helpers.

Employee Volunteer Scheme A number of local companies have approached the Hospice in the last twelve months and a number of projects have been facilitated as a result. Consequently patient rooms have been decorated and grounds maintenance projects undertaken. We are grateful to all those employers who release employees and to for the projects that they have facilitated.

Volunteer News In the past the packing of the Nightingale House Hospice Newsletter has been undertaken by volunteers working in shifts over a two week period. The new newsletter format means that the packaging and postage will now take place at North Wales Newspapers. I would like to especially thank all those volunteers who have given their time over a number of years to this effort.

Volunteer Vacancies Volunteers are urgently needed in our Brook Street Shop. Monday to Saturday 9.30 – 1pm and 1 – 4pm. Duties include dealing with customers and keeping the shop tidy. Full training will be given. Volunteer are needed at our Distribution Centre at Rhosnesni Lane. Sorters are needed to sort and price donated goods. Monday to Friday 10 – 1pm and 1 – 4pm and Saturdays 10-2pm. Full training will be given. Volunteers are also needed for a collection on Friday 29th January 2010 from 6pm – 8pm for the Crusaders Rugby League Home match.

Message from the Volunteer Coordinator I would like to wish each and every volunteer a Happy New Year and to thank you for all the time and enthusiasm that you contributed in 2009. This year promises to be just as busy as last year with lots of new and innovative ways to volunteer alongside all the events that Nightingale House Hospice is known for. The mission statement remains constant, putting patients at the centre of all that we do and the need for new volunteers to enhance that effort continues. The Volunteer Newsletter is now to be incorporated into the Nightingale House Hospice Newsletter and will be produced every four months. It will contain news, details of future events and volunteer vacancies and keep you up to date with all that is happening at the Hospice. Fundraising in the recent economic climate has not been easy and I would like to thank you, our supporters for all your help last year.

You may also have heard Kim on the radio, as she is a regular visiter at Calon Fm.

Meet Becky Davies Web Designer

Becky is the Hospice’s Web Designer. Becky has been busy designing and creating the new website which will be live in February. Becky has also redesigned the Hospice’s special Ladies’ Midnight Walk site and is about to start working on a new Tribute Funds website.

The Distribution Centre collects and sells donated items including clothes, bric-a-brac, electrical goods, furniture, books, toys and much, much more. The centre will pick up good quality furniture or large items free of charge. Opening hours are Monday Friday 10am – 4pm except now Wednesdays which is 10am – 7.00pm. We would also like to open on Saturday morning. If you could spare a few hours between 10am and 2pm, please let us know. You can contact the centre directly on 01978 262 589.

Rhos Shop Re Opened You can help us to help you, by joining the Nightingale House Hospice Lottery for just £1 a week. Your £1 a week can go a long way, it soon adds up. Playing for 13 weeks (£13) will pay for one patients meals for the day. Playing for 26 weeks, (£26) will help pay for the Hospice gardens to be maintained. Playing for 52 weeks (£52) will pay for a ‘Release’ child bereavement session. Playing for 104 weeks (£104) will sponsor the work of a nurse for one day. With a top of prize of £2,500 per week and a further nine runner up prizes – you can’t afford to miss it – but you’ve got to be in it to win it!

Vicky is responsible for the retail sector of Nightingale House Hospice which includes our distribution centre, Wrexham Brookstreet, Rhos, Cefn Mawr, and Buckley hospice shops. Vicky is the manager of a large team of staff and volunteers working within the retail sector which includes all shop and sorting volunteers, administration volunteers, PAT testing team, distribution centre staff and shop managers. Vicky advises and promotes new ways for our retail sector to increase profits, raise vital funds and generate income for the Hospice.

Roger supervises the day to day running of the distribution centre, along with a strong team of staff and volunteers. Roger supervises the sorting of donated goods, the PAT testing team, rag and waste collections, distribution centre promotional events to raise money and raise the (garden sales, bric a brac sales) and the administration support of the distribution centre. Fundraising Manager

Wendy joined Nightingale House Hospice in June 2009, after working at another hospice for 8 years. As Fundraising Manager, Wendy is responsible for ensuring all campaigns and events are both safe and successful, she is always looking out for new ways in which the local community can support us in order to achieve our challenging budgets, all suggestions are welcome. Wendy manages the Community, Event and Corporate Fundraisers. Wendy also has direct responsibility for Legacies, Tribute funds and In Memoriam giving.

Corporate Fundraiser Rachael is a native Wrexham girl now living in Holt. She has mostly worked in local media but has worked all around the UK. Rachael’s role is two fold. Firstly, to create links with the business community and secondly to raise awareness and educate people about Nightingale House Hospice which will lead to more funding

Corporate Cadbury’s in Chirk astounded even us, when they supplied ¾ tonne of drinking chocolate. This was used at our Santa Dash and Halloween dog walk, and certainly kept away the chill. Thankfully some of it was the low calorie version!

Nightingale House Hospice Newsletter 2010 Hospice Scores Partnership with Crusaders We will also hold a number of special joint fundraising events during the year, including a business luncheon club and a ladies night with a rugby player hosting each table so look out for details of these in future editions of the newsletter.

Bank of America have made a staggering contribution to the hospice, in the form of a car called Ruby that will be used by many departments of the Hospice. They have also volunteered and match funded a number of events.

HSBC have supported many events over 2009, Lorraine Williams, Branch Manager also took part in our abseil down Wrexham Fire Station. They are organising a James Bond themed ball in aid of the Hospice in March (details on page 11).

North West Media have are continuing to help us in 2010 with their fantastic coverage and publicity of our events. M&S Money.com based on the Chester Business Park are supporting us throughout 2010.They have already painted our new shop in Rhos, helped us with our bag packs with volunteers and match funding. They successfully filled two whole crates with donated clothes as part of the ‘Don’t dump, donate’ campaign.

Corus, have officially chosen Nightingale House Hospice as their charity of 2010. The site in Deeside has over 500 employees who will be supporting the Hospice in various ways over the year. Hadlow Edwards generously sponsored our amazing Christmas concert at Chester Cathedral and have attended a number of other events. Chris Bromiley, Financial Consultant, also took part in our Santa Dash...well done Chris. Partner Medwyn Edwards is one of the bosses being ‘locked up’ for us in March.

Support Group News Mold & District raised £8,359 last year through a number of fundraising activities. The chairman of the Mold Support Group, Mr Islwyn Jones would like to extend his ever grateful thanks and compliments to all the members of the support group committee. Buckley Support Group raised £873.25 at their Christmas coffee morning in November 2009. Lavister Support Group raised £500 at their Christmas Coffee Morning where the Puford Hand bell Ringers entertained. Rhos Hospice Shop Support Group have raised £6,000 and are working towards raising a further £4,000.

Nightingale House Hospice Newsletter 2010 Meet the Fundraisers The community fundraisers look after fundraising in the local community including schools, colleges, pubs, shops and some businesses.

Margaret project manages some of the larger community events including Go Yellow, Light up a Life, The Midnight Walk, and the Christmas Fair.

Event Diary 2010

Community Events Jeanette Stokes, volunteer at Buckley Shop raised £559.43 for the Hospice at a live music event at the Academy in Buckley. Church of the Nazarene in Llay held a charity car wash in September and raised £265.00.

Martin and Heather Hough, of Tudor House Café, Caergwrle raised £4,500 by holding a ‘Julius Caesar and the Romans’ themed event which included a slave auction, grand auction, quiz and other gladiator activities.

Jades hair salon in Llangollen held a sponsored head shave raised £4288.68.

Wrexham and District Pantomime Company regulary raise thousands of pounds for local charities. Last year their performance of Dick Whittington raised £3,000 for the Hospice. Wrexham’s Glyndwr University produced their annual Christmas CD for Nightingale House Hospice. Richard Smith and Colin Heron produced the CD using local school choirs. As June approaches we are asking you to start thinking about Go Yellow! Go Yellow is the National Hospice Awareness Campaign promoted throughout the UK to raise vital funds for local Hospices who are in need of financial support. You can get involved in many different ways. You can hold a T@3 party (having a cup of tea at 3pm whilst donating £1 to the Hospice) or you can organise your own thing…why not decorate your office, shop or work space, dress up in funny clothes, hold a raffle, or throw a party - anything – be as creative as you can - as long as it is YELLOW!

Ladies Midnight Walk 2010

Saturday 26th June: Get out your diaries quick! The date of Nightingale House Hospice’s annual Ladies’ Midnight Walk has been set, Saturday 26th June 2010, starting at the usual spot outside Wrexham Guild Hall at the stroke of midnight! All of you lovely ladies are invited to attend the biggest ladies’ night out around and walk a ten-mile, well lit route around Wrexham Town Centre. Participants will get a goody bag, medal and certificate at the end, plus a ‘half way treat’ at the Hospice. Bunny ears and glow sticks will also be on sale on the night – well, it wouldn’t be the same without them!

Unfortunately we cannot mention everybody in this newsletter, as there is simply not enough space, but we do appreciate your generosity and hope that you continue to support us. Every penny counts and we need your help to continue supplying the specialist palliative care at the Hospice. Without you we would not be here.
