ne day you wake up with a cough, a sore throat, and feeling sore and tired out. Is it a cold...or is the flu? Dr. Shannon Orsak of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms says, “Most cases of the flu have more severe symptoms and a more sudden onset than symptoms of a cold. The flu may also cause a fever of 101 or more. Here in Fort Bend, the flu season usually runs from October through April... and we’ve already seen a flu-related death in Dallas this October. I urge everyone to get the flu vaccine...and remember we’re here for you throughout the holiday season!” When does your “sick day” turn into an emergency? Dr. Orsak says, “The state of Texas has adopted “the prudent layperson standard”...so if you think your symptoms are serious enough to go to an emergency room, then that constitutes an emergency. If you’re coughing up blood, have a fever of 103 or higher, have bluish tinged lips, or are confused and disoriented, come in and let our doctors make the diagnosis.” The most common method for diag-
nosing the flu is an “antigen” test which can be processed by a St. Michael’s lab technician and evaluated by a St. Michael’s Emergency Room doctor. Dr. Orsak says, “Any time at all, you can call on us with any emergency...large or small. We can work together to stop the spread of flu this season.” You’ll want to know as soon as possible if you or your kids have the flu...or just the sniffles. Most antiviral medications must be taken within the first forty-eight hours to be effective. “Preventing the spread of diseases helps everyone,” says Dr. Orsak. “At St. Michael’s we offer separate rooms for children, for infectious diseases, and for general emergencies...and we get you treated without a wait. We’d always rather wait on the patient than have a patient wait on us!”

I’m thirty-one and my Hockey Academy class was mostly elementary school kids...but once I graduated I started playing in the Women’s League and in the Novice League. I absolutely love it! Our league has women players who are fifteen and women in their sixties. Hockey’s a great indoor, year-round sport that’s high-energy, social, and really fun!” “Once you try hockey,” says Dr. Chen, “nothing is faster or more exciting. My husband doesn’t play, but now he won’t watch anything else! ver since I was fourteen, my cycle’s been incredibly painful. Neither my primary care doctor nor my ob/gyn could give me relief. After my husband and I had been trying unsuccessfully to conceive for six years, my ob/gyn decided I needed laparoscopy. He diagnosed me with stage one endometriosis and called it “not a big deal.” Since he had removed some of the endometriosis, my husband and I began fertility treatments. Our ob/gyn said only IVF would be effective, but it wasn’t covered by our insurance and we couldn’t afford it. I also reached the point when my cycle sent me into pain so severe it made me vomit. My ob/gyn said my choices were a medication with severe side effects or a hysterectomy. I knew it was time to seek a second opinion. At my very first exam my new ob/gyn said, “You need to see an endometriosis specialist–– Dr. Mangal at the Fertility Specialists of Houston––ASAP!” The first time I met Dr. Mangal, I broke down in tears telling him my story. He told me, “Just take things one step at a time and keep faith.” He reviewed my results from my surgery in 2009 and knew my endometriosis was far more significant than originally thought. Max’s Cleaning Tip: Bedroom Secrets Ever wondered the secret to a “Professionally” made bed? Max says, “Go around the bed once, tucking in the sheet and blanket together. To make a “hospital corner,” pick up the edge of the sheet (and blanket, if you’re going to make them together) about 15 inches from the foot of the bed. Lift it up so that it makes a diagonal fold. Lay the fold on the mattress, then take the part of the sheet and blanket that is hanging and tuck it underneath the mattress. Drop the fold, pull it smooth, and tuck it under the mattress.” Set the mood in your bedroom with a homemade linen spray. Use an empty spray bottle or rinse out an old bottle with hot water. In a small bowl, mix lavender oil and vodka together. The alcohol works as an emulsifier, allowing the oil and water to mix evenly. Pour the lavender-vodka mix into the spray bottle, add 3½ cups filtered water, and shake. Make sure to shake well before each use. “A tidy, attractive bedroom is good for your rest, your state of mind, and your relationship,” says Max. “Spending just a few minutes will keep things in order...and we’ll clean your sanctuary ‘til it’s sparkling!”

“Everyone should chase their dreams and take the risk to find themselves,” says Linda Riddle. Throughout her life, Linda wondered about the years before she came with her mother and her new stepfather from Thailand to the US at the age of three. She says, “I hadn’t been back to Thailand or seen my biological father in all that time...until this year. Together with my husband and partner Todd and our kids, I embarked on the journey of a lifetime. Because of that journey into the past, I’m a whole person today.”

Seeing my father’s meagre material possessions, I truly understand my personal drive to give my kids a better life. I’ll keep this trip forever in my heart. It’s closure...and the beginning of a renewed relationship with my father and a deeper understanding of who I am.”
