A special thank you to the Fort Bend Junior Service League members who are the faces of the Methodist Women’s Health Campaign.

“I was fortunate to have my radiation treatment completed close to home at the Methodist Sugar Land Cancer Center. Avoiding the drive and parking to the Medical Center, was not only convenient, but allowed me to focus more on healing and winning my battle against breast cancer. Because Methodist has brought the Breast Center to Sugar Land, it has been very easy for me to continue with my breast imaging follow-up appointments.” Lisa Ashton, Breast Cancer Survivor

“Getting diagnosed with breast cancer is shocking, but at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital I felt like I was in the hands of friends that cared. The doctors and staff truly cared how I felt and what I was thinking. They cared enough to spend the time to really talk with me and answer my many questions. I trusted the multi-disciplinary team of specialists at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital with my life, and today I can say, ‘I am a breast cancer survivor!’” Terri Sitter, Breast Cancer Survivor

T

he Breast Center at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital offers women a lifesaving difference – it’s the only full-service diagnostic and treatment center of its kind in Fort Bend County, featuring compassionate, personal care led by board-certified physicians and supported by state-ofthe-art technology. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, with more than 200,000 cases discovered in the U.S. each year. The good news is that death rates from breast cancer have been declining in the U.S. in recent years, due in large part to early detection through screening mammograms. That’s why Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and the Fort Bend Junior Service League have teamed up to spread the word that early detection – through today’s powerful imaging technologies only available at the Methodist Breast Center – can make all the difference. “We’re so proud to partner with Methodist Sugar Land Hospital as we reach out to educate, motivate and support our community,” says Pam Spencer, President of the Fort Bend Junior Service League. “Having supported friends and family through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, I really understand the importance of early detection and the benefit of having a resource like the Methodist Breast Center in our community.” Staffed by experienced, highly skilled breast radiologists using the latest technology – including a powerful 3-Tesla MRI that features outstanding resolution, bi-lateral breast imaging and motion correction – the Breast Center at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital offers women the best diagnostic services available in Fort Bend. “Our patients are cared for by a multi-disciplinary team of breast specialists who work together to provide the most comprehensive treatment Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Breast Center • 16655 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77479 • 281-242-PINK (7465) • MethodistSugarLand.com

possible, all in one convenient location,” says Stephen Phillips, M.D., board certified breast radiologist. “We provide the full continuum of care – from screening all the way through surgery and/or radiation – all in one place. Having a dedicated center enables our physicians to communicate with one another more effectively and coordinate care more efficiently, which means that women are able to begin treatment immediately.” Since opening its doors on August 1, 2009, the Methodist Breast Center has grown rapidly, and recently moved to a new location off Town Center Boulevard on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus. The larger space features a warm, comforting ambiance and more comfortable, spa-like furnishings to put patients at ease. “We are thrilled to help spread the word about the importance of mammography and honored to be working with Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, a hospital with a prestigious reputation based on a history of quality care and state-of-the-art technology,” says Brigit Engleman, past president of the Fort Bend Junior Service League. The Fort Bend Junior Service League will continue to work with Methodist Sugar Land Hospital to promote early detection, with a goal of reaching all Fort Bend women with information and support.

You could make a difference in your own life. Call 281-242-PINK (7465) and schedule your mammogram today. The Breast Center at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is making a difference, a lifesaving difference!

A Case of Mistaken Identity Sarah Warburton ow can you tell if a business has really changed hands? Gilbert Lee wasn’t convinced by a new coat of a paint and a new name….he just couldn’t believe that Classic Chevrolet was absolutely new to Fort Bend. Every morning he drove his Chevy right past Classic Chevrolet on his way to work and when it was time for service he’d drive for miles out of his way to go someplace else. He says, “I figured that even with a new name, it was just the same old monkeys running the asylum on the inside.” One day, as he was driving along Highway 59, the water pump on his Suburban started to fail…right at the exit for Classic Chevy. At Classic Chevy’s service department, his service advisor, Kevan, handled the write up. Gilbert said, “As Kevan was doing the write up on the water pump, I described some of the other issues I had and he knew exactly what each and every problem was. Throughout my service, Kevan kept me up to date on what was going on, so I didn’t have to call to get updates. If all service advisors were as knowledgeable as Kevan and treated customers the way he did, dealerships would have a lot more happy customers. After this recent experience, I don’t have to go out of my

H

way to get my vehicles serviced! Just as long as Kevan is there, I’ll make the trip to your Classic Chevy…and I’ll let my buddies know it is truly a different kind of business.” What’s in a name? When the name is Classic Chevrolet…that says it all. Classic Chevy’s owner, Don Kerstetter says, “I cherish this man’s business, and look for-

ward to earning it all over again with each visit he makes. We are doing everything we can to get the word out about who we are…and who we are not! It will only happen when satisfied customers give us the highest compliment of a referral of friends or family members to our business. Rest assured we will live up to our obligations in that regard, and if anything is ever less than satisfactory; we will do everything we can to make it right. We are a proud member of the Durant Auto Group whose philosophy of putting the customer first has made their location up in Grapevine the top selling dealership in the country for years. Our success is based on our transparency, efficiency and customer satisfaction. We understand how difficult it is to earn customer faith, but we are committed to making it happen…one customer at a time.” “Whether you come to us for a new or used car, service or repair, we’re proud to be a family-owned Fort Bend Business,” says Don. “We want to earn your loyalty for the long-term with our huge selection, low prices, community spirit…and the decent way we treat people!” Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land 13115 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77478 Sales: (866) 498-5485 Service: (866) 500-1660

Body by Ahmadi

What if the Impossible Body was Actually Possible?

Donnielle Carter

“H

ow does one even begin to thank someone for giving them a body they never even dreamed was possible? This is what you have done for me!” was how one patient expressed her gratitude to Dr. Ahmadi of Avante Plastic Surgery. “As a teen or even a 5’6” - 111 pound woman, I never had the figure I have now. I never had a flat stomach or an hour glass shape.” What is she referring to? She is talking about pioneering plastic surgeon Dr. Ahmadi’s signature miracle procedure the Lipotuck™. The Lipotuck™ is a one stage procedure that Dr. Ahmadi himself created that combines liposuction with tightening of the skin, to provide a flatter stomach and a more streamlined waistline. The procedure also addresses the upper abdomen, hips and love handles area that a traditional tummy tuck does not, all with a superior result and a quicker recovery time. “I tell those that are thinking of having a tummy tuck that they must see you about your Lipotuck™ procedure. The before and after pictures were the best I’ve ever seen and my results have been beyond wonderful and exceeded my expectations!” Dr. Ahmadi is a double board certified plastic surgeon and Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In addition to the miraculous Lipotuck™, he performs many kinds of procedures including; facelifts, nose reshaping, breast augmentations, reductions, and lifts. The patient goes on to say she chose Dr. Ahmadi for one simple but significant reason, “I came to you because of your philosophy. Not only do you focus on the results of a flat stomach, you strive to achieve something more – something better. Something I didn’t even know it was possible to dream of.” How is her life now? “The results have changed my level of confidence beyond belief. I love the way my husband looks at me now with this sweet, playful smile followed by, ‘I love your body.’ Thank you, Dr. Ahmadi.” Do you have that dream body in your mind that you have convinced yourself isn’t possible? ould you like to end each and every day with intense pain, fatigue and aching in your legs? That is exactly what Gary Blanchette was doing before visiting Dr. Ulises Baltazar. Gary knew the varicose veins in his legs were hereditary, both his mother and sister suffered from them and he had been dealing with it for over 20 years. “I felt like I was caring 20 extra pounds in my legs.” Many years ago he had some work done on his left leg but had less than desirable results. Recommended by a medical professional friend and his general practitioner, Gary sought out the expertise of Dr. Baltazar. Dr. Baltazar is certified by The American Board of Surgery in both General and Vascular Surgery and is dedicated exclusively to the treatment of varicose veins. During Gary’s first consultation, Dr. Baltazar took an ultrasound and was able to recognize and diagnose something that had previously gone undiagnosed. Gary’s varicose veins

In fact, it was such a serious case that Dr. Baltazar outlined a treatment plan that had Gary coming in for 4 different treatments. “Dr. Baltazar was so methodical and took such time and care during and after each procedure that he was able to take care of my veins in only 3 of the 4 planned sessions.”

I feel like I have a new set of legs. “Just two weeks after my final procedure I spent the weekend being active, working at a trade show and doing yard work. I ended each day without being worn out and in

Are You Off Balance? O Sarah Warburton ur local Orthopaedist and Lower Extremity specialist Dr. Mark Vann, MD says, “Muscle imbalance is a major contributor to the formation of hammer or claw toes, but often the problem is made worse by poorly fitting shoes. Muscles that allow the toes to bend

(flex) and grip the ground must be precisely balanced by opposing muscles that allow the toes to extend. An imbalance between either of these sets of muscles can lead to the development of toe deformities. Hammer and Claw toes are common deformities of the second through fourth digits. They are classified as flexible or stiff,

and often have corns or calluses associated with them. Hammer toes are identified by a bend in the middle joint, with relative straightening of the furthest toe joint. Claw toes are unique in that the middle and furthest joints are bent, allowing your toes to “curl under”, while the joint attaching the toe to the foot is often extended, creating a “C” shaped deformity. Dr. Vann says, “By the time most people come to the office, they’ve already tried changes in shoe wear, stretching, exercises and remedies such as cushions and corrective devices, without success.” As a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Vann has extensive experience in the latest and most effective surgical solutions for simple, complex and previously failed lower extremity surgery. He says, “Most patients are relieved to learn that hammer and claw toe corrective surgery can be done on an outpatient basis. The exact procedure and the length of recovery depend on the extent of the problem. I’m always happy to review the options with you, so you’ll be completely comfortable with the course of action we choose.”

Making Life Easy

aking good care of your health can literally add years to your life…but dealing with the stress of haggling with insurance or trying to figure out the “hidden costs” can make you put off making your appointment. Local family physician, Dr. Jeffrey Alford says, “I wanted to make it easy and uncomplicated for people to participate in preventative health care. Through my Wellness Program I’m pleased to offer simple, fairly priced health exam packages for patients…and we’re taking insurance companies right out of the picture.” Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss Program caters to 4 types of individuals: those who do not have health insurance, those with insurance that does not cover preventative care, those with insurance with a high deductible and those individuals with insurance who are tired of health care denials. What is preventative health care? Dr. Alford says, “A thorough examination, medical history, your EKG and medical testing can assess the state of your health before you have a catastrophic event. Often, simple lifestyle changes like diet and exercise will halt or reverse problems. Many health issues—high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke— can be helped by early detection and intervention. Assessing where you are now helps us prevent more serious health incidents down the line.” The tests needed for preventative maintenance on your body depend on your gender, age, and family history. Dr. Alford says, “We’ll have a simple menu of tests available for different ages and genders. You can opt for the basic recommended tests or the comprehensive package…and you’ll know upfront exactly what it will cost. No hidden fees. Everything will be included and easy to understand…your cost and your results!” Want to live a long, healthy life? Dr. Alford says, “Getting your preventative examination will save you time, money, and pain later in life. Take charge of your wellness with our new preventative health options!”

Tiny Teeth Matter Too

Sarah Warburton

D

id you know that baby teeth aren’t expendable? Dr. Bianca Sanchez of Little People’s Dentistry says, “Kids need strong, healthy teeth for chewing, speaking, and smiling confidently...and baby teeth also keep a space in the jaw for the adult teeth. When a baby tooth is lost too early, adult teeth may end up crooked or crowded. Preventing cavities start with good dental hygiene and regular check-ups…and we make both of those fun!” When that first little tooth peeks out from your baby’s gum…it’s at risk for decay. Dr. Sanchez says, “Parents are surprised that infants and toddlers run the risk of ‘Baby Bottle Tooth Decay.’ A primary cause of tooth decay is exposure of baby’s teeth to sugary liquids like sweetened water and fruit juice, milk, breast milk and formula. Never put your baby to bed with a bottle or use a bottle as a pacifier. The sugary liquids pool around the teeth while the child sleeps, feeding bacteria that produce acids that attack the teeth.” Protect your baby’s teeth with a toothbrush! After each feeding, wipe baby’s gums with a clean, damp gauze pad or washcloth and gently brush those baby teeth with water as they appear. Once your child can spit and not swallow toothpaste (usually sometime after age two), begin brushing with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Dr. Sanchez says, “Brush your child’s teeth until he or she has enough manual dexterity to write clearly in cursive...and help your child with flossing as well!” “When your baby gets his or her first tooth,” says Dr. Sanchez, “come see me...and remember, tooth decay is preventable with good dental health habits!”

Dr. Bianca Sanchez , a mother herself, understands the importance of creating a safe and comfortable environment for children. Her gentle and soothing manner makes children, and parents alike, feel at ease. Have you heard about the newest addition to Little People’s Dentistry, Dr. G. Radford? With over thirty years experience in pediatric dentistry and over twenty years experience in orthodontics, he’ll be offering orthodontic exams and braces at Little People’s Dentistry starting this June. Have you had your air conditioner checked? Brian Jackson, owner of Jackson Air suggests, “Make sure you stay comfortable this summer. Give your old air conditioner a tune up. What Causes April Showers? Sarah Warburton

W

hat’s the number one reason people call a plumber? Local plumbing expert and Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing says, “Nine times out of ten when we get a call, it’s a customer seeing water where it outta be dry. Leaky faucets, running toilets, water coming down the wall…we can handle all that. The second reason most people call us is when something doesn’t work like it should. We always get a lot of calls about hot water heaters and garbage disposals.” Where’s that water coming from? Build up in your air conditioner lines can cause sinks to back up or water to trickle down from the ceiling. Moisture from a damaged hose bed could evaporate before you notice it, but it can damage your wall and add to your water bill. A damaged toilet, a leaky tap in the kitchen or a dripping faucet outside can give you puddles and cost you money. Taking care of a little leak up front keeps it from becoming a bigger structural problem down the road. Alan says, “We’ll get to the root of the problem and we’re also happy to track down

and knock out several smaller jobs on a single visit.” Is your hot water heater putting out cold water or is your garbage disposal all choked up? For safety

reasons, give Alan’s Plumbing a call to install a new one. Alan will get you set up with a new hot water heater, new pan and new connections...for another decade filled with hot showers and peace of mind. And unclogging or installing a garbage disposal is fast work for these experts. Alan says, “We pride ourselves on making your life easier by doing each job promptly and professionally at a fair price.” What’s the number one reason people call Alan’s Plumbing? For quality work done by an honest family-owned business that’s been working and living right here for over twelve years. Trust your home to Fort Bend’s favorite plumbing company. Take Off the Miles with a Brand New Smile!

Sarah Warburton re you looking for that fountain of youth? Nothing rolls back the years like a gorgeous smile…and nothing adds unwanted miles like worn or missing teeth. The best anti-aging secret around is waiting for you at the office of Dr. Thomas Lomonte. He says, “We have a ‘Smile Room’ where I love seeing the look on people’s faces when they realized the difference a spruced-up smile can make. My goal is always to make my patients feel happy and confident in letting their inner light shine.” Over time our teeth can change and this changes our appearance. Teeth shorten, become uneven and stained, our gums recede and gaps appear between teeth. Dr. Lomonte says, “I’ve had patients come in who feel self-conscious about their smiles… and the effect it has on their lower face. Without the support of teeth, the area around the mouth starts to wrinkle and the tissue of your lips straightens and may curve downward over shortened teeth. Porcelain veneers can add thickness to your lips and lower face…reducing wrinkles, smoothing upper and lower lip wrinkles, and adding fullness. re you afraid to hide an Easter egg because you might not be able to stand up straight again? If golfing is a distant memory and you can’t get out of bed without pain, your life needs an adjustment! Dr. Stacy Croft of Sugar Land Spine and Disc says, “If you’ve been living with the kind of back pain that keeps you from enjoying life, we’ve got a non-invasive solution that fits nicely with anyone’s schedule. Come see us at Sugar Land Spine and Disc and we’ll give your life an adjustment… for the better!” From struggling to get dressed in the morning to suffering in front of your computer to the agony of sitting on the bleachers at a Little League game, back pain sucks the joy out of your day. If you’re afraid that the only solutions are narcotic medication or surgery, we’ve found another answer that offers safe, effective relief. Dr. Stacy says, “I know our busy patients don’t want to put their life on hold any longer…and the Lordex Decompression System may be the perfect solution. I’ve seen it work over and over again…even on people who were actually scheduled for back surgery before the Lordex took their pain away.” Getting rid of the pain starts with getting to the root of the problem…not just treating the symptoms. Dr. Michele says, “We’ll begin with an MRI to see what’s really going on. Our Lordex Decompression System treats a variety of back pain caused by degenerated, bulging, or herniated discs, facet syndromes, sciatica, failed spinal surgery, and spinal stenosis. It works by creating a slight vacuum to open up the space between the discs and relieve the pressure. Once blood and nerve flow to the injured area is restored, your body begins to heal. After you do a half an hour on the machine, you’ll perform a half an hour of exercises to build the weak muscles around your spine. Dr. Michele says, “We’ll fix your pain for the shortterm…but we’ll also correct the problem so it doesn’t reoccur again!” Pain doesn’t have to be a fact of life and fixing it won’t take a trip to the hospital or a lengthy recovery. Each Lordex session lasts about an hour and most patients start to feel relief after only a few sessions. Dr. Stacy says, “Both Dr. Michele and I entered this field so we could help people who were suffering. We’ve had patients who’d lost hope they’d ever find relief…and the Lordex took their pain away completely. I really believe at Sugar Land Spine and Disc we can relieve your back pain partially or completely…without narcotics or surgery!” If your life needs an adjustment, what are you waiting for? All you have to lose is the pain! Dr. Stacy says, “Give us a call to schedule your free consultation and evaluation at Sugar Land Spine and Disc.”

hen local resident Becky Joiner bought her new home she knew she had the opportunity to make the house her own before she moved in. Relying on a friend’s recommendation,

Becky went in to see Bob and Renee McKelvey at All About Carpet and Floors, Sugar Land’s premiere destination for flooring, tiling, and remodeling. “The first time I walked into the showroom I got such a good feeling from the people there. They really created a comfort zone for me.” Becky knew remodeling every room in the house including the bedrooms, bathroom, living room and kitchen would be a huge undertaking and was feeling a bit weighed down. “I just wanted someone to do all of this for me so I didn’t have to manage it all. I knew remodeling could be an exasperating task but with All About Carpet I didn’t worry that it wouldn’t be done right.” With customer satisfaction number one in mind Bob has compiled an extensive network of expert and reputable trades people and contractors to see to any remodeling need you might have. “Bob was great, he was constantly calling me and giving me

updates of the progress.” All About Carpet has been a family owned and operated Sugar Land business for over 20 years and when you work with them, you become a part of their family. “Every time I called they knew me and about me. When I didn’t show up with my sister they asked about her. That kind of awareness of customers is rare now a days and was a real nice change for me. It’s the kind of family business that you don’t see anymore and I knew I could rely on them to know what they were doing and do it well.” Offering many styles of wood, granite and flooring the in-store and field technicians are trained to tackle any project, answer any question and help you in every way possible. “There were so many different options to choose from and I had no clue. But they kindly and graciously offered their expertise and guided me through the process. We laughed and made a big mess but had a great time.” Now living happily in her remodeled home that is exactly to her tastes and liking, Becky describes All About Carpet and Floor’s level of work as outstanding, atten-

tive, and first-class. Becky tells people, “If you have remodeling work to do run don’t walk to All About Carpet and Floors. They want to make sure you get what you want and that you’re completely happy with it.” If it’s time to update one room or your entire home, run on by the All About Carpet and Floors showroom anytime Monday-Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm and let the McKelvey family team welcome you and see how they can assist you in making your house a home to be proud of.

Babe Ruth, Sammy Davis, Jr., Eddie Van Halen and Lana Turner Sarah Warburton hese are just a few of the more famous people whose lives have been affected by oral cancer. Today one American dies every hour of every day from oral cancer. Dr. Marty Powell of Powell Dentistry says, “April is National Oral Cancer Awareness month and the number one spot for oral cancer is underneath the back of your tongue. You’ll need a hygienist or dentist like me or my wife Dr. Laurena Moore Powell to identify it. A typical oral cancer screening in our office takes less than five minutes of your total exam time…but it could save your life!” Oral cancer strikes men twice as often as it does women, but oral cancer in women is on the rise. Dr. Moore Powell says, “If oral cancer is detected early, it’s ninety percent curable. Unfortunately, seventy percent are detected late. Our hope is that through raising awareness, we can increase the survival rate. After all, when people became aware about the importance of pap smears for detecting cervical cancer, the PSA for detecting prostate cancer, and the mammogram

T

for detecting breast cancer, the survival rate for those diseases increased. We want to make sure your smile is as healthy and happy for years to come!” Keeping your smile strong and healthy for life starts with choosing a dentist you trust. Dr. Moore Powell says, “Our philosophy is embedded in our name: P-O-W-E-L-L Dental Care. P for Prevention, O for Options, and WELL for keeping your smile well and healthy. We’re committed to listening to our patients so that we can offer the right preventative solutions in a clear, stress-free way.” Dr. Marty adds, “No matter how bad a situation may seem, there is usually more than one way to change things for the better. We believe the same is true for oral health care, so we always offer you a variety of options.” Celebrate Oral Cancer Awareness month

Do You Know How to Protect Your Sight? Sarah Warburton

C

hanges in your vision are caused by more than sitting too close to the computer or forgetting your sunglasses. Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source says, “Wearing UV protective sunglasses year round and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables are important daily habits for the health of your eyes…but hormonal changes, smoking, and aging can also endanger your sight. Come and see me annually so I can detect, track, and treat problems early.” As your hormonal levels change, so does your vision. Dr. Doan says, “In the case of pregnancy and birth control pills, these vision changes are usually temporary. Estrogen controls your tear glands, so many menopausal women will develop dry eyes. Grave’s Disease or hyperthyroidism can cause inflammation of the tissues around the eyes and bulging of the eyes called thyroid eye disease. Once we identify hormonal changes as the root of your vision problems, I can offer treatment or a referral.” Smoking is hazardous to your body…and your eyes! In addition to chronic redness and irritation of the eyes, people who smoke have four times the risk of developing macular degeneration, increased risk of cataracts, and vascular disease. Dr. Doan says, “Smoking decreases blood flow throughout the body which can cause damage to your optic •

nen co r g o r t Es tea your any s l o tr m s, so al d n a l g paus meno n will e wom ry eyes. lop d deve nerve. In addition, if you are diagnosed with Grave’s disease, you are at a much higher risk of developing thyroid eye disease if you smoke.” Aging can bring aches and pain to your joints and challenges for your eyes. Dr. Doan says,

Pre-K to 8th Grade

“Presbyopia (age-related far-sightedness) isn’t classified as a disease, since it can be fixed with a good pair of reading glasses or multi-focal lenses. Cataracts are normal aging changes where the lens inside the eyes turns cloudy. Just about everyone will experience this after the age of 60. Fortunately, cataracts can be surgically removed and many times vision will be restored. Diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration (currently the leading cause of blindness among American seniors), and diabetic retinopathy are more serious since any vision loss is permanent and not reversible. Preventative vision exams at least once a year are the best way to catch a disease in the early stages and protect your sight!” Dr. Anh Doan, Therapeutic Optometrist Vision Source! 281-261-2647 4725 Highway 6 South www.visionsourcemissouricity.com

here’s the fun in keeping a great local hangout all to yourself? We’ve found the kind of place you’ll want to bring your friends and family to unwind after work, catch up over lunch, or relax on a lazy weekend. At Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant, Lupe Garcia uses recipes handed down for generations and grinds her own spices for amazing authenticity and flavor. Now we’ll let you in on a few of the “off-menu” secret specials at Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant, home of the freshest food at the best prices!

At Lupita’s food is as colorful, delicious and spicy as life itself. The secret’s out about Lupita’s luscious, creamy avocado stuffed with your choice of fajita beef, chicken, or veggies. Those “in the know” also love the new lunch spe-

cial “chicken fideo,” an authentic Mexican spaghetti dish. Ready for more? Lupe used one of her secret recipes for the amazing Camarones Ranchero, a shrimp dish with tomatoes, onions, and tantalizing spices. She says, “For the month of April we’ll be offering our shrimp Ranchero and several other seafood specials, but you’ll need to check the board or ask your server…just like our stuffed avocado, they aren’t on the official menu yet.” Looking for your new favorite place for Happy Hour? Enjoy all-day Happy Hour pricing on beer and margaritas Monday through Thursday at Lupita’s and weekend Happy Hours from 4-7. Relax with Lupe’s smoky charro beans and warm piquante salsa with roasted tomatoes made on-site daily…and absolutely addicting with an icy margarita and a basket of crispy tortilla chips! Are you entertaining over the Easter holidays? Lupe’s husband Jaime, says, “Every dish Lupe makes brings people together. We’ll help you out with to-go orders or catering for a family event, a corporate meeting, or a big party. You send the invitations, we’ll handle the fajitas…for fiestas of any size! And we’d like all our customers to know that by popular demand we’re back to the original beef you love in Lupe’s signature fajitas. Don’t worry… we won’t change the recipe or the prices!”

Amazing Camarones Ranchero Jaime, Lupe, Rigo and Leo Garcia say, “We humbly thank you for seven wonderful years of loyalty and support…from our family to yours!” Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant 281-265-6556 Southeast corner of Hwy 6 & Williams Trace www.lupitassugarland.com

Giving Back to the Community Sarah Warburton veryone knows someone whose life has been touched by pain…and relieving pain is the mission at Back Pain Interventions. Dr. Mark Brown dedicates himself to freeing people from their back pain and getting them back to their lives. Now he, his wife Cathy, and their whole office invite you to join them in the 2011 Relay for Life event. Cathy says, “The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be

eliminated. We hope you’ll come out for the event, visit our team website, and lend your support to this inspiring cause.” By day this amazing office provides solutions for people who’ve been living with debilitating back pain. But by night (on one night-April 29th) they brave the elements and walk the walk to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Cathy says, “From 7pm to 7am at Oyster Creek Park our team will camp out and take turns walking around the track. My co-captain, Kelly Matherly, designed team shirts for our Back Pain Intervention team with the motto ‘Energize Us.’ We’ll keep going and going and going…and we hope you’ll join us!” As a double-board certified physician, Dr. Brown has a heart for helping others. He says, “As an office, we’re excited about the opportunity to join together with our community. I’d love to see the day when this disease will no longer threaten the lives of our loved ones or claim another year of anyone’s life. Saving lives from cancer starts one team, one participant, and

New Study Reveals More About Depression D

Sarah Warburton id you ever wish your kids came with early warning systems? A new study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry reveals one heads-up that your daughter might eventually suffer from depression. Dr. Leslie Cohan of The Woman’s Place says, “We’re always looking for new ways to predict, explain, and treat depression. This new study seems to show a link between early menstruation and symptoms of depression.” Over two thousand girls took part in this study to examine the connection between the time of the first period and depressive symptoms. Dr. Cohan explains, “On average, girls in this study got their first period when they were twelve and half. The study suggests that girls who started their periods a year earlier than this average had the most intense symptoms of depression at ages thirteen and fourteen. Girls who started a year later than the average showed the least symptoms of depression.” What does this study really mean? Dr. Cohan says, “As girls transition into puberty, they struggle with physical, emotional, and social changes. This study suggests that early maturation makes these changes even more difficult…and that’s where having alert, supportive parents and a strong network of friends and positive activities can make a real difference. It’s especially important to have an existing relationship with a health provider that you and your daughter trust. When we do our first exam, generally it’s a ‘get-to-know-you’ visit without a pelvic exam. If there are problems with menstruation or you have questions about using protection, I want all my patients to feel comfortable talking with me honestly.”

Dr. Cohan says, “Celebrate and Educate” your daughters, nieces, and granddaughters early for what is biologically expected to occur. If you’re worried about a possible link between early menstruation and depression, come see Dr. Cohan. She says, “Changes in behavior, eating and sleeping patterns, and performance at school can be indications of a bigger problem…depression, anemia, thyroid disorders, or something else. Talk with me and I’ll review your symptoms, give you a physical exam, and recommend treatment or refer you to a specialist if needed…that’s exactly what I’m here to do!” The Woman’s Place (affiliated with the Woman’s Hospital of Texas) 713-795-0349 16552 Southwest Freeway Sugar Land, TX 77479 http://drcohan.womanshealthgroup.com/
