e asked local home theater experts, Richard Machemehl and Scott Crain of Home Theater Evolutions why technology has to be complicated to make your life easier? Richard says, “It shouldn’t be! If you’re juggling a bunch of remote controls or trying to figure out a complicated security pad, your system isn’t working for you. We love the new Savant system, the industry’s only Apple-based control and automation system. Everything— from the design of the docking system to the user-friendly interface—is designed to be intelligent and extremely easy to use…the way the best technology should be!” Customize your choices so that the icons that appear are the ones you actually use, swipe through photos of your security system, entertainment choices, and lighting options, and retain complete control…even when you’ve left the house. Scott says, “You can use your iPad or your iPod Touch or your iPhone to control different areas of your home. We love this system because Apple’s technology and interface are innovative, powerful and affordable! Savant’s desktop and in-wall cradles for your iPads allow people to buy five, six, or even seven iPad controllers for the price of 2 ~ UPCLOSE ~ November 2010

ment Can’t Be Smart? one traditional touch panel.” How entertaining is the new Savant system? Imagine the end of a long day. You reach into your pocket for your iPhone as you pull into the driveway. A quick tap of your finger disarms your security system, closes your blinds, adjusts the room temperature, and turns on a few lights. You start your favorite movie in the kitchen while you make some dinner, pause it there and continue watching it in your home theater room. Now you have amazing control over all aspects of your home at a third the price of previous systems. And like every solution from Home Theatre Evolutions, Richard and Scott will handle the installation and set-up, so you’ll get a completely customized experience that’s userfriendly and super-simple from start to finish. Friends since the second grade, Richard and Scott share a lifelong obsession with electronics. A few years back, they started a custom electronics installation business. Richard says, “Our customers called us for recommendations on products, so we decided to offer the ones we trust to deliver quality and value.” Scott adds, “We’ve always placed the highest priority on customer service. That’s why we offer free in-home consultations, up-front pricing, and personalized attention. Both of us have always loved electronics, ever since we were kids. Helping people find just what they need in our own store is a dream come true… and now our kids, my son Sean and Richard’s son Nikolas, are best friends, too!” Listen to 790 the Sports Animal at 1:30 on Tuesdays, and you can hear Texans player Jacoby Jones talk about the TV and surround sound installation Home Theater Evolutions did for him. hen we’re looking for a professional to go to for a new service what do we do? We turn to a knowledgeable and trusted source. We ask a friend, or a valued colleague for a recommendation. This makes us feel positive and secure in our choices. So when a doctor you trust recommends another doctor, would you feel confident going to them for a surgical procedure? That is precisely what happened with Kyle Chaddock. Kyle maintains a very active lifestyle and has 2 acres of land that he works on daily. He had some large varicose veins on his leg that were constantly stinging. A doctor that he was already working with suggested that he see Dr. Baltazar of Sugar Land Vein Specialists for a free consultation to see about taking care of the enlarged veins before they turned into a greater problem. His first visit with Dr. Baltazar was a pleasant one, “He was a very nice guy and made me feel at ease.” During the initial consultation, Dr. Baltazar did a detailed interview, a physical examination and an ultrasound all the while openly communicating with Kyle about what was going on and possible choices of how to proceed. Dr. Baltazar gave Kyle the time to feel comfortable and he answered any questions that he asked. Together they chose a plan of action. The procedure was done at Dr. Baltazar’s office and Kyle’s recovery was quick and easy. “I have no more stinging and the bumps are gone. I’ve had several operations but this one was the easiest of all.” And after the procedure Kyle was not forgotten, Dr. Baltazar checked in with him regularly and Kyle liked that he could call the office day or night and they would answer any question or concern he had. Dr. Baltazar holds himself and his staff to high standards. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in both General and Vascular Surgery and both he and Sugar Land Vein Specialists are dedicated exclusively to the treatment of varicose veins. Their goal is to offer every patient a safe, comfortable and easy procedure with true expertise and the best treatment possible. “I could tell Dr. Baltazar really knew what he was doing as well as his staff,” said Kyle. Some patients are even fellow medical professionals. What an amazing vote of confidence. If you have varicose veins why wait any longer to get them taken care of when we have one of the best and highly recommended vein specialists here in the Sugar Land area? The treatment of varicose veins is covered by most insurance and Dr. Baltazar offers a free vein screening during regular office visits. Varicose veins of any sort is an indication of improper blood flow and can lead to some serious complications so don’t wait until the pain or stinging worsens. Now is the time. Call today.

Pain Management Improves Quality of Life- Free Seminars

E

veryone experiences pain. It’s not pleasant, but fortunately, for most of us it’s temporary. For those who experience chronic pain, though, it can be debilitating. Cheryl White, M.D., and Abraham Thomas, M.D., two of the board certified pain specialists at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, answer some common questions about treating pain.

Dr. White: We treat a variety of conditions associated with pain, including shingles, fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, postsurgery pain, chronic regional pain syndrome, and back and neck pain. Because there are so many types of pain – and also because each patient reacts differently to treatments – we take an individualized approach to each case.

Q: Why is pain management so important? Dr. White: Chronic pain can affect every facet of a person’s life. If someone is in pain, it can damage their family relationships, their performance at work, their enjoyment of life and their ability to sleep. Managing pain is very important, and yet, in general, patients experiencing chronic pain don’t always seek medical attention.

Q: What treatments do you use? Dr. Thomas: Epidural steroid injections are a common and effective treatment for many patients. In some cases we use medications including muscle relaxants, nerve pain medicines and anti-inflammatory medications. We also rely on a variety of procedures to relieve pain, such as radio frequency lesioning (RFL), which burns some of the sensory nerves to block pain transmission, or spinal cord stimulation, a cutting-edge procedure in which electrodes are used to block pain transmission. We may refer patients to physical therapy or have the patient consult a surgeon.

Q: What’s the psychological impact of chronic pain? Dr. Thomas: Stress and pain go hand-in-hand. If you have pain, you often become stressed out, and then the stress makes the pain worse. But if we can alleviate the pain through treatment, a patient’s outlook brightens. Managing pain can improve quality of life. Q: What are some of the most common causes of the pain you treat?

Q: When should a patient seek further treatment? Dr. White: While not all pain can be cured, it can be managed – especially if back or neck pain is keeping you from taking part in everyday activities. Our team of pain specialists

She Looked Like an Ordinary Baby… Sarah Warburton

ut to infertile parents around the world, Louise Brown was a true miracle. Born in 1978, she was the first of over four million babies to be conceived through the groundbreaking procedure, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), developed by English biologist Robert G. Edwards and now-deceased physician Patrick Steptoe. Now that Robert Edwards has won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, we asked our local expert, triple board-certified doctor, Dr. Subodh Chauhan, to tell us more about these amazing advances and what they mean for families here in Sugar Land. After the first IVF baby was born, doctors began working to help couples struggling with low-sperm count. Dr. Chauhan says, “In 1992, ICSI (intra cytoplasmic sperm injection) allowed an embryologist to inject sperm into the egg. This was a significant advance for couples where men had low sperm count, which is a factor 40 % of the time with infertile couples. Later the process known

as TESE allowed us to obtain sperm from a biopsy of testicular tissue. Couples who would have probably not been able to conceive were able to have babies of their own with these methods.” “Our goal as fertility specialists has always been to help families conceive happy, healthy babies,” says Dr. Chauhan. “In the late 1980s we were able to detect abnormal chromosomes in embryos by Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). At that time, only 7-8 chromosomes were evaluated due to technological limitations. In the 1990’s couples with a family history of debilitating disease could have the genes of the embryo checked at conception using PGD. Recently Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) can detect all chromosomes and is presumed to give higher success rate. Every year brings new innovations as we strive to make it safer and easier for previously infertile couples to conceive.” Over five thousand babies have been brought into the world with the fertility treatments and IVF program at the Fertility Specialists of Houston.

Dr. Chauhan says, “The first parents to go through this procedure back in 1978 really touch my heart with their bravery. Thanks to them, we have many more resources to help infertile couples making their dream come true today.” Fertility Specialists of Houston 4724 Sweetwater Blvd, Ste 105 Sugar Land, TX 77479 832-553-5IVF (5483) www.fshivf.com

Use It Or Lose It! I Sarah Warburton f you choose the couch over the gym and your only exercise regime is regularly skipping your workout, you’ll lose your muscle tone. You’ve got to “use it or you’ll lose it!” The same holds true for your medical flexible savings account funds or your dental benefits. If you don’t use them before the end of the year, you could lose them! Dr. Laurena Moore Powell of Powell Dental Care says, “Your family needs regular dental checkups...and this is the best time to take care of your dental health and enjoy your health benefits, too.” How hectic is your life? When you’re juggling work and family, it can be hard to remember if you’re coming or going. As the mother of four children, Dr. Moore Powell understands. She says, “The easiest way to prevent problems is to make and keep regular checkups. My husband, Dr. Marty Powell and I always prefer to catch problems early and save you money, too! Using your pretax income for medical expenses makes your money go farther, but only if you actually use those dollars. Letting time run out on those benefits isn’t good for your wallet…or for your health.”

Frédéric Perrier, trained in Michelin starred restaurants and won acclaim in New York as an Executive Chef requested by celebrities and heads of state. In New York, he met Michelle, now his wife. She says, “We wanted to raise our family where I grew up…right here in Texas. Now Frédéric and I have two boys and two restaurants just a mile from our house…with a third restaurant on the way.” It’s the perfect life for an innovative and creative chef and a happy dad…and we get to reap the delicious benefits! Have you been to Fort Bend’s only 3-star restaurant? Aura was honored as one of Houston Chronicle’s top ten new restaurants because of Chef Perrier’s original approach to some of our old favorites. At Aura, fries might appear as “Manchego Dusted Pommes Frites,” with a little chef-inspired twist, truffle oil “for more fun!” says Chef Perrier. An inviting lunch menu makes the perfect mid-day escape and prix-fixe “Sunset” three-course menu for under twenty-five dollars means treating yourself doesn’t have to be a splurge. And the dinner menu has choices for the conservative (Pan-seared flounder with crabmeat or Steak Diane) and for the adventurous…check the changing special list for Thai, Italian, or Mexican-influenced creations and whimsically mouth-watering treats like the “surf and turf” where Chef Perrier sandwiched braised short ribs between halves of glossy sea scallops in a burgundy reduction. Michelle says, “Frédéric is only happy if he’s actually cooking—not just creating or expediting a menu— so an intimate restaurant, close to home is the perfect thing for him.” Tired of the standard “sack” or a “boxed lunch” choices? Visit Chef Perrier’s Meat and Greet, just three doors down. At this

European Butcher Shop and Gourmet Deli sandwiches appear on fantastic breads and rolls with quality ingredients, exciting combinations, and prices that will make you do a double-take. Seriously? The sack lunch (a sandwich, a side, and a cookie) OR the box lunch (a sandwich, a side, a soup, and any dessert) are each under ten dollars! With choices like Roast Beef with roasted pepper, shaved red onion, gorgonzola, and horseradish on ciabatta or a Cuban press jazzed up with black bean chipotle mayo and desserts like the “white and dark chocolate hybrid” and my personal favorite, the crème brulee, this is the new spot for a quick lunch or a box to go. Additional choices like burgers, crab cakes, and salads tempt any taste bud! Bring your friends, your kids… even the whole baseball team to Chef Perrier’s newest venture…Hoggs N Chicks, a “Fine Food Shack.” Longing for chicken-fried chicken or Cuban style pulled pork? Miracles Happen Daily Dr. Leslie Cohan, M.D.

I

would find it close to impossible to be an atheist and work in labor and delivery…because here miracles occur daily. It sounds a little corny, but it’s true. I’ve been delivering babies for twenty years and it never gets old. Okay, maybe the 3 a.m. part gets a little old, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world! Even though my nineteen-year-old daughter grew up watching me leave the house at three in the morning and having to miss her plays, teacher conferences and field trips…she’s decided she wants to be an Ob-gyn and will one day take over my practice. Her interest really started three years ago on Thanksgiving, when she came to the hospital with me to watch me deliver twins. The look on her face when she saw the babies born was incredible and her “aweI was some” took on a new meaning. One of my most memorable deliveries occurred years ago, but I remember it as if it were yesterday. The parents had an older child and after years of trying had finally gotten pregnant again, only to lose the baby. Maybe the medical textbooks say the loss was a fetus…but to this family the loss was that of a baby with their son’s smile and her father’s dimples. They were devastated. Then they got pregnant again with twins! At the delivery, the wife looked at her husband and thanked him over and over again, for continuing to try and for believing in her. She was crying, he was crying, the tech and nurse were crying… and I was too. (The fact that I was pregnant made it even more poignant) Dr. Cohan and her daughter Kailey

a first year medical student headed for a career in genetics when my sister-in-law had a baby and let me observe… and from that moment I was hooked. I couldn’t imagine a more rewarding occupation. It’s true that things don’t always go the way we’d hoped in labor and delivery. Sometimes a premature baby doesn’t make it, or the baby is born with birth defects, or we suffer an unexplained fetal demise. But more often this field is touching, inspiring, emotional and wonderful. When it ceases to be, that’s when I’ll know it’s time to retire and hand the practice over to my own daughter. Wonders Never Cease! Sarah Warburton or nine months, local compounding pharmacist, Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. and his wife were preparing their home for the arrival of a new baby. Dr. Campbell says, “When we had the ultrasound done, we were told it was a boy. My two other children, Cole and Chloe were excited about a new brother…but we had a wonderful surprise on the big day. You could have knocked me over with a feather when they told me my wife had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl! After they picked me up off the floor, I was so happy. Instead of baby Caleb we welcomed baby Catilyn…and we couldn’t be happier!” You have to be ready to roll with the changes in life and Dr. Campbell is uniquely qualified to do that. As a compounding pharmacist, he knows

F

how to work around complications and unexpected twists. He says, “I never know what a doctor will order or what reactions a patient will have. We work together to find the best solution for the individual. I might change hard-to-swallow pills into easy-to-use transdermal creams for seniors, or bitter-tasting medicine into cherryflavored gummi bears for kids, or make medicine for your pets into bacon-flavored treats.” Sometimes the unexpected happens on a large scale…as in the case of last year’s national shortage of the popular thyroid medication, Armour Thyroid. Dr. Campbell can compound a replacement that will work for you. On a smaller scale, if your child surprises you with a sensitivity to dyes, gluten or other additives, Dr. Campbell can make your medication with all the ingredients you need and none of the ones you don’t! He says, “Working together with local doctors, I’m able to find creative, effective ways to help people. My primary goal is always to give to my patients more alternatives to improve their lives!” When life takes you by surprise, you need a pharmacist who can handle every unexpected twist and turn. Dr. Campbell says, “In this job and in life, you can’t plan for everything and you have to be ready for anything! We were expecting a boy for nine months, but baby Caitlyn had the last laugh on everyone…and we wouldn’t have it any other way!” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy 281-980-2555 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 www.CampbellsCompounding.com

Everybody Sees It Coming!

Sarah Warburton o you have to hold this magazine at arm’s length to read it? Are you wondering what happened to the eyesight you enjoyed in your twenties? You’re not losing your vision or your mind…just your flexibility. Once we hit our forties (and beyond), the lenses of our eyes lose flexibility, making it harder to focus on close objects. Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source says, “Many people develop presbyopia in their forties or later, but we’ve got plenty of options to give you clear vision again.” Whether you’re nearsighted, farsighted, or enjoy 20/20 vision, presbyopia can sneak up on anyone. “Actually,” says Dr. Doan, “even if you suddenly notice that you’re having dif ficulty focusing on close objects, presbyopia slowly develops over time. As the lens of your eye becomes less flexible, it becomes harder to focus

D

clearly on objects that are close. Many people find that the first signs of presbyopia are holding the newspaper or a menu at arm’s length, blurred vision at normal reading distance and eye fatigue along with headaches when doing close work. Take those signs as reminders that it’s time for your vision checkup.” Ready to explore your options? Dr. Doan may recommend contact lenses, bifocals, progressive lenses or simple reading glasses. She says” Bifocal lenses contain two points of focus…a large portion for distance and the smaller, lower portion for close work. Progressive lenses offer a more gradual visual transition between the two prescriptions, so you won’t see that tell-tale line between the top and bottom of your lenses. If you don’t care to wear your glasses all the time or you already wear contacts for distance, you may be able to wear separate reading glasses for close work. Some contact lens wearers opt for monovision by wearing one contact lens for distance and another for close work. Others find this uncomfortable and prefer multifocal contact lenses for the effect of bifocals…without the glasses!”

Each birthday brings new changes to your vision, so give your eyes the gift of a comprehensive eye exam with Dr. Doan. tudents come from as far as Willowbrook and Rosenberg to find success at this unique co-ed private school, the Turning Point Academy (TPA). In their luxurious home, Carol Appelbaum offers an academically-challenging, boutique-learning experience; guaranteed to prepare students for success in college, business, and life! We spoke to two students preparing for graduation about their plans for the future and their experience at TPA. “I think people would be surprised at how social TPA is,” says Adelle. “I fit in fine at other schools, but I just wasn’t getting as much done as I wanted. Now that I’m at the Turning Point Academy, I can really make the most of my time. Yesterday, I took dual-credit classes at Wharton Junior College in the morning, then I studied at TPA. After school I had a private volleyball lesson and personal training at a local sports facility. Then I volunteered— coaching a kids’ development program and we played for a while before dinner with my mom.” Now Adelle is trying to choose between a military school (her first choice is the Naval Academy) and one of the several divisionone colleges like Colgate and Rice that are trying to recruit her. She says, “I want to major in Business Administration and minor in engineering. The Turning Point Academy really gave me the high academic standards and the personal freedom that I needed!” “Before TPA, I was never going to graduate on time!” says Sarah. “I’d been to boarding school and my credits were all messed up. At TPA I’m never bored because I set my own pace…and I finished my English course in two months. Since

we don’t switch classes and we don’t have any arbitrary bells, there aren’t any distractions. The environment is so comfortable, there’s no gossip or rumors— it’s completely drama-free. I have an after-school job and I love knowing I can hang out with my friends and do other things without a guilt trip, because TPA is set up so I can do all my work at school…and I’m set to graduate on time!” After graduation, Sarah has a different life plan. She says, “I’m active in my local church. After graduation, I’ll go to a Missions college in Idaho. My goal is to minister to people around the world and help them out of desperate circumstances. I know TPA is a college preparatory school, but we also focused on goal-setting and success principles, real life-skills I can use!” On May 14 Sarah and Adelle will graduate at the same time as groups from all over the US from the NEW College Preparatory Academy (TPA’s curriculum). And TPA’s own Adelle Buede will be recognized as a Distinguished Graduate with highest honors. If Progress Reports and Report Cards have

Where Do Tooth Fairies Turn for Help? Sarah Warburton

B

eing a tooth fairy is really hard work. Every night there are so many homes to visit, so many pillows to lift, so many teeth to collect. Whew! That’s why the very best tooth fairies ask for a little help. At Little People’s Dentistry, Dr. Bianca Sanchez says, “Helping out tooth fairies is one of my favorite jobs…but all my little friends are welcome to bring me their tricky, wiggly teeth and their questions, too!” Did you know that tooth fairies are not very good at math? It’s true! Dr. Sanchez says, “Tooth fairies might give a quarter, a dollar, or accidently pay too much! I know one tooth fairy who thought each tooth was worth the same as the age of the child who lost it. That wasn’t too expensive when the first teeth came out, because most kids lose their front teeth when they’re five or six. But the canines and back molars come out when kids are ten or even twelve…even a tooth fairy who doesn’t know multiplication knows those teeth get pricey really fast! I tell all the tooth fairies that if the math’s too tricky, you can always give a little toy or a good book instead.”

Infinity Makeup!

Just because tooth fairies sometimes get lost or come a day late doesn’t mean they’re easy to trick. Dr. Sanchez says, “I had one little friend who thought he could sneak out his little brother’s wiggly tooth and put it under his own pillow… but the tooth fairy wasn’t fooled. Your tooth fairy only wants your teeth, and she (or he) wants them to be shiny and healthy, so be sure to brush after every meal and floss every night!” Each tooth fairy is different…but they all get excited when they find a shiny tooth! Dr. Sanchez says, “I have a treat for Little People’s Dentistry patients who share tooth fairy stories with me… and you’ll enter a contest to appear as an

What’s the News? Sarah Warburton s it turns out, old news can make the front page of today’s paper when it comes to your ankles. Ankle (and allaround orthopedic) specialist Dr. Mark Vann, MD says, “I can’t tell you how many times I examine a patient suffering from arthritis in the ankles and the x-ray reveals an old fracture. Car accidents, college sports injuries, and all those traumas in the past are top predictors of ankle arthritis in the future. We’ll typically try

A

anti-inflammatory medications and injections to alleviate symptoms, but when this fails… we have good news about the two primary surgical solutions for end stage ankle arthritis.” Stop the presses! This just in…arthroscopic surgery has revolutionized ankle fusion. Dr. Vann explains, “In ankle fusion, the joint is fused or welded together, limiting some of the up and down movement, in an effort to eliminate pain. This is one procedure we’re now able to perform as arthroscopic surgery with a smaller incision and reduced recovery time (compared to a standard fusion using large incisions). Patients who are younger, more active, and heavier benefit most from ankle fusion.” Looking for some in-depth coverage of total ankle replacement surgery? Dr. Vann says, “We’re seeing the second generation of total ankle replacements being implanted now, and the results seem promising. Using traditional open surgery the diseased ends of the tibia and talus (the major bones of the ankle joint) are replaced with a metal and plastic artificial joint for improved mobility. This procedure is best suited for patients who are older, lighter weight and less active.” You can trust Dr. Vann to stay on top of the latest scientific updates and the newest proven solutions to engineering problems of your ankle, foot and entire lower extremity. He says, “We’ll work together to find the best treatment plan for you!”

Memories That Shine Donnielle Carter

I

s it possible for jewelry to convey memories? Can you see the glimmer of times past reflected in the shine and twinkle of a ring or pendant? A time of laughter or a time of love? Everyone at Gold Connection Jewelers believes just that and their goal is to help you make memories that shine and last a lifetime. In 1994 Jane and her two daughters, Kerry and Kimberly, started Gold Connection Jewelers, “One daughter was into buying and one daughter was into repair. We started in a log cabin with 3 cases and a teensy amount of jewelry.” From word of mouth their business grew so much that within 1 year of opening they moved to their current location, which just happens to be next door to that original log cabin.

We started in a log cabin with 3 cases and a teensy amount of jewelry Today they have a wide selection of quality platinum, gold and sterling silver jewelry, wedding rings, watches, class rings and they even buy gold. They have developed a reputation for amazing custom designs by Kerry. Jane said, “Kerry has a great eye and really has a knack for how it’s going to look.” At Gold Connection Jewelers, you can get a piece of jewelry as unique as you or the person you’re giving it to. This family of jewelers knows that buying that perfect piece to express how you feel can be overwhelming and they will assist you

in every way. “We regard our customers as family and pledge to treat them with honesty, integrity, and respect.” Even customers who have moved from the area will ship their jewelry for repair to Gold Connection because they know they can trust the service they’ll get and that they’ll be treated like family. “My family has a lot of fun working together. Even my granddaughters will come in and help. They want to work here someday,” says a proud Jane. nce November rolls around, we all start carrying expanded “to-do” lists and it’s hard to grab a moment for yourself. Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. says, “Year-round I’ve seen how moms and dads put themselves last…but you owe it to yourself and your family to take good care of your teeth. And this time of year, even though things get a little crazy, you want to be sure to use up your dental benefits or health care spending accounts before they expire. Don’t worry, we’ll get you in and out and on your way before you know it!” One patient, Dana says, “I really appreciate the way Dr. Lomonte and his staff treat their patients. When you come in for an appointment, you don’t sit around and wait...he acknowledges that our time is just as important as his. A Family’s Needs Donnielle Carter

A

s a family grows and changes their needs change as well. Diapers give way to shopping sprees and crayons give way to car keys. This is also true for your family home. You want your family home to be comfortable so choosing flooring is hard enough but add kids and pets to the mix and the decision gets even more difficult. This is where the remarkable family of Bob & Renee McKelvey at All About Carpet and Floors can assist you. Not only do they have the expertise and training behind them they have also had a growing family with changing needs of their own. All About Carpets and Floors is a family owned and operated business and has been Sugar Land’s premiere destination for flooring, tiling, and remodeling for over 20 years. Whether your children are in diapers or active young adults, choosing flooring with your kids in mind doesn’t have to mean wall to wall cartoon-print carpet. There are several types of floors that are safe, attractive and comfortable that your kids will enjoy and that can handle the wear and tear of growing up. And when considering a pet friendly floor some things you want to consider are: does your pet shed a lot, will they track in mud or will their nails scratch the lacquer? Some flooring can withstand heavy foot traffic better than others; whether it is

baby’s first steps or a pet’s welcoming run. And the good news is that by selecting a family friendly floor now you can actually save money in the long run. And thankfully there is now a wide range of flooring materials so that with the assistance of All About Carpets and Floors experts, you can easily find one that fits your entire family’s needs and also fits within your budget. If it’s time to remodel, Bob has compiled an extensive network of expert and reputable trades people and contractors to assist you with any change you can dream of…and with Renee’s sense of style and eye for elegance she can help you fine-tune your tastes and desires so you have the home that will be comfortable for every member of your family. Bob and Renee of All About Carpets and Floors know the flooring needs of a growing family. They’ve experienced and continue to experience it themselves. They and their expertly trained staff including two sons, Shaun and Steven, can help you find the right flooring for any of your family’s needs. And because of this experience you can be assured of flooring with top quality and durability that can withstand the changing growing needs of your entire family. Janice Golden

I

f you’ve spent your whole life struggling with glasses or contacts, just imagine seeing the world clearly without them. What could change everything? Just a few minutes with Dr. Colby Stewart, MD, FACS of Houston Eye Associates. Robbie Galhorta and Janice Golden both agree, “Going to Dr. Stewart made the difference…and it’s the best decision we ever made!” “Trusting someone with your eyes is like trust-

ing them with your life,” says Robbie Galhorta. “I was so pleased with Dr. Stewart that I referred two friends and my mother to him for their LASIK procedures, too! During my no-cost consult he really checked my eyes to make sure I was a good candidate and answered all my questions. When I went in for my procedure he gave me a mild sedative and about thirty minutes later I went back to the operating table. I couldn’t have been on that table more than ten minutes…and there wasn’t any pain at all! I slept most of the day and when I woke up at 11pm, I could see clearly. I’ve been in glasses since I was about six years old, so this LASIK is hands-down the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. When you think of all the years you spend messing around with contact lenses, even just for a half an hour a day , it really adds up…and when you’ve got kids you need every extra minute you can get. I own a body shop (Galson Auto and Body) and now Dr. Stewart asks my advice about cars. He’s a solid, stand-up guy, who makes you feel like a peer, not just a patient!” “When we first met Dr. Stewart,” says Janice Golden, “my eighty-eight-year-old mother was legally blind in one eye, due to macular degeneration. At dinner after her surgery, she could read the menu for the first time in years. She convinced me to call Dr. Stewart up the next day. He’s really warm and personable and explains thing so clearly that it puts you right at ease. I decided to go with the ReSTOR lenses implant, the Rolls Royce of lenses. I’ve had terrible eyesight since I was a child. Since I’m farsighted, I wore contacts and had reading glasses, too. I hated running around

with leaky contact cases in my purse and messing with them late at night. Now I have total freedom…I just wish I’d done it earlier! The day of the procedure I went in and what seemed like five minutes later I was out again. It was so simple and I felt absolutely no pain. You get one eye done at a time…and the first night I could already read the street signs without my contacts. All the people in his office are warm and friendly, especially Yvette who answered so many questions for me. Now I’m trying to talk my forty-year-old daughter into getting the ReSTOR lenses. I told her, ‘Save up for this! As a teacher, you’ll think it’s the greatest!’” Ready to see what you’ve been missing? Have You Taken the VS

Classic Challenge? H

ow do you know if you prefer Pepsi or Coke? By taking a sip of each, right? You can’t judge something honestly unless you give it a chance and see for yourself. That’s true about all kinds of things in life from choosing a book to getting to know your neighbors. If you’re looking for a place where good people offer honest advice with absolutely no pressure, we’d like to invite you to come out and visit Classic Chevrolet. Have a cup of coffee, walk around, and see what we’re all about. If thinking about car dealerships and service centers makes you tense up, we challenge you to give us a try… because we think we do things differently! When you leave Classic Chevrolet we want you to look forward to coming back again. I agree with my General Sales Manager who said, “I really believe we’re the kind of dealership and service center that you’d feel confident sending your mom into…even if all she needs is a little air in her tires.” We love hearing ourselves described on comment cards as “honest and sincere,” “excellent, trustworthy,” “cool and calm, not pushy” “extra-friendly,” and “down-to-earth” and my favorite: “All car dealerships should be like Classic Chevy. My experience was outstanding. I’m a customer for life.” That’s the way we want you to feel every time you visit us! Have you ever asked your car dealer or service center how they support our community? In Classic Chevrolet’s first year of business we donated over $100,000 to charities and organizations like local schools, scouting troops, food banks, Child Advocates of Fort Bend,

ARC of Fort Bend, Impact a Hero, and the women’s shelter. We’re more than just an employer here…we’re members of this community and we want you to know you can count on us. Aren’t you tired of being on your guard every time you take your car in for service? Why should buying a car feel stressful? We’re ready to turn this challenge around on ourselves! Our motto is “Relax and Enjoy the Difference” for a reason and we pride ourselves on integrity, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. If you can’t imagine a different kind of experience, drop by Classic Chevrolet and challenge us to be everything we say we are. Our business is making people happy and we’ll always do right by you. At Classic Chevrolet, we’re not here to sell you just one car today…we want to be the place you send your friends and family for years to come. Come challenge us and see for yourself! Take the Advice of Thomas Jefferson

ot only did he write some inspiring thoughts about liberty, justice, and politics…but did you know it was Thomas Jefferson who said, “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today?” Dr. Purvi Parikh of A to Z Dental says, “Procrastination can make your life hectic…and it’s not good for your teeth either. At A to Z Dental, we think we have solutions for all the reasons people procrastinate about going to the dentist!” What’s the number one reason people procrastinate? It’s got to be fear! Dr. Parikh understands that many patients have had bad experiences in the past, and she takes extra care to put you at ease. Her patients love her gentle touch and soothing “chair side” manner. Even the most nervous find she keeps them calm and informed while she expertly works on their teeth. She says, “Biannual checkups are the best way for us to catch little problems before they have a chance to develop into major issues…and that makes your visits more pleasant, too!” Maybe you put off making appoint-

ments for yourself because you’re so busy with the kids. As a mother of three, Dr. Parikh understands! That’s why she offers “whole family appointments” at A to Z Dental. She says, “We treat all ages and we’re happy to schedule a block of time so that you and your kids can all get your teeth checked together. And if you need the services of a periodontist, I work with Dr. Omar Hakki. He has always stressed the importance of regular checkups for early detection of gum disease…we’re in complete agreement that procrastination isn’t good for the state of your smile!” Are you still stalling? Dr. Purvi Parikh has convenient weekend and late hours to accommodate students and busy professionals. That is one more reason to NOT procrastinate and call A To Z Dental. You can find the time to take care of your smile. Dr. Parikh says, “We accept all forms of insurance including Medicaid and CHIPS…and for those patients with dental benefits, medical spending accounts or flex spending accounts remember: procrastinating

now could cost you money! Some benefits don’t roll over, so don’t put it off till tomorrow…make your appointment today!” A to Z Dental 281-265-2869 1951 Lakeside Plaza, across from Super Target www.AtoZdental.net

An evening with friends, the anticipated birth of a child, two hands joining in marriage…Whether you’re having an intimate dinner party or a guest list of two hundred plus, wouldn’t you like the event to be memorable and create a little magic in your own personal history? Then come to Richmond Oaks, where you’ll have all the charm of a Southern mansion and none of the fuss. Preserving the best of the past, offering elegant accommodations that could rival a modern castle, this beautiful gem is nestled among centuries old oaks and heirloom pecan trees. Only one block off of Highway 90

on Richmond’s historic Morton Street, you can pull into the circle driveway and step back in time. Built at the end of the Gilded Age, this stately home is both practical and elegant. From its prominent water fountain in the circle drive, shaded porte-cochere out the back and remodeled kitchen for easy access to you and your caterers, Richmond Oaks is a perfect backdrop for any occasion. Imagine celebrating a 50th anniversary in a romantic setting built to stand the test of time. Rumor has it, Mrs. Farmer was so frightened by stories of the Great Storm in Galveston, she worried about living in their wooden framed house. Sensitive to his wife’s concerns, Mr. Farmer not only provided a roof over her head, he created a home worthy of the great-granddaughter of Jane Long. He built a home with fourteen inch thick walls and mortared beams, a grand structure that could withstand any storm. If you’re planning a wedding, a girlfriends retreat, a family reunion…these walls will welcome your guests and allow them to reflect on the meaningful moments that tie you together. This house, with its high ceilings and park-like setting represents all that you are celebrating and hoping for. It represents the test of time, storms overcome and a bright future.

Richmond Oaks is a great place for private parties for individuals, groups and corporations. Contact the Richmond Oaks Facility Coordinator to handle your event details. There is plenty of parking available and valet parking can be arranged. t’ s fall. The air is softening, the weather is turning cooler and the rituals are beginning. Amongst this month’ s rituals of turkey, family time and gifts there is also the ritual of getting ready for winter. You add warm blankets to your bed, you pull out the cold weather coats and get your house and family ready for the cool winter months ahead. How does it get any better than that? While the cooler weather is on its way, a lot of people are still struggling with allergies. And the air inside your house

The Sensible Path to Slim

When I started Dr. Jeffrey Alford’s Wellness program I was at two hundred and fifty pounds and suffering from a range of medical problems,” says James. “I tried all the typical weight loss plans…but when you don’t see results, it’s hard to stay motivated. My family doctor recommended I look into Dr. Alford’s program. When I went in, I told Dr. Alford I’d be happy if I could just lose between ten and thirty pounds…but now I’ve lost fifty pounds in six months and I’m halfway to my goal!” “This program replaces bad habits with good ones that will last. You eat anything you want, just watch your calories and record them. There’s no pre-packaged food or strict rules…and the supplements to help with cravings. At my weekly visits Dr. Alford and everyone on his staff are so friendly that it’s a pleasure to see them. I’ve been able to give up a bunch of my medications that I didn’t think it was possible for a guy like me in his sixties and I feel so much better!” Sharon, another fan of Dr. Alford’s Wellness program, says, “Over the last eleven years I’ve gained weight and suffered its impact on my health. Dr. Alford’s been my family doctor for over fifteen years. After I saw the poster for the Wellness Program in his office, I asked him about it. He explained that it was based on studies performed at University of Minnesota. He learned about it at an education course sponsored by the Texas Academy of Family physicians. My daughter-in-law is a physician who specializes in brain trauma rehabilitation. She checked Sharon

out the supplements for me and confirmed that they were absolutely safe and not appetite suppressants.” “Dr. Alford’s Wellness Program is smarter than the others I’ve tried. It brought home to me that I do need to keep a food diary… and now I’m down forty pounds and three pants sizes! When I dropped my keys in the car and leaned over to pick them up…I could see the car seat between my legs. I feel fantastic!” Dr. Jeffery Alford 281-494-4900 Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss 16651 SW Fwy #100 www.sugarlandwellness.net

Helping Your Child Shine

Sarah Warburton ne local mom had to pull her sons out of a much-loved preschool when it shut down, but she saw it as an opportunity for positive change. Ruby Chauhan-Wilby says, “This school had been a part of the community since 1985…so I decided to keep its spirit alive, while updating and completely renovating the building.” The

O

location will be the same, but everything else is shiny and new at Bright Scholars Academy. As a mom, Ruby knows firsthand what parents want for their kids. She says, “When I couldn’t find a school that offered everything I wanted, I decided to create one. We’ll offer healthy, hot food for healthy bodies, prepared

on-site in our new kitchen and extracurricular classes like art, computer, music, Spanish, Hindi, and ESL for healthy minds. We know parents are busy, so we’ll be open year round with extended before and after school hours with a Chess Club and other supervised activities. We’ll have transportation for after school care and we’re partnering with Kumon for interested students. I’m right there in the trenches, since my sons are both young…so I really relate to the things we parents need in a school.” As a qualified engineer, Ruby’s used to looking at a challenge and breaking it down into achievable goals…and she’ll use those organizational and goal-setting skills as the Bright Scholar Academy’s administrator. The large, naturally shaded playground received a facelift and features new equipment. The wellequipped and spacious classrooms have new ceilings, new floors, and new paint jobs with trim in cheerful primary colors… many of the teachers are veterans from the previous school and they’re all experienced and fully qualified. Ruby says, “I’ve seen how my oldest son bloomed and my youngest son struggled with the exact same curriculum. At Bright Scholars

Academy, we’ll assess each child so we can tailor our approach to the individual student. Confident kids will reach for the stars.” Give your little scholar a bright future with a strong start at Bright Scholars Academy. Ruby says, “A happy and stimulating preschool experience is the best foundation for a lifetime of enthusiastic learning. Are You in Pain? Sarah Warburton When I reinjured my back, pain medication didn’t help” says one local accountant, Dan Martinez of Dan Martinez and Associates. “ I stayed in bed for a couple of weeks and then I worked lying on the loveseat in my office. At Sugar Land Spine and Disc, Dr. Michele Miller took one look at me and ordered an MRI that showed a herniated disc. She recommended twenty sessions on the Lordex Decompression System and I thought, ‘ Why not? I’ ll try anything!’ ”

After a few sessions, Dan still hurt so bad a surgeon scheduled him for back surgery.

He says, “I kept up with my Lordex sessions and one week before my surgery, I got up with absolutely no pain. I got better and better, so I cancelled surgery and never looked back! My wife started having pain six years after her back surgery, so I recommended the Lordex. Now we both go once a month and we’ re totally pain-free. I’ m even playing golf again!” “I used to go to my husband’ s softball games,” says Faith Guerrero, “ and sit with a softball against my back, trying to find relief…I even tried sleeping on one. For seven years I’d been living with that pain and it kept getting worse. I’ m expecting a grandbaby this December and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to pick the baby up…I knew at forty- nine I was too young to have a back this bad! I came to Sugar Land Spine and Disc and Dr. Stacy suggested decompression.” That was the end of June…and by October Faith was completely pain-free! She says, “My pain was at a constant 9 and I would have been happy with a 3 or even a 4…I had no idea it would go down to zero. The Lordex creates a slight vacuum to open up the spaces between

discs so your body can heal…it’s non-invasive. You do a half an hour on the machine and then a half an hour of exercises to build the weak muscles around your spine. You don’t have to wait until you’re desperate. Go to Sugar Land Spine and Disc and try the Lordex…it was a miracle for me!” Sugar Land Spine and Disc 281-491-DISC (3472) 54 Sugar Creek Center Blvd. Ste. 110 www.SugarLandSpineandDisc.com

nock knock - sometimes that’s the beginning of a joke. Knock knock - sometimes that’s the friend at the door that you’ve been waiting for. Is your Gas Furnace Safe? Safety is a Phone Call Away

Karen Daniels ooler weather is finally coming our way and All-Out A/C and Heating wants you to remember to have your heater checked before you turn it on. It’s a scary topic, but carbon monoxide poisoning can occur when there’s a crack in the heater exchanger. And the number one reason for heat exchanger failure is age, but sometimes rust, mechanical defects, and lack of airflow can also cause the failure. Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, and virtually undetectable to the human senses, so you need the professionals at All-Out to certify that your heater is ready for the winter season. Bryan explains, “Energy efficient air-conditioners and heaters really do pay for themselves over time.” You see, heat exchangers are subjected to a temperature rise of about 900 degrees in a matter of minutes. This rapid increase in temperature subjects the metal in the box to expand and contract. This makes the heat exchanger brittle and eventually the metal of the heat exchanger cracks.

Got Grandma’s Feet? L Sarah Warburton

adies, are you on the go from the minute your feet hit the floor until long after the sun goes down? Are your feet starting to look like your grandma’s? If foot pain is slowing you down, stop for a minute and make an appointment that will help you pick up the pace again. Dr. Marco Vargas of Foot and Ankle Associates offers all the latest innovations to keep your feet happy, healthy, and on the move! Could the pain in your toes have something to do with the shape of your favorite super-cute shoes? “Maybe,” says Dr. Vargas. “Tight, closed toed shoes produce the ideal conditions for developing nail fungus. Those same shoes can also cause toe pain and ingrown nails when the fungal nails get thick” While no treatment is 100% guaranteed to eliminate nail fungus, Dr. Vargas now offers the Cool Breeze laser in his office to treat nail fungus which usually eliminates the problem with just one single, painless 30 minute treatment. However, if your condition requires additional treatments, Dr. Vargas will re-treat at no additional cost until the fungus is gone. For your convenience they offer several easy ways to pay including payment plans and no interest financing! Whether you blame it on genetics or ill-fitting shoes, bunions are a real pain in the foot! Moms can’t afford to miss out on the holiday rush, but luckily Dr. Vargas has a range of solutions! He says, “We’ve recently started offering a different kind of bunion procedure using a ‘tightrope’ device that significantly reduces post op pain and shortens the time before getting back into shoes. It does not require cutting and shifting the bone as is commonly done and it eliminates some of the risks associated with other procedures such as delayed bone healing and painful hardware. While this particular bunion procedure is not for everyone, it is an option available for patients with a mild deformity.” We women can’t let foot pain break our stride. re you looking for a great place for lunch or dinner? You know that special place with genuine atmosphere and friendly, personal service. Well look no more. Ditch the chain restaurants, load up the car and head to our county seat where Sandy McGee’s is serving up fresh, local and legendary food. Located just one block off Highway 90 on Morton Street in Historic Downtown Richmond, this local favorite serves up delicious down-home food with a gourmet twist. Sandy credits her success to God first, loyal employees like Robert (some call him the Ambassador) and great friends like Cindy Newlin and her husband. After long hours of helping create the Library within the restaurant, it was Cindy who said, “You’re a destination, not just a location!” Whether you’re enjoying dinner or lunch, take Sandy’s advice, “Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.” There has been more than one diner who knew what they wanted for dessert long before they ordered their meal. The Coconut Cream Pie is so good that patrons weep from the sheer joy of it. And some people have heard a chorus of angels when biting into the Apple Walnut Cobbler, not to mention the Mexican Fudge Cake. Don’t take our word for it. After 25 years of maintaining a reputation as the freshest restaurant in Fort Bend County, Sandy’s award-winning chicken salad and broccoli cheese soup has made her a legend. You Have Nothing To Lose…Except Fat! Sarah Warburton ired of fighting a losing battle with your waist & weight? Hope is just around the corner…at the Amaya Clinic in Sugar Land. Dr. Anoop Chaturvedi, the CEO of Erchonia Asia International, Advisor of World Society of Antiaging Medicine, and Founder of World Antiaging Network says, “The obesity epidemic continues unabated. Now I’m excited to announce a new way to combat it. The recently approved Zerona body-contouring laser fits in perfectly with my philosophy of offering solutions for wellness that really work…and depend on maintaining a healthy life style rather than a quick fix.” If you want to fight a world-wide epidemic like obesity, you need a global solution. Erchonia, the global leader in low-level healthcare lasers recently launched the Zerona body-contouring laser in South East Asia’s SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation). This announcement coincides with the U.S. FDA-approval

of the Zerona Laser, a non-invasive, painless treatment that guarantees the removal of fat. Erchonia Asia will market and sell Zerona throughout the region. “We are certain

only device on the market tested successfully in a double-blind, multi-site, placebo controlled study, and is the only non-invasive procedure that guarantees an average of three inches lost in as little as two weeks.” Now you can take advantage of this winning solution right here in Sugar Land. The Zerona is the first non-invasive aesthetic device to receive FDA market clearance in the U.S. for reduction of the waist, hips, and thighs …without anesthesia, incisions, or needles! Dr. Anoop explains, “Unlike high-power or high-heat lasers, Zerona lowlevel cold laser creates a pore in the fat cell membrane releasing the fat which is transported by lymphatics and eliminated by natural detoxification process. Zerona is the first painless body contouring procedure to effectively remove excess fat…without harming the fat cell. That makes the Zerona procedure painless, with no downtime and no negative side effects.” Losing waist & weight with the Zerona procedure goes hand in hand with living a healthy lifestyle. Since the procedure has so little downtime, patients can remain active while undergoing their course of 6 to 9 treatments…one forty-minute treatment every other day for 2 to 3 weeks. Dr. Anoop says, “Studies have shown that Zerona increases sensitivity to the satiety-hormone Leptin which is produced by fat cells. This decreases patients’ appetite, helping them modify their diet and portion sizes. Looking at the big picture allows a Zerona certified specialist to consider an individual as a whole …so that you’ll make changes that will keep you feeling better and looking younger for the long term.” “In addition to weight loss and waist loss, Amaya Clinics internationally offer a variety of natural solutions for wellness and antiaging like Natural Bioidentical hormones for men and women, HCG Diet, Lipotropic injections, neurotransmitter testing, nutritional analysis and counseling for complete and inclusive health. Amaya Clinic wants you to feel fantastic with these fabulous offers: Pay $2500 once and get Free Zerona for a whole year or you can pay $111 for each Zerona session and receive a Lipo B injection value $30 absolutely Free.” 281-751-8192 1327 Lake Pointe Parkway Suite # 301 Sugar Land Medical Plaza, Sugar Land, TX 77478
