ummer, Father’s Day…and hurricane season! No one wants to celebrate it, but we shouldn’t forget it, either. Like the rest of Fort Bend, we turned to our resident roofing expert, Joe Rangel of Ameristar for answers. He’s seen one hurricane season after another come and go. “We’ve been in this community for a long time,” says Joe, “and we’re always happy to provide references to show you the kind of reputation we have. We’re active in the
Better Business Bureau and a proud member of the Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance. We take pride in being a company that our all our friends and neighbors in Fort Bend can count on, whatever the weather brings.” Even though the blue tarps from Ike are long gone, we need to remember the lessons learned. Joe says, “After a hurricane or significant weather, you’ve got a limited amount of time to file a claim with your insurance company for any damage. If you know you’ve got roof damage, don’t put off contacting your local roofing company to get an estimate. And if you can’t tell the condition of your roof, give us a call. We always offer a free, on-site evaluation…all year round.”
UPCLOSE ~ June 2010
After your inspection, you’ll need someone with the experience to navigate the insurance procedures. Don’t settle for a repair if the age and condition of your roof really requires replacement. Ninety percent of the roofs that suffer wind damage also suffer from enough wear and tear to warrant replacement. Ameristar will walk you through the claims process after wind damage on your roof. They’ll inspect your roof, walk through the
claims process, and meet with your insurance adjuster. Ameristar will get it approved and get you what you deserve. Once you have a new roof, you want to be sure it’s backed up by an excellent war-
ranty and is inspected by a quality control inspector. Yes, Ameristar employs a full time Quality Control Inspector that inspects each roof after completion. Joe says, “At Ameristar, we’re fully insured and bonded, we’ve got the documentation to back up our reputation. We
really stand behind the roofing products we use and our guys have passed rigorous training, education, and performance standards. That’s why we’re in the one percent of roofers nationwide that can offer you CertainTeed’s 5 Star Extended Warranties—the gold standard in shingle protection.” You need a roofing company you can count on, not a fair-weather friend. Joe says, “I’ve worked for other roofing companies, but when a couple of friends and I decided to strike out on our own, we knew the kind of business we wanted to run. At Ameristar, our motto ‘we want your recommendation because of our reputation’ really is the bottom line of our business. Our reward is your satisfaction and we always have your best interests in mind. I’ve always believed in getting our customers the roofs they rightfully deserve. When you take pride in doing the right thing for people… every job’s really satisfying.” Ameristar 281-238-4230 3821 F.M. 359 Richmond, TX 77406 www.ameristarroofing.com

And whether you’re floating on your chaise lounge or the kids are playing a game of water polo, you won’t have to worry if your remote control takes a dive…as long as it’s a waterproof remote control. Turn the music up and relax! Does dad have everything he needs for a Father’s Day to remember? Hook him up with the perfect backyard accessory… an outdoor plasma screen from Home Theater Evolutions. With natural color tones, incredible contrast, crisp picture, and wide viewing angles, you’ll enjoy the Astros in high-definition. Have the neighborhood over for a backyard barbeque or enjoy date night with a movie under the stars. The electronics may be high-tech, but the personal service and attention to detail
you’ll find at Home Theater Evolutions is seriously old-school. Richard and Scott have been friends since second grade and they always dreamed of going into the electronics business. Scott works as a firefighter and paramedic with the city of Houston, and Richard worked with electronics in the Air Force…but as soon as they could make it happen, they struck out on their own. Scott says, “We started off in 2003 doing only in-home custom installation of electronic equipment…but more and more of our customers asked our advice on which products to purchase and we decided to expand our business.” This summer will be Home Theater’s first in its new location; it’s conveniently located so that even more customers can experience their straightforward, customer-oriented approach. Richard adds, “When we decided to offer electronics back in 2006, we wanted to handpick every item for quality and value to make life easy for our customers. Scott and I do the free in-home estimates ourselves, and if you have any problems you can deal directly with us. We put everything down on the estimate so you won’t have any surprises or hidden fees. We really want to help people decide on the right products for their home.” “Our location has changed,” Scott adds, “but our focus is the same: helping our customers choose exactly what they need, while working within a budget. When it comes to customer service, we strive for perfection every time.” Home Theater Evolutions 281-980-2300 3157 Highway 6 at Williams Trace www.htevo.com

Step Up For Your Family Sarah Warburton here’s a simple way to cut down on your risk of cardiovascular disease and up your odds of living a long and healthy life…and some men just aren’t doing it. Taking care of your health could be as easy as taking good care of your teeth and gums. Dr. Thomas Lomonte says, “There’s a proven link between a healthy mouth and your total wellness. We’re here to help you get on top of things so you’ll have a strong, healthy smile.” You work hard to support your family, so don’t put your own health on the back burner. Inflammation and bacteria from gum disease contribute to other problems like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and bacterial pneumonia. The good news? Brushing three times a day and flossing daily makes a serious
T
difference. Dr. Lomonte says, “Brushing and flossing not only keeps your teeth clean, but it protects you from harmful bacteria that can make their way into the bloodstream, clogging up the arteries. That’s the link between cardiovascular health and a healthy smile.” You may think it takes a macho man to go to the dentist, but Dr. Lomonte’s practice isn’t about pain…in fact, it’s guaranteed to make you smile! He says, “Checking in with us twice a year can keep little problems from getting out of hand. That’s why some insurance companies insist you keep your regular checkups in order to get coverage for additional procedures. Your total body health starts with good dental habits.” Lots of guys first meet Dr. Lomonte on the fishing circuit, but once they visit his down-to-earth office, they’re hooked! A native Texan who grew up in Beaumont, Dr. Lomonte has been having fun crafting great smiles in our community for the last twenty-eight years. He says, “Like my Dad, I’ve always been good at fixing things... and a dentist has to be able to fix just about anything. I’ve seen people come in
with cracked, discolored, crooked teeth... and after we straighten, whiten, or replace them, our patients feel so much more confident. Changing the state of your teeth really changes your state of mind. We have a great time here…and we aim to keep you smiling!” Thomas M. Lomonte, D.D.S. 281-530-1440 12122 Murphy Rd. ne car is the longest running car in automotive histor y and has had the ver y same name since it rolled out in 1935. Lawenforcement agencies, spor tsmen, and soccer moms all love it and some even call it the unof ficial state car of Texas! Don Kerstetter says, “My favorite car, the one that most strongly identifies the style and versatility of Chevrolet, is our Suburban, and this year we’re celebrating its 75th anniversar y.” For the last thirteen years there’s been a Suburban somewhere in Don’s family. He says, “My sister had two boys four years apart in baseball. When she needed a car that could haul her kids, their friends, and all their sports equipment, I recommended the Suburban. She told me on some Saturdays both boys had games in different towns. They’d get into that car at six in the morning to go from town to town for practices and games…and they’d get home around midnight. I know lots of
families practically live in their cars over the weekend, and the Suburban’s got the space and the flexibility they need.” Where will the summer take your family? Put eight or nine people in the car, tow a boat, and pile your luggage on top of the Suburban and you’ll be ready to hit the road. As the father of two kids, Don knows how to make the most of family time in the car. He says, “I’ve heard a mom say that her car’s the place where she has the best chats with her kids. Our cars play a huge part in our memories, and the Suburban can take you anywhere you want to go—and bring the people you love along with you!” In honor of the huge role the Suburban has played in automotive h i s t o r y, G M ’ s u n v e i l i n g a s p e c i a l limited-edition 75th Anniversar y Diamond Edition Suburban this s u m m e r, a n d o n l y 2 5 7 0 w i l l b e made. Dear Dr. Ahmadi, Thanks to you
and the Lipotuck™ procedure... my most desirable dream has come true! I have always prided myself with fitness and ser ving as a role model for others. … I have always had a small frame (5’4; 128lbs) and loved to dance as well as choreograph dance numbers. I maintained the size 9/10 until age 34, at which time I had my third child and began a job which required me to travel around the world. This travel entailed late night dinners, wine, desserts, and a hectic schedule… it was hard to find the time to exercise. Over the 15 years of traveling and raising my children, I went from a size 9/10 to a size 16/18. I tried hard to lose weight and get in shape by tr ying various diets such as the Atkins Diet, the Hollywood Diet, Weight Watchers, South Beach diet, Jenny Craig, not eating after 7PM, eating 6 small meals a day, eating fruit and veggies only, and the list goes on and on. I also joined a gym and hired a trainer. My weight did not move ver y much
Success. O
for all of the effort that I put into it. Then, I had a Lap-Band procedure done in March 2006. I lost 10 lbs and that was it. I had two adjustments done by the Lap Band surgeon and I still didn’t lose any inches or weight. So last year, I contacted Dr. Ahmadi’s of fice and obtained a copy of the Lipotuck™ DVD…I was so impressed with his skills, education, and talent that I couldn’t believe that he located right here in Sugar Land! It was a miracle to me, the answer to my prayers! After having the Lipotuck™ surger y… I can fit into clothes that I haven’t been able to wear in 10 years! My sagging stomach is now gone. WOW! I have much more confidence… I am showing people my new body and they cannot believe the results! Dr. Ahmadi, this is the happiest time of my life! Thank you again Dr. Ahmadi to you and your staff!

Karen Daniels wning your own business can be the most rewarding and the most challenging of endeavors. You start out with a great idea and a lot of steam and find out that all the behind the scene stuff like taxes, payroll and accounting are robbing you of the joy and the reason you started your own business. What begins as a labor of love, is just labor. What if you could run your company like a big corporation? What if you could have a controller or financial confidant to give you an honest assessment of your financial situation on an ongoing basis? You are still in control; you’re the creative genius and yet your small to mid-market business can perform like a “real business” with the guidance and expertise of John Trevathan and his team of seasoned advisors. It is rare for business owners to become really successful managing their financials on their own. A lot of businesses don’t have the resources to hire a full-time controller or CFO. Thankfully, Trevathan, CPA, is now offering local businesses a fresh solution to their financial dilemmas with his Controller/CFO services. Mr. Trevathan and his colleagues can offer everything a full-time CFO would—for a lot less. “Basically, a controller does everything that nobody else has time to do,” explains Mr. Trevathan. As a CPA, he performs all traditional accounting and tax functions, and he can do bookkeeping, as well. But in addition to that, he will consult with you on an ongoing basis about strategic business decisions, and oversee every single aspect of your business from a financial standpoint to help
you make sure you are as profitable as you can be. And there is no one more qualified to do that than John Trevathan. He has been a CPA for over 27 years; working 16 of those years as a Controller/CFO in multi-million dollar corporations and 10 years as a CPA in public accounting. Now he enjoys combining his experiences in the corporate world in the service of local businesses in Fort Bend County. “Our job is to measure your success. In the end, accounting is really all about measurement. We have a lot of tools we can use to look at the big picture and help you maximize your long-term profitability.” For example, Mr. Trevathan can help you develop a budget and forecast and measure against it every single month, so you’re always armed with the information you need to make solid business decisions. In addition to Controller/CFO services, the Trevathan CPA firm offers all the services you’d expect, including tax preparation for individuals and businesses, and they’re imminently responsive to their clients’ needs. This year, it’s time to get in on the secret—and let Trevathan CPA help you find out how successful you can really be! The Sweet Sound of Success Karen Daniels hen Rick Cochran started his piano moving business, Blue Streak Transport in 1983, moving an average of thirty-five pianos per day, he was happy with the growth of his company. But since Rick has always had a great ear, he listened when opportunities presented themselves. In 1990, he had the chance to expand the business with service and piano restoration. “We took the pianos that people inherited from their grandmothers and brought them back to life.” One thing led to another and in 2004, they began offering music lessons, and the company grew overnight. It’s hard to believe that what we know as Fort Bend Music Center, has grown from twelvehundred square-feet of space and now occupies twenty-thousand square-feet of classrooms, showrooms and a recital area. Rick explained, “The company has been lesson and service driven. It’s been whatever the customers need and want. When they began asking to buy guitars, that’s when I started to sell guitars. When they needed reeds, or drums or strings, instead of sending people away to make

their purchases, I began to sell these items.” Fort Bend Music Center (FBMC) has been recently selected as one of the vendors to serve Fort Bend ISD with their Band & Orchestra instruments. FBMC offers rentals and sales of instruments and accessories for students in Band & Orchestra. FBMC is conveniently located on the SW Freeway, just north of Alternate 90 in Fort Bend County. Speaking of the kids, don’t forget that Fort Bend Music Center is offering four different Music Camps this summer. One camp is perfect for the child that doesn’t know which instrument to play. They can enjoy three 45-minute sessions to learn piano, guitar, and drums. Do you have a child that loves to sing? Perhaps the Annie or High School Musical Camps would offer that summer singing fun to brighten your child’s afternoons. Individual and group lessons are offered year round and provide families the ability to see these skills with recitals,
both at their store and at the Stafford Center for an evening of wonderful music. There are still a few spaces left in the summer camps; so call today and maybe you’ll be listening to the sweet sound of success in your future. I absolutely love the UltraLux agecontrol complex with synthetic snake venom and the IPL Photofacials for brightening skin tone and reducing those little wrinkles. I kid you not, since I’ve started coming to Kalologie I’ve been stopped in a store by an absolute stranger and complemented on my skin.” “Just like Kalologie’s founder, Tracy Brennen,” says Alyssa, “I tried lots of treatments for my cystic acne before I found Kalologie. He says, “We’re committed to our customized, holistic approach to patient care. Over and over we’ve seen the importance of treating each patient as an individual, and we really empathize with the physical and psychological toll the process can take. I’m delighted to join my colleagues Dr. Chauhan and Dr. Dunn at our Sugar Land office and I will walk your journey with you…whatever the outcome.” “No two patients are ever the same,” says Dr. Chauhan. “That’s the most challenging and inspiring thing about this field. I’ve had patients where the problem was solved when we diagnosed a thyroid disorder and other patients where we explored every avenue. Not every solution is a high-tech solution, so I’ll spend time considering your situation, and we’ll take things one step at a time. Having this amazing opportunity to care for people makes every single appointment of every day special… and bringing the miracle of life to families is the most exciting thing in the world!”
As a medical resident, Dr. Dunn saw some of the first IVF procedures done in Texas. He says, “Over the years I’ve seen amazing advances in this procedure. We take care to avoid the multiple births that some people associate with IVF and it’s getting more coverage by insurance companies. The thing that gets me out of bed every morning is seeing the look on couple’s faces when they learn a pregnancy they thought might never happen has come true. I saw one patient in the early days of IVF who’d had two ectopic pregnancies before she came to my practice. She got pregnant and has sent me a Christmas card every year since… and this year the photo showed her son graduating high school. For all of us the most incredible part of our profession is becoming part of your family and making your dreams of a child come true!” Fertility Specialists of Houston An affiliate of Obstetrical and Gynecological Associates, P.A. 4724 Sweetwater Blvd, Ste 105 Sugar Land, TX 77479 832-553-5IVF (5483) www.fshivf.com

ike so many kids, I struggled with acne,” says Dr. David Powell, “and when a dermatologist finally cleared my skin, it inspired me. From that moment, I’ve always had a deep understanding that a problem some people consider cosmetic really causes psychological distress. I also love the way that dermatology combines interesting parts from a number of specialties—geriatrics, pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, and cosmetic medicine—into one exciting discipline. I might treat a child with eczema in one room, a mom wanting to reduce wrinkles in the next room, and a grandfather with skin cancer in the next… there’s always something new!” When doctors told one young woman they couldn’t help her, she turned to Dr. Powell. He says, “I had a young African American patient who’d been a model before she decided to get a tattoo on her upper chest. The tattoo reacted badly with her skin and formed a keloid scar. She came to me because she hadn’t been able to model and she was getting married in six months. Through a series of treatments, I was able to reduce the scar and make it much less noticeable…but the scar wasn’t the only thing that changed. When she came in she wouldn’t make eye contact and she kept her head down, but after her treatments she was bubbly and vivacious again. She sent me a letter from her 8 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2010
honeymoon saying, “Thank you for changing my life!” This summer, Dr. Powell wants you to remember one particular story. He says, “A mother in her fifties brought her eighteen-year-old daughter to me. After going to tanning beds with her mom since she was twelve years old, that young girl had developed melanoma. Putting aside the wrinkles, broken capillaries, and early signs of aging caused by UV light, the risk of skin cancer should be a big incentive to put on your hat and sunscreen and protect yourself from the sun!” Do you know the experience and training of the people caring for your skin? As Dr. Powell says, “If your skin isn’t becoming to you, then you should be coming to us!”

It’s All About the Story
“I
’m the perfect example of how not to go about getting into this business,” laughs Ned Hibberd, local reporter for Fox 26’s evening news. “I’ve always been involved in television, but after high school my parents insisted I get a liberal arts education. I came to Rice University…that’s what brought me to Houston. Once I graduated, I got an internship at the Fox network and after two years they hired me on. I started off running the teleprompter and the studio camera, but as soon as I could, I transferred to the newsroom. I worked my way from assignment editor to a reporter in 1992… and none of that is the way you usually become a reporter.” “After my wife Danielle and I got married, we started looking for the perfect home for the family we hoped we’d have. Her parents live in Fort Bend, and once we came to Sugar Land we knew it was ideal…very family-oriented. Now we’ve got a four-year-old son and one-year-old twin boys and we couldn’t be happier! I spend mornings at home with the kids and
go into work in the afternoon to pitch my story ideas. We’re always trying to deepen the experience for our viewers…that’s why we’ve started including short talks from experts on our nine o’clock news to give a more in-depth understanding of events.” “While it always depends on the breaking news, I love the opportunity to develop an amazing story and share it with you. For instance, recently we learned that there’s a ‘Tree of Hope’ in the chapel at Texas Children’s Hospital where people can write their prayers on pieces of paper and tie them to the branches. The senior chaplain told me they receive an enormous amount of written prayers from patients, parents, and volunteers. Every year chaplains and volunteers from the hospital go on retreat and read the prayers aloud before feeding them into a fire so the smoke goes up to heaven. When worshippers come to the chapel on Ash Wednesday, the ashes they receive on their foreheads are the prayers that were written throughout the year come full circle. Sharing that kind of meaningful story is the reason I’m a reporter.”

Dr.
Sandra Templeton wants us to know something: “There’s good news in the advancements in breast cancer treatment. The chances of survival are far higher and procedures are less invasive than they were twenty years ago.” She should know, Dr. Templeton focuses on diseases and surgery of the breast, specifically the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Her mission is to provide patients with the most current technologies and procedures in an environment of unequaled compassion and understanding. The one-size-fits-all approach that our mothers and grandmothers received is a thing of the past. For example, if your tests reveal you have cancer, a team of doctors will be assembled to provide treatment that caters to the patient’s specific needs. The team consists of the surgeon, the breast imager, the oncologists, and if needed, a reconstructive surgeon. When you are under the care of Dr. Templeton, you benefit from her philosophy that the treatment should be as individual as the person being treated.
10 ~ UPCLOSE ~ June 2010
She explains, “The majority of breast cancer can be treated with a lumpectomy and radiation. In the past, doctors have performed mastectomies, but years of data have shown that the survival rate is the same.” Dr. Templeton is a graduate of Baylor University and Baylor college of Medicine. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. f you are in search of a nurturing atmosphere mixed with award-winning choreography, you need look no further than Masters Upper Level. Founded by Artistic Director and Choreographer, Melissa Hooks Robinson fifteen years ago, Masters Upper Level has built quite a reputation for the serious dancer. Melissa’s lifelong passion with dance began at the age of 4. She competed from the age of 6 until the age of 21. Her experience and love of dance is an inspiration to her students. Masters Upper Level offered recreational and competitive dance up until 5 years ago. At that time, Melissa made the tough decision to provide only competitive dance classes, realizing this was what set them apart from other dance schools. She is in the studio every day helping young dancers achieve their dreams. Melissa explains, “Life lessons are learned here. Confidence, discipline, time management, and teamwork are cultivated while the kids are doing something they love.” Do you have a child interested in performing? Do they dance around the room whenever they hear music? Well, you’re in luck! On Saturday, June 5th Masters Upper Level is hosting an open audition for new

dancers interested in joining a company with a stellar reputation for excellence. New this year will be auditions for kids between the ages of 4 to 6. All they need to bring is determination and an engaging smile, and MUL will take it from there. The 7 to 18 year-olds need to be of intermediate or advanced levels to join the group, and prior formal training is recommended, but not completely necessary since some kids are just born with natural talent. During the audition, the kids will be taught three different combos in jazz, tap and ballet. Criteria of judging will be their level of technique, speed at which the routine is learned, and enthusiasm for dance. The studio has many success stories. Several students who began dancing at MUL at an early age have been accepted to The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. An average of 225 students try out for HSPVA per year, but only 25 to 30 make it. Chelsea Bohny won a Gold Medal representing the United States in the Dance Olympics in Germany. Justin Prescott, another MUL alumnus who also attended HSPVA, received a dance scholarship to SUNY Purchase in New York and was recently chosen to be in the new Broadway musical, “Fella.” Jana Thompkins has performed with LL Cool J, Missy Elliot, Snoop Dog, Mary J Blige, and has performed live on television award shows. Come see the company perform “Kill the Lights” June 10th at 7:00pm at Stafford Centre’s Performing Arts Theatre located on 10505 Cash Road for only $15.00 and see them in action. A Surgeon With Heart
Sarah Warburton hen local Trendsetter Homes realtor Jeanne Shimala noticed her left leg was ice-cold and her foot was turning black and blue, her primary doctor referred her to local vascular specialist, Dr. Ulises Baltazar. She said, “As a realtor for seventeen years, I’ve become an excellent judge of character. Dr. Baltazar and his staff put me at ease right away. Everything that happened during and after my surgery just confirmed that this man is both an outstanding vascular surgeon and an outstanding human being.” “I felt completely safe with Dr. Baltazar. After a series of tests, he confirmed a venous insufficiency on my right leg and we decided to proceed with venous ablation. He’s fantastic with diagnostics. I could see him really focusing in on my test results, and then he explained them carefully to me to make sure
W
I understood and was comfortable with our course of action.” An additional health challenge made Jeanne’s surgery even more complicated. She says, “My nervous system and muscles are affected by a form of muscular dystrophy called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Dr. Baltazar did extensive research to find an anesthetic that would work for me. When I received the local anesthetic, Dr. Baltazar held my hand and talked me through it. I was awake through the surgery, so I saw first-hand how much care Dr. Baltazar took with me. I asked if Dr. Baltazar would tell my husband, Bruce…and he said he’d already told him everything. Bruce and I will have been married forty years in August, and he was very impressed with Dr. Baltazar’s warmth and professionalism. The most amazing thing happened after
surgery, when I was back in my hospital room. I was still very groggy, but when I opened my eyes, Dr. Baltazar was there. He said, ‘I was just concerned about you and I wanted to check in.’ It was eleven o’clock at night and early the next morning, he was scheduled to train for the MS150! He really puts his patients first. The Magic of the Food F Karen Daniels or those of us who have a little Italian in our blood, we know the definition of La Magia means the magic and Ray Razmdideh has created just that. Blending the comfortable Italian bistro ambiance with today’s busy family schedule, Ray’s La Magia provides an atmosphere that everyone can enjoy—painted murals, video arcade games, a flat screen on the wall, and great wine, beer, and frozen margaritas—once inside you’ll feel instantly relaxed. Ray moved from New Jersey and transferred to the University of Houston to be closer to family. He put himself through college working in restaurants, finishing a degree in civil engineering. The problem was, when he graduated, civil engineering was not where his passion was. Ray loved being around food and after years of experience, he wanted to create his own recipes using only the freshest ingredients. A 9 to 5 office job would not fulfill this dream. Lucky for us Ray pursued his passion and we have a great neighborhood restaurant to show for it. A La Magia favorite is their pizza. Did you know that the best way to bake a pizza is from the bottom up? Most pizza joints today don’t use a brick oven. Instead, the pizza is placed on a conveyer belt and sent through an incredibly hot oven at a fast pace, baking the pizza from top Ray’s family are his biggest fans!

Good pizza shouldn’t be rushed, and that’s no problem when you’re dining at a restaurant with immediate seating and a great selection of pasta dishes, appetizers and a few vegetarian dishes. During the weekend, Ray creates off the menu specials that are sure to tempt your palette. When asked how he comes up with these new recipes, he said, “A lot of our specials come to us from our customers. They tell us what they like, what they enjoy eating, and that inspires us to come up with a new recipe that everyone will love.” Stop by for the daily lunch specials offering soup or salad and an entrée of your choice for only $6.99. Your Addiction is Showing A
lot of people have this image of an addict or an alcoholic as a panhandler who lives under a bridge, someone who’s lost everything. The truth is most addicts are pretty high functioning. High functioning means they manage to get through their daily routines and are really good at hiding their addiction from themselves and other people. Their addiction tricks them into believing they’re in control, when actually they’re not. On some level they know, and the people around them know what’s going on, but nobody knows how to take that first step. So whether you’re personally battling a drug or alcohol problem, or you are being affected by someone who is, you don’t have to wait to get the help you need. You can call one of the professionals at Memorial Hermann Prevention and Recovery Center (PaRC). They can answer a question as simple as, “What do I do?” or “Where do I start?” As CEO Matt Feehery says, “We meet people where they are. At whatever point people decide to seek help, the PaRC is ready, it is open for admissions and referrals 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” The PaRC is a nationally recognized alcohol and substance dependence treatment center that has been successfully treating individuals and their families for the past 10 years. Addiction is not prejudiced; it can affect people of all ages, races, religions and income levels. There are people you see everyday who are either battling addiction or they have a family member or friend that is currently fighting a losing battle. Please know that there is a facility that not only cares, it can help. The PaRC has a staff that includes board-certified addiction professionals, doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, social workers and licensed chemical addiction counselors. They are able to offer individualized treatment and support throughout the recovery process. The PaRC is there
for you during diagnosis/screening, detoxification, treatment and aftercare. The PaRC has a strong professionals program; tailoring the treatment approaches and interventions to the needs of working professionals. The Professional and Executives program is a specific course of treatment designed to meet the needs of men and women who may have delayed seeking treatment due to the high visibility of their professional position. Professionals treated in this program include, but are not limited to: doctors, nurses, dentists, attorneys, pilots and executives working at companies with Employee Assistance Programs. As with all of their programs, the PaRC’s Professional and Executive Program accommodates the individual needs of each client. There is residential treatment, a partial hospital program, an intensive outpatient program (day and evening), family services and career coaching to name a few. You don’t have to wait to get help for you or someone you know and you don’t have to hit rock bottom before you do something. You may not even be sure you’re ready to take that first step; that’s okay. Just remember, the experienced professionals at the PaRC can help, all you have to do is call.

A Man Who Loves a Challenge
Cara Smith ob McKelvey has always loved a challenge. Over 20 years ago, he and his wife Renee started their own flooring business—from the ground up, quite literally—and since then, he’s constantly sought out ways to offer more of everything to his customers: more products, more style, more services. Somewhere along the way, All About Carpet and Floors became all about a lot more than just carpet and floors. As the years progressed, Bob found himself embarking on bigger and more complicated projects, until today, total kitchen and bath remodels account for a huge percentage of his largely referralsbased business. “It just snowballed,” laughs Bob, “but it’s always fun to find ways to accommodate our customers’ ideas. Years ago, we started out doing tile—first on the floors, and then maybe a tub surround here and a whole shower there. Then clients wondered if we could enlarge a shower, or move it a little, and we’d call out the best plumber we knew.” Today, Bob and his team are equipped to do just about anything, and they’ve got contacts with the most expert, reputable trades people and contractors in Fort Bend County. “Every job is unique, so every job is a challenge,” says Bob, “especially when
you!
B
you’re as concerned as we are about getting it done right.” And get it done right they do; their customers keep coming back for more, and sending their friends and family along, too. From a simple cosmetic makeover in a house you’re flipping, to a major renovation that will last you for years to come, Bob can find a solution that will fit both your style and your budget. “You can completely update a bathroom just by swapping out the tile and countertops,” says Bob. But you may be looking for more— and Bob can take care of that, too. “A lot of folks are ready to swap out their dated Jacuzzi tubs for soakers that are easier to clean and require less water, so they’ll actually use them more,” says Bob. “Walk-in showers are also really popular, and we can move yours or enlarge it to create a whole new experience. You’d be amazed at the difference just adding a few inches can make.” One of the things Bob loves most is the give-and-take with his customers during every job. “After finishing a shower recently, we were all set to have our glass contractors come out and install the door. But our client was so happy with it as it was, she decided to do without the glass—and surprised even herself. But it looked fantastic!” The challenge of keeping his customers happy—and his ability to rise to the occasion every time—has set Bob apart and allowed his business to grow and prosper. “Where would we be if we didn’t challenge ourselves?” asks Bob. So stop by the showroom any time Monday – Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00pm to see for yourself what he can do; your only challenge will be deciding what you want! Just Remove The Interference Cara Smith sk David Martino, D.C., what really makes him tick, and you’ll get an immediate answer—his patients. “Helping unhealthy people get well is what I love most about my job. It’s why I chose to practice corrective chiropractic, and it’s what inspires me every single day,” says Dr. Martino. But he might not feel so passionately about it if he didn’t have a first-hand experience with it himself. “Corrective chiropractic absolutely saved my life,” he says. At the young age of 18, Dr. Martino severely injured his back and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. “I thought I was facing two major surgeries and a lifetime of medications,” he says, “but then a friend convinced me to see his chiropractor. After having my spine corrected and changing my lifestyle, here I am, more than a decade later, pain-free, medication-free, and I’ve never had surgery.” As a practitioner of corrective chiropractic, Dr. Martino’s number one goal is to help his patients achieve the highest quality of life they possibly can. “Through bad habits and misinformation, I see people

who are more unhealthy than ever,” he says. “In fact, our bodies are completely equipped to heal us, all we have to do is remove the underlying cause. By correcting spinal misalignments and helping people make healthy lifestyle choices, I help my patients’ bodies do what they want to do: get well and stay well. Whether it’s headaches, high blood pressure or pain, the body is trying to tell you something is wrong. Don’t just cover up the symptom, get rid of the cause. Dr. Martino finds that some of his most rewarding patients are also his youngest. “I love to be able to help kids while they’re young,” he says. “When I can sit down with them and their parents and inspire good health habits at an early age, I know they’ll have a far better quality of life both now and years down the road. That just feels really good.” Remember, corrective chiropractic isn’t just about back pain; “it’s about helping the body heal itself,” says Dr. Martino. To learn more, be sure to schedule an appointment—he’ll give you a comprehen-
sive exam, complete with x-rays, as well as a thorough patient-education seminar. You’ll be back on track in no time! Corrective Chiropractic David Martino, D.C. 281-261-7200 5201 Hwy. 6 South, Suite 800 www.drdavidmartino.com

Finding the Road to Recovery

O
ften when you’re sick, there isn’t much mystery. A stubbed toe, the chickenpox, even a bout of seasonal allergies take a fairly predictable course. But sometimes you need a specialist to do a little detective work. At Fort Bend Rheumatology Associates, Dr. J. Edward Hernandez, M.D. specializes in diseases of the joints and soft tissues. He says, “There are no hard and fast rules or simple checklists for the kind of autoimmune disorders I treat. I enjoy spending time with my patients and getting to the root of the problem.” When you’re in pain, you start with your primary doctor. If anti-inflammatory medications don’t work, the doctor will order x-rays and blood work and may refer you to a rheumatologist. Dr. Hernandez says, “We’ll talk together and I’ll look back over your medical history to see if there are criteria that point to a diagnosis. Once the disease is under control the pain usually improves. Most of these conditions also
require a multi-disciplinary approach, so I coordinate with other specialists like gastroenterologists, dermatologists, and ophthalmologists for a ‘big picture’ approach.” Dr. Hernandez serves as an Associate Clinical Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He says, “Now we recognize these diseases as autoimmune disorders, and many of them are linked. For example, I’ve treated patients for psoriatic arthritis and had their skin clear up as well. Gout is linked to high levels of uric acid in the blood and can cause complications like high blood pressure and kidney dysfunction. Most of these diseases are easily treatable, once they’re diagnosed.” As the father of three children and a triathlete-in-training with “On Ur Left,” Dr. Hernandez understands how your health impacts your life. He says, “I really do enjoy getting to know my patients and learning about their lives and families. We make things easy and convenient for them with
in-office blood draws, ultrasound guided injections, and electronic medical records. We also have an on-site infusion center for IV medical therapy. Patients diagnosed with a chronic disease can be in treatment for extended periods of time and we want to make that time as pleasant as possible.” Fort Bend Rheumatology Associates 281-980-1742 2225 Williams Trace Blvd., Ste 110 www.FortBendRheumatology.com
Giving Back
Karen Daniels magine living with such excruciating back pain that you begin to lose hope for a normal life. This is exactly what Pam Koch felt last year after life-threatening complications from a surgery triggered, among other problems, her sciatic nerve. Due to this pain, Pam needed the assistance of a walker to get around and was told by doctors that a wheelchair might eventually be required. She tried everything to alleviate the pain: massages, chiropractors, laser treatments, muscle relaxers, but these remedies only provided limited relief. It wasn’t until Pam read an article on Dr. Brown M.D. and his clinic, Back Pain Interventions, that she found true relief. Pam’s advice, “Don’t waste another day of your life suffering from back pain.” She provided Dr. Brown with a medical history of her symptoms and he performed a thorough diagnostic workup. After receiving three ESI injections under light sedation within a four-week period, Pam received her new lease on life just in time for

Christmas. “Dr. Brown and his staff were so professional and so compassionate. I’d like to go to work for them just so I can be in that family environment every day.”
Pam’s advice, “Don’t waste another day of your life suffering from back pain.” One month later an opportunity to give back presented itself. The show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was coming to Kemah, and Pam wanted to help. Thanks to Dr. Brown’s successful treatment she was able to work at the site, standing on her feet for hours at a time, providing water and lunches to the other workers—something that would have been impossible just two months prior. In fact it was a family affair. Her daughters held a food drive in their neighborhood and at Kempner High School with enough food to pile high the bed of their truck.

What Makes Him Smile? Sarah Warburton
H
ave you ever met someone and wondered, “What makes them so happy?” For Dr. Danny Nguyen, the answer is simple. What makes him smile? “Seeing a smile on someone’s face who wasn’t smiling when they walked through our door. That’s the whole reason I became a dentist…to change people’s lives!” If you’re feeling self-conscious, smiling may be the last thing on your mind. Dr. Nguyen says, “I had one patient with a missing front tooth who was so self-conscious about his smile. He had a permanent tooth that just never came in, and he was nervous about getting it fixed. Even though he was a naturally outgoing and friendly guy, anxiety about that gap really brought him down. Even before he got his bridge, when I fitted him with a temporary, he was so happy. I hate to see people whose confidence and self-esteem have been knocked around by the way they feel about their teeth—even something as minor as a crown or teeth whitening can make a huge difference.”
Nervous about going to the dentist or hyper-sensitive about the state of your smile? Go ahead and tell Susan, the Patient Care Coordinator or Dr. Nguyen how you feel. He says, “Sometimes we don’t know that a quiet person is really feeling nervous, until the appointment is over and we see how relaxed and chatty they are afterwards. If you’re nervous about coming to the dentist, we’ll talk you through it. Natalie, our dental assistant has a very gentle touch and we’ll set you up in the massaging exam chair with a pair of sunglasses, so you can unwind.” Dr. Nguyen started out as a dental assistant…and he just kept going! He says, “After working as a dental assistant, I went to hygiene school. While working as a dental hygienist, I saw all the ways dentists make a positive impact on people’s lives, and I wanted to help people more and more. That’s what motivated me to go through school to become a dentist. Caring for patients really is my passion and my calling. All of us at EcoDental love to see you smile!”

Outside of the Box Sarah Warburton re you looking for a personalized experience with a pharmacist who smiles, looks you in the eye, and really spends time talking with you? That’s an essential part of the job for a compounding pharmacist like the ones at our local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. believed that if we treat people with a good, ethical, Christian attitude, you’ll always have enough business. Working so closely with our patients means you really remember them as individuals…and really, it’s all about helping people. That’s the reason I became a compounding pharmacist.” Thinking outside the box may mean using a medication for its side effects instead of its original use. Dr. Campbell says, “I had a patient whose mother-in-law struggled with diabetes. She had ulcers almost down to the bone, and open wounds that just wouldn’t heal. The seizure medication phenytoin, if applied topically in a gel form, can lead to tissue re-growth. This woman had tried everything, when I told her son-in-law about phenytoin. He brought in a blank prescription from the doctor for me to fill out, and after three months her wounds were completely healed.” “One of my first pediatric patients was a little girl in hospice with a tumor in her mouth. Bleeding unsettled her stomach and made it hard for her to keep down any
food. I was able to compound a formula to stop the bleeding. Once she could eat and her pain subsided, she was more comfortable until the end. I’ll never forget her. She was one of the first patients that I ever treated by coming up with a different solution. Finding creative, effective ways to help patients is why I’m a compounding pharmacist.” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy 281-980-2555 “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 www.CampbellsCompounding.com

A Really Cool History Cara Smith ohnny Jackson, founder of Jackson Air, grew up in rural Oklahoma with ten siblings…and no air conditioning, of course! So it’s pretty amazing the way that life took him to Sugar Land, where he founded the area’s most trusted and reliable A/C company completely from scratch. “He worked in the Air Force as an air craft mechanic, and after that he spent years with National Cash Register,” says his son Brian Jackson, who runs the business now that his dad’s retired. “When he got transferred to Sugar Land in the late 1970s, he started looking around for something different—and decided that, with his mechanical background, helping people keep cool was a good way to go.” For those of you who remember, the economy was in worse shape in the 1970s than it is now—but he made his startup business work. For one thing,
J
he had the foresight to team up with a great company from Tyler, Texas: Trane. “As Sugar Land’s oldest independent Trane dealer, my dad realized right off the bat that their products were vastly superior to others on the market, Trane can handle our extreme summers and that he could offer folks peace of mind by carrying them.” For another thing, he took an oldfashioned approach to customer service that won his customers over faster than an ice cube can melt on a hot day in July. That same dedication to unsurpassed customer service and state-of-the-art cooling systems still sets Jackson Air apart today. “Throughout our history, we’ve known that our clients deserve the finest products and service. That’s why we work so hard to stay abreast of new developments in the industry, from indoor air quality to the most modern A/C technology. To keep our customers cool and com-

Jackson Air has tons of ways to for you to keep your cool—and your hard-earned money, too, so you can really chill during your precious down-time. You could be eligible for a tax credit as high as $1,500, and that’s in addition to Trane rebates of up to $1,000. Talk about serious savings! So give Jackson Air a call—the company with the coolest history, the best customer service, and a real license to chill.

Sarah Warburton hen your child whoops for joy and runs to the car when it’s time for a dental checkup, you must be going to see the Little People’s Dentist, Dr. Bianca Sanchez. This is one dental office where everything’s arranged from a kid’s point of view and it’s getting rave reviews across the board! “Cool” and “Awesome” are just the tip of the iceberg! “Toys and balloons!” said an excited threeyear-old Joshua about Dr. Sanchez’s office. That’s what he remembers about his emergency visit to her office after he chipped a tooth at day-
care. His dad, Richard, says, “I’m a UPS driver and I’d seen her billboard, but we called because of Joshua’s accident and she said to bring him in right away. My wife brought him over and since my route goes right up and down Highway 6 I stopped by. !” He’s at that age where his first answer to any question is “No!” but they were really able to win him over and get him to cooperate. Dr. Sanchez got him to relax right away. He played with a PlayStation game and had a lot of fun, especially when he got a balloon on the way out. On his second visit they had to do sedation, but as he was going under he said, ‘I didn’t get my balloon yet!’ He only remembers how much fun he had.” “Dr. Sanchez rocks!” agree siblings Jonathan (4), Andrew (5), Jeremy (6) and Aaliyah (10). Aaliyah says, “My brothers are wild all the time, but Dr. Sanchez’s office is cool and awesome. Charlotte Grace fter spending several years in the “Big 8” as a CPA, and six years in the Oil & Gas Industry in Internal Auditing, Gary S. Wolfe, MBA, CPA, LUTCF, CLU, ChFC, CLTC wanted to do more with his life. He says, “I wanted to use my financial background to make a significant and positive difference in people’s lives.” This may sound like lofty words for a CPA with a Masters Degree in Business Administration, but Gary knows first hand the importance of building financial security and protecting ones wealth and legacy. Gary’s father died when he was only 7 years old, and leaving behind four children and only $10,000 worth of life insurance, his mother was forced to seek work outside of the family home in an era when moms didn’t work outside the home, no longer leaving her available to the children. It was like a double loss for him and his siblings. “After having the first of three heart attacks, my father’s future insurability was a moot point.” Gary says, “That taught me that there is no finer love letter you can write your family than putting your signature on a quality life insurance and disability income insurance policy, to protect your loved ones in any situation.” Everyone has a busy schedule these days and Gary is the first one to say, “I am the easiest person to put off…but I do not let young husbands tell me fathers don’t die.” Gary values the rewards of his clients’ efforts and sacrifice and focuses on helping them keep, enjoy, and transfer their legacy. He says, “I know I’ve done my job properly when loved ones keep their dignity and the right to go on living in the lifestyle they’ve become accustomed to.” For 23 years Gary has been making a difference in people’s lives by helping them develop sound, long-term financial strategies. During that time he has earned multiple professional designations and industry recognition. Married with two children, Gary is happy and fulfilled with his business

making a clean sweep of things. Max started his business over ten years ago, and in that time he’s watched it grow into one of the area’s most popular and most trusted cleaning services. “Starting a business is tough, and it takes plenty of elbow grease,” Max says wryly. But his sense of humor has stood him in good stead, and given him the patience to stick with it all these years.

What’s the secret to his success? His excellent staff, for the most part. “We’re dedicated to hiring only the best, most trustworthy individuals for our company,” he says. “Our turnover rate is nearly zero, and of course all our maids are bonded and insured for your peace of mind.” And they’re hard working, too, as his customers would attest. “Almost all of our customers are regulars, and we’re proud to have built up such a loyal client base.” Whether you’re looking for once weekly or once monthly cleanings, or you just need a hand before (or after) that big party, Professional Maid Service has got you covered. “We’re here to help you,” says Max, “so we can do as much or as little as you like. And we’re always available on short notice, since you never know when you’ll have a cleaning emergency!” And while Max sticks to running the business for the most part these days, he’s never been afraid to get his hands dirty, so to speak. He knows more cleaning tips than you could shake a stick at—a broomstick, that is, and he’s always happy to share them. Want to share some of your own favorites?

Bringing the Best Together TCRN Sugar Land Network President Brian Covault
W
e all have our personal “favorite places,” the businesses we know that we can recommend with confidence. At the TCRN Sugar Land Network, you’ll find a network of businesses that really exemplify the best in our community. Founder Brian Covault says, “These are the same places I’d send my friends and family, because they excel in customer service and deliver the kind of quality experience I know you’ll love.” How did this amazing network come together? Brian says, “Actually, I was talking with Pat Goldwait from Fort Bend Toyota about networking opportunities available here in Fort Bend. Essentially I did some research and found there was a need for the kind of network I wanted to create…one that offered benefits for small businesses and for their customers. The TCRN Sugar Land Network gives entrepreneurs and small business owners more leverage and more ways to increase their exposure. We have a stringent screening process and develop personal relationships that really strengthen our local businesses. In addition, we offer the community a point of reference for businesses I know they can depend on to deliver an unmatched caliber of services and products. Back in 2008 Fort Bend Toyota was the very first member of the TCRN Sugar Land Network…and today we have over a hundred members!” This year’s annual Sugar Land BASH was a great success, as the TCRN Sugar Land Network hosted our community at a charity event to benefit Snowdrop Foundation. In addition to having a fantastic night of familyfriendly fun, everyone at the BASH raised funds to provide scholarships for college-
bound pediatric cancer patients and survivors...from Sugar Land, Missouri City, Stafford, Richmond, and Rosenberg. Members of the TCRN Sugar Land Network pitched in across the board from the “Dunk a Doc” booth sponsored by Richmond Bone and Joint to the Tug-of-War Event between local heroes, the SLPD and the SLFD, sponsored by the Scott Wong Agency of State Farm… and each event was expertly emceed by our own Daniella Guzman and Randy McIlvoy from KPRC Local 2 News. “We’re thrilled to have created such a popular event for such a worthy cause,” says Brian. “Although we have to wait another year for the next annual Sugar Land BASH, our members still give back to the community year round. For example, as a network
organization we make a healthy donation every month to the Helping Hands food bank. I think we can all be proud of the excellent service and a community spirit that define members of the TCRN Sugar Land Network.” Visit www.SugarLandNetwork.org to see the full range of members from businesses like home services, restaurants, and medical services to community resources like churches. Now, as announced at the Sugar Land BASH, RE/MAX Fine Properties located at 4500 Highway 6 in Sugar Land, is the exclusive real estate office for the TCRN Sugar Land Network. Brian says, “We are proud to be affiliated with RE/MAX Fine Properties, General Manager Minesh Patel, and their eighty-two agents. All the businesses at the TCRN Sugar Land Network are working together to provide the kind of excellence that Fort Bend deserves!”

Space Magic H
ave you ever run the numbers on your kitchen cabinets and pantry? The math tells you there’s plenty of space, but you can’t see or reach anything. Kitchen expert, Ric Trahan says, “When I worked in the Houston area designing and installing countertops, I could see that lots of people needed a different option to make their kitchens easier and more fun to use. I started looking for solutions and that’s when I found ShelfGenie.” If your base cabinets and pantry have become the Bermuda Triangle, and you keep buying and storing can goods that seem to disappear; the problem isn’t the amount of space you have, but could be the way you use it. Ric has the answer for those deep cabinets with hard to reach spaces. He says, “We’ve done pantry installations where the homeowner has been shocked to discover hundreds of dollars of expired cans hiding in the back corners. We always begin with an in-home consultation to talk about the way you actually use your kitchen. Our custom-approach means that we’ll start you off with the products that are right for your kitchen, your appliances, and your lifestyle. In fact, we’ve even done ‘space makeovers’ for clients with mobility issues who use wheelchairs or walkers.” There may be no need to replace perfectly good cabinets—instead, make the space you already have into “smarter space.” Ric says, “At ShelfGenie we have custom risers and innovative solutions like glide-out shelves that slide perpendicularly, one above the other to make your entire “blind corner” usable…customers love to show this one to their neighbors! At a recent home show, people even stood three deep to see ShelfGenie’s innovative solutions.” Imagine having room for your cookie sheets and a shelf that holds your Mix Master that slides out fully with just the touch of a finger. Spare your knees and lower back with the help of fully-extendable glide-out shelving. If your teenagers empty the dishwasher, they’ll actually know how to put things away in your wellorganized cabinets. Things will be easy to find, easily accessible, and easy to put away. Ric says, “I know my family spends most of our time together in the kitchen, and ShelfGenie makes it easy and uncomplicated to relax and enjoy ourselves…and I love sharing that feeling with other families, too!” ShelfGenie 877-434-3643 www.ShelfGenie.com rtrahan@shelfgenie.com
