Growth & Sarah Warburton ven the largest families start out with just two people…before growing and growing. When a medical practice meets patients’ needs, the same thing happens! Dr. Shannon Crowe and Dr. Bryan Blonder have practiced together in Sugar Land since 2000. In 2008 they struck out on their own and founded Sweetwater Ob/Gyn Associates where their combination of personal care and advanced techniques made them thrive. In August 2009 they welcomed Dr. Kelli Burroughs to the practice and now the doctors and staff at Sweetwater Ob/Gyn are excited to announce the addition of two more doctors, Dr. Michelle Wong and Dr. Brian Heaps. Plenty of work goes into growing a happy baby, a healthy family, and a medical practice. These two new doctors give us double the good news this month! Dr. Heaps is married and has 3 sons, ages 2, 4, and 8. Interestingly he had a “former life” as the lead singer in a band and he still enjoys playing and recording music. After growing up in Utah, he graduated from the VCU School of Medicine in Virginia where his grandfather also graduated in 1939. He came to Houston for his Ob/Gyn residency right here at UT Houston Memorial Hermann. He says, “My

wife Kelsey is originally from Sugar Land … I’m excited to be a part of this community through Sweetwater Ob/Gyn.” Dr. Wong attended medical school at George Washington University School of Medicine with a full scholarship from the U. S. Navy, and she did her residency at the National Naval Medical Center and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. While practicing as an Ob/Gyn at the Dewitt Army Community Hospital, she won awards for teaching and for patient satisfaction. Dr. Wong served eight years in the U.S. Navy and is a Lieutenant Commander. She says, “As I separate from the military, I’m looking forward to spending more time with my wonderful family, my husband (also a physician) and two little boys, ages five and two and a half and my patients at Sweetwater Ob/Gyn.” Sweetwater Ob/Gyn specializes in minimally invasive hysterectomies, laparoscopy, minimallyinvasive or non-surgical solutions for female incontinence and heavy menstrual bleeding. Dr. Blonder says, “We also offer Essure®, an FDAapproved, completely non-surgical alternative to tubal ligation that requires no general anesthesia, no abdominal incision, and is 99.9 percent effective.” In addition Drs. certified DaVinci Robotic surgeons. From its conception to today’s success, Sweetwater Ob/Gyn has exceeded its milestones at every stage. This growth comes from the philosophy of caring for women for a lifetime; from the onset of fertility through childbearing to menopause. Dr. Burroughs says, “We all get excited about delivering a baby, but we really enjoy building long-term relationships with our patients!” As Sweetwater Ob/Gyn Associates grows, we’ll all enjoy the blessings of their personal attention and top-of-the-line medical care. Dr. Crowe says, “I know our new doctors will continue to honor our practice’s commitment to caring for the women of our community. Methodist Sugar Land is first in county to perform rotational atherectomy
C
ardiologist Sherman Tang, M.D., recently performed Fort Bend County’s first-ever rotational atherectomy at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. The procedure uses a tiny rotating burr that is coated with microscopic diamond crystals to safely remove plaque from narrowed or blocked arteries. The burr is attached to a thin guidewire and is inserted into the artery via a catheter. Dr. Tang guides the burr to the blockage using an X-ray camera and an angiogram. “Rotational atherectomy is a proven technology that ablates, or sands away, the diseased plaque in an artery with minimal side effects and without impacting healthy tissue,” says Dr. Tang. “It is like drilling a tunnel through the blockage.” The diamond-coated burr is powered by air, and can be set at speeds of up to 180,000 revolutions per minute. As the rotating tip moves through the narrowed artery, it scrapes away diseased plaque from the artery walls. Those plaque particles are smaller than red blood cells and are harmlessly carried away and eliminated by the body’s circulatory system. Patients undergoing a rotational atherectomy often receive a stent, or narrow metal tube, at the location of the blockage to keep it from closing.
The procedure takes about two hours, and patients can be up and walking within six hours. “We keep the patient overnight for observation but most can go home the next day, and return to work within a couple of days,” says Dr. Tang. The first patient to undergo the procedure in Fort Bend, Bobbie J. Davidson, was pleased with the relative ease of the rotational atherectomy. “It is a real relief to know that Dr. Tang was able to clear the blockage in my artery,” says Davidson. “Plus, I didn’t feel any pain during the actual procedure and there was very little recovery time.” To make an appointment with Dr. Tang or other cardiologists in your area, call Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s physician referral line 281274-7500 or visit MethodistSugarLand.com. Are You Seeing Red?
Sarah Warburton
E
ven if you love everything about summer—swimming in the pool, family vacations, more time with the kids— allergies could have you “seeing red.” But are you really sure that it’s poor air quality and pollen behind those red, itchy eyes? We asked our resident expert, Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source for a clear-eyed look on the secrets behind your red eyes. Air pollution, the chlorine from swimming pools, smoke from the barbeque, and all the pollen from budding trees and blooming plants can irritate your sensitive eyes. Dr. Doan says, “Allergy sufferers may have conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the thin, transparent layer that lines the inner eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. Our first step will be diagnosis. Once we know allergies are behind your condition, we’ll have a range of treatment options… even for contact lens wearers!” Could the reason
behind your redness and irritation be more than meets the eye? Dr. Doan says, “Some other conditions are commonly mistaken for allergies. If you suffer from dry eye, you may experience burning, grittiness, or the feeling that something’s in your eye…but oral antihistamines can actually make it worse. While allergies can cause conjunctivitis, so can bacteria or viruses. In bacterial infections, your eyes might be “bright red” and the eyelids could stick together, especially in the morning. Viral conjunctivitis causes redness and glassy appearance and is very contagious. Viral conjunctivitis can be spread through direct contact or even through contaminated swimming pools. With the proper diagnosis and treatment, we’ll get your eyes healthy and clear again!” Enjoy the sights of summer from your flourishing garden to a tropical vacation… without any redness. And why not give your eyes a little extra boost? Dr. Doan says, “I always recommend choosing sunglasses with polarization and UVA/UVB protection to defend your eyes from long term sun damage like cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as short term damage like corneal burns. They’re like sunscreen for your eyes!”

kay, tell the truth, how many of you LOVE cleaning your house? Do you really love to put on the rubber gloves and get down on our hands and knees and scrub the toilet? If you weren’t spending hours each week cleaning your house, what could you be doing? How much more time for you and your family would you have if you let the professionals at Professional Maid Service clean your house for you? “Freeing yourself from heavy housework can make such a difference in your life,” says owner Max McCammond. “You’ll have more time to do what you love doing and a clean house to do it in.” Sure you could clean your house. Everyone can. But what can your time be better spent doing? Those at Professional Maid Service
are bonded and insured and they want to clean your house for you! How does it get any better than this? They offer a ‘Signature Green Service’ where they use ‘Green Seal Certified’ products that are safe for those with sensitive allergies. In an effort to “Max”imize time, owner Max has these helpful cleaning tips for you. Cola – not just for drinking anymore. Got a clogged sink, toilet or shower drain? Pour two or three cans of cola down the drain and wait one or two hours and your drain will once again be clog free. Rust no more. To remove stubborn rust stains from sinks, toilets or tubs, fill them with water and drop one or two denture cleaner tablets in. Let them soak and the fizz will get to work. Rinse and rust stains should be gone. One more tip for your bathroom: An easy way to get rid of scum on your plastic shower curtains or liners is to pop them in the wash machine with a bath towel for scrubbing action along with your regular laundry detergent. You can let it drip dry inside the tub from its original hangers.
How valuable is time for you or time with for you and your family? What else can you add to your life if you’re not cleaning your house? Call Max or Connie at Professional Maid Services and let them assist you in getting the extra time you so rightly deserve and let freedom ring! hat’s the secret to Sugar Land’s success? Our fantastic year-round weather, our entrepreneurial spirit and our family-friendly community have made this one of the best places in the United States to live. And now we’ve more news to make you proud. Our very own Classic Chevrolet is one of the fastest growing Chevy dealerships in the country and it’s the third largest Camaro dealer in the US! Don Kerstetter says, “The great relationship we’ve built with this community is the foundation of our success…and we’re committed to continuing to offer the same friendly, dependable service that makes us a Classic!” What could be better than taking pride in the quality of our local businesses? Knowing that by supporting businesses like Classic Chevrolet, you’re contributing to the continuing success of our entire county! Don says, “We went from zero employees in January of 2009 to one hun-
dred and fifty today and most live and do their shopping right here in Fort Bend. When you spend your money with us, it goes right back into the community to support local growth. We’ve also been an active supporter of local charities from elementary and high schools to sports teams to food banks. Being a good neighbor means reaching out a helping hand whenever we can.” Moms and dads, restaurant owners and teachers, even our local police and city officials depend on Classic Chevrolet, the largest Chevy dealership in Fort Bend County and the fourteenth largest in the US. Don says, “We’re proud to have won the bid to supply the city of Sugar Land with twenty-four vehicles including Tahoes and Impalas. Hindsight’s 20/20 N Sarah Warburton obody should look back on a home roofing project and think “Why didn’t we ask for references?” or “I wish we’d checked their credentials!” Since the State of Texas doesn’t regulate the roofing industry, the burden’s on the homeowner to decide between a trustworthy roofing company and a “fair-
weather roofer” with nothing but a truck and a ladder. Forget regret and get the job done right the first time with a few timely tips from Joe Rangel at Ameristar, the local roofing company that’s always looking out for you!
Right off the bat, a good roofer should offer proof of insurance and provide references. Joe says, “We’re proud of the reputation we’ve built in the community and the credentials we’ve earned. Some customers received bids from four companies including Ameristar. I invited the customer to call our insurance company to confirm that our coverage was up-to-date. Turns out one of the other companies had turned in a false certificate of insurance. Anyone can hand you a piece of paper, but a guy with nothing to hide will encourage you to call that insurance company to verify that everything’s up-to-date.” Just as important as having a policy that’s in effect is the amount of coverage a company carries. Anybody can buy the minimum $100,000 coverage, but if there’s an accident on the job or if a freak storm rolls through you want assurance that you and your home will be covered. Joe says, “At Ameristar, we carry two million dollars worth of general liability insurance, so you won’t have to worry. And we won’t ask for

If a company asks you to pay up-front that’s a red flag for any home owner.” “We’ve been in this community for a long time,” says Joe, “and we’re proud to show you the kind of reputation we have. ant to give your kids the greatest gift around? Take the time to pass along your knowledge and experience. After all, our great country was founded by people who passed their skills down to their children. This July, think about the things that make America great... and what makes a great American business like our very own Alan’s Plumbing. In early America, if you wanted a solid wooden table or new horseshoes on your horse, you went to the families who’d made a name for themselves in the business. Handing knowledge down the line from generation to generation strengthens our communities...and our country. For over fourteen years Alan Burkhalter’s offered quality plumbing service to the families of Fort Bend. Along with his brother Brian, he’s made a name for Alan’s Plumbing as professional, polite, prompt, and precise. That’s why they’ve won 7 consecutive Reader’s Choice awards!
How does a family build a reputation? The same way a country does... by sons following in their father’s footsteps and a history of doing things right. That’s what you’ll find at Alan’s Plumbing. The three “young guns” are back this summer and they’re continuing their dad’s tradition of excellent service. Every year Alan and Jennifer’s three skilled sons add to their experience, their knowledge, and their history with their Dad’s business. Alan’s oldest son, Beau, just graduated from Texas State University where his brother Luke will start his sophomore year in September. Jake, the youngest, will be a junior at Elkin’s, where he’s gearing up for another football season. Jennifer says, “Our boys have been going out with their dad and uncle since they were about eight or nine years old. A few summers ago they
put in the hours to earn their apprentice plumbing licenses. They’ve got the credentials, the experience...and they want to make their Dad proud. Now Beau’s getting ready to go to A/C school too and we couldn’t be happier!” Hard work, family values, and a history of delivering top-notch service...Alan’s Plumbing is everything an independent American business should be! Jennifer, Alan, and Brian make a great team, and with three “young guns” lined up to continue this family tradition, the business is in good hands. Happy Fourth of July...from Alan’s Plumbing! 281-261-1064.
The Best Ride Ever
Donnielle Carter ’ve been driven to the airport many times by various methods; badgered friends, emotional family, crowded vans and dirty cabs. Nothing compares to the ease and comfort of my most recent trip to the airport via Sugar Land Shuttle. The sedan arrived at my house on time and when I opened the door, a courteous man with a warm smile greeted me hello. After politely introducing himself, the driver carefully loaded my bags into the trunk and off we went. The sedan’s interior was well kept, clean and comfortable and smelled nice. My driver gave me my choice of riding in silence or a pleasant conversation. The trip itself was smooth and easy. My driver respected traffic laws and got me to Hobby Airport in record time. He dropped me at the airport doors, unloaded my bags, shook my hand and wished me a pleasant trip. Thankfully because of him and Sugar Land Shuttle my trip had already began delightfully. Compare that to the dirty smelly cab I ended up in, in NYC with a driver banging his hand on the dashboard and screaming. Marine veteran owned and operated Sugar Land Shuttle offers 24 hour transportation for airport transport, weddings, proms, corporate travel, bachlorette/bachelor evenings and so much more. The drivers are courteous and friendly and you will feel safe and welcome. The fleet of cars consists of black sedans and SUVs to fulfill whatever travel need you have. alologie means the “study of beauty,” and at Kalologie Skincare/ Medspa, they specialize in the study of beautiful skin. Whether customers have stumbled upon the store after shopping at Whole Foods or by word of mouth from a trusted friend, there is something for everybody, in every budget. Kelsey explains, “Some people think that due to the look and feel of our spa, everything is high end. The truth is we’ve actually saved money for some of our customers. One client was spending five-hundred dollars a month, and now, with us, she spends eighty-seven dollars for her entire monthly skincare regimen.” Lana Bristow discovered Kalologie a little over a year ago. She has many favorite products, and especially loves getting facials with Kelsey. The one item she can’t live without is their La Bella Donna cosmetics line; a mineral based formula that allows the skin to breathe as it provides SPF 20 protection. “I was amazed by this,” Lana recalls. “After my facial and makeup application, I went to work and later worked in the yard for over an hour on a very humid day. When I looked in the mirror my makeup was still in place. Their powders stay above the skin; they don’t sink in or fade like a lot of other department store brands.” Like Lana, Rowena, found the store after shopping at Whole Foods, too. She loves the Kalologie Skincare Line and currently uses the Clarify Corrective Wash, Balance Moisturizing Lotion, and Emerge Exfoliating Serum, as her daily routine. The reason she keeps coming back: “You see results, plain and simple. And with their products, a little bit goes a long way.” On this particular afternoon, Rowena stopped by to try free samples of the UV45 oil free sunscreen. And since she’ll be in the sun everyday for her children’s swim
team, it’s important for her to have something that not only protects her from the sun’s harmful rays, but is also good for her skin. Come in for a complimentary consultation to learn more about their effective medical-grade products and create a strategy that will work for you. he doctors of the Methodist Family Medicine Group are dedicated, dynamic, diverse…and in a new office location. This one-of-a-kind practice features eight caring, compassionate family medicine physicians who speak a wide range of languages, allowing them to communicate more effectively with their patients. And all eight are parents of young children themselves, so they can relate to the challenges faced by many families today. Drs. Ana Corteguera, Lisa Holloway, Tayma Shaya, Jennifer Diamond, Yana Finkelshteyn, Mona Sheth, Julie Hung and Seva Papageorge make up Methodist Family Medicine Group, which is conveniently located on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus in Medical Office Building Three. Julie Hung is board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics. All other physicians are board certified in family medicine.
Dr. Hung “We come from different backgrounds, but we’re all passionate about providing excellent family care,” says Dr. Hung. “Together, we enjoy treating the whole family, from babies to grandparents, and all of us at Methodist Family Medicine Group consider our patients to be an extension of our own families.”
The wide range of languages spoken in the office makes the Methodist Family Medicine Group unique. “We all speak English fluently, but I also speak Spanish, Dr. Sheth speaks Gujarati (a dialect of Hindi), Dr. Shaya speaks some
“We want to empower people with the knowledge of how to maintain good health,” says Dr. Holloway. “Our Dr. Holloway office offers state-of-the-art tools for early diagnosis and effective treatment of many serious diseases, including diabetes and hypertension.” In addition to their unique backgrounds and language skills, the doctors at Methodist Family Medicine Group all bring extensive, hands-on knowledge and expertise in treating patients of all ages. They welcome you and your family to come join them at this vibrant new practice.
Dr. Corteguera Arabic, Dr. Papageorge speaks Greek and Dr. Finkelshteyn speaks Russian and Spanish,” says Dr. Corteguera. Because the practice is large, same-day appointments are not a problem, and Saturday appointments are available for patients who are suffering from an acute illness. Do You End the Day With Sore, Swollen Legs? Sarah Warburton

fter twenty years in early childhood education, Jennifer Ogilivie thought sore, aching legs was just part of the job. She says, “I’d come home at the end of the day and just want to lie down, put my legs up and rub my left calf. It really affected my time with my family after work. I thought it was something I’d just have to live with until, based on my symptoms, my dermatologist suggested that I see a vascular surgeon—and a staff member at school recommended Dr. Baltazar.” “As soon as school let out last year I came to his office. Not only is Dr. Baltazar a fantastic doctor, he runs his office with so much integrity. Out of all the doctor’s practices I and my family have known over the years, his is one of the very best run and you get warm, personal treatment from the doctor and his entire staff. He performed an ultrasound on both my legs to check the flow of

blood and he found I had a faulty vein in each leg.” “I couldn’t believe how easy the solution was! Dr. Baltazar performed an outpatient procedure covered by my insurance called endovenous ablation on the varicose veins in both my legs. The best part was his recommendation that I take it easy for a few days…no cooking or cleaning! Although he gave me a prescription for pain medication, I didn’t even need it. After a few days I was back to my regular activity level… and now I’ve finished a whole school year without any pain!” “I’m so thankful I won’t have to endure that achiness and swelling in my legs for the rest of my life. After a full day on my feet all day as the director of the preschool at First United Methodist Church in Missouri City, I come home to a daughter who’ll be a Junior at Elkins and a son who’s just finished his first year at UT. I want to be full of energy for my family.

t Powell Dental Care, it’s not just about taking great care of their patients’ teeth. “We want our patients to understand how their mouths are connected to the rest of their bodies, and how important oral health is to their overall well-being,” explains Dr. Laurena Moore, who, together with her husband and partner, Dr. Marty Powell, offers her patients balanced, comprehensive dental care. Drs. Moore and Powell have been committed to that principle throughout their professional lives, which is why they make such an effort to spread awareness about oral health throughout the community. In June, for example, they put together a number of informative presentations and materials for a health fair in honor of Juneteenth. “It gave us an opportunity to dialogue with people who might not come into our office—or any dental office, for that matter—and to answer important questions
about oral health,” says Dr. Moore. “If we can better just one person’s smile and overall health—well, that’s good enough for us,” she says. At the fair, Drs. Moore and Powell offered free dental screenings and passed out lots of free goodies, like toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste, and dental literature. They also held Q&A sessions and gave presentations about the important connection between periodontal (gum) disease and heart disease. “A lot of people don’t understand how intimately these things can be connected,” she says. “If something’s bad for our mouths, it’s probably bad for the rest of us—and vice versa. We’re seeing more and more kids with serious tooth decay because of all the sugary sodas and power drinks they’re consuming. Many parents, however, aren’t aware of how those things also put them at risk for weight problems and diabetes, both now and down the line.”
That’s why community outreach is so important to Dr. Moore and her husband, and why they jump at the chance to participate in health fairs and oral health education. “We’re proud to care for our patients, and we love doing it, too,” Dr. Moore says. “We also hope we can make a difference in the larger community—even among folks we might never see again.” Powell Dental Care 281-302-6284 3681 Highway 6 S @ Settler’s Way powelldentalcare@comcast.net
Helping Families Feel Fantastic!
Sarah Warburton atsy Kusek and her husband do their research up front…so when Patsy’s family doctor recommended that she see a chiropractor for the pain she’d suffered since the birth of her second child, Patsy did a little homework. She says, “I wasn’t impressed with the first chiropractor I visited, but my pain just wouldn’t go away. I was completely numb on my left side from under my breastbone to my left hip when I happened to walk by Dr. Martino’s office. His wife, Susan, was so nice and answered all my questions and Dr. Martino really believes in patient education, too. I decided to give it another try…and now my whole family comes to Dr. Martino!” Sometimes the results speak for themselves! Patsy says, “After the first week I felt such relief that I decided to bring my fouryear-old daughter, Shauna to Dr. Martino. She’d struggled with frequent ear pain and was scheduled to get ear tubes. My hus-

band and I worried about the surgery. Research showed me that chiropractic treatment can help prevent ear infections…and that’s certainly been our experience with Dr. Martino. Shauna loves going to see ‘Dr. Tino’ and she knows he keeps her ears from hurting. At Shauna’s last checkup, her pediatrician asked how Shauna had gotten over her ear pain. We told her it was all thanks to Dr. Martino!” When Patsy’s husband saw how much better his wife and daughter felt, he made an appointment with Dr. Martino, too. He ground his teeth so badly that he took medication for bruxism, but he hasn’t needed it now that he sees Dr. Martino. Patsy says, “I think my husband’s usually the hardest one to convince, but he absolutely loves Dr. Martino’s down-to-earth, results-oriented approach! He really helps your body heal itself!”

How much does Patsy believe in Dr. Martino? She says, “My two-year-old sees him and I brought my third child to see Dr. Martino at just one-week old. That’s how much I trust the man…I put my newborn child in his hands. I went from feeling awful all the time and really desperate about my daughter to being able to enjoy my life again. It’s Never Too Late L ast month thousands of teenagers made their high school graduation walks across assorted auditoriums and halls throughout the area. Everyone had their own story and sense of accomplishment. One memorable story involves an 18 year old young man in foster care that beat the odds, finished high school and has been accepted to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock this fall. His name is Orriele Gage. Gage participated in a unique ceremony put on by Child Protective Services for him and 166 other young people in foster care who graduated from high school this spring. During this special event he heard his name announced by Channel 2 News Anchor Jerome Gray, was inspired by NBA All-Star and Basketball Hall of Fame member Clyde Drexler, shook hands with Judge Ed Emmett and picked up a diploma signed by Governor Rick Perry. Not bad for someone who’s been “in the system” for 6 years. There are over 1700 children in foster care in the Harris/Fort Bend County area. They are getting older every single day and what that means to some of them, is their hope to be adopted and become a part of a “forever family” is fading. It’s no secret that most adoptive parents are looking for an infant or toddler. Imagine thinking you might be washed up by the age of 6 or 7, and if you’re 12 or older… well, you get the picture. If you are considering adoption, is it
14 ~ upclose ~ July 2010
to enrich your life or the child’s life? What if it could be both? Don’t overlook the possibility that adopting an older child could turn out to be far greater than you ever imagined. Something you didn’t even know you were looking for. To become an adoptive parent you have to be at least 21 years of age, financially stable and a responsible, mature adult. You do not have to be married. It is your willingness to provide a home with daily nurturing and care that makes you a candidate. At the end of the day, without adoption, children “age out” and go on to raise themselves as best as they and the support systems put in place will allow. They could use the support and encouragement of a kind and caring family, a forever family. The people at CPS would like to remind you that it’s never too late to become a part of a child’s life In case you missed it, the June 21st issue of People magazine tells the story about Jimmy Wayne, the country singer who is walking 1,700 miles to raise awareness of teens that age out of foster care and end up homeless. This is a great reminder that everyone needs a forever family. www.adoption.org 1-800-233-3045 Written in collaboration with Kathy Williams, an award-winning news executive with KPRC Local 2.

Getting the Job Done Right I
you!

t’s amazing what new floors can do for your home. From cool, easy-maintenance tile, to elegant wood or plush carpet, the right flooring can brighten up your spirits as much as your house. Watch out, though—if those floors aren’t installed properly, you’ll be down in the dumps in no time. Fortunately, with over 20 years in the business, Bob McKelvey, owner of All About Carpet and Floors, knows how to do the job right. Take tile, for example. It’s a beautiful, easy-living flooring solution that will help keep you plenty cool during the burning-hot summer months. But did you know that, just like with wood, installers need to leave a small gap around the perimeter to allow for natural shifts in your home’s foundation? If they don’t, those gorgeous tiles can buckle and pop loose—and then they don’t seem so gorgeous anymore. “Whenever I call a manufacturer with a question from a customer,” says Bob, “the first thing they ask is, ‘Did you leave room for the floors to expand?’ Manufacturers offer decades of warranties these days, but they’ll be voided in an instant with poor installation. That’s why we use only the most skilled, certified installers, to ensure that the job is done correctly.” With dozens of styles and colors to choose to from in nearly every surface—including porcelain, marble, granite, travertine and more—Bob is no stranger to tile and natural stone. In fact, this month he’s renovating an entire home in tile, complete with floors, kitchen, master bath and fireplace. First, though, he had to make sure that he’d be able to do the job right. “As an older structure, the home had some foundation problems. I told my customer we had to get those issues addressed before we could get started, since we’ll never start a job if we know it’s not going to work out in the long run,” says Bob. Thanks to his expertise, Bob is also accustomed to working with
interior designers, who trust him to get the job done right, on time. This month, for example, he’s working with a local designer on a much-needed, total remodel of a local seminary for Catholic priests. “We’re doing a little bit of everything—tile and granite accents in the kitchen and baths, wood floors in the living areas and carpet in the bedrooms,” he says. “We love to work with designers and watch it all come together, and of course it’s a pleasure to be working with the seminary, too.” From the widest selection to the finest installation, All About Carpet and Floors is our local resource for flooring and remodeling. Stop by their showroom to see what they can offer; they can work with your designer or directly with you to find that perfect look for your home. So stop by the showroom any time Monday – Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00pm and give your spirits a lift this summer, and get the job done right! It’s Getting Hot out Here! T Cara Smith
here’s no denying it: summer’s in full swing and it has most of us running for cover to our cool, airconditioned homes. But when the mercury is maxed out, that generally means our electric bills are, too—and that isn’t such a cool thing. If you really want to stay cool this summer, and put some ice on your electricity usage too, it may be time to upgrade to a high-efficiency model from Trane. “During the summer months, air conditioning makes up more than 60% of the average utilities bill,” says Brian Jackson, owner of Jackson Air, Sugar Land’s oldest independent Trane dealer. “A highefficiency unit can make a huge dent in your bills and let you save more of your hard-earned money.” And despite what you might be thinking, installing it won’t break the bank, either—after all, saving money is the whole point. With Trane special financing

and a federal income tax credit of up to $1,500 on qualifying models, you could have a new air conditioner made in the shade. Whether you put your savings in the bank or toward a much-needed summer break, you’ll feel pretty cool about it. Equally important, Jackson Air is a company you can really count on to service your A/C system, whether you get a new one or stick with the one you’ve already got. A family-run business from the start, they’ve built up their expertise over more than two decades of outstanding service in Fort Bend County. They pride themselves on both their mechanical know-how and their commitment to staying abreast of new energy regulations and technology. This summer, give Jackson Air a call to get set up on a regular maintenance plan to keep your A/C running smoothly and coolly. Or, should an emergency arise,

Do well by doing good A Charlotte Grace s the son of a popular physician in Toronto, Manoj Bhardwaj always dreamed of becoming a doctor like his father. Over the years he watched the care and concern delivered by his father and in return the respect he garnered from an entire community. Big shoes for a young boy, but not too big for the caring, conscientious man he has become. Manoj Bhardwaj has realized the first par t of his dream; he completed his residency in family medicine from Baylor College of Medicine and his residency in internal medicine from Weil-Cornell Methodist Hospital. Cer tified by both the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Bhardwaj has a lot to of fer any one looking for a primar y care physician. He is willing to consider all angles of treatment and acknowledges that things can improve with something as simple as a little personal attention and stress relief. For example, “One of my patients heeded my advice when I told her to take time for herself and look for ways to de-stress; within 6 months she was able to get off her blood pressure medicine.” Treating adults and children 11 and older, Dr. Bhardwaj has discovered the art of medicine can sometimes include being willing to be silly to help patients relax.
His warm personality and gentle nature makes it easy for people to feel comfortable and open up. He really likes to connect with his patients and build their trust. Though he’s too modest to mention it himself, Dr. Bhardwaj’s generosity and caring spirit go beyond his office hours. He regularly volunteers at a local charity clinic and he is a part of a team of doctors that donate their time during natural disasters like the recent earthquake in Haiti. And that’s why we are lucky to have a fine doctor who has chosen to honor his father and his fellow man. Beginning in July, you can see Dr. Bhardwaj at his new Sugar Land office at The Woman’s Place on the north side of Highway 59 between Highway 6 and First Colony Boulevard. here do you go if your child is sensitive to dyes, gluten or other additives typically found in medications? What do you do when the precise dosage of the drug you need is not commercially available? How do you find your Armour Thyroid when there’s a national shortage? You call our local expert, Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph.—he has the answers! As a compounding pharmacist, Dr. Campbell has the training and expertise to create medications with only the ingredients you need…and none of the ones that you don’t. He says, “When I was attending the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, I realized that compounding was on the cutting edge of pharmacy. Working together with local doctors, I’m able to find creative, effective ways to help people. My primary goal is to always give my patients more alternatives to improve their lives.” He adds, “Even before I graduated from U of H, I got involved with the Professional Compounding Centers of America, which focuses on quality, education, and consulting for compounding pharmacists. After graduation, I worked for several compounding pharmacies before opening Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in the Rice Village and Sugar Land. Now I’m proud to serve as a preceptor, allowing students in their final year of pharmacy school to come and be trained at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. It’s my way of giving back to the University of Houston and to Texas Southern.” Dr. Campbell knows your medicine inside and out; and he also knows the ins-and-outs of helping people enjoy the service at Campbell’s Compounding. He says, “I’ve always believed
the secret to success in business and in life is just the same: treat others the way you would want to be treated. In addition to serving on the Dean’s Advisory Committee, I’ve also served on the Ethics Committee at the University of Houston. I’m committed to running an ethical business that really benefits the community.” “My wife, my four and a half-year-old Cole, my three year-old Chloe, and I are welcoming baby Caleb to our family on June 28th. First Impressions Cara Smith
A
lthough it’s what’s inside that really counts, we all know how important the first impression is. Whether we’re applying for a new job, meeting a potential client, or going out on a blind date, that first impression sets the tone. And no one knows this better than local businessman, Trent Garrett. When Trent developed a problem with his molars, he turned to the dentist he knew he could trust, Dr. Purvi Parikh of A to Z Dental. Having some experience with dentists in the past, Mr. Garrett really appreciated the time and care offered by the entire A to Z team. He said, “If it wasn’t for her staff and their kindness and professionalism, I wouldn’t even have had the work done. These people are great,” Trent added, “This reconstructive work was not covered by my insurance. Dr. Parikh worked with me on a payment plan that was manageable.” Even though this wasn’t something he was looking forward to, Trent said the
entire experience was pleasant. “They made me feel really comfortable. Dr. Parikh talked me through the entire process.” Dr. Parikh and Dr. Hakki collaborated on the extensive reconstruction surgery performed on Trent, providing him with a skillful and straightforward service. “I recommend her to everybody, I really do.” As a mother of three, Dr. Parikh can relax the most anxious patient—child or adult. After earning her degree from the New York College of Dentistry in 2001, she began living her dream of becoming a dentist. Not long ago, she and her family moved to the Sugar Land area to be closer to other family members. Her business partner, Dr. Hakki sets the very same high standards with his periodontal work so everyone can feel at ease while in his chair. One piece of advice both doctors agree on: the importance of biannual checkups. Just like changing batteries in a smoke detector, scheduling your appointments is the best way to detect problems
before they have the chance to develop into something bigger. Whether you need a routine cleaning, a specific tooth treated, restorative work, or a cosmetic procedure, A to Z Dental can help you achieve whatever goal you have in mind and help you create a really great first impression. f your daughter can’t keep her hands off the markers or your son’s eye for color shines through his finger painting, isn’t it time to take that talent a little further? We’re lucky to have a convenient and professional art studio with an award-winning Chinese artist right here in Sugar Land. At Heather’s Art Studio, Ying He (known as Heather) helps students of every age master the foundational skills for drawing and painting…and unleash the artist within! At Heather’s classes at the Talent Academy on Highway 6, beginners as young as five years old start with color pencils, charcoal, or markers as they work to master drawing subjects like fun animals. Older students explore more techniques like oil painting and acrylics and experiment with a variety of subjects. Adults interested in getting in touch with their inner artist can contact Heather to schedule private or semi-private lessons in drawing, painting, or sculpture. Each student gets personal attention while learning the traditional skills that are the foundation of artistic expression. Heather says, “We take the time to master the basics, but there’s always room for creativity as well. I try to adapt to each student’s level of ability and aptitude. The real reason I enjoy teaching is because I love sharing my passion for art with other people. When children are inspired by art, they’re so enthusiastic…it’s wonderful to see!” Before making a name for herself by winning awards and exhibiting her paintings in China, Los Angeles, New Mexico, and here in Texas, Heather was a little girl who loved to draw. “When I was twelve, I used my mother’s leftover paint, pencils and paper to copy the work she and her artist friends created. At seventeen I went to Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art and studied oil painting. As a teacher at Henan University, I was named Best Instructor and I knew I’d found my calling. Teaching really opens my eyes and helps me grow as an artist. Turn Things Around Next School Year Sarah Warburton f you have a motivated child who loves to learn, this summer is the perfect time to ask yourself: Did you get what you wanted out of school last year? Carol Appelbaum, the co-founder of a world-renown educational training company, created the Turning Point Academy to give students a co-ed private school that will really prepare them for success in college…and in life! “As a parent,” Carol says, “I couldn’t find the kind of school I wanted for my own daughter. My husband and I have trained teachers for over 20 years, so we decided to blend the best educational models for a boutique learning experience that really benefits today’s middle and high school students. Along with the pleasure of learning in a home with spectacular views, our students have the prestige of working towards college at an early age. As we grow and expand, we look forward to moving to a facility, but we’ll always provide a low student to teacher ratio.” Begin with the end in mind… and you’ll achieve your goals! Each student takes the PSAT yearly and works with an active educational team online as well as their education mentor. The Turning Point Academy’s curriculum is recog-

nized by the College Board and the Educational Testing Service. Included in your tuition are all the specialists that visit, the field trips, and TPA’s most unique advantage, one-on-one help with college SAFE (Selection, Application, Financial opportunities, and Enrollment). Each student and their parents are personally consulted to map out a plan for high school completion with honors and a detailed plan for college enrollment that the student’s educational team holds the student accountable to daily. What else does the Turning Point Academy do differently? Kids are taught to be pro-active thinkers, how to learn, and how to find the answers…to any question. They take ownership of their learning by mastering organization, goalsetting, and weekly planning—habits necessary for college and future employment! Working in a block schedule of three two-hour classes each day closely parallels the structure of college courses and allows students to accelerate their learning. No course is complete until a student completely masters the material. Carol says, “You won’t find test shortcuts like matching, true-false or multiple choice, so students really learn each subject before moving on. Many of our students complete high school courses early and continue on to challenging college courses… which looks fantastic on their college applications!” Can you imagine a middle school or

high school without the drama in the hallways? With absolutely no bullying, no peer pressure, and no homework? When Channel 2 News Anchor Rachel McNeill interviewed
Carol and Turning Point Academy students, they had plenty to say! “We are very social in appropriate ways and no one drags us down. We haven’t been removed or weren’t outcasts at our former schools…we were just bored!” Carol says, “We’re helping students become leaders in life at the Turning Point Academy.” The Turning Point Academy 281-780-8713 Now enrolling for 2010-2011 www.TheTurningPointAcademy.org

Preserving Fertility Sarah Warburton

hen you undergo chemotherapy, it can result in a loss of ovarian function…essentially sending you into early menopause. But one patient who received a diagnosis of breast
cancer had her dreams of a having a child come true…thanks to amazing advances in the fields of fertility and genetics and the dedication of Dr. George Grunert, the medical team at MD Anderson and Baylor, and his associates at the Fertility Specialists of Houston. Forethought is the secret behind this success story. As founder and medical director of FSH, Dr. Grunert wants you to consider “banking” your fertility. He says, “If you’re able to make the time before the treatment, we can offer you options. Before you start your treatment, you may be a candidate for freezing your eggs or even embryos. This patient and her husband chose to freeze their embryos. Two years after she completed her chemotherapy, her doctor gave her the go-ahead for a pregnancy.” When Dr. Grunert was informed of the cause of this young patient’s breast cancer, he decided on further testing. She was a carrier of BRCA-1, a genetic mutation that drastically increases the risks of developing breast and ovarian cancer… and she could pass it on to her children. He says, “We were able to screen her embryos for BRCA-1 and only implant

the unaffected ones. She’s conceived and is currently enjoying the blessing of a healthy pregnancy.” New advances in genetics testing eliminate the agony of passing on this gene to a child…that’s an added peace of mind. Dr. Grunert says, “Currently we’ve identified almost 20,000 genetic diseases (not all fatal) and we can screen and only transfer embryos that will result in a healthy child. In fact, with a simple saliva test we’ll determine if you are a carrier for any of the one hundred most common genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, sickle cell and Tay-Sachs that can be passed on in pregnancy. Helping patients who otherwise could not have had a child conceive is one of the most gratifying experiences in my life!” Fertility Specialists of Houston is working with Livestrong Foundation to assist patients in need to keep their options open regarding fertility preservation. As Dr. Grunert says, “We’d like everyone to know that with a little advance planning…your dreams of a family could come true!” Fertility Specialists of Houston 4724 Sweetwater Blvd, Ste 105 Sugar Land, TX 77479 832-553-5IVF (5483) www.fshivf.com
