Speech is the Key to

Change

by Sarah Warburton

“W

hen I was seven years old,” says Dana Johnson, co-founder of Speech Therapy Unlimited,” my great grandmother had a laryngectomy. When she came back from the hospital, I was floored by how different she sounded. That’s the moment I started paying attention to how people speak. My mom was a teacher, and her emphasis on grammar meant I never lost that interest in speech. Once I entered an undergraduate program, I investigated speech therapy programs and the rest is history! For my husband Jason and I, speech therapy is the only thing we can imagine doing... we love it!” “When we designed and founded Speech Therapy Unlimited, we considered every single detail from the talented and enthusiastic team we assembled to the very scent of the office. That’s right, we had experts design a very subtle scent designed to help clients relax and disassociate ourselves from the feel of a doctor’s office. We tried to think like a child, so that everything’s encouraging and non-intimidating. Especially with autistic children, every little detail can affect their success. We want to empower clients of all ages––from infants to seniors––so if you don’t see results after a few months, we’ll make some changes.” Put your hand firmly over your mouth. Now try to tell someone what you want. Frustrating? That’s exactly why small children with limited speech may scream or throw tantrums. Dana says, “The ability to communicate changes everything! When a one-year-old realizes that using signs gets him the response he wants or a presidential candidate is making a campaign speech, what we say and how we say it is at the root of our connection with the world. Running our business while raising three kids (ages one, two, and seven) makes this a twentyfour hour a day, seven-day-a-week occupation for me and Jason...but seeing a child or adult change is the reward that keeps us going.” Speech Therapy Unlimited, PLLC - most major insurance accepted No Headaches, No Unreasonable Terms, Just Great Speech Therapists! 281-746-3053 12808 West Airport Blvd. Ste 332 Sugar Land, TX 77498 www.speechtherapyunlimited.com

hen my husband and I had trouble conceiving a baby,” says Dalia Marroquin, “we visited a fertility specialist, Dr. Subodh Chauhan. He was supportive and super-caring...and it was only five months before he handed me my ultrasound ‘graduation photo’ and recommended a wonderful obstetrician for me. I was then looking for a Pediatrician and heard great things about Dr Sonia Chauhan. I didn’t think twice before calling her to be my baby’s doctor...and I’m so grateful I found her!” “Dr. Sonia Chauhan goes above and beyond to help parents feel confident. She came to see my newborn daughter Sofia and me at the hospital. She’s sweet, kind, and answers every question...it’s as comfortable as talking to your own sister. Sometimes I hear Sofia breathing heavily or coughing and get worried. I know I’m a nervous new mother, but as a mother herself, Dr. Chauhan understands how I feel and she’s always there to put my mind at ease.” “When Sofia was just a month old, she was sick and I got scared. I called Dr. Chauhan but my husband said, “She’s not going to answer at one o’clock in the morning.” She did! Dr. Chauhan advised me to take Sofia to the ER. Early the next morning Dr. Chauhan called. She’d been thinking about us and was worried that she hadn’t heard anything. She was relieved to hear Sofia was doing fine. Dr. Chauhan has explained what are the warning signs based on her years of experience as a neonatologist. We’ve been lucky that Sofia’s so healthy...and that Dr. Chauhan is looking after us!” What better pediatrician could you have than a newborn specialist who previously served as Director of Neonatology at Methodist and Memorial Sugar Land hospital? In addition to being awarded“Best Female Physician”, “Most Responsive Physician” at Memorial and “Most Supportive Physician leader ” at Methodist Sugar Land hospital, Dr. Chauhan has just been voted “Best Pediatrician” by the Sugar Land Sun, 2013. She says, “Knowing that this award was based

Dr. Sonia Chauhan holds Sofia Marroquin purely on the votes of my patients means everything to me. The relationships I build with moms, dads, and kids is at the heart of everything I do. What to Expect After

Sarah Warburton

W

ondering what to expect when you’re expecting? One of the little side effects of pregnancy can be big...large, purple swollen veins. Vascular Surgeon Dr. Ulises Baltazar, MD says, “During pregnancy, an increased volume of blood and a growing uterus put additional pressure on your veins... and extra progesterone relaxes the vessels. These varicose veins may shrink or disappear within a few months after you give birth. If they don’t, that’s the time to see me for a free vascular evaluation.” Once your baby is walking and talking, your veins should be back to normal. If they’re still swollen and sore, that’s a sign of problems. “Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic problem, they’re a vascular health problem,” says Dr. Baltazar. “When the valves in your veins are unhealthy, blood can then flow backward and pool inside the vein, so it swells...leading Despite big brother, mom & dads’ best to venous diseases like spider veins, efforts clowning around they could not varicose veins and venous stasis ulcers.” get little sister Catherine to look at the Nursing student and mother of camera but had lots of fun trying! two, Theresa Banks says, “After two pregnancies, I had a severe vein on my right leg, really painful and swollen. My doctor referred me to Dr. Baltazar at the Vein Specialists of Sugar Land. I appreciated the way he explained all the options and chose a conservative route first. We started with laser therapy, since it’s the easiest and has the shortest recovery time. After that procedure, the vein closed partially, but it had been so distended that it still showed and a year later I still had some pain. That’s when Dr. Baltazar recommended surgery. Both procedures were in-office and really easy. Now I don’t feel any pain at all and you could hardly tell I’d had anything done.” “Dr. Baltazar was really flexible about working around my schedule... which I appreciated since I’m in nursing school and have two kids (ages 4 and 6). He’s a good listener and very considerate. His staff always let me know what they were doing and I never had any issues or trouble at all. I would say he’s really a great doctor, one of the best ones I’ve ever had!” “When you’ve got varicose veins, you need a doctor who specializes , MD, RVT, FACS exclusively in veins...and that’s Vascular Surgeon Dr. Ulises Baltazar, MD, Sugar Land Vein Specialists winner of the 2011 Patients’ Choice Award. He’s been board-certified by the 281-240-8400 American Board of Surgery in Vascular Surgery for over a decade. He says, “I won’t recommend unnecessary measures and I’ll always put you and your 16605 Southwest Freeway Ste 505 health first! I have one professional passion...making sure your veins are (in Methodist Professional Building working properly so you’ll feel and look your best!”

nce I entered my fifties,” says one local mom, Jennifer, “nothing budged the weight around my waist. I could see that pooch whenever I walked past a mirror and it made me really self-conscious. I was ready for a change. All three of my sons were grown up and it was my time. I’d never done anything just for myself...and I deserved it!” “I got estimates from two other plastic surgery places, but they made me feel frumpy and superficial. I was completely comfortable at Dr. Ahmadi’s office, Avante Plastic Surgery. Everyone who works there is so down-to-earth, warm, and really professional. They were sensitive to my feelings and gave me all the support I needed. You can tell they really care about you.” “In my bathroom at home I have a picture of a Greek sculptor creating a beautiful sculpture of a woman who comes to life. That’s what Dr. Ahmadi is like. He sees what you could look like and literally transforms you into a work of art. He removed three pounds of skin and eight pounds of fat from my waist. Now I actually have a stomach that looks better bare than it does with clothes on. I’ve shown it off to all my friends. My husband can’t believe how often I walk around completely naked!” “When I added up all the money I’d spent on every stinking diet and fad and jackets to hide my fat....I could have had this procedure done three times over! My cousin in Dallas heard what I was planning and went to a different doctor up there...although I

told her to come down here to Dr. Ahmadi! She paid about the same, got less than half the results, and also suffered all kinds of complications. You have to go to an expert...someone you can really trust. Dr. Ahmadi is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, only operates in an accredited facility, and really cares about your feelings, your health, and your safety! He invented the LipoTuck and he’s perfected it.” after “If you think you can have a procedure like this done and then just continue eating, drinking, and not exercising...think again! What Dr. Ahmadi did for me was absolutely life-changing! Every morning when I get up and get dressed, I feel like before it’s a whole new day! I am committed to exercise and eating less. Nothing tastes as good as looking good makes me feel! Just for fun, I tried on my wedding corset...and it fits! I’m just so happy with after the results!”

hat’s more fun that a road trip with family and friends? Getting all the fun and excitement right down the road from your own front door! At Sugar Land’s own Classic Chevrolet the fun never ends with a “relax and enjoy the difference” vibe the minute you walk through the door, visits from local sports stars and mascots, and community events like the Chili Cookoff. Fort Bend community leader and owner of Classic Chevrolet, Don Kerstetter, says, “People thought we were crazy when we first opened our doors, because no other dealership took our low-key, customer-centered approach. Over the last four years of treating people well and becoming part of the Fort Bend Community, we’ve learned that crazy works!”

Little Car, Big Impact Don says, “Our smallest car, the mini-hatchback Spark, has been really popular with the younger crowd...especially in Salsa red! In fact, the chance to win a 2013 Chevy Spark in our April Free Car Giveaway created quite a stir at the Classic Chili Cookoff. The table to enter for a chance to win a car was as crowded as the booth with the winning chili!”

Classic Chevrolet’s Community Liaison, Ray Aguilar says, “It was such a thrill to notify our March winner that she’d won a 2013 Chevy Sonic. We made the call on April Fool’s Day, and she took a little convincing to believe it was true! Now she and her family are thrilled. You do have to enter the contest every month on our website for your chance to win!” Classic Chevy’s Third Annual Chili Cook-off was a success! Famous R&B Musician and Local Chili Judge Archie Bell got the crowd moving, while the guys from All Out Off Road sold chances to win in a“Chicken Drop” and JROTC students from Stafford High School ran games and a bounce house for the kids. Of course, the main attraction was the chili! A community this size needs a voice, something that reflects the broad opinions, lifestyles and the way we live. But more importantly, a community is made up of people. And people, naturally, have stories. What do your kids think about their schools? Where’s a good place to find a dentist? How about that new place off Hwy 6? Our aim is for you to pick up this magazine and have answers to all of those questions. So if our angle seems a little feel-good or touchy-feely, it’s only because we’re being honest. The people in these pages are our friends, neighbors, co-workers. They could have picked anywhere to live and do business. They chose to do it here. That speaks volumes for them already! ho would you trust to take care of your mom in an emergency? Judge Mullinix knows the answer! After serving as Associate Judge in the 387th Judicial District Court in Fort Bend County, Brenda Mullinx was elected Judge of the 387th Judicial District Court in November 2012. She says, “My mom was visiting from out of town and had an episode late at night. I took her right to St. Michael’s Emergency Room, because I knew Dr. Orsak from around the community.” “The nurses and doctors at St. Michael’s were wonderful! They took her back to an exam room immediately, gave her personal attention and a prompt diagnosis. At no point in the process from walking through the front door to receiving the appropriate treatment did we ever feel overlooked or ignored...someone was always there with us. The waiting room and exam rooms are extremely comfortable. I

was especially impressed with the careful way they asked questions, because even things we might have forgotten to mention could be important. You wouldn’t think that going to an emergency room could be a good experience...but St. Michael’s is the best emergency experience in town!” “If I am asked, based on my positive, personal experience at SM’s, I would certainly never hesitate to recommend their services. In fact, I know a couple from out of town who had an emergency and went to St. Michael’s. They told me later what a great experience they had there, too!” Want to see if St. Michael’s offers an experience as amazing as your mom deserves? Stop by the Grand Expansion Open House and judge for yourself! On May 9 from 4:30-8:30 you and your family are invited to St. Michael’s Open House to celebrate our Grand Expansion of the first free-standing emergency room in Fort Bend. WOMEN’S HEALTH:

Are Your HORMONES Out of Whack? Secret Energy Zappers Dr. Dina White

The Clues:

A

re you dragging yourself through the day, propped up only by coffee and diet Coke? Chronic exhaustion affects your quality of life and keeps you from being your best self. Board-Certified Physician, Dr. Dina White of Natural Solutions Health and Wellness says, “Crushing fatigue can be as debilitating as an illness, but many women just write it off as a fact of their busy lives. My passion as a physician is helping you achieve real wellness for health and happiness every day.” You may think you’re tired because of all the things on your to-do list, but the first place to look should be your hormones. Dr. White says, “Hormone imbalances can lead to symptoms in almost anyone...teens, new mothers, and those going through the midlife transition. I’m here to help my patients understand their choices in Bioidentical Hormones derived from natural plant sources. Bioidentical hormones are able to perform the actions of hormones that are produced by the body with fewer side effects than synthetic options.” When your hormones are out of balance, your life is out of balance, too. You may feel jittery, sluggish, be unable to lose weight, have difficulty thinking clearly, be without a sex drive, and you can even see the effects in your skin and hair. Dr. White says, “Your individual hormones needs are different from anyone else’s. I’ll work with you to find just the custommade formula compounded for you. Sometimes we’ll have to make adjustments to find the perfect hormonal level. I’m not satisfied until you feel your best!” If long periods of intense stress, chronic illness, major surgery or a life-altering event has left you drained, ask Dr. White about adrenal fatigue. She says, “Your adrenal glands 10 ~ upclose ~ May 2013

mobilize your body’s response to every kind of stress––physical, emotional or psychological––through hormones. If your adrenal glands don’t respond to stress or don’t produce enough hormones, you’ll experience some degree of adrenal fatigue. People with adrenal fatigue may look and act relatively normal, but suffer from a general sense of un-wellness and tiredness. There’s not enough caffeine in the world to make up for this kind of fatigue...but we can balance your hormones and give you energy to enjoy life again.” What You Can Do: At Natural Solutions Health and Wellness Dr. White is committed to enabling you to enjoy a better quality of life by helping you maintain health and wellness naturally. She says, “We can handle everything from Botox Injections to cellulite reduction to BioIdentical Hormone Therapy to offer you complete medical and cosmetic care. You can enjoy better health through natural solutions...and take advantage of a range of aesthetic services to rejuvenate and re-energize your life!” NATURAL SOLUTIONS HEALTH AND WELLNESS 832-364-9444 16551 SW Freeway, Ste 100 Sugar Land, TX 77479 www.naturalsolutionslaser.com

AMY SHARP That’s Kim Syma’s philosophy. Kim, with husband Mitch, owns Revolution Studio, the premier indoor cycling studio in Sugar Land’s distinctive Town Square. Kim says, “The way you view and handle a challenge during your workout…you take those same principles and apply it to the tough choices in your everyday life.” After a college career as a cheerleader at UT, Kim moved to New York. She missed being a part of a team and workouts became more work than fun. Kim says, “I’m somewhat embarrassed to say I wasn’t exercising much at all. Then I discovered a small cycling studio in NYC and had my ah-ha! moment. That was 2007 and my dream was hatched. I knew what I wanted to do with my life…and I knew I had to go for it. But I didn’t know much about running a business.” So Kim moved back to Austin and

enrolled in the MBA program at UT…her sole goal to graduate and open up her own cycling studio. The MBA program brought Kim both business knowledge and Mitch. Mitch graduated a year ahead of Kim and took a corporate job in Sugar Land. After her own graduation Kim came to Sugar Land and opened Revolution Studio in Town Square. Now married, the couple own and run the studio together. A class at Revolution Studio is a full body workout on the bike. Every ride incorporates cardio, core, abs, and upper body strength training with light hand weights. It’s also about having an outlet… a release from your day. Kim says, “When class starts, we turn down the lights and ride by candlelight. We create an atmosphere where you’re able to forget everything and everyone around you, so you can workout just for you and ride to the rhythm of the music. Our instructors are the opposite of drill sergeants…they are motivational, inspirational and empowering.” Revolution Studio has no contracts or initiation fees. It’s a pay-per-class model… or one-price for unlimited monthly classes. You can sign up for classes online and even pick your exact bike (much like picking an airline seat). No need to arrive early to score a spot in the front (or the back)! For the month of May Revolution Studio is offering new clients one week of unlimited classes for just $25….so give it a spin today and join the revolution!

hat makes sweet memories? According to life-long friends Thuy Pham and Tuyet Duong, co-owners of Sugar Land’s Nothing Bundt Cakes, it’s the time we spend together. They say, “We know that friendship’s the frosting on the cake of life...and we love seeing all the ways our hand-made cakes are bringing friends and neighbors together in our community!” Attendance at one local PTO meeting doubled once the word got out that Nothing Bundt Cakes delectables would be there. These cakes have been spotted (and enjoyed) at events for the Fort Bend Education Foundation, the Fort Bend Women’s Center, and the Fort Bend Literacy Council. Teachers, doctors, and coaches love receiving a “Bundtlet” (priced under $5) or a beautifully-wrapped Bundtlet tower. Instead of a box of donuts, a box of their bite sized “Bundtinis” gives a little extra flair to a sweet gesture. And the larger Bundt cakes are available frosted with their signature butter cream cheese frosting, seasonal decorations, custom corporate design, and for any occasion you can imagine! Once you discover Nothing Bundt Cakes, you’ll want to share the joy! Each one is handcrafted from eggs, flour, and butter to always be moist and delicious...just the way mom used to make them! Drop by the shop for samples... and a selection of nostalgic gifts. Thuy says, “Everyone has a different favorite flavor––

Lemon, Red Velvet, Chocolate Chocolate Chip. Try our featured flavor Pineapple Upside Down Bundt in May...before it’s gone!” Whether it’s a business meeting, a celebration, or just Friday night with your family, bringing or sending a cake is a sweet gesture that everyone appreciates! Tuyet says, “We always have cakes in all sizes ready for pickup and others you can order over the phone, in the store or online. Your Home, Your Flooring, Your Family Sarah Warburton hat brings a place into your heart? The people you find when you walk through the door! Since All About Carpet and Floors first opened its doors in Sugar Land over twenty years ago, the McKelvey family has helped this community grow. Renee McKelvey says, “We have customers whose carpets we’ve been cleaning for twenty years, whose kids we’ve seen grow up, and customers came to us for one house...and then had us do the flooring in their next four homes as well. We value the relationships we’ve built more than anything else...and we want you to know how much we appreciate all your support!” How did All About Carpet become an enduring Sugar Land favorite? Renee and Bob McKelvey worked as flooring inspectors, then did carpet cleaning, repairing, and restoration after water damage. Their customers started asking for advice on new flooring choices...and their retail business, All About Carpet and Flooring, was born! The showroom on Highway 6 has been a one-stop-shop for tile, hardwood, laminate, countertops, and all the things that come together to make your house into a home. Shaun and Steven McKelvey grew up in the business, riding the trucks with the cleaning crews, playing or doing their homework in the showroom, and getting to know all the installers and other local businesses that All About Carpet has trusted for years. Were they born with an eye for design and a commitment to customer service...or is that just a result of their upbringing? Either way, you can enjoy the benefits when you need flooring, tile, and the best service in town. Shaun says, “People are always amazed when they walk through the door and my mom remembers them. That’s just the way we do things. It’s more than flooring or countertops to us...it’s working for families and in their homes. We never forget that!” “We are so grateful for the community’s overwhelming support over this difficult year without Bob,” says Renee. “You mean more to us than you could ever know and we are so very thankful for you. I pursued a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with a fellowship in brain injury...and have since focused on patients with both neurological struggles and spinal injuries. It’s an area where I can take a holistic approach to help patients in their lifestyle, medical management and through neurological therapy.” Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Dr. Patel says, “In the last decade, we’ve made huge advancements in the treatment of stroke. If a clotting agent is administered quickly enough, it reduces the amount of disability. Try to keep risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes under control.”

The Countdown to Mother’s Day

B

Matt Harris efore you start rushing around, looking for flowers or chocolates or cards for Mother’s Day, stop and think about what mom really needs. The best gift for your mother this year can be taking good care of your parents…the way they took care of you for so many years. Even if your Mom and Dad don’t complain about their plumbing, chances are it’s started to give them trouble. A dripping faucet, leaky hose bib, or running toilet may not seem like a big problem, but it’s money down the drain every month...money your parents could be saving. Take a look at mom’s monthly water bills. If her bill for March 2013 is much greater than her bill for March 2012, that’s another sign of trouble. Alan’s Plumbing can check out their old pipes, inspect an ancient hot water heater or install some grab bars in those deep tubs for extra safety. It can be hard for your parents to admit they need help, but when it’s presented as a gift, they really appreciate it. Don’t let your mom be taken advantage of by some “big name, small heart” plumbing company. At Alan’s Plumbing, two mothers and six brothers—Alan, his two brothers and his three sons—work together to deliver generations of plumbing excellence.

The other team member, Zach, has the same attitude towards hard work and good values. The whole team at Alan’s Plumbing believes in earning your business the old-fashioned way––through courtesy, experience, and giving the best prices on the good work they do. Their trucks are all “no cell-phone zones” and they’ll give your mom the attention and respect she deserves. When you call Alan’s Plumbing, you’ll be talking to Alan’s mom or his wife, Jennifer, the

“heartbeats of the company.” For a burst pipe, a clogged drain, a new hot water heater, or troubled toilet, make sure your mom has the number of a plumber she can trust! Just attach an Alan’s Plumbing card to those Mother’s Day flowers with a note: “You’ll be hearing from Jennifer, Mom, and Alan’s team will fix all your plumbing problems. Happy Mother’s Day!” Alan’s Plumbing • 281-261-1064

e want to change the way people think about skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers,” says David Hill, Administrator of Chelsea Gardens. “When people are in pleasant surroundings that preserve their independence and dignity, they can devote themselves to intense therapy and see real results!” What makes Chelsea Gardens so special? Maybe it’s the choice of creative and mouthwatering meals prepared and served on china by Chef Bill. We hear they receive rave reviews from patients and staff alike! Maybe it’s the hallways filled with natural light, the beautician or barber services, or the welcoming social room and vibrant activities program. Or could it be the generous private rooms, each with its own private bathroom and shower, that give patients the same privacy they would enjoy in a hotel or spa retreat? Round-the-clock nursing care, on-site therapy services, and sixty beds (including six Medicaid beds) means that you’ll find everything you’d expect from a nursing and rehabilitation center....and so very much more! In this boutique, luxury environment, you can get the short-term intense therapy you need. In fact, the spacious therapy room is located front and center as you enter the building. Director of Operations, Denise Martin, says, “Through Trinity Rehabilitation, we have caring, experienced Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapists whose goal is to help our patients build their strength and skills until they have the ability to transition back to their homes. hat are some of the things that you remember your mother reminding you to do? Always tell the truth, be polite, put your toys away, make up your bed, clean your room... hasn’t keeping the house clean always been her favorite demand? A clean home is a happy home, and although we’d all love to keep mom happy, cleaning the house ourselves is nobody’s favorite chore and even when done it never seems to be up to her standards. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Professional Maid Service is here to help you give your mom the sparkling house she’s always tried so hard to maintain. Mom works hard enough as it is, and we all know she deserves a little break from the housework. Local cleaning expert and owner of Professional Maid service Max McCammond says, “When you give someone the gift of regular cleanings, what you’re really giving them is a break...and time to enjoy life!”

Maybe mom will finally be able to get that longneeded massage or pedicure, or even just spend quality time with the family. Only the best is good enough for your mother... and the best is what the professionals deliver. They arrive in a company car, wearing uniforms, and are licensed and bonded for your peace of mind. Take mom out to a nice lunch, and Professional Maids can have the house sparkling by the time you come back. As much as our mothers do for us, the least we can do for them is take a load off their shoulders. Since a house that meets “Mom’s Standards” are a challenge for the rest of us,, this is a clean best left to professionals.

Have Your Shoes Damaged Your Feet? Maggie Beil f you’ve been wearing super-cute, super-uncomfortable shoes with tight toes or high heels, you may have noticed some changes in your big toe. Don’t wait to take action! A bony enlargement on the big toe joint called a bunion can cause disfigurement and pain while walking (even in comfortable shoes). Board-certified foot surgeon, Dr. Marco A Vargas of Foot & Ankle Associates says, “Up to fifty percent of all women have bunions, but they can also affect men. Decades ago, bunions were just a fact of life...but now we can treat your bunions and get you back to an active, pain-free life! Bunions are more than just a cosmetic issue...they can really knock you off your feet! Dr. Vargas says, “A severe bunion not only forces the big toe out of alignment, it causes a chain reaction so that your second and third toe become painfully misaligned as well. In the worst cases, patients suffer from constant pain and may be at risk of arthritis. If we catch the problem early enough, we can try to correct your bunions with protective cushions, orthotics, and properly-fitting shoes. If you need more extensive correction, we now have a

wonderful alternative to traditional bunion surgery.” Until recently, if you needed bunion surgery (osteotomy bunionectomy), you were looking at six to eight weeks of recovery on crutches following surgery. Now a new procedure called the “tightrope bunionectomy” corrects the joint misalignment, prevents recurrence of the deformity, and allows you to be on your feet in a boot right away. Dr. Vargas says, “Instead of cutting down the bone to remove a bunion, we use x-ray guidance and thin, extremely strong sutures to create a ‘tightrope’ between your first and second toe to correct the alignment. Because the tightrope bunionectomy is a less-invasive surgical option, you’ll be back on your feet right away and back to your normal activities quickly.” If bunions are slowing you down, it’s time to see the Foot Pros. A Powerful Weapon against Heart Disease

W

omen worried about heart disease easily spend thousands of dollars a year to prevent it… pricey prescription medicines, shelves of healthy-eating cookbooks, expensive inhome fitness machines and gym memberships. What they don’t realize is that they probably already own two powerful weapons against cardiovascular disease.

Come in as a patient and leave as a friend!

They cost less than $3 and are sitting on the bathroom counter…your toothbrush and dental floss! We’ve always known that a little prevention goes a long way, but we used to think of it in terms of avoiding cavities. But now it seems that by using your toothbrush and floss you are also preventing much more serious health problems down the road. Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. of Stafford says, “Women who take care of their teeth and receive regular dental care reduce their risk of heart attacks, stroke and other cardiovascular problems by at least one-third! There is a link between periodontal infections and heart disease. We’ve found that the presence of common problems in the mouth, including gum disease (gingivitis), cavities, and missing teeth, are as good at predicting heart disease as cholesterol levels.” What is the best way to avoid problems in your mouth? Dr. Lomonte says, “Prevention. Prevention. Prevention! The age old advice still stands. Brush and floss regularly and see your dentist at least twice a year. If there are

signs of periodontal disease, I can help you clear them up. It’s fairly easy to do, and while you’re at it…you’ll be getting rid of a potential risk factor for heart disease!” Still at his original location on Murphy Road, Dr. Lomonte has been giving Fort Bend families great smiles for over twentyeight years. He and his staff take pride in greeting you as a patient...and waving goodbye to you as a friend. He has been in practice long enough that he now sees second and third generation patients. From April Showers to HurricaneReady I

t’s May! We’ve made it through the April showers…and boy, did Fort Bend County see some April showers this year. Several severe thunderstorms laden with heavy rain and strong winds, and a few areas hit by hail. Have you checked your roof? “Your roof is only as strong as its weakest point,” says Joe Rangel of Allegiance Roofing (a division of Joe Rangel Contracting LLC). “When storms blow through like the ones we had in April, you can’t see the damage from the ground… and you need to make sure your roof is ready now! Texas hurricane season starts June 1st!” But how do you know if your roof sustained damage if you can’t see it? Joe says, “We want to offer everyone peace of mind after a storm. That’s why we offer free, no-obligation inspections. When you see your neighbors getting their roofs repaired, give us a call for an inspection. Should your roof need repairs, we’ll give you a free on-site estimate...and we stand behind any work we do one hundred percent!” If you need repair or replacement, Allegiance will handle all the ins and outs...even claiming any repair or replacement work with your insurance company. Joe says, “We know what a hassle it can be to deal with the insurance company. If you have been in a storm and our free inspection reveals damage…you do not need to make another call. Our staff will work with your insurance company, so your claim is handled quickly and effectively.” Rest assured…with Allegiance, your roof is in good hands. Joe’s entire team has passed the Certainteed Quality Master Exam and the Master Shingle Applicator Exam. Allegiance Roofing has achieved the elite certification of “Select Shingle Master Company.” Only 1% of roofing contractors within the United States are authorized by Certainteed to offer 3 STAR, 4 STAR, and 5 STAR extended warranties. With over fifty years of combined experience, Allegiance Roofing has built a reputation in the greater Houston area for solid work. Did you see the team from Allegiance working on a neighbor’s roof or at the Cinco de Mayo fundraiser for Fort Bend Seniors at La Cocina or the Cinco de Mayo festival at Legacy Ford where they were presenting sponsors at both events? Joe says, “We’ve been in this community for a long time, and we’re always happy to provide references. Our pledge to you is our WORKMANSHIP and it shows!!

Simply and Functionally Amazing

Amy Sharp ne Fort Bend mom knew what she wanted for her daughter’s room. She had a single wall to fill…and she wanted all built-ins. Sophia says, “I wanted to fill the wall with cabinets, bookshelves, a window seat and a desk. Having seen Steve’s house, I knew I wanted him to build it for me. His house is amazing…and he did nearly all of the work himself!” After looking at the space, Steve Procter, owner of Procter Custom Woodworking, gave this mom his opinion and options. Sophia says, “He thought of things I hadn’t. He explained how drawers were much more functional for kids than cabinets with doors. I ended up going with the drawers, and I’m so happy I did. It’s very simple for my daughter to put things away. I mentioned that I ultimately wanted wood flooring, and Steve suggested I put it in first. Steve put in beautiful hardwood floors and base boarding. We also added crown molding to the room and recessed lighting in

the built-in. It looks really neat at night, and it was totally Steve’s idea. It’s wonderful! My daughter’s room is just the beginning...I have lots of ideas for my house, and I am excited for Steve to help me bring them to life!” Whether you are looking for big architectural mill-work (moldings, wall panels, windows/door casings), a major room remodel (kitchens, studies), a one-off piece (built-ins, bookcases, entertainment centers) or a fun practical children’s piece, Steve can build it. Steve says, “I spend a lot of time with my clients understanding what they really need. And I’m always looking for ways to fully utilize space and add

functionality. I like to give people that extra edge of functionality, while keeping the work aesthetically pleasing and beautiful.” Sophia says, “Steve’s attention to detail is amazing and it really shows in his house...which is also his showroom!” With two in-ceiling domes, an intricate home theater setup, lots of custom cabinetry, molding, trim, built-ins, furniture and children’s pieces, you’ll be blown away by the possibilities! hat unites a lawn business, a school, and a summer camp? A mission to help others! Richard Kelly and Lisha Vanar say, “We started our lawn business, Amazing Grass, as an educational project for kids and young adults with educational differences such as ADD, Autism, Dyslexia and Tourettes syndrome. These guys learn by doing...to be part of a team, to build stamina, and to achieve their goals. That was the first step on the road to Launch Academy.” Richard started an after school tutoring service in his free time. He says, “Then parents approached me about starting a general vocational program. Amazing Grass had been maintaining the grounds and garden at Parkway United Methodist. When I asked the pastor about classroom space. He said “I can do better than that...how about a whole floor?” We started with a vocation program running the lawn service, training as baristas in the church coffee shop, and learning computer repair. We added music and art, then supplemental classes for homeschooled students. Now we have an accredited curriculum through Holt-McDougal and a unique college fast-track program.” Kids (ages 12-19) with developmental challenges can sample the camaraderie and encouragement of Launch Academy through the Teen Summer Camps. Lisha says, “We’ll keep the mornings for academic tutoring, research projects, and group presentations. In the afternoons we’ll do fun summer stuff like fishing, gardening, paintball, pool parties, and surf lessons. I’ll never forget taking a student fishing for the first time...and being there when he caught his first fish! We want these kids to build confidence and friendships in a supportive environment with low ratios (1:5). They can blow off steam through physical activity, learn socialization, build academic skills and get the perfect blend of routine and flexibility.” As seen on the Fox news segment on Amazing Grass, these students really do “Learn to Work, Work to Learn!” “On the first day at Amazing Grass,” says Richard, “someone with autism may only work twenty minutes...but the incentive of getting paid and the positive social pressure from the rest of the team makes a difference. Our basic lawn package is a mow, cut, edge, and blow, but we’ve done all the landscaping around a pool and do really well on commercial properties like churches. The only things we don’t do are bulldozers and sprinklers!” Launch Academy in Parkway United Methodist Church 832-457-2560 5801 New Territory Blvd. Sugar Land, Texas www.launchacademy.info www.amazinggrasscompany.com

They blame their sugar and carb cravings, inability to lose weight, insomnia, lack of energy, mood swings, depression and lack of sex drive on the busy schedules of their children. But hormonal imbalance can have a huge physiological affect on a woman…perhaps

Have You Checked “Cindy’s List?” Many people rely on “Cindy’s list” when they need a referral...and when they ask about an air conditioning company, All Out A/C is her top pick. After all, Cindy’s sister and brother, her son, mother, niece and neighbors have all used all Out A/C at their homes in Katy, Greatwood, and Memorial. She says, “When I recommend a company to my clients, it’s my reputation on the line. That’s why I always use each company myself, first...and I’m very particular. If they can please me, they can please anyone! All Out A/C replaced my entire air conditioning and heating system three years ago. It was getting old and I wanted to take advantage of the tax credits to get it replaced. That was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Other than seasonal check-ups, I haven’t needed them to come out since!” “I refer my clients to All Out A/C with total confidence. In fact, I recommend that my clients call All Out A/C for a full inspection of the air conditioning and heating systems before buying a house. A standard home inspection checks only if those systems turn on and off, but All Out A/C will give you an honest evaluation of their condition so you can make an informed offer. Bryan only hires technicians he trusts and they don’t recommend work that you don’t need. Their service is quick, their quotes are low, and their work is excellent! ” “I know what it is to build a business based on referrals. All Out A/C is growing by leaps and bounds just because of the way they do business. I’ve even referred them to other realtors...and I always get rave reviews!” Get more information about Cindy at www.cindybeach.com.

“I

’ve known Bryan Bellamy aka Mr. AC for over thirty years,” says local real estate broker Cindy Beach, “so when he and Chance Kamp opened All Out A/C I didn’t hesitate to call. Both Bryan and I share the same business philosophy: to treat others the way we’d want to be treated ourselves. When you’re dealing with honest people, you know you’ll get good work and a good price!”
