Keep Your ER Visits Short...and Get Back Home for the Holidays! Sarah Warburton

W

hat makes emergency rooms so packed around the holidays? Is it the constant Fa-La-La-La...Ooops! as people slip off ladders while hanging twinkling lights or could it be Martha Stewart mishaps while preparing the big feast? Dr. Shannon Orsak of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms says, “We see an increase in accidents of all kinds as people travel, rush around, and gather together...but other emergencies like heart-related deaths also peak over the holidays.” You may be busy making the rounds from Christmas parties to Cookie Exchanges to Holiday Pageants, but the pain or pressure you think is acid reflux or heartburn could actually be an impending heart attack. Dr. Orsak says, “Studies show that heart-related deaths increase by five percent during the holiday season, and peak on Christmas, the day after Christmas, and New Year’s Day. At St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms, you’ll find board-certified doctors qualified to diagnose and treat your emergencies...twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty-five days a year.” Unless you’re a board-certified physician, how do you know if you have a “real” emergency? Brian Orsak, co-owner of St. Michael’s

Emergency Rooms, says, “The state of Texas has adopted “the prudent layperson standard”...so if you think your symptoms are serious enough to go to an emergency room, then that constitutes an emergency and must be covered as such by your insurance. If you’re in pain, come in and let our doctors make the diagnosis...so you can get the prompt, accurate care you need!” Do you want to spend your holidays with your family...or sitting in a waiting room? Dr. Orsak says, “Here at St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms you’ll find everything you’d find in a traditional ER––board-certified physicians, an X-ray, Ultrasound and CT, and an on-site diagnostic lab––without a wait! Our patients usually don’t spend more than fifteen minutes in our waiting room. We treat everything from allergic reactions and broken bones to high fevers and chest pain. Whenever you and your family need us this holiday season, we’ll be ready...twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week. Get your flu shot, take care preparing your holiday meal, and be safe and happy, because your health matters to us!” Not a Medicare or Medicaid participating provider.

Save time and save money this holiday season!

St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms is the first and only free-standing ER in Fort Bend and the surrounding Houston area in-network with AETNA...and we are working on similar plans with more providers. Currently we do accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, Humana. What “accepting” these plans means to you: You’ll pay the same ER price for concierge service at St. Michael’s as you would pay at a standard ER..and often even less! St. Michael’s offers everything you need from an ER...except the wait! Think of our courtesy and convenience as our year-round present to you!

Going Home... When Linda Riddle

was only three years old, she came with her mother and her new stepfather, a private in the US army, from Thailand to the US. She says, “I grew up as a small-town Texas girl in Copperas Cove, and went through some tough times. When I graduated high school, I headed straight for Houston. Since then I’ve worked all aspects of sales and I’ve had my real estate license for twenty years. It was when I met TODD RIDDLE thirteen years ago, just as my business was starting off, that we knew we’d be the perfect TEAM for life!” Todd was living in Clear Lake where he’d grown up and Linda was in Sugar Land. “So,” Linda says, “we decided to have a little friendly competition to see where we’d live together. So, picking something I knew I could win, I chose bowling.” Todd says, “For the record, Linda beat me at the warm-up game and called that the win...but I went on to dominate in the games that ‘didn’t count.’ I thank God everyday that she won...Fort Bend has been a wonderful place to live!” When Linda and Todd joined forces, Sienna Plantation was just starting out. Linda says, “We fell in love with the lot where Todd proposed to me and built our first home. Eleven and half years later, we chose another lot in Sienna and built our dream house. Having a home and a loving family means everything to me! I have a twenty-seven-year-old

son, a twenty-three-year-old stepdaughter, a seventeen-year-old daughter and a four-yearold grandbaby. One thing I’ve always tried to instill in my kids is the importance of setting goals, working hard to achieve them, and giving back to the community.” Want proof that hard work pays off? They have consistently been the top Sienna Realtor for over ten years with ReMax Fine Properties, and a Top 20 Multi-million Dollar Producer in the state of Texas. Linda says, “Our motto is: Keep it real. We’ve assembled a fantastic team of agents and managers. Our clients love that we’re not too small to stay on top of everything, but not too big to deliver personal attention and service. I love still being ‘in it’!” Todd says, “Whether we’re working on a 2 million dollar deal or a hundred thousand dollar deal, we give our clients the same care and attention. We answer our phones 24-7 and have an unparalleled level of commitment to our clients.” Though the Riddles may be experts in helping finding families find a place to build

their roots, Linda says “This December we’re taking a journey back to my roots. I haven’t been back to Thailand in 48 years...and I haven’t seen my biological father in all that time. I’m going without any expectations except the hope for a greater understanding of who I am and a sense of closure, all while making new memories with my family. Having Todd and the rest of my family with me gives me the strength to revisit the past and set new goals for our future. Check in with UpClose to see how the journey unfolds….” RE/MAX FINE PROPERTIES TODD & LINDA RIDDLE 4500 HIGHWAY 6 SUITE A SUGAR LANDTX77478 CELL:(713) 540-0608 BUSINESS:713-540-0608 FAX:(281) 778-8867 LICENSE NUMBER:520449 WWW.TEAMRIDDLE.COM.COM

Real Estate Riddles: Buy or Rent?

Linda says, “Renters don’t worry about maintenance and other financial obligations, but homeowners who secure a fixed-rate loan can lock in their monthly housing costs and make prudent long-term investment plans. Todd and I rented an apartment while we looked for our dream lot. When we found it in Sienna Plantation, we could see the potential for growth in the community. Look at homeownership as an investment...and think about what it will be worth in the future.”

Winning at Weight Loss

“N

ormally I would never share this,” says Allyson Guidry, “but I really hope my story can help someone else. When I was in college, I was heavyset...a size 12-14 with size 42 DDD breasts. My mom suggested I get breast reduction surgery to look and feel better. I was young, and when we went to talk to Dr. Ahmadi of Avante Plastic Surgery, I was very excited. I talked about getting all kinds of work done. He was so nice and thoughtful. He said I was a great candidate for breast reduction surgery...but I didn’t need any other procedures done right then. I had the breast reduction done over a break, and I returned to school at a size 36D...but that isn’t where my story ends!”

Before

After

“I’ve always struggled with my weight and over a period of emotional ups and downs it crept back upward again until I was a size 42D. Finally a friend suggested I pray for discipline. I partnered with God and went on the Daniel Fast. My life took a turn. I changed literally everything: how I spent my time, who I hung out with, what I ate. Through exercise and diet I lost nearly 100 pounds!” “I was so proud of the hard work I’d done...but I still had awkward pockets of fat and excess loose skin. I went back to Dr. Ahamdi for a consultation. Right away he noticed the huge change in my appearance. He was so pleased to hear that I’d lost the weight through lifestyle changes and he called that “doing it the right way.” I had wanted to do everything naturally, but there was no other way to remove that excess skin and fat deposits. Getting the Lipotuck™ was like receiving a trophy for an award I’d already earned.”

“My family is in the medical field, so I’m very picky about doctors. Dr. Ahmadi is amazingly knowledgeable and talented...and also so gentle. He’s a perfectionist, but he makes you feel completely comfortable. His office is great about following up and they were also really kind about all my questions. Dr. Ahmadi and all his staff are really wonderful people who truly care about their patients.” Dr. Ahmadi of Avante Plastic Surgery is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to provide all aspects of cosmetic surgery. “I think of the Lipotuck™ as a facelift for your body, revealing your frame. I’m thirty-one, and I’m getting hit on by twenty-four-year-old guys. People I know well have seen me and walked right by me. One of the most amazing things was lying in bed and putting my hand on my hip...I could feel my hipbone! The first time I looked down at my feet and saw how flat my belly was, I couldn’t believe it! I’ll never forget hearing Dr. Ahmadi say how proud he was of all the work I’d done! Now––thanks to the Lipotuck™––my hard work shows, and I can show off my curves!”

“T

here are a lot of choices when replacing your flooring,” says Cindy Duffy of Jericho Foundation Repair Inc. “It can be overwhelming. One of the things I love about All About Carpet and Floors is that everyone is so knowledgeable about what’s out there and they are really able to guide you.” “Our family started our business at about the same time the McKelvey family started All About Carpet,” says Cindy. “We met them back then and have known them a long time. Years ago we did some foundation repair work on their family home, and they were just the most gracious, nicest family. We’ve always supported and recommended them. They are great!” So naturally, when Cindy wanted to put hardwood flooring in her upstairs last summer, she gave All About Carpet a call. “There were so many options at every price range—they really have a large selection,” says Cindy, “so I appreciated the help in narrowing down my choices and working within my budget. The process was very smooth even through a tiny hiccup. After picking out a floor and ordering it…we waited. It was taking awhile, but Damien at All About kept me informed of what was going on. It turned out the product had been discontinued. Damien brought similar samples to my house so that we could pick out a new floor quickly. He really followed through…that is great customer service. You just don’t find that kind of attention to detail and caring at those big chain stores!”

6 ~ UPCLOSE ~ December 2013

After the new floor was selected, ordered, and arrived, it was installed by All About Carpet’s hardwood installation expert. Cindy couldn’t be more pleased! She says, “The installer was meticulous about his work, neat and he kept the work area clean. And the end result is just beautiful! This family and everyone that works for them are so friendly and easy to deal with. And the work is fabulous! I will personally be using them again and I never hesitate to recommend them to friends and customers!” See for yourself that customer satisfaction and quality craftsmanship never go out of style at All About Carpet and Floors. “We are so grateful for the community’s professional and personal support over the years,” says Renee McKelvey and her two boys Shaun & Steven. “Come see us in our showroom anytime and we’ll show you the best in granite, natural stone and tile. We can talk about your design options for remodeling your home, or check out the latest and greatest in engineered hardwood floors and laminates. We can help you create a plan to meet all your remodeling needs! Whether you’re a repeat customer or a first-timer, we’re always happy to see you and promise to give you our best service on every job we do!” All About Carpet and Floors 281-265-3700 3145 Highway 6 South (next to Shipley’s) www.allaboutcarpet.com

re you ready for the holiday hustle and bustle? When you’re not pushing a cart loaded with goodies through the grocery store, you’re hitting the stores, hunting for the best bargain on that special something for everyone on your list. Max’s Cleaning Tip: Whether you’re giving a gift or you just purchased something nice for yourself, the new item is bound to have a price tag on it. And that means you’ll be spending time trying to scratch off the residual adhesive that can ruin the look of glasses and other household items. Luckily I found a great way to remove sticky price tags. After you pull off the price tag, simply apply a dab of Easy Off Oven Cleaner to the remnant and gently rub. Once the tag has been completely removed, rinse the item or wipe the residue away. Definitely a good trick now that the holiday season has rolled around. You can spend less time trying to scratch off a sticky paper and more time enjoying your gift giving!

combat that holiday stress with a massage, a manicure, and some me-time...and we’ll make your home fresh, spotless, and ready when you return. It’s like a holiday gift to yourself. After all, a Professional Maids gift certificate is the perfect stocking stuffer for everyone on your list!”

n the doghouse because you still haven’t done anything with the roof…and that hail storm was months ago? Want to know what everyone else is doing? Helen and her husband Garmond of Greatwood were wondering the same. Helen says, “I knew we had hail damage, and it caught my attention that several of our back neighbors were getting really nice new roofs put on in a timely manner. I went to take a closer look, and was impressed by how neat the work area looked… everything was set out and the area wasn’t trashed. I talked to the crews and discovered the work was being done by Ameristar Roofing.” “It didn’t even take a phone call,” says Helen, “I talked to Dustin and he came over and looked at our roof. I was extremely impressed by the outstanding customer service and friendliness.” Given what she had seen and heard from her neighbors and a great first meeting, Helen contracted Ameristar to do their roof.

“What I just can’t get over,” says Helen, “is how smooth this deal went from beginning to end. From the first time I talked to the guys, to the insurance, to the work itself and the finished product… there were absolutely no issues. And everything was done on time. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine when contractors don’t do what they say they will—it’s one of the reasons I really hesitate when calling contractors—but this absolutely did not happen. I am a pleased and happy customer.” Owned by Fort Bend County resident, Reuben Stafford, Ameristar Roofing is fully insured and licensed, and is also fully certified by the manufacturers of the products they install. This means you not only get warranty coverage from Ameristar, but you also get additional warranty coverage from the manufacturer. The team has also acquired the elite certification of CertainTeed Quality Master Installers.

When he’s not roofing the houses of the other Fort Bend County residents, Reuben enjoys surfing, racing boats and in his previous career has been a world class fishing guide. He’s a lifelong Texan with a Pomeranian named Tex. But he wants you to know that there’s no need to get in the doghouse for not doing anything about that roof! It can be hard to choose a contractor—but as Helen says, “Word gets around. We found Ameristar and hired them without even a phone call. And now I’ve recommended Reuben and his crew to several more friends and neighbors. I can’t say enough about how impressed I was by my experience!”

hat brought Dr. Sonia Chauhan, local Pediatrician and Neonatologist and her husband, Dr Subodh Chauhan, local Reproductive Endocrinologist and Fertility Specialist to LoweryBank? Poor customer service at Bank of America. Dr. Sonia Chauhan says, “Customer service is very important to us...and we were unhappy with our experience at our previous bank. LoweryBank is right next door to Methodist Hospital Sugar Land, so I just walked in one day. Altogether over the years, we’ve had a wonderful experience at LoweryBank.” “I met and talked with Alina Gonzalez, the Senior Vice President of Deposit Services. After she set up my accounts, I came in again with Subodh and he was impressed, too. Since we started banking with LoweryBank we’ve been very, very happy and wouldn’t change a thing

about them. From the moment you walk through the door, there’s someone to greet you and the tellers are all friendly and personable. Many of them, like Diana, know me by name.” “Little touches at LoweryBank make all the difference. For example, if you have money invested in a CD, they’ll give you a call to remind you of the expiration date and see if you want to take any action on it. That level of personal attention from a bank wasn’t something I could have imagined before.” “Last year was difficult for me. My father was ill and I had to travel several times to India. Alina and everyone at LoweryBank were awesome. They were very prompt in completing transactions whenever or wherever I needed them. They take really good care of their customers. I like knowing that they’re always just a phone call away.”

“The atmosphere at LoweryBank is calm, friendly, and every experience I’ve had there has been pleasant. I have to say I feel completely at home there!” “Both Doctors Chauhan work hard and make a real difference in the lives of families,” says Mike Dinges, President of LoweryBank.“Our job is to make banking easy and pleasant, so they can focus on what matters most to them. As a community bank, we always take the time to know our customers so we can understand their personal and business banking needs. We want you to think of us as your banking home!”

Our therapists are always on the lookout for new ways to reinforce speech therapy...while having a blast!” Let’s start with the obvious...toys, toys, toys! Games like “Apples to Apples” or Candyland help your child take turns, talk about the action as it’s happening, and work on sequencing. Cars, trains, and planes can be used to teach turn-taking, colors, numbers, verbs, and more. Baby dolls strengthen “pretend play” skills and can be used to teach body parts, clothing, action words (sleep, drink, eat, brush, sit, wash), and feelings (hungry, thirsty, sleepy, sad, happy, wet, dry, hot, cold). Dana says, “The important thing about all these toys is that they not only engage your child, but help your child engage with you. Speech in isolation isn’t our goal. We want to teach communication...and these toys can really help!” One speech therapy tool that’s perfect for all ages just looks like a straight-up awe-

some present...the iPad. Jason says, “Even patients who can hardly speak can tap the iPad and it opens up a world of communication. There are new apps coming out everyday that reinforce speech therapy concepts like articulation, phonemes, memory, sequencing, grammar, vocabulary, and more. Ten years ago we were using paper flashcards and today we have tablet computers. Don’t be afraid that it’s all fun and games. The more fun speech therapy is... the more effective it can be!” Give your child the gift of speech this year. Speech Therapy Unlimited offers free screenings and there’s no waiting for therapy services! With over twenty-five therapists with specialties in pediatrics, adults, and accent modification, you’ll be matched with a therapist based on skill set, gender, and personality. Dana and Jason say, “Whether you’re baking sugar cookies, working on a gingerbread house, or wrapping presents, every moment of the holidays is a time to celebrate speech!” Speech Therapy Unlimited, PLLC most major insurance accepted No Headaches, No Unreasonable Terms, Just Great Speech Therapists! 281-746-3053 12808 West Airport Blvd. Ste 332 Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.speechtherapyunlimited.com

Entertaining for the Holidays… A Change of Space? by Amy Sharp

“M

any people spend more time at home during the holidays than any other time of the year,” says Teri Gilberg, the Re-Modelista, “so it’s a great time to evaluate what needs to be changed or updated in your home!” From borrowing an old Westinghouse roaster because the turkey has just never fit in your oven to purchasing a few extra air mattresses so extended family has a place to sleep… we all make stop-gap accommodations during the holidays. “But it doesn’t have to be that way!” says Teri. “Now is a great time to reassess your living space…and I would love to show you how much untapped potential is in your home! Chances are…you can have adequate kitchen counter space, a big enough oven (or ovens!) and bed and bath space for your guests!” So just what does “the Re-Modelista” do for you? Everything! No need to poll friends for contractor names or put out Facebook pleas…after years of working in the contracting business with companies big and small, Teri went out on her own to offer homeowners a better value. Teri says, “I’ll come to your house and we’ll discuss what you would like done…what is possible. Then I’ll introduce you to the contractor I think would be the best fit for the job and your personality. All our teams have had thorough background checks and years of experience. My guys don’t believe in padding your invoice or throwing money at a problem. I’ll translate your vision to them at no cost and they bring it to life at a price that can’t be beat! I handle everything from start to finish…no need for you to ‘watch the contractors’. We can give you a ‘turnkey’ job in just about any area of your home!” So keep an eye out during the holiday hustle and bustle…a mental checklist of what would make your home better…then once everyone clears out and the decorations are Re-Modelista: gone, give Teri a call! Teri says, “I would Your Home Renovation Specialist “She Gets the Job Done!” love to help you kick off the New Year with 832-731-3191 a ‘new’ and improved home!”

Family Values

“T

he best holiday memories are those built on family traditions,” says Dr. Thomas Lomonte, DDS, “and staying healthy is the best way to stay involved in those traditions for years and years to come!” Did you know when the first training school for oral hygienists opened in the U.S. in 1913, almost every American suffered from some medical condition related to tooth decay? Dr. Lomonte says, “We’ve come a long way. Today, Americans have on average three more teeth than they had in 1970, and the number of children with cavities has dropped from 74% to less than 30%. Preventive dental care is working!” But the only way to reap the benefits is to go to the dentist. Dr. Lomonte says, “The number of medical conditions related to tooth decay is astounding! Chronic inflammation from gum disease has been associated with the development of cardiovascular problems like heart disease, blockages of blood vessels, and strokes. You can’t choose when you experience a medical emergency, but you can choose to get the regular and affordable dental checkups that will protect your overall health...and your bottom line!” If you value your health, you’ll appreciate the good value you get from taking care of your teeth. Dr. Lomonte says, “Even if you don’t have insurance, dental check-ups are worth it for you and your fam-

If there are issues, your teeth probably didn’t get that way overnight, and they don’t necessarily have to Come in be fixed overnight either. My dad’s brother, my Uncle Frank, started the tradition, then his son, my cousin, continued it, and now it’s my turn...and my son Matt and my daughter Natalie are Thomas M. “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” by Sarah Warburton rom sweet babies with no teeth at all to teenagers with a mouthful of adult teeth, Dr. Bianca Sanchez of Little People’s Dentistry wants all her patients to smile with confidence. She says, “I love to see how thrilled my little friends are when they lose a tooth and get a visit from the tooth fairy...but as a pediatric dentist, I find every stage of development exciting!” When your baby is born, twenty primary teeth are waiting to erupt through the gums. Dr. Sanchez says, “Usually girls are a little ahead of boys in cutting teeth and losing them, but the first tooth will probably erupt between six and nine months of age. As soon as that first tooth appears, it can start developing plaque. I recommend starting by cleaning baby’s gums with a little finger brush or washcloth...for good hygiene and good habits!” Those last baby teeth don’t fall out until middle school...so take good care of them! Dr Sanchez says, “Until your child can write in cursive, you’ll need to help with brushing. It just takes more dexterity than young children have. And as soon as teeth are lined up and touching, begin flossing. I often lay my kids down on the bed while I brush and floss them, so I can really see all angles of their mouth. If you don’t, you’ll miss what’s going on with those back teeth! Brush at least twice a day and floss once a day...so those baby teeth will fall out naturally and your child will learn good dental habits for a lifetime!” Just like Santa’s little elves, the Tooth Fairy and her friend, Dr. Sanchez, have surprises up their sleeves for good little boys and girls...and their parents, too! Dr. Sanchez says, “Our patients can enter our coloring contest for a chance to win our monthly prize, a $25 Toys R Us gift card or the big annual prize, a Kindle Fire. And remember to visit our

Sarah Warburton ed like tomato sauce and green like basil, nothing says warmth and celebration like Italian food...just like Nonna used to make. “Your family and friends can enjoy meals made from my Sicilian grandmother Mama Lomonte’s recipes, brought from her home in Licata, Sicily,” says Braden Lomonte of Lomonte’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria. “Whether you bring the party to us or we bring the food to you, we believe in sharing good times and good meals!”

Your guests won’t have to be urged to Mangia, Mangia (eat, eat), when Lomonte’s handles the catering. Mouthwatering homemade lasagna, St. Louis-style house salad featuring artichoke hearts and hearts of palm, or chicken marsala are always crowd-pleasers. Have an intimate gathering in Lomonte’s bar or on the heated patio...or invite Lomonte’s to cater a party at any location you choose. Braden says, “We do it all...in-house or off-site for corporate events, school celebrations, weddings and more for guest lists ranging from 10 to 1000. I’ve always thought that hearty Southern Italian food is the perfect choice for cold weather and happy holidays.” Chef Jason aka “J.T.” says, “At Lomonte’s, we’ll cater your special event... but we like to think we cater to each and every one of our customers every time. Listening to what you want is part of being your neighborhood restaurant. That’s why we’ve added to our menu a grilled vegetable lasagna that’s gluten-free. We know there are increasing numbers of people who are gluten-sensitive or who have celiac disease and we want you to feel comfortable enjoying our food. We also offer delicious antipasta, meat, cheese and fruit platters. Call and we’ll have them ready for you to grab and go!” Share a deep dish Sicilian pizza in

Lomonte’s cozy dining room, Fettuccine Alfredo at home with your family, or a full-on Italian feast with friends, neighbors, and relatives...and don’t forget to call for some Cannoli to-go before heading out to your next holiday event. “Drop by anytime,” says Braden. “We’re looking forward to celebrating the holidays with you!” Lomonte’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria 281-232-8290 815 Plantation Drive Richmond, Texas 77469 www.lomontesrestaurant.com Mon-Thurs: 5:00–9:30 pm Fri. 5:00–10:30 pm Sun 4:00–9:00 pm

But what Rachel didn’t see coming was that the studio would become a family business. Rachel says, “As the studio grew, I was realizing I would need help. My sister, Sarah, just graduated from Texas A&M. Like me, she grew up in dance and musical theatre, as a born performer. Her dream was to teach high school history. But since I really needed the help, after

her graduation she came to the studio…and she is the perfect fit!” Today, you can find Sarah on the schedule teaching classes just like her older sister. Rachel says, “I created my own training manual and personally train all of the teachers at Reformed Body Studio. Every class combines elements of ballet, yoga, and Pilates in one invigorating, sustainable workout. I was so excited to see Sarah go through the training program--I’ve known for years that she is a beautiful, strong, graceful dancer--and now she is a fabulous teacher!” Rachel and Sarah grew up in Sugar Land and love having the opportunity to share their passion for dance and fitness with their hometown. They invite you to share the Reformed Body experience with family and friends this holiday season. Rachel says, “There are no contracts and our class pricing options are very flexible. When you give a loved one a gift card, they have lots of options. You can even pair a gift card with a headband or top from our super-cute boutique! We would love to help you put together the perfect holiday package for someone on your list. He says, “The good news is that COPD is often preventable and new treatments allow for improved lung function and a much better quality of life than ever before!” “We’ll start your assessment with a medical history and physical exam. I need to see if there’s any impairment in your lung function. Counseling and medical therapy to help you quit smoking is also offered...that’s a nonnegotiable for the health of your lungs. If your COPD is advanced and your lung function is limited, I can also offer medical treatments like Bronchodilators and Oxygen therapy. COPD medicines do not cure COPD but they can help improve your symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Lung Volume Reduction Surgery to remove the damaged parts of your lungs may be an option if you meet certain criteria. If you have severe Lung disease or end stage Lung disease, I’m also a lung transplant physician, so that’s a backup plan for which I’m prepared.” “One of the most effective, non-inva-

Our pulmonary rehabilitation program offers substantial benefits in improving lung function, reducing symptoms and improving quality of life for persons with chronic lung disease. ack in 1998, my father saw a prosperous business opportunity in Rosenberg and took advantage of it to build our company to what it is today,” says Ana Prado, daughter of Oscar at Oscar’s Tire Center. “With constant perseverance, he had a goal set to make a successful, friendly business that focused on getting drivers safely on the road.” Today, with a second location across from the Stafford Centre, the Prado family still serves the families of Fort Bend County, as well as travelers all across Texas, with top-of-the-line wheels, tires, accessories and wheel repair. Oscar and his family have you covered if you’re in the market for new, custom wheels. “From high-end, luxury wheels to off-road, we have a huge selection in inventory,” says Ana, “and if we don’t have it in stock, we can generally find what you are looking for on the same day.” When your wheels need a little improvement, just bring them by the store. Straightening, re-finishing, re-polishing, restoring, and repairing damaged wheels are part of the services available at Oscar’s. Oscar’s Tire Center can help every driver in your family. “We have over 2,400 square feet of inventory,” Ana says. “We sell passenger, off-road, and low profile tires in all of the brands you trust—including Toyo, Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone, Vogue, Nitto, and many more. Our shops are equipped to mount and balance tires and rims from 12 to 32 inches.” If you need a more affordable option, Ana says, “One of our more popular options is our used tires. It’s a great choice for drivers on a budget.” The Prado family has kept their business successful mostly due to their friendly, personal service. Ana, who’s currently enrolled at UHD

You’ll see their dad Oscar at the Stafford location and at the original store in Rosenberg. “Our youngest brother is still at George Ranch High School and plans to become a lawyer,” says Ana. “My dad taught us all to set goals and work hard...and we’re successful because we treat our customers like family!”

hat else is happening behind the scenes at the Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center? Olympic Silver Medalists Kitty CarruthersConrad and her brother Peter are preparing for the America Legends on Ice event to be televised on NBC on February first. “It’s been great to get back and skate with Kitty while we put in the work to prepare for the Legends event,” says Peter. “Pairs skating takes balance, strength, unison, and timing. Since I’m working for Universal Sports as a commentator, we’ve only been able to train together on the weekends.” Kitty says, “Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center really has something to offer everyone...from theater on ice to hockey to beginning skate classes to open skate sessions to skate therapy to parties. I’ve been coaching and offering group and private lessons here for twenty years...and I love it!” “Not only is this Ice Center conveniently located,” says Peter, “but they’ve also got good access to the ice with practice times available before and after school. They accommodate busy schedules and make it easy for kids to skate without interfering with school. I think it’s the inner strength and determination I developed through skating that gave me the fire to hike to the top of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the US. Any child or adult who learns to skate will be training to accomplish so much more!”

fter four years in the Air Force as an air craft mechanic and twenty years with National Cash Register (which brought him to Sugar Land), Johnny Jackson started Jackson Air Conditioning 1982. His son Brian says, “I really learned the business from the ground up, and my son Blake is helping out, too. Throughout the years, we never forget the lessons of patriotism and service my dad exemplifies for us.” Today, Jackson Air is the oldest Trane Comfort Specialist in Sugar Land, winners of the BBB Award of Excellence for the last three years, NATE certified and repeat winners of the Angie’s List Super Service Award. Brian says, “Trane high-efficiency systems are made right here in Tyler, TX. The Trane two-stage air conditioning and heating system gives you just the right amount of cool or heat and great humidity control….and the Trane CleanEffects whole-house air filtration system removes 99% of allergens from

the air. It’s the best system on the market…we’ve been installing them for more than 30 years, and the product has been around for more than 100 years!” Of course, equipment is just part of the equation when choosing an AC company…and Brian understands that. Brian says, “We want each and every customer to feel like part of our family. We always provide honest, no pressure advice… never a bait-and-switch. And we always follow up to ensure complete satisfaction. Plus, we keep you in our family’s hands…installation is the most important part of a new system, and we never use subcontractors for our residential or commercial work. We strive to make you a customer for life!”

We See Her As Family

“W

e happened upon her purely by chance,” says Robert Aitken about Dr. Anh Doan of Vision Source, “but she was so sweet and thoughtful we were hooked! We first found her because her office took my insurance and was close to our home. Ten years later, my entire family still goes to her for our annual exams and all our eyecare needs!” “My daughter Victoria was seven when a school checkup indicated she’d need glasses. We took her right to Dr. Doan. Once she was twelve, Dr. Doan started her on contact lenses. I was impressed...I have dry eyes, so I’ve never found contacts to be comfortable. Dr. Doan has to sign off on all my glasses before my wife, Lana, will let me order them. Lana really trusts her opinion and her taste in fashion...and comes to Dr. Doan for her prescription sunglasses.” “Dr. Doan always steers us in the right direction. My son plays baseball at Lamar and he really wanted contacts. Dr. Doan thought that they wouldn’t be a good fit with his personality and lifestyle. We went ahead with them anyway... and he only wore them for a week. Instead she set him up with prescription goggles, so he can see comfortably and safely during his games.” •

Pre-K to 8th Grade

“Dr. Doan really knows us and the changes we go through from year to year. Her office is so familiar and we’re so comfortable with her staff. She has very low turnover, so you really get to know everyone...and her son even helps out from time to time. My kids always hug her and greet her with real affection. She’s seen them grow up! Anytime we walk in she treats us like we’re family...after all this time it’s almost like we are!” Dr. Doan says, “This is a great time of year to set your priorities and think about what really matters in your life. I hope that everyone remembers: making and keeping annual eye exams for yourself and your family is one of the most important things you can do for your health…and that’s true all year long!” Dr. Anh Doan, O.D. New at Ageless Med Spa:

The O-Shot

By Danielle Steel

T

he topic of sexual health seems geared toward men (we’ve all seen the Viagra commercials). Men, however, aren’t the only ones who suffer from sexual dysfunction. It is a problem also experienced by women… who often suffer in silence. There are reasons why physical sensations fade, or are absent in the first place. Childbirth and aging can decrease sensation, as can physical maladies. Women rarely talk to their healthcare professionals about sexual concerns. But statistics prove that women with sexual dysfunction are not alone. About 1 out of 20 women report difficulties with orgasm, and as many as 10% of women in the United States have never climaxed. Only 29% of women always have orgasms with their partner, which may lead to major relationship issues. Help is now available. The O-Shot can “bring back” the excitement, or help women claim the pleasure they’ve never had before. It is a non-surgical, all natural and painless procedure, and increases sensitivity while enhancing sex drive. Now, at last, there is a certified provider of the O-Shot in the Houston and surrounding areas, Dr. Elvis Torres, Medical Director at Ageless Med Spa. As a board-certified gynecologic surgeon and member of the International Society of Cosmetogynecology, he understands how difficult it is for patients to discuss this highly personal, intimate subject. Yet sexual health is just as important for women as it is for men. “O-Shots can help rejuvenate the tissue responsible in part for a woman’s sexual response and activate the female

orgasm system,” he explains. “In addition, O-Shots can improve, or even cure, stress urinary incontinence — the unintentional (and embarrassing) urination women experience when sneezing, laughing, coughing, or exercising.” As co-owner and clinical director of Ageless Med Spa I am proud to offer this solution to our patients. Women are slowly, but surely, becoming aware that there is a solution to lack of orgasm. The O-Shot is both liberating and empowering, and our patients report increased lubrication, libido and sexual pleasure. Don’t worry — the O-Shot is painless and is accomplished by injecting platelet rich plasma found in your own blood near the clitoris and vaginal wall. The PRP (platelet rich plasma) then release several growth factors that stimulate growth and repair, activating localized stem cells. The entire process takes less than 30 minutes and is conducted at the Ageless Med Spa clinic. Patients experience immediate results with zero downtime. Contact Ageless Med Spa and schedule your O-shot today!

Holiday Stress at Every Age

E

ven the most laid-back people can get a little harried during the holidays. “If you’ve been living with unresolved stress,” says Local Psychiatrist Dr. Diana Collins, “the holiday season may be your tipping point. Please don’t think you should try to ‘power through.’ Systemic stress and anxiety have been linked to organ damage, cardiac disease, cancer, autoimmune disorders diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s Disease. Children, adolescents, and adults can all suffer from persistent stress...but I’m here to help!” How can you tell if you or a family member is suffering debilitating stress? Dr. Collins says, “Stress in women may feel like

fatigue or exhaustion, while men may feel angry and externalize their stress. You may be over or under eating, sleeping too much or suffering from insomnia, or suffer from muscle aches, headaches, or gastrointestinal problems. Your stress may be related to external life issues...or it could be an indicator of an undiagnosed physical issue.” “I’ll start by ruling out underlying health issues. Then we’ll identify and analyze your stressors, so we can develop plans for dealing with them. Usually medication isn’t prescribed for stress, but an antidepressant may be needed for patients suffering from an underlying illness like depression or anxiety. Taking medication to balance your

brain chemistry can be as essential as taking insulin to regulate your blood sugar if you are diabetic.” “In children and teens, it’s especially crucial to examine the causes of stress. Kids struggling with undiagnosed ADHD, depression, or anxiety may be more likely to act out in school and at home and to selfmedicate with drugs or alcohol. Excessive stress during the teen years can have a negative impact upon both physical and mental health later in life…and can lead to an increased risk of suicide (as I’ll discuss in next month’s article, “The Danger Zone” about the signs and symptoms of suicide in teens and young adults).” This holiday season don’t be afraid to delegate, remember to make time for the things you love, commit to daily physical activity...and call Dr. Collins if you or your family needs help!
