What’s a Nice Texas Girl to Do? Becca Bragg

W

hen Michelle met renowned French chef Frédéric Perrier in New York City, he was working as an Executive Chef for celebrities and heads of state. She says, “We wanted to raise our family where I grew up… right here in Texas. Now Frédéric and I have built a life with room for our two boys with our restaurants AURA and Hoggs n’ Chicks, as well as a thriving catering business!” You’ll find Chef Perrier creating mouth-watering masterpieces in the kitchen at AURA, but Michelle’s in constant motion. She says, “Since I’m always on the go, it made sense for me to handle the catering division of AURA. We do so many off-site catered parties that I’m always running to someone’s home or business to plan their special event. When we say there’s nothing too big or too small, we’re not kidding! We’ve done events for hundreds of people...and we’ve also handled intimate dinner parties. We’ve even had clients literally bring us their own dishes for us to fill with something special. We don’t mind letting you take the credit for those simple-but-delicious little somethings or even a gourmet feast, as long

as you come back for more! Personalize your special occasion with AURA and it’s guaranteed to be a delicious memory! Michelle says, “Call me at 281-4032872 to talk about catering your event. Frédéric isn’t offended by requests for food other than American or French...he loves it and he can literally cook any cuisine effortlessly! I’m happy to make suggestions, but you’ll really be able to design exactly what you want. If you come by AURA to try our

I love meeting and mixing with people, so catering is perfect for me. One thing we both agree on? Living and eating outside the proverbial box! You’ll love our innovative American cuisine...with just an inch of French.”

“I

t’s not in my nature to sit back,” says Cathy Brown, RN. “I’ve had a job my whole life. I earned my undergraduate degree at the University of Texas and my masters degree in clinical nursing from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, I started as a nurse and worked my way up to director of an Ambulatory Surgery center. That’s when I met the chief of anesthesia, Dr. Mark Brown. We got married and moved to Sugar Land. Our lives were so busy, but we were committed to helping people in pain...then I had an epiphany. I said to Mark, why don’t we open up an office here?” At Back Pain Interventions Associated, PA (BPIA), Dr. Brown is double boardcertified in both anesthesiology and pain management and has been practicing in Houston for over two decades. Dr. Brown treats chronic pain including low back pain, arthritis, nerve problems, or even failed back surgeries. “We want to work with each patient to try to integrate your health care and spiritual beliefs with our practices,” says Cathy. Dr. Brown also has close relationships with several surgeons and privileges at several area hospitals; he can help direct that portion of your care as needed. “There are other clinics that may treat back pain. However, what really makes us different is our relationship with our patients. We are a small group so this means that you can spend more time with Dr. Brown—there is no rush. You’ll see the same staff members taking care of you through each step of your care,” adds Cathy. She says, “I know I’d want to be in a facility that was fully equipped to take care of my patients’ needs. Knowing that we meet the absolute highest safety standards for our procedures gives us peace of mind…and helps us address our patients’ pain effectively and with compassion.” Mark Brown, MD Back Pain Interventions Associated, PA 281-494-6900 6350 Hwy 90A Suite 700 www.whenyourbackhurts.com Sugar Land, TX 77478 • www.kalologie.com

hy did Robin Anthony, mother of four kids and wife of former Houston Astro and Los Angeles Dodger Eric Anthony, found Renu Herbs? Just like all of us, she wanted to reclaim her health. She says, “Growing up in Los Angeles, I remember eating lots of good food, but most was not the healthiest even though it tasted good. As a teenager, I suffered with irregularity and a bumpy face. Then I discovered that if you eat two or three meals a day, you should

have two or three bowel movements a day. Anything less will eventually lead to major problems...and make you sick! You don’t have to live with sickness, weight gain or fatigue. Cleansing my colon was the first step to frequent movements, a flatter stomach, smoother skin, more energy, and better health. It worked for me and it can work for you, too!” “How many of us are tired of trying to lose those last ten pounds…or more? Until you clean out toxic waste material that’s dragging down your system, you won’t experience harmony in your body and the kind of vibrant health you deserve. It brings me such joy when I get phone calls or emails telling me, ‘Robin, now I’m regular...and it’s thanks to you!’ You’ll feel lighter, more energetic, and your exercise will be more effective...once your system’s back on track! If you can’t seem to leave cake, cookies, or sugar-laden coffees alone, try my Drop Slim or Drop Slim Plus. It’ll help you zap those sugar cravings and get your weight-loss efforts back on track. Check it out at

www.slimdownwithrobin.com.” For a power-packed punch that’ll knock toxins out of sight, try Robin’s Detox Trio. This trio consists of three powerful products: The Detox Tea helps to scrub accumulated waste from your blood, helping with circulation, the Parasite Blend hunts and zapps deadly parasites, which are responsible for sugar cravings, and their eggs, and the Colon Cleanser removes these unwanted toxins from the body. You’ll lose weight faster, your energy will skyrocket, you’ll reduce or eliminate headaches and your tummy will flatten. Give your system a makeover with Robin’s Detox Trio available at www.detoxtrio.com. Renown Gospel Artist Yolanda Adams writes, “I believe in keeping my internal house clean. After many trials and errors I’m so thankful to have found Robin Anthony and her Detox Trio. I trust Robin and I know the herbs she uses are chemical free and safe—that’s important to me as a consumer and a mom. The Detox Trio is impeccable! I have never experienced any cramping or bloating with the Trio... and it works! My

urf ’s up! Imagine a cool California look with boardwalk, surfboards, and cool, clean colors that appeal to little kids and teenagers, too. This paradise isn’t just a blast, it’s also an amazing pediatric dental office. “After all,” says Dr. Bianca Sanchez of Little People’s Dentistry, “who said a dental office had to be stuffy or that kids just want preschool cartoons? We want all our patients to have fun!” Kids in this office express their inner wild thing with glasses in the shape of fish, giraffes, monkeys, elephants, and cows. Dr. Sanchez says, “Whether it’s treats for our Patient Appreciation Party or rewards for another excellent exam, I choose the things I loved as a child... dressing up, kooky glasses, and hot air balloons. Babies get squirt toys like fish and butterflies, while big kids get helium balloons and cool glasses. I’ve called our helium guy in a panic and told him whatever happens, we can’t run out! We’ve got kids who tag along with a sibling or even make up a problem...just to get in the door and get their balloon!” Ready to get those teeth cleaned or straightened? Start by deciding whether you want a pink flamingo or zebra Zooby dental brush to do the work. Then choose from different toothpaste flavors including vanilla ice cream and chocolate! Dr. Sanchez says, “Summer’s a great time for semiannual cleanings or to request an orthodontic evaluation with Dr. Radford. When we catch problems early, Dr. Radford can correct them with orthodontics

and save your child future discomfort and embarrassment. We’ll help you find the fun...and get healthy smiles!” Every day’s a beach blast at Little People’s Dentistry... and you can party at home, too! Visit the Little People’s Dentistry website to play fun games (remember Tetris, Space Invaders, and Frogger?), enter contests, or schedule appointments. Dr. Sanchez says, “We’re also introducing our Little People’s Dentistry App downloadable from iTunes or the Android store. The Hottest Style for Summer D

Sarah Warburton oes your family hit the ground running every summer? Local mom and Optometrist Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source understands! Not only is she an avid runner herself, but she spends her summers running her teenagers Alexander and Addison to soccer, volleyball, and more. She says, “Whether you’ve got a family of athletes, beach bums, or bathing beauties, make sure everyone has a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection!” Your skin gets a sunburn or freckles when you forget your sunblock. Exposing your eyes to the sun’s rays without any protection can actually burn the delicate tissues of your eye. Dr. Doan says, “Sometimes the effects aren’t seen or felt until much later. Long-term exposure increases your risk of developing cataracts, cancers of the eye, or macular degeneration. Look for sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.” Don’t settle for style over substance when you can have both! Insist on glasses that

are stylish and protect your eyes. Dr. Doan says, “Wearing dark sunglasses without UV protection is as dangerous to your eyes as wearing only a self-tanner with no sun block is to your skin. Look for sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Frequent drivers may choose lenses that are also polarized to eliminate light that distorts vision. And if you need a prescription or protective sports-eyewear, we can get those with UV protection and darkened lenses as well.” Protecting your family’s eyes from the sun can prevent major problems down the road. Dr. Doan says, “85% of the UV damage done to a person’s eyes occurs before they are eighteen years old. We make prescription lens-

es for just about any frames…and we have sunglasses for all ages. From babies to grandparents, everyone needs sunglasses!” “I look forward to seeing families season after season. When I see a patient through several stages of life, I can track changes in vision and look for problems that are in a family’s history…while enjoying the personal relationships that really make my profession personally rewarding!” Missouri City Vision Source Dr. Anh Doan, O.D. Skyline Juniors Is Bringing the Heat! A Dominique Brooks ce. Kill shot. Sideout. Bringing the heat. These are all terms you might hear at Skyline Juniors, a club volleyball organization here in Houston. Skyline is in its 12th year overall but it has been in operation in Houston for 2 years. Club volleyball plays during opposite seasons from school volleyball teams and is open to girls between 10 and 18 years of age. Jen and Mitch Woods are the directors of Skyline Houston and are excited to bring the world of volleyball to young people. Volleyball has been a part of Jen Woods’ life forever. She played for the Skyline Organization in Dallas and went on to play for Texas A&M for 4 years. After obtaining her Masters in Sports Management, she continued to coach club volleyball but felt that it was time to start a Skyline branch in Houston. “Skyline’s approach is unique; the focus is developing young athletes as volleyball players and as individuals that will contribute to society through different avenues,” says Jen. Want to play for Skyline? Club team tryouts are held in July for the season that runs from November to the next July. Girls from all over the Houston area are eligible to play; the Skyline Houston Athletic Center (SHAC) is easily accessible from all over town. The teams play in tournaments around Houston and throughout

Texas. Certain elite teams play in some out-ofstate tournaments and even compete in the USA Junior National Championships. Jen also notes that Skyline offers lessons, camps, and clinics throughout the year. Developmental programs are available for children as young as 5 (both girls and boys) who are interested in learning the game. Equal opportunity rules...young girls and boys can also benefit from Skyline’s approach to training and core values. The success the club has had in Houston has been impressive. “Last year we sent a team to the USA Championships in our first year in Houston and have improved in every age group for the 2011-12 season,” adds Jen. An additional benefit: many of Skyline’s athletes go on to play volleyball in college – many with scholarships. If your child is interested in volleyball, Skyline has something to offer. Miracle? W hat do you expect out of a miracle? If what you want is a complete transformation in an impossibly short space of time, you need the Miracle Method and the help of our local owners, Jonee and Paul Barnett. Jonee says, “Paul and I live with Miracle Method in our home, so we really know the product inside and out. I’m not going to tell you it’s the kind of miracle that will change your life, but it sure will change your kitchen or bathroom…without the time, mess, or expense of remodeling. That’s a miracle I can recommend!” What makes the Miracle Method so miraculous? Miracle Method transforms porcelain, ceramic, laminate, acrylic, or cultured marble counters, tubs, and tiles…without ripping them out. After your original counters are cleaned, the scratches and chips repaired and grout lines sealed, you can custom-create the perfect shade for your finish, choose a finish that looks like natural stone, or request a “color match” to coordinate with your décor.

Switching up a big surface like a countertop or changing the look of your tile flooring and back-splashes makes a big impact. Not only that, but the Miracle Method saves up to 75 percent over the cost of removal and replacement. Less time, less dust, and less expense means you’ll enjoy dramatic changes… without any drama! Not only do Disney and Hilton, the Today Show, HGTV, the diy network, and This Old House, use and approve the Miracle Method...it also delivers miracles for homeowners right here in Fort Bend. One happy believer writes, “Miracle Method resurfaced the countertops in my bathrooms - which were over twenty-five years old. They look fantastic!! Very professional, courteous and on-time. ’m sorry, I didn’t catch what you said.” “Excuse me?” “Say it again?” Are you tired of trying to make yourself understood? Speech Language Professional Cynthia Ginyard at Corporate Speech and Communication says, “Your native language is a beautiful and important part of who you are...but it can present challenges to speaking English clearly. Based on my expertise in the distinctive features for forty-seven languages, I can design a program specifically for your needs. I work with individuals or small groups who share a native language...or English speakers who want to speak clearly and be understood.” Whether you’re explaining a diagnosis to a patient, making a presentation before your colleagues, or applying for a job, clear communication is the key to success. If your accent is getting in the way of what you want to say, call Cynthia. She says, “Each language and regional dialect comes with its own typical accent pattern in English. Understanding the syllabication, omissions, substitutions and distortions that a person who speaks a specific language will usually make when speaking English....we can identify and target those patterns and sounds for an effective, personalized program that really delivers results!” We have normative data available for Amharic, Arabic, Bangante, Bengali, Bulgarian, Burmese, Cantonese, Catalan, Creole French, Czech, Dutch, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hakkanese, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Ibo, Ilokano, Indonesian, Isoko, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malayalam, Malaysian, Mandarin,

Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Taiwanese, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese and Yoruba. This is a flexible, results-driven program that fits into your busy lifestyle. Cynthia says, “My clients have included a gentleman from Haiti who speaks Creole French, Skype sessions with an international businessman based in Atlanta who speaks Amharic, a Spanish speaker who was job hunting, and a native Malayalam-speaker. If you practice on your own and apply what we’ve worked on together, I of fer a high-intensity three-day program of eight hours a day with follow-up, an intensive three-week program, or a weekly twelve-week program all either in-office, at your location, or remotely via Skype.” “Working together, you’ll learn to modify your speech so people will focus on what you’re saying...without your accent getting in the way!” Corporate Speech & Communication 281-530-9623 www.cspacginyard.com

’ll never forget one patient,” says Dr. Katia Lemke, DMD, PA. “She was the sweetest eleven-year-old girl, but she was missing some teeth and needed straightening. When I first met her, she wouldn’t look up, never spoke above a whisper, and wouldn’t smile. With the help of traditional braces and implants, she had a beautiful, friendly smile by the time she was thirteen! Her whole demeanor changed... and that’s the moment I love to see! The aesthetic effect of braces impacts your entire personality. Everyone blossoms when they really love their own smile. I should know...it happened to me!” “I was also congenitally missing teeth and I had braces as an adult. At the time, I didn’t have a choice between types of braces, so I had the metal brackets. Today I’m pleased to offer such a variety of aesthetic options. Whether you’re an adult who wants a removable solution like Invisalign, a completely hidden solution like lingual (behind the teeth) braces, or a younger patient who wants brightly colored or shaped brackets, I 14 ~ UPCLOSE ~ May 2012

Your smile should express your personality!” Maintaining your braces may be part of Dr. Lemke’s daily routine, but she says, “It’s my patients that make the difference in my day! We’ve been here since before First Colony Mall was built. Just recently, a lady walked into the showroom and said, “Renee, you probably don’t remember me.” No sooner were those words out of her mouth than a light bulb went on in my brain. I said, “Oh yes I do! You were one of our first customers almost eighteen years ago!” just about all her family members. She says, “My first advice would be: don’t work with family... you’ll never get a good family vacation again! For Bob and I, working together has meant we really pick and choose our battles and we look forward to time together away from work! We’re more tolerant and compromising... and it helps that Bob does a lot of the outside measurements and sales work, while I deal with people mostly in the showroom! We started out doing carpet cleaning, repairing, and restoring after water damage...just me and Bob. When I hear the guys commmenting about the heat and the physical exertion it takes to work out there, I can definitely relate to them. Twenty years ago it was me and Bob in that van cleaning housing without air conditioning in the heat. I grew up with three older brothers and I had two sons, so I’m used to guys and the way they think. Bob and I happened into the retail end of things because our customers kept asking for our opinions on new flooring...and after water damage people naturally replace their flooring. When Bob and I opened the doors at All About Carpet twenty years ago, our son Shaun was in kindergarten...and now he’s twenty-seven years old. He started out in the service and restoration side of the business, but now he’s

working with me in the showroom and attending trade shows. Shaun has a real gift for this. He knows how to bring light into a space, he’s great with color and design. I love to see him talk with customers or sketch out a backsplash. He and I both love the artistic side of things and we have a lot of fun. Seeing him excel at work makes me so proud. hat do Kinky Friedman, Buc-ee, Swatson (the Skeeters Mascot), and the Fort Bend Boys Choir have in common? They all had a blast at the Second Annual Classic Chevrolet Chili Cook-off. Classic’s General Sales Manager Mark Kolon says, “Thank you Fort Bend for supporting our Second Annual Chili Cook-off. We raised more than $7500.00 for the Sugar Land Police Officer’s Association. We’d like to give a special shout-out to the winners:

Cook-Off! Crowd Favorite: Slap Yo’ Mama featuring Dr. Thomas Lomonte, Professional Maid Service, St. Michaels, John Trevathan, CPA and UpClose; Best Booth: Stadia Sports Grill; Best Traditional: The Exchange Club of Sugar Land; Best Spicy: Mia Bella Trattoria; Best Non-Traditional: The Curry Cup. Start revving up your recipes for next year!” We asked the winner of the First Annual Classic Chili Cook-off, Ray Aguilar, the Executive Director of Oyster Creek Manor, what he thinks about Classic Chevrolet...one year later. He says, “I and the rest of the Oasis Senior Living team (Dina Harland, Carrie Boisen, Steve Smith, Tony Perez and I) were excited to win the grand championship at our first annual Chili Cook-Off. I’m the Vice President of the Fort

Bend Leadership Forum...and that’s where I first met Don Kerstetter. I’m passionate about being a community advocate and volunteering and so is Don. He had a real feat ahead of him to turn people’s perception of that location around, but he’s a man of integrity. People understand that if he says something, he’ll do it. He encourages the people who work for him to reach out to the community. Every year he puts someone from his dealership through the Fort Bend Leadership Program...that’s how strongly he believes in community involvement. Now Don and I are both Board Members on the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and I’d send anyone to Don and Classic Chevrolet, no matter what they drive. I drive a Chevy Truck and a mini Cooper and the team at Classic does a great job with both of them.” “It doesn’t matter what age or gender you are, Classic treats everyone with respect. My mother-in-law’s a senior. Before buying a car, she wanted to meet Don and Howie at Classic. They spent time with her and she decided on a Chevy Malibu. When she wanted it checked over, they drove a loaner car out to her house. They really went above and beyond. I also have twin daughters who are getting ready to go off to college and

need a car. They love the Cruze, but they think they’ll get more use from the Equinox. They carry a lot of softball and track gear, so they can use the extra room. The people at Classic treated them so well, not like a couple of kids...and they didn’t even know they were my daughters until I came to pick them up. I asked if I needed to do anything. My daughters told me, ‘No, the guys at Classic answered all our questions. We’ve got it all under control.’ That’s what a dad likes to hear!” Do you know someone who looks like their car? Heartbeat of a Nation B Matt Harris

ehind every great American is a proud mom (and dad!) who passed down values like hard work, honest-dealing, and taking care of your neighbor. For genera-

tions moms have been raising kids into good adults all over our country, right here in Fort Bend County, and at one award-winning local plumbing company, too. At Alan’s Plumbing, two mothers and six brothers—Alan, his two brothers and his three sons—work together to deliver generations of plumbing excellence. The other team member, Zach, has the same attitude

towards hard work and good values that define Alan’s Plumbing, so no matter who comes out, you’ll get service you can trust! When your mother gets older, it’s time for you to look out for her, the way she always did for you. Are your parents still living in the same home where they raised you? Alan’s Plumbing can check out their old pipes, inspect an ancient hot water heater... even install some grab bars in those deep tubs or a seat in the shower for extra safety. It can be hard for your parents to admit they need help, but when it’s presented as a gift, they really appreciate it. And being a family-owned and operated business for the last fifteen years keeps the operating costs low...so Alan’s Plumbing can pass those savings on to you. Don’t let your mom be taken advantage of by some “big name, small heart” plumbing company. They make all kinds of promises just to get in your front door, then hit you with the big prices on the final bill. At Alan’s Plumbing, you’ll get a company that earns your business the old-fashioned way–– by giving the best prices on the good work they do. That must be why Alan’s Plumbing

has won the Reader’s Choice Award for ten straight years. If you or your mom call Alan’s Plumbing, you’ll be talking to Alan’s mom or his wife, Jennifer, the “heartbeats of the company.”

Whether you’ve got a burst pipe, a clogged drain, need to replace a hot water heater, or a toilet reset, call Alan, Jennifer, their three sons–– Beau, Luke, and Jake––brothers Chris and Brian and fellow plumber Zack. Make sure your mom has the number of a plumber she can trust! Alan’s Plumbing 281-261-1064

Why not use summer to get a jump on the next school year? Betsy says, “At EduCoach we offer oneon-one, pay-as-you-go educational training sessions to strength and reinforce what your child learned last year...and get a head start on the next year. Space is limited, so call to reserve your session or put your name on our waiting list!” At Knile Prep Academy, kids progress through subjects at their own pace, make better grades, and score higher on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. an you imagine deciding to drop your “post-baby weight,” by winning the World Championship in Powerlifting? Jill Byler-Harrison says, “My dad motivated me to start lifting when I was in high school and I continued when I was in college at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State). I tried body building and won the Central Texas competition in San Marcus, but I really hated getting up on stage in a swimsuit. Then I tried powerlifting...and I found my passion.” “I began to compete through the Natural Athletic Strength Association (NASA). I broke the records at the state level, then went on to nationals and placed second. In 1992 I qualified for the World Championship. My first son, Courtland, had just been born, so I wanted to drop the extra baby weight. I trained and qualified for the World Championship, toting Court all around with me. I won the World Championship in Las Vegas in 1992 in the 104 weight class. I set two world records for squat and dead lift... and they let me try again and I Glen Gagnon with our boys broke the record I had just set!” Courtland and David Jill bought an existing gym and opened Champions Gym then expanded to become the Champions Fitness Center. She says, ““Managing numerous employees and being stuck in a office all the time was stressful so I reevaluated my career goals and decided to follow my passion which is working with clients one on one. I opened The Fitness Retreat in April of ‘98.” “I started from scratch with just a few clients. As a single mom with two little boys (Courtland and David), I couldn’t

have made it happen without a lot of help from my dad. In the beginning I was working six days a week, sometimes from six in the morning until ten at night. Then, at the most stressful point, I met Glenn Gagnon and we’ve been together ever since!” “I wanted to create the kind of beautiful, clean, relaxing workout space I felt people really need. Even as a personal trainer, I know how intimidating it can be to walk though the door of a gym and see a World Champion in 1992 big crowd of people, equipment you do not know how to use or that’s not clean.” “Once I started the Fitness Retreat, I thought about competing again, but instead I’ve turned my focus completely to my business and our clients. Recently I’ve had surgeries on my neck, but Glenn and Ashley do an incredible job making sure The Fitness Retreat always runs smoothly and our clients are taken care of. We’re only five minutes away in Riverstone close to the L J Parkway and Hagerson intersection. Glenn and I feel very fortunate to have such a wonderful business and wonderful clients, that we feel are a part of our extended family. We are here for you anytime to help you answer your fitness questions and to help you conquer your fitness needs and goals. Sugar Land and Fort Bend County have been the lifeline of The Fitness Retreat for the past 24 years and we are proud to be a part of the community!”

The Danger Every Parent Should Know Astacia Stuart eghan, a cellist and Honor Roll student at a Fort Bend high school, was not an “at risk” youth. The daughter of loving, attentive parents, she hardly fit the stereotype of a drug user, yet in her junior year, Meghan developed an addiction to methamphetamine. Three trips to rehab later, she is doing well, committed to her recovery, and goes to daily Narcotics Anonymous meetings. She’s one of the lucky ones. Twenty-six million Americans suffer from the ravages of drug and alcohol abuse, and that number doesn’t begin to encompass millions of others, like Meghan’s parents, who must deal with the fall out. Unfortunately, being an involved parent won’t immunize your son or daughter against substance abuse. Every parent needs to know the dangers of substance abuse, what drugs are out there and the behaviors associated with their use. Educating yourself can go a long way toward averting heartbreak and financial devastation. “Teens believe they are invincible,” says Irene Wisner, Development Director at Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse. “No one goes into something like this thinking they’re going to become an addict. Our society treats addiction as a crime instead of a disease that is treatable. That’s why it’s so important that we have education and recovery programs in place.” Fort Bend Regional Council is now a leading organization in the fight against substance abuse, with 7

How a Great Dentist Can Help Your Marriage Sarah Warburton ocal psychologist Dr. Gary Petty first met his neighbor Dr. Thomas Lomonte out on Tiki Island. He had no idea this new neighbor would be a miracle-worker for himself and his wife. Dr. Petty says, “Dr. Lomonte and I are neighbors on the weekends out in Tiki Island, Galveston. I bought the place two months before Ike hit, and we all got to know each other real well after that. All of us helped each other out and he and I have been out fishing a few times. He’s a really good neighbor, a seriously nice person, and a great dentist, too! Although I live and work in Houston by Rice University, I drove out to Stafford to see Dr. Lomonte for my SnoreGuard.” If you’ve tried to stifle snoring with sleeping pills, earplugs and nose strips, you’ve been tackling the surface problem...the noise. But snoring starts with the position of your jaw and tongue at night. Dr. Lomonte says, “As a dentist, I’ve seen the way jaw position impacts your airway. The first step to snore-free sleeping is keeping the airways open. The FDA-approved prescription Snore Guard® intra oral device features Air Flow Technology™ to help prevent the jaw and tongue from dropping back into the throat. Snore Guard® has been proven up to 99% effective in the treatment of snoring and it’s FDA cleared for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea!” Snoring’s more than a noise problem...it’s a health problem, too! Snoring impacts the quality of your sleep, which can lead to headaches, concentration problems, hypertension, depression, and cardiac disease. And it doesn’t take a highly-trained psychologist like Dr. Petty to know that fatigue makes couples irritable, impatient, distracted, and pessimistic. Putting an end to snoring improves your health...and your relationships!

L

Dr. Petty says, “Sometimes I’d even wake up in the morning with a sore throat from snoring so much. Dr. Lomonte fit me with a custom SnoreGuard and it stopped my snoring immediately! The first night I wore it, the snoring stopped. I’ve also always been someone who grinds his teeth at night. I tried several different night-guards from other dentists. I’d chomp on them all night long, but they didn’t stop my snoring. The SnoreGuard stopped my snoring and I’m not grinding my teeth either! I’m really happy with the results...and my wife says it’s a miracle. I’ve never seen her so happy! I completely recommend both Dr. Lomonte and the Snore Guard®...and so does my wife!”

Come in as a patient and leave as a friend!

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Cancer Center celebrates National Cancer Survivor’s Day Luncheon—June 1, 2012

M

ethodist Sugar Land Hospital will join over 12 million American cancer survivors in observing the 25th annual National Cancer Survivor’s Day this year. Hundreds of communities worldwide will host events on this day to celebrate life and demonstrate that there is hope. The contributions of the families, friends and health care providers who support cancer survivors will also be recognized. The National Cancer Survivor’s Day Foundation (NCSD) administrator is encouraging everyone to participate in their community’s event. “Come join in the fun and see for yourself that life can go on, and is sometimes even enhanced by a cancer diagnosis,” says Foundation spokesperson, Paula Chadwell. “National Cancer Survivor’s Day is a great opportunity for cancer survivors, caregivers, friends and family to come together and affirm the possibility of quality of life after a diagnosis of cancer,” added Clive Shkedy, M.D., radiation oncologist and Medical Director of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Cancer Center. NCSD started in the United States and is now worldwide, says Chadwell, and it is observed in countries as far away as Australia, Italy and Malaysia. “A ‘survivor’ is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life,” as defined by the Foundation. Cancer survivors may face many challenges such as hindered access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, inadequate or no insurance, financial hardships, employment problems and psychological strug-

gles. “Despite these difficulties, cancer survivors can live active, productive lives,” says Chadwell. Methodist Sugar Land Cancer Center welcomes all local cancer survivors, caregivers, community leaders, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital physicians and anyone passionate about the cause to join us as we honor the survivors living with a history of cancer in America today. The Cancer Survivor’s Day Celebration and Luncheon will be held Friday, June 1, 2012 from 11:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital – Conference Center. RSVP Required. Please RSVP by May 29th to Frances Goerlich by calling 281-274-7930 or emailing at FGoerlich@tmhs.org.

T

ired of running around in circles, trying to get that sleek silhouette and tight tummy you want? There really is an easier way. As featured on “The Doctors” and examined by Dr. Oz, the FDA-approved i-Lipo offers an affordable, safe, and painless way to smooth cellulite, contour your body and fight fat. Dr. Jeffery Alford of Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss has partnered with Dr. Dina White of Natural Solutions Health and Wellness to make i-Lipo available to you. He says, “We’re always looking for way to help our patients enjoy the benefits of better health. If diet and exercise aren’t getting rid of stubborn fat deposits, the non-invasive i-Lipo laser shrinks fat cells immediately without damaging skin or surrounding tissue. That makes it easier and more rewarding to keep making healthy choices...and seeing quick results!” You can pound the pavement and hit the gym, but what if that’s not enough? Liquefy fat where it lives...just below the outer layer of your skin. I-Lipo uses a “cold, low level” laser to melt fat so your body can remove it easily and naturally. In a randomized, controlled study, patients lost, on average, 3.64 inches from their waist, hip and thighs! Patients who also diet and exercise see even more dramatic results. Dr. Alford says, “I offer several physician approved weight loss programs to fit most lifestyles and help patients achieve a healthy weight. We’ll make sure you have the information, the support, and the motivation you need to succeed!” Want a tighter, toner, leaner look? I-Lipo targets specific areas like the upper arms, abdomen, chin, or thighs...and there’s no pain, no needles, and no downtime! Clinical studies show that i-lipo delivers a 30% reduction in the fat layer depth just after one treatment, and more can be achieved through more sessions. “When you take in more calories than you use,” explains Dr. White, “the extra calories are stored as fat inside a fat cell. The i-Lipo laser emits low levels of safe laser energy through your skin and onto the fat cells. This affects the outside wall of the fat cell, causing it to release the fat stored within it. Fat spills out from the broken cell membranes into the interstitial space where they are slowly transported through the body’s natural lymphatic system. Exercising helps dispose of the fat more efficiently, so it won’t be reabsorbed...and once you see results, you’ll be even more motivated to pursue a healthy lifestyle!” Ready to kick fat to the curb and look your best? Call Sugar Land Wellness and Weightloss or Natural Solutions Health and Wellness for the one-two-three punch of a supportive weight-loss program, the power of i-Lipo, and aesthetic services. The Gift She Really Wants

G

uys, you may think a box of chocolates or a bouquet of roses is the perfect gift for your wife this Mother’s Day. But the ladies we spoke with had a different suggestion. You know how you’ve been tired, grouchy, and low on energy? Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. says, “Approximately 30 percent of men between the ages of forty and eighty are affected by androgen deficiency, a condition marked by low testosterone levels...with symptoms that include muscle atrophy, weight gain, exhaustion, depression, bad sleep, and decreased libido. Give a boost to your energy and to your marriage by getting your testosterone levels checked and regulated!” Want to give her a Mother’s Day to remember? Start by being the right kind of Dad. Aging, toxins, obesity, and even fatherhood can make your testosterone drop. Dr. Campbell says, “It’s a myth that some things are inevitable parts of aging. Symptoms of low testosterone are treatable by diet, exercise, lifestyle changes... and doctor-prescribed Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Once your hormone levels are in balance, you’ll have more energy to chase the kids, help around the house, and make your marriage stronger.” Why does your energy hit the brakes when you hit forty? Men suffer hormonal drops just like women do in middle age. In addition, studies suggest that across the population, testosterone levels have dropped dramatically in that last twenty years. Even with the effects of smoking and obesity taken into consideration, other things like environmental toxins may affect testosterone. Dr. Campbell says, “Whether aging or our modern lifestyle is to blame, there’s no reason to grin and bear the effects of low testosterone. One of the most thoughtful gifts you can give your wife is your ver y best self. If you’re not feeling one hundred percent, ask your doctor about your testosterone levels...or make an appointment to talk with me about hormone balancing.” Give her the gift of romance this Mother’s Day by boosting your own energy and regaining your vigor. Dr. Campbell says, “Balancing your hormones can bring all your relationships into balance. Once you’re fully healthy, it’s easier to be happy. I’ll work with you and your doctor to help you feel your best.” Now that’s the gift that keeps on giving!

Kids Ready to K

ids ages four and up can find their groove with awesome summer camps from Fort Bend Music, Fort Bend’s premier music school. We asked talented instructors Dawn Smith, George Torres, and Kat Kilpatrick how Fort Bend Music can unleash the music in your child’s soul. “We have three camps,” says Dawn Smith, Fort Bend Music’s piano teacher. “One for kids ages seven through teenagers. They’ll get the first five lessons in voice, guitar, drum, and piano from myself and George... so it’s like a sampler that covers the first month of lessons in a single week. It’s a great way to try something new and see what sparks their interest. Our camp for kids ages four through six will incorporate group piano lessons, ear training, rhythm, pitch, and lots of fun games and dancing.”

Rock?

George Torres, the rock band teacher at Fort Bend Music, says, “Our third camp, Band Camp taught by Keith Wyatt who has taught for 32 plus years, is an intense week focusing on performance technique, tone quality, practice methods, theory, sight reading. It’s for kids with a minimum of six months experience playing and their own instrument. We also offer a full service band instrument repair by Bill Barth and a rent-to-own program. We also offer group lessons in drum, guitar and piano. When I teach drum, I often play guitar along with the kids, so they get the feel of rocking with a band.” “The group Yamaha piano classes here are incredible,” says Kat Kilpatrick, who teaches group piano classes at Fort Bend Music. “We’re the only accredited Yamaha group school in Houston and one of only two in Texas. They show kids how to have fun, be creative, and play as part of an ensemble, so they’re a great introduction to music no matter what instrument you’d like to play eventually. Kids are used to working in groups in school, so this group model makes sense to

them...and it makes piano lessons social and really fun!” Enrollment for summer camps is open now, but group sizes are limited...so don’t wait to reserve your spot! Contact the lessons department. Thinking about starting your child in music lessons next year? Call for information about the current year-end recitals (open to the public) and you can see what your child’s potential could be...with the help of Fort Bend Music! Group and private lessons available for all ages. Dawn says,“After a single lesson at Fort Bend Music, you will be able to play something!” Why should the kids have all the fun? Not only can adults take group or private music lessons at Fort Bend Music, now you can also unveil your inner artist with adult art classes. Over four weeks of lessons taught by Fort Bend Music’s Founder, Joyce Cochran, you’ll create your own masterpiece, while learning the secrets of technique, perspective, and texture. 281-494-5885 12919 SW Freeway, Ste 160 www.fortbendmusiccenter.com

ecades of experience in marriage and in business together give Jimmy and Cammy Simpson strong roots in Fort Bend. Cammy says, “We’ve been married for thirty years and started Simpson’s Tree Service together twenty years ago. I’ve worked shoulder to shoulder in the field with Jimmy. When we started out, we were a young family with small kids. Now they’re twenty-four, twenty-two, and twenty years old... and we have a three-yearold grandbaby as well!”

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree at Simpson’s Tree Service. Cammy says, “We’re proud of the business we built together to support our kids Brandon, Nicholas, and Amanda. When they were growing up, taking care of trees was what they knew. Now they know everything about it...and both of our sons still work with us, while our daughter helps out in the office between college and her other job!” Over the years, Simpson’s Tree Service has branched out to trim trees all over the Houston area. If you’ve seen them at work, you can tell these guys really know what they’re doing! Cammy says, “Two of our team members have been cutting for us for fifteen years each, another three or four for eight to ten years each. They use safety equipment and ropes and harnesses to get up into the trees and rope the trimmed branches down to the guys on the ground. We’ve had people so impressed that they pull off the road to watch our guys at work...and then give us a call to schedule service!” Have you noticed Spring busting out all over? All those April
