hen a great detective is on a case, he doesn't just look at a single clue and jump to a conclusion. He consults with experts and studies the puzzle, until he understands the big picture. If you're suffering from weight gain, fatigue, irritation, dull skin, hair loss, blood pressure fluctuation, and any number of other symptoms, you need a "health detective" to solve the mystery of your broken (biological) clock–before time runs out! The FBI and Scotland Yard won't be any help in this mystery. Your search for answers starts with the Amaya Clinic team in Sugar Land, which includes Board Certified Dermatologist and anti–aging expert, David W Powell, MD; Board Certified Family Physician John Vanderzyl, MD; research scientist and International Advisor of World Society of Anti–aging Medicine, Dr. Anoop Chaturvedi and Diplomate Anti–aging Medicine, Dasha Mensik, RN. Has your clock been running fast? When it comes to dull skin, spots, and wrinkles, board–certified Dermatologist, Dr. Powell knows how to turn back the clock with hormones, Botox, Restylane, therapeutic, anti–aging fillers and skin cancer prevention. Is there an underlying medical issue? Dr. Anoop says, "As an anti–aging research scientist, I enjoy working with an established family practitioner like Dr. Vanderzyl, and an esteemed dermatologist like Dr. Powell; it gives me even more perspective when researching a patient's case. This detailed research and analysis of questionnaire's symptoms and lab results, helps the doctors draw up a plan for your total health." What broke your biological clock? It wasn't Colonel Mustard in the parlor with a candlestick. Could it be a hormonal imbalance? Let's examine the facts of the case. Dr. Vanderzyl says, "People may start to experience hormonal imbalance in their twenties. Hormonal imbalance gives us a range of clues like anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration, irritability, weight gain, acne, hair loss, night sweats, and reduced sex drive. Balancing your hormones can help you enjoy your life to the fullest." No criminal in disguise can fool a great detective team–.and nothing else found in nature is identical to the hormones your body naturally produces.

Instead of choosing a natural imposter, Dr Powell recommends bio– identical hormones. He says, "These hormones are exactly like what your body makes. The real term is iso–molecular, meaning they're identical on a molecular level. Your body will recognize them and respond accordingly." Just like the medical team on "House," Doctors David W. Powell and John Vanderzyl, along with Anti–aging Diplomate Dasha Mensik RN, and Research Director, Dr. Anoop, work together tirelessly to solve your medical mysteries and fix your broken clock. Dr. Anoop says, "In a working clock, all the wheels and cogs move together in harmony. In your body, each hormone affects the level of other hormones. The Amaya Clinic team is here to look at your body as a whole and balance all aspects of your health – from your diet, to your medical and skin conditions, to your hormones – so your many parts will work in harmony, too." magine training for a 13 mile marathon and the Women’s Tri-Fitness Challenge where categories include: an obstacle course, fitness skills, fitness routine and grace & physique. Then imagine that the more you train and the more you move your body, the more your legs hurt, burn and itch in the evenings. This is precisely what happened to Emily Svoboda, “Each night after training, my legs would itch so bad I wanted to scratch my legs off.” What was the cause of this condition? It was the varicose veins in her legs. Varicose veins are an indication of improper blood flow and can cause pain, redness, itching, burning, and swollen unsightly bumps on the surface of the skin. Besides being unattractive, varicose veins can be an indication of a serious health condition. Knowing this, Emily went looking for a solution. From a medical professional’s recommendation she found Dr. Baltazar with Sugar Land Vein Specialists. She called and was able to get in quickly for a consultation. From the moment she walked into Sugar Land Vein specialists she felt comfortable and welcome. Her appointment started promptly and Dr. Baltazar answered every question she had. “I didn’t completely understand varicose veins or the procedure and Dr. Baltazar made me feel at ease and able to ask any question and receive a truthful answer.” Dr. Baltazar holds himself and his staff to high standards. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in both General and Vascular Surgery and both he and Sugar Land Vein Specialists are dedicated exclusively to the treatment of varicose veins. Their goal is to offer every patient a safe, comfortable and easy procedure with true expertise and the best treatment possible. During the actual procedure Emily stated that Dr. Baltazar and his staff were extremely efficient and attentive, “They were there to answer any questions and ease any discomfort or pain that I had. They were very professional and friendly and they made me feel very comfortable. That made a huge impact on me.” And how did the procedure affect the marathon and Women’s Tri-fitness Challenge that she was training for? “Recovery was easy. I was walking the next day and within 1 week I was doing 30 minute walks, then back to training after 2 weeks. I expect to be able to compete in the fitness challenge in July.” Prior to her procedure, Emily always wore pants, even at the gym, because she didn’t like how her legs looked. Now, she wears shorts and dresses. “If I had known how easy and virtually painless it was, I wouldn’t have waited so long.” The pain and discomfort of varicose veins is not something that has to be endured. Treatment is covered by most insurances and Dr. Baltazar offers a free vein screening with your initial appointment. So, why wait? Don’t start the New Year with old pain. Call today for your consultation and make a varicose vein free life your New Year’s resolution.

A New You in the New Year!

H

ow many times have you made the same old New Year’s resolution to lose weight? Now you can achieve results that last. We sat down with Dr. Jeffrey Alford to find out more about his amazing Wellness and Weight Loss program. : You’ve been practicing medicine for over fifteen years. How did you discover this Wellness and Weight Loss Program? Dr. Alford: I saw it featured at a continuing medical education seminar sponsored by the Texas Academy of Family Physicians. They’re a very conservative group, so I paid close attention to all the data presented. After I got home, I got the three toughest cases I know—my mom, my dad, and my aunt—to give it a try. They started in September and went through Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, and a cruise…and still lost weight! : What sets this program apart and really makes it successful? Dr. Alford: This wellness pro-

gram combines the tried and true method of calorie restriction with an amino acid appetite suppressant. These amino acids raise neurotransmitter levels and suppress appetite…without those caffeinated, jazzed up side effect you get from amphetamine appetite suppressants. There aren’t special rules or specific foods. Honestly, I encourage patients to eat similar to the way they always do but within the calorie guidelines we set up for them. We then try to build healthier eating habits overtime. The amino acids supplements keep them from feeling hungry and their body eventually becomes satisfied with smaller portions. : How long does the program take? Dr. Alford: When you come in for your consultation, we will calculate how long it will take based on the daily calorie allotment and how much weight you desire to lose. When you reach your goal weight, the program really starts. We offer weekly monitoring and lots of support to make this a change that lasts! Ready to make 2011 the Year of the New You? From Pre-K to middle school, the teachers expect great things from their students and they deliver. IPS is a dynamic school community where children are taught intercultural understanding and respect for themselves and others. It has a warm, nurturing atmosphere that encourages the best from everyone. If your child will be 4 years old on or before November 1st, they are eligible for enrollment in the Pre-K program at IPS. As Cindy Blakley explained, “PreK is more than just fun and games; it is the beginning of the education process.” She even joked, “Don’t call it pre-school anymore. Although it may have the look and feel of play time, children enrolled in Pre-K have directed activities that create inspired, inquisitive learners, socially and developmentally.” Director, Susan Rhorer-McMahon gives credit for the school’s success to her talented staff, some of whom have been with her for over eighteen years. She refers to her team as, “a united community of enthusiastic educators dedicated to helping children realize their full potential.” With the small

Medicine Only Helps When Your Child Actually Takes It! P

arents know that children can present several challenges when it comes to taking their medications. Some children may resist taking a liquid medicine due its taste. Some have difficulty swallowing pills. And many children have a fear of injections. Also, many medications aren’t labeled for children. If a medicine isn’t approved for use in infants and children, it usually isn’t available in a suitable pediatric dosage form. Campbells Compounding has a Custom Solution for Children’s Oral Medication We can help your child’s medicine go down with less resistance, by compounding oral medications into many pleasantly flavored forms in a rainbow of colors that makes it more fun for your child to take the medication. Seeing the Magic of Christmas Sarah Warburton hat’s your favorite part of the holidays? The visit to Santa, the holiday decorations and parties, or special time with your family? Missouri City’s Vision Source, Dr. Anh Doan says, “At Vision Source, our favorite part of the holidays is when patients we’ve seen since they were kids come in for an exam over the college break. We’ll meet the changing challenges of your family’s vision…so you can see the magic of the holidays year after year!” Is your little one having trouble writing out his “wish list?” Does reading about the Grinch give him a headache? Dr. Doan says, “The vision screening offered at most schools checks children for nearsightedness, but other problems like tracking, focusing, “lazy eye,” astigmatism, and farsightedness can make reading and writing incredibly difficult.

With a complete eye exam we can diagnose and correct problems. Sometimes the answer is as simple as a sturdy, stylish pair of glasses... and they make a great stocking stuffer!” When Dad’s assembling that Christmas bike, does he hold the directions at arm’s length to read them? Is your teen getting headaches? It’s time for a holiday trip to Dr. Doan. She says, “Your eye sight may change over time, so it’s important to stay on top of your annual exams. If you have a Health Savings Account or Medical Flex Spending Plan, they may have a “don’t blink or you’ll miss ‘em” policy. Make your appointment before your benefits run out. We’ve got solutions…whether you’re ready for contact lenses or all you need is a good pair of reading glasses. At your exam, I’ll also check the health of your eyes to make sure you’ll enjoy good vision for years to come.” As the mother of two teenagers herself, Dr. Doan knows

how quickly the years go by for families. She says, “I’m an avid knitter, and when I knit for others, I think about how important they are to me. Keep Your Celebrations Stress-Free Dr. Leslie Cohan, M.D.

D

on’t you want a holiday that’s all about the twinkling lights and special memories, instead of hectic schedules and family feuds? Stress does more than make the holidays a headache…it also affects your health. Dr. Leslie Cohan of The Woman’s Place says, “Stress can play havoc with your menstrual cycle, lowers your sex drive, weakens your immune system, elevates your blood pressure and heart rate, affects your hormonal balance, and impacts your whole body. Knowing when to let go and relax can help you have a happy, healthy holiday.” Did you know that stress isn’t all in your head? Dr. Cohan says, “Whatever the source of your stress—family, job security, money worries, the size of your ‘to-do’ list—your body takes it as a signal to ‘fight or flight.’ When your adrenal glands ecrete the hormone cortisol, it impacts the balance of your other hormones. If your period has become irregular and you’re juggling visits with the in-laws, dragging decorations out of the attic, and running all over town, seek out some opportunities for relaxation. If your life gets back to normal but your period remains erratic, come see me and we’ll rule out other causes.” When stress fires up your adrenal glands to produce cortisol, it upsets the balance of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in our bodies. What does that mean for you? Dr. Cohan says, “Stress can lower your sex drive, making you less interested in the very thing that’s a fantastic stress-reliever. In addition, when stress throws your hormones out of whack, you could experience irritability, Dr. Cohan and her mood swings, headaches, sleeplessness, and daughter Kailey

weight gain. Exercise is a great stress reliever and I’d also recommend implementing some simple relaxation techniques and taking the time to stay on top of your annual exams. Having a healthy mind really is essential to having a healthy body.” You can find your own little pocket of “peace on earth,” even during the holiday season. Dr. Cohan says, “My top recommendations for women are to try not to take on other people’s stress in addition to your own and be sure to make time for yourself. You may find relief in exercising or relaxation techniques like meditation, prayer, muscle relaxation, and taking time for ten calming breaths. Remember, we’re always here for you and wish you and your family a happy, healthy holiday!” The Woman’s Place (affiliated with the Woman’s Hospital of Texas) 713-795-0349 16552 Southwest Freeway • Sugar Land, TX 77479 http://drcohan.womanshealthgroup.com/

Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter and his team at Alan’s Plumbing have been Fort Bend’s first choice for the last fourteen years. Alan says, “The holidays can be hard on your plumbing and your wallet. On the day after Christmas, we actually get twenty to forty percent more calls than on an average day. Whenever you call, we’ll offer you the best service at a fair price…because we believe in treating people right!” You’ve been working hard to save up for the holidays, and Alan wants to make your dollar and your plumbing go the distance. He says, “Most people already know that grease, oil, and butter can wash down the drain, solidify in your pipes and clog them up, but we get lots of calls around the holidays for all kinds of other things that mess up your garbage disposal.” Just for the record, chicken and turkey bones don’t sharpen the blades in your disposal…and potato peels turn into starchy glue in your disposal. What Do They Do With Your Teeth? Sarah Warburton hen you lose a tooth, your tooth fairy flies into the room, takes the tooth and leaves you a treat. But what are the tooth fairies doing with all those teeth? Making fancy necklaces? Decorating their Christmas trees? Dr. Bianca Sanchez of Little People’s Dentistry asked some of her patients why tooth fairies want your teeth…and then she gave us the inside scoop on the truth behind these winged tooth collectors.

W

Seven-year-old Tia G. thinks the tooth fairy crushes up all the teeth to make the sparkles in her beautiful fairy dress. Sixyear-old Aisha J. believes the tooth fairy uses the teeth to make the money that tooth fairies leave under your pillow… kind of like recycling! Shandi H. thinks that the tooth fairy tucks each tooth into a magical tooth-collecting bag. When the tooth fairy gets home with a full bag of

teeth, he or she scrubs them clean and puts them in jars. Each tooth fairy’s special tooth collection is the source of his or her fairy power. What’s the “tooth truth?” Dr. Sanchez says, “The tooth fairies tell me that they make sure every tooth they collect is healthy, then they crush them up to make the fairy dust that helps each tooth fairy fly from house to house. Only healthy teeth make fairy flying dust. That’s why I use special dental tools like “Mr. Whistle,” “Mr. Bumpy,” and “Mr. Thirsty” to keep your teeth shiny and strong. I also have digital x-rays to take inside pictures your teeth…and lots of treats to make taking care of your teeth fun!” Even tooth fairies take a little time to hop on Dr. Sanchez’s hopscotch squares, laugh at the funhouse mirror, and play a few arcade games. If they run out of fairy dust, Dr. Sanchez might give them the same floating balloons she gives her patients. She says, “I’ve also put lots of information and games on our website for kids, parents, and tooth fairies. If you’d like to visit our office before making an appointment, we’re always happy to see you on Friday mornings.” Call 281-261-0020 or visit www.littlepeoplesdentistry.com to make an appointment and share your tooth fairy story with Dr. Sanchez. Dr. Jane Starr performs first Robotic Myomectomy at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital

U

terine fibroids occur in up to one third of women and are the leading cause of hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) in the United States. Not all women with uterine fibroids experience symptoms, but symptoms may include excessive menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and difficulty getting pregnant. Hysterectomy is the traditional treatment, but a commonly used alternative treatment for uterine fibroids is myomectomy, removal of the fibroids while conserving the uterus in order to maintain fertility. This surgery is usually performed through a large abdominal incision, but it can be performed with a minimally invasive approach using the da Vinci® S Surgical System. Jane Starr, M.D., board certified OB/GYN on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital was the first in Fort Bend County to perform a robotic myomectomy. For women who desire a uterine-sparing procedure, robotic surgery offers numerous benefits including reduced pain and scarring, reduced blood loss and need for transfusion, shorter hospital stay and faster recovery and return to normal activity. In many cases, women may choose to have this minimally invasive, uterine-sparing approach based on the size and number of uterine fibroids. The da Vinci® S Surgical System only available at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital offers several advantages during surgery. The robotic “arms” and “wrists” that are controlled by the surgeon’s own movements filter even the most minute tremors of the human hand to provide steadiness. The robot’s camera also allows the surgeon to view a three-dimensional image, just as an open surgery would look. The robot seamlessly translates the surgeon’s hand

movements into corresponding movements of the laparoscopic surgical instruments that are inside the patient’s body. By using these small tools through keyhole sized incisions, the trauma to the body is reduced and Dr. Jane Starr the recovery is quicker and less painful for the patient. The robotics program at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has been growing rapidly. In the past six months, the first robotic hysterectomy, robotic nephrectomy, robotic prostatectomy, robotic colorectal cancer surger y and robotic par tial nephrectomy have been per formed by specially trained doctors at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “The robotics program is a continuation of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s commitment to bringing the Medical Center home to For t Bend County, as well as finding and applying the most precise, most beneficial surgical techniques to put patients on a quicker road to recover y with better outcomes,” said Becky Chalupa, Associate Chief Nursing Of ficer at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Dr. Moore Powell says, “Santa knows that taking care of others makes you feel like smiling. Our job at Powell Dental Care is to take care of you and your family, so you’ll have the kind of smiles you’ll want to share.” One little elf was so embarrassed by her stained, discolored teeth, she didn’t want to show her smile to anyone. The Floor Tells Life’s Tale

Donnielle Carter or me, the floors in my house tell the tale of my family and the lives that we have lived there. In my kitchen as I look down at the tile, I smile as memories surface of the children that have played there. And as I rearrange the furniture to make room for this years Christmas tree I find the pine needles from last years tree woven deep into our carpet and smile at the recollections of the fun and laughter we had gathered around the tree’s twinkling lights. We walk on the floor and carpet in every room of our house but all too often we don’t think much about it. About what it does for us, and the value it adds to our home. Thankfully Bob and Renee McKelvey of All About Carpet and Floors do. So much so, that the family owned and operated All About Carpet and Floors has become Sugar Land’s premiere destination for flooring, tiling, and remodeling for over 20 years. As life changes, so do our floors and our house’s needs. Floors that were once hip and fun now speak of times long gone. Anyone else remember shag carpeting? And sometimes walls do have to change spots. So if it’s time to update and start a new life tale, to create new memories, All About Carpet and Floors is the place for you. Despite

F

the name, it is about much more than just flooring. Desiring to meet the ever growing and changing needs of his customers, Bob has compiled an extensive network of expert and reputable trades people and contractors to assist you in altering your house to adapt to your families changing needs. And with Renee’s sense of style and eye for elegance she can help you fine-tune your tastes and desires so you truly have a house that meets your family’s requirements. This year, Bob and Renee are very excited about offering Johnson’s Premium Hardwood Random Width Planks Flooring with the Forever Tuff™ highly scratch resistant finish that offers the first ever 50-year warranty! With many colors and styles to choose from including, Carnival, Renaissance, Metropolitan and Villa, Random Width Planks are both striking in nature and distinctive in character that will enhance any room. During this month of holidays and family cheer, take a moment and look down at the floors in each room of your house. Can you hear the laughter of children playing with building blocks on the kitchen tile? Or the quiet turning of pages of a book as someone lay on the carpet while studying? These moments are the tale of the lives lived in your house and they are told through the flooring. Stop by the All About Carpet and Floors warm and welcoming showroom anytime Monday-Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm and see how Bob and Renee can assist you with creating memories that last. lenty of things have changed since 1972…except for the building Classic Chevy uses for pre-owned vehicle sales! Sales Manager, Mark Kolon says, “We’re tearing down the walls and bringing this building into the twenty-first century. The outside’ll get a facelift with a new sign, a new awning, fresh paint, and new lights. We’ll add seating for families on two sides and create an oasis with planters and palm trees. Based on customer satisfaction surveys and our own safety assessments, we’re also building a new drive to connect the new and used car lots to the body shop and parts repair. We’ll also redo the lights facing 90A to give Classic Chevy a warm, cheerful look at night.” Not only have times changed, but Classic Chevy’s changing the way customers think about used-car dealers. Mark says, “This building used to be crammed with nineteen intimidating little offices in a labyrinth of hallways. We’re blowing out the walls to create an open, welcoming space with a homey seating area, sparkling new bathrooms, and a kitchen with a coffee bar. We don’t do high-pressure, closed door transactions… and we’re remodeling our pre-owned sales building to reflect our philosophy.” Why settle for second-hand service with your second-hand car? Brian Covault, founder of the TCRN-Sugar Land Network says, “It’s not enough to provide our neighbors with the best resources within the Fort Bend area…we want to give back to the community we live in and serve.” One of the ways the TCRN-Sugar Land Network gives back is through their “Eat for Education” Scholarship. knee pain. Our local lower extremity (and all around orthopedic) specialist Dr. Mark Vann, MD says, “Knee pain affects people of all ages from children to seniors, and may commonly be due to overuse, injur y, or arthritis.” Even though the knee is one of the biggest and most stable joints in your body, it takes a beating ever y day. Dr. Vann says, “Knee pain caused by an acute injur y will often be a sharp pain that starts suddenly and gets worse with activity. When knee pain is caused by

arthritis, it often has a gradual onset with a dull ache that doesn’t go away. In fact, most of the patients I see have already tried over-the-counter supplements, medications, rest, and ice, without relief of their pain.” As an orthopedic specialist, Dr. Vann has a range of options to kick your knee pain to the curb. He says, “We’ll start with a detailed histor y and physical examination. Based on our findings, an X-ray or MRI may be necessar y. Depending on the diagnosis, a course of anti-inflammator y medication, along with physical therapy may be necessar y, while injections may be used to treat select individuals. If the diagnosis, exam findings and response to non-surgical treatment have been evaluated, without improvement in symptoms, surger y may be recommended.” If you’ve been struggling with knee pain that just doesn’t go away or is getting worse, Dr. Vann

says, “We’ll start at the beginning with a thorough exam and keep going until we get to the root of the problem. You don’t have to live with knee pain…I’ll help you find a solution!” Mark Vann, MD Board Certified, Fellowship Trained, Orthopedic Surgeon Lower Extremity Specialist Sugar Land Medical Plaza 1327 Lake Point Parkway, Suite 520 Sugar Land, TX 77478 713-876-6518 www.MarkVannMD.com

Retire Your Razor

Sarah Warburton ren’t you tired of the hassle of shaving, waxing, plucking, and threading? Kalologie Esthetician and laser tech Rachel says, “With our Palomar StarLux 500 laser makes it easy, convenient and comfortable for men and women of all skin types to permanently reduce unwanted hair…and we’re offering a fantastic holiday special. If you buy a treatment package for two body areas, we’ll give you a third one free; or buy one treatment package and receive the second area at 50% off.” Free yourself from the stress and embarrassment of unwanted body or facial hair with the help of the experts at Kalologie. Rachel says, “I really love helping people achieve the results they want. The StarLux laser works almost ten times faster than traditional laser hair removal devices, so it’s efficient and cost-effective. The StarLux also has a self-cooling application wand, so it’s more comfortable for our clients. Since the laser only targets the pigment in your hair follicle, it doesn’t affect your pores and skin and it’s safe and effective for practically every skin type and hair color. Now, the StarLux can only destroy the hair follicle while it’s in the active growth stage. Since not every hair on your body is in the same growth stage at the same time, we do recommend more than one treatment to treat all your unwanted hair. We’ve found that a schedule of six treatments usually delivers the best results.” Every holiday, all year long, Kalologie offers an amazing gold-standard guarantee on laser hair reduction packages. If foot pain is slowing you down, stop for a minute and make an appointment that will help you pick up the pace again. Dr. Marco Vargas of Foot and Ankle Associates offers all the latest innovations to keep your feet happy, healthy, and on the move! Could the pain in your toes have something to do with the shape of your favorite super-cute shoes? “Maybe,” says Dr. Vargas. “Tight, closed toed shoes produce the ideal conditions for developing nail fungus. Those same shoes can also cause toe pain and ingrown nails when the fungal nails get thick” While no treatment is 100% guaranteed to eliminate nail fungus, Dr. Vargas now offers Laser Treatment in his office to treat nail fungus which usually eliminates the problem with just one single, painless 30 minute treatment. However, if your condition requires additional treatments, Dr. Vargas will re-treat at no additional cost until the fungus is gone. For your convenience they offer several easy ways to pay including payment plans and no interest financing! Whether you blame it on genetics or ill-fitting shoes, bunions are a real pain in the foot! He says, “We’ve recently started offering a different kind of bunion procedure using a ‘tightrope’ device that significantly reduces post op pain and shortens the time before getting back into shoes. It does not require cutting and shifting the bone as is commonly done and it eliminates some of the risks associated with other procedures such as delayed bone healing and painful hardware. While this particular bunion procedure is not for everyone, it is an option available for patients with a mild deformity.” We women can’t let foot pain break our stride. It Takes A Village… ...to represent a city. And nobody knows that better than Taylor Campbell, our very own Miss Sugar Land. Full of candor, quiet resolve and oh yes…natural beauty, Taylor brings an elegance reminiscent of Grace Kelly. Sugar Land can be proud of this lovely high school senior who has overcome personal loss and inspires others to reach for their goals. Losing her father to a fatal car crash at the age of ten, Taylor found herself growing up faster than her peers. Rather than being bitter, Taylor draws strength from her past and has gratitude for the people who are in her life.

24 ~ UPCLOSE ~ December 2010

When asked why she participated in pageants Taylor said, “I just knew I had to push myself beyond my comfort zone and learn how to be confident. I credit my mom for helping me feel independent and take this challenge. She’s shown me that if I want it, I can do it. And if I don’t know how to do something, I can learn how to do it.” The pageant process has helped Taylor figure out who she is and what she stands for. She has learned that she has a strong foundation. She knows that there are some things you can’t rehearse, so be present in your

life and know what you stand for. When Taylor says, “You just wrap up your life and put it under your belt,” you get a sense of her marching forward as she remembers the lessons from her past and looks forward to her future. Representing Sugar Land in the Miss Texas Teen, USA pageant in November has been an honor that would not have been possible without the generosity and support of her of family and local professionals. he Grant-A-Starr Foundation has announced plans for its 3rd annual 5K race and fun run. The charity event date has been set for Saturday, March 5, 2011 and will be held at the Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd. The Foundation is also kicking off a sponsorship drive in support of the race. The Grant-A-Starr Foundation was founded in the celebration of the life of Grant Starr and is a non-profit organization created solely for the purpose of advancing diagnostic testing to save children’s lives. The Foundation provides financial support to Houston based research projects that are dedicated to the development of diagnostic testing capabilities which will reduce the time required to identify a child’s critical illness from days or weeks to hours. What makes the Grant-A-Starr fun run unique is the student steering committee. It is made up of local area high school volunteers who have taken a deep personal interest in the event. Building upon the success of the first two years, the group, led by committee chairperson Paige Lambert, is setting aggressive sponsorship goals for the 2011 run. Ms. Lambert, a junior at Clements HS, says, “We have been blessed by great sponsorship support during the first two years of the race, but now we need to take it to the next level. Our goal this year is to raise $50,000 for the Foundation and obviously, we need generous donations from the Sugar Land and Greater Houston business communities. There are many levels of support available including the headliner / primary sponsorship position. Both businesses and individuals are encouraged to participate. We welcome them all!” For sponsorship information, please contact Susan Alexander at (713) 540-7075. To learn more about the Grant-A-Starr Foundation, please go to: www.grantastarr. org. The student volunteers and the Foundation would appreciate your support.

magine a comic book coming to life… as Spiderman chases villains through the air right over your head! The long awaited musical Spiderman: Turn Off theDark directed by Julie Taymor with music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and the Edge will open on Broadway on December 21st… and our very own Natalie Lomonte will be dancing in this incredible production (rumored to be one of the most expensive

Broadway shows ever made). Proud dad, Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. says, “My patients who’ve watched her grow over the years, Natalie’s classmates from Dulles High School, and of course her mom and brother and I are all thrilled that Natalie’s representing Texas in the Big Apple.” Although both her parents swear Natalie started dancing in the womb, she went on to train with her mom, Cynde at Cynde Lomonte’s Dance Dimensions Studio in Missouri City. After she graduated from Dulles High School, Natalie studied at Mar ymount Manhattan College and toured with Momix, Pilobolus and the Parsons Dance Company. You may have seen her in the movie, Sex and the City 2 as one of the two dancers with Liza Minelli. If you go to cldance.com and look in the “Natalie” section you can view the dance scene. When we spoke to Natalie, she was rehearsing ten hours a day six days a week in preparation for previews and opening night. She says, “I’m thrilled to be part of Spiderman: Turn Of f the Dark. This pr oduction really involves the audience and includes lots of groundbreaking aerial work and so much amazing talent. I’m blessed to have such a suppor tive family who really encouraged me to work to achieve my dreams.” Does your family have a family dentist? Natalie taught classes at Mom’s studio… and her brother Matt, college student, helps Dad out around the dental office. Dr. Lomonte says, “My kids have grown up here…and since we’ve been in the same location since 1982, my patients really are like family. One of my favorite parts of this job is watching my patients grow up and bring their own kids in to see me. All of us love helping you and your family achieve beautiful, healthy smiles for life!”

emember what TV was like before the remote control? You had to take turns to get up and change the channel. You also more than likely remember having only three channels to pick from. If you don’t your guessing it was no fun. The ability to control your TV or even your entire home theater while lying on the couch has become a way of life. Now imagine being able to control every system and appliance in your home in much the same way--not just from your couch but from every room in your house and even remotely. That’s the promise of home automation by Home Theater Evolutions. Imagine being able to control every system and appliance in your home remotely--in much the same way you channel surf. That’s the promise of home automation. The technology has been around for decades, but new advances are renewing interest in ways to control not only home entertainment, but lighting, appliances, heating, cooling, and more.

Savant’s TrueImage Control technology pushes the limits of the user-experience by providing an innovative interface that allows you to touch actual images of smart home products to initiate commands. Simply touch the image of the actual light in the room you desire control, and not only does the light in the room turn on/off or dim when pressed and held, but it also illuminates on the iPad confirming the command.
