hether you are a professional athlete, junior gymnast, varsity football player or senior bowler, a sportsrelated injury doesn’t have to mean a major change in your lifestyle. An experienced, skilled sports medicine physician can make all the difference between a quick return to your favorite activity … or a long process that involves multiple office visits, referrals and recommendations. In Fort Bend County, the MOST talented sports medicine team with the MOST to offer is Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas (MOST), one of the largest groups of board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in the area. The MOST team offers the highest level of experience, the latest techniques and technology, and the convenience of easily accessible local facilities. It’s the MOST complete orthopedic care available – including arthroscopic surgery, total joint replacements, cartilage transplants, diseases and deformities of the spine and treatment of hand, upper extremity, and foot and ankle problems. 2 ~ UPCLOSE ~ September 2010

Mark W. Maffet, M.D. Sports Medicine

The newest member of the MOST team, Dr. Mark W. Maffet, says MOST has everything needed to return athletes to their sport quickly. “We have access to a comprehensive physical therapy facility with occupational and aquatic therapy, as well as the area’s most advanced diagnostic equipment, including the most powerful MRI machines available, thanks to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital,” he says. “I truly enjoy being part of this amazing team.” “We take pleasure working with the schools in Fort Bend County and Alief areas,” said Dr. Vincent Phan, orthopedic surgeon and team physician. “I grew up here and went to Elsik High School, so it’s an honor to support the players at these schools that I know so well. We look forward to continuing to support local school districts, as we have for the last 16 years.” MOST doctors serve as team physicians and offer annual sports physicals for Fort Bend and Alief independent school districts’ middle school and high school athletes. The doctors at MOST donate their time, their expertise, and more. For example, MOST has generously donated more

MOST than $95,000 in proceeds that are generated from the physical examinations back to local schools for rehab, protective, and other equipment, such as Under Armour game shirts for student trainers, braces for the athletes, and plaques for the team. “Partnering with MOST has allowed me to obtain better rehab equipment for students who get hurt on the field,” said June Tomlin, trainer at Elkins High School. Randy Cunningham, head coach at Travis High School, says the MOST physicians give his coaching staff a sense of confidence. “We know that our athletes are in good hands at MOST and are receiving the care they need and deserve,” he says. MOST physicians also go the extra mile for local athletes, staffing a Saturday morning sports medicine clinic at the MOST offices on 1201 Brooks Street in Sugar Land during the busy fall season. The clinic, which is open from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. from Aug. 21 through Nov. 13, enables athletes to see a sports medicine physician for diagnosis – not a nurse or athletic trainer – before the weekend ends.

Vincent C. Phan, M.D. Hand & Upper Extremeties

“When I was a college athlete,” says Dr. Sitter, “I really appreciated the doctors and trainers who supported me. Now, as a doctor of sports medicine myself, I have a special understanding of the needs of athletes. Our goal at Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas is always to return athletes of any age to an active life as quickly—and safely—as possible.” From the field to the pitch to the court to the pool…it’s the MOST complete orthopedic care available – from neck to toe! hris Jenkins of Bandade Animal Rescue spends a significant portion of her life running. Whether it’s going for an evening run with her husband or running out of a car to rescue an abandoned animal, Chris counts on her ability to move and move quickly. Having dealt with severe medical conditions before, she knew better than to dismiss the enlarged varicose vein on the back of her knee as simply an unsightly bump. “I was afraid that it would start to hurt and then affect my ability to run.” A nurse she had previously worked with suggested she see Dr. Baltazar of Sugar Land Vein Specialists and get a free consultation for varicose vein treatment. Dr. Baltazar is certified by the American Board of Surgery in both General and Vascular Surgery and specializes in varicose veins, so she felt confident in making the appointment. Dr. Baltazar maintains, “Although vascular surgery is a wide field, our focus is to treat only varicose veins, and offer the best treatment in Sugar Land.” From the first warm hello from Sabrina at the reception desk through the entire procedure, Chris felt very safe and welcome. “Dr. Baltazar and his staff are very professional, personable and they make you feel like a friend.”

Before

During Chris’ first visit, Dr. Baltazar used an ultrasound machine to examine the varicose vein on the back of her knee and together they decided how to proceed. “The actual procedure was very painless and Dr. Baltazar was amazing. He was continually telling me what was going to happen before he did it. It took the fear out the situation.” Her recovery was quick and she was back to running within a matter of days. “I no longer fear being on my feet all day, worry about running or that my bump would start to hurt and cause problems. I just feel…better.” Varicose veins are more than just unpleasant or unattractive bumps in the skin. They are an indication of improper blood flow which can lead to some serious health issues. The good news is we have Sugar Land Vein Specialists and Dr. Baltazar right in our town. Chris declares “I’m so impressed with Dr. Baltazar’s knowledge and kindness I would go to him for any procedure.” The treatment of varicose veins is covered by most insurance so call Sugar Land Vein Specialists today; they offer free vein screenings by appointments. I Never Dreamed I’d Look This Way Again Becca Bragg ave you ever felt that your body’s best days are behind you? Hope could be just around the corner! One woman told us, “I’ve been extremely physical all my life, but even with karate and aerobics and dieting I’d lose forty pounds and it would come back again. I have a stressful job, and between that and the years I developed a stomach that nothing budged. I started researching my options and I happened to see Dr. A. Ahmadi’s interview on television.” What caught her attention? She says, “I was absolutely captivated by his clear, calm explanation and the fact that he’d developed the Lipotuck™, something really smooth and natural…and different from the standard tummy-tuck. I carried his information around in my purse for

months. Then I realized nothing would change unless I took action. I picked up the phone and talked to his wonderful staff…actually several times before making an appointment. They gave me all the time and reassurance I needed.” “I saw my own body type in the beforeand-after photo book in Dr. Ahmadi’s office. I knew if the women in them came out looking fantastic, this procedure could work for me. At our consultation Dr. Ahmadi impressed me with his empathy and his sweetness. He explained every detail and when I went through the procedure everything happened just the way he said it would. He’s an unbelievably amazing doctor with an incredible staff.” “A few months have gone by and every morning I’m still in awe when I see myself. I never dreamed I’d have a defined waist and a flat stomach again. My blood pressure is lower, I’ve gone down three dress sizes, and I can wear fitted styles without feeling selfconscious. For years I’d talked about doing this. I’m so glad I didn’t waste any more time sitting around wishing for a change. I feel fantastic…and it’s

Sometimes the Answer is Easy

M

cleod Shatterfield found out in college that she had polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and it might have repercussions for her fertility. She says, “I also have thyroid problems, and a doctor told me I have a heart-shaped uterus. I assumed that getting pregnant would be a long process for me. When I got married, my husband Jason and I both wanted a bunch of kids…but after two years of trying on our own, we’d had no success. We decided to do some research, so we’d be prepared. My husband’s boss’s wife had been to Dr. Chauhan and she strongly recommended him to us.” Mcleod walked into Dr. Subodh Chauhan’s office with the Fertility Specialists of Houston, looking for answers and encouragement…and Dr. Chauhan delivered both! Mcleod says, “He gave me a complete work-up with plenty of tests, put me back on my thyroid medication, and told me to come back once Jason and I decided we were ready to start. I never felt any pressure just a lot of support and encouragement and complete confidence. He was so warm, kind and helpful. After an HSG test confirmed that there weren’t any problems with my uterus, Jason and

‘We’ll start on the lowest dose of Clomid, and we can bring it up, if we need to, later.’ After the first month I came back in for my checkup…and I was pregnant!” After Mcleod recovered from her shock, she was over-the-moon with excitement. She says, “We’d been nervous about seeing a fertility specialist because you read so many stories about how hard (and expensive) the process can be, but we’re proof that sometimes the problem is simple and can be treated simply, especially if you have the assistance of an accomplished fertility expert. Everyone at his office was thrilled to give us the good news. Dr. Chauhan had a great big smile on his face when he said, ‘You’re the third one today.’ Don’t be afraid to call Dr. Chauhan. He’ll start with the easiest options first…and sometimes that’s all it takes!”

I decided we would go back to Dr. Chauhan. I was really worried it would be a long-term, invasive process…but that’s not Dr. Chauhan’s style. He explained,

ver the past few years, click2Houston’s investigative reporter, Amy Davis, has done story after story on drivers who suffered a car accident, had their car towed, and then got slammed with a huge bill from an unfamiliar body shop. Even in the aftershock of an accident, it’s important to remember…you always have the right to demand your car be towed to a place you trust. At Classic Chevrolet, every department from sales to service to the body shop operates with honesty, transparency, and dedication to your satisfaction. Body shop manager Mike Gnader says, “We pride ourselves on building long term relationships with our customers, and we’re always looking out for you.” After the shock of a car crash, you need a place that’s going to ease your stress… not add to it! Classic Chevrolet offers free shuttle service, so you’re not stuck calling around to find a ride. Mike says, “We’ll take you home after you drop your car off and we’ll pick you up when your car

is ready. Our repairs come with a limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own the car, and we take the time to walk you through every step of the process. If your car’s been in an accident, you’ve had enough unpleasantness. We pledge to do our part to make your day a little bit better by treating you with the care and respect you deserve!” Hopefully, you’ll only have one wreck in your lifetime…but the excellent service you’ll receive at Classic Chevrolet will keep you coming back for years! When you bring your car to Classic Chevrolet, you’re choosing a family-owned, local company that’s in our community for the long haul. They even use a “green” waterborn paint repair system that’s gentler on the environment. Mike says, “We’re always conscious that the cars we’re working on belong to our friends and neighbors. Through every step of the process— estimate, repair, and follow-up—we work for you and you alone…and we’d like to

earn your loyalty for life!” Why wait until you’ve had an accident to decide on the best body shop for your car? fourteen years. When you choose a local team with that kind of history, you’ll know they’ve got the know-how to get the job done right the first time. Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter says, “You’ll always get the

best service at a fair price from us, because we believe in treating people right!” If you want to win the game, you’ve got to put in the training! Alan earned his Master Plumber certification through hours of work as a journeyman and a strenuous two-day master’s license exam. Along with his brothers Brian and Chris and his sons— Beau, Luke, and Jake—he’s made a name for Alan’s Plumbing based on honesty, quality workmanship, and real down-home values. He says, “Now that Beau’s graduated, he’s on the team full time with me and his uncles. Luke’s back at college and Jake’s a junior at Elkins…and lined up to play quarterback on the football team. Go Knights!” Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. If you’ve got a little leak like a dripping faucet or a running toilet, it’s like money from your water bill is going down the drain. Call Alan’s Plumbing and they’ll show up in uniform, on time, and do the job right. Taking care of little problems keeps them from turning into major inconveniences down the line. And choosing a local team means you’ll get the straight story, excellent service, and a fair price.

Alan says, “We’re always happy to run interference between you and your plumbing. We know money’s tight, but it doesn’t pay to wait while a leak runs up your water bill or becomes bigger and causes some serious water damage.” You’ll always get the straight story and a fair shake from Alan’s Plumbing…season after season. Alan says, “If your hot water heater’s over ten years old and making lots of noise, give us a call. We can hook you up with a top-quality self-cleaning Rheem hot water heater, with a new pan and new connections that’ll take care of you for another decade. Eyes on the Prize Sarah Warburton etting the winning edge in any sport—from soccer to football to tennis to gymnastics—takes dedication and preparation. After you’ve gotten a pre-season physical from your physician, make sure your eyes bring their A-game this year with a trip to Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source. She’ll check how clearly you see, how well your eyes work together, and recommend the ideal eyewear to enhance your vision and protect your eyes. Are your eyes good team players? Athletes of every age need these MVPs. Dr. Doan’s an avid runner who often trains for marathons and her kids play soccer and volleyball. She says, “Every sport presents its own vision challenges. After a thorough exam and a discussion of your lifestyle, I’ll be able to advise you on the best solutions to sharpen your sight, reduce glare, and enhance your range of vision…so you can perform with the best sight possible!” You’ve invested in kneepads and mouth

guards to protect your kids on the field, but what about those precious peepers? Dr. Doan says, “600,000 sports-related eye injuries occur in the U.S. each year and more than 90% of these injuries could be prevented with appropriate protective eyewear. Not only do ordinary glasses or sunglasses fail to protect the eye from injury, they can actually cause more damage if they are shattered.” An elbow, a stick, a bat, a cleat or a ball can penetrate the eye, causing sight-threatening damage. Suit your kids up all the way to their eyes. Dr. Doan can help you choose from protective sportswear with prescription lenses…or without if you wear contact lenses or don’t need vision correction. And don’t forget the best defense–UVA/UVB protection! Sports goggles can be treated to offer sun protection and polarization to reduce glare on cloudy days…for protection from the dangerous rays of the sun and an advantage on the field! Whether you’re a cyclist, a cheerleader, a hunter or a football player, get your eyes ready for another winning season by making it your goal to visit Dr. Doan. How Much is Too Much? Sarah Warburton t that time of the month, everything can feel like “too much.” But when it comes to your flow, there’s a difference between heavy and abnormal. We asked Dr. Leslie Cohan of The Woman’s Place how to tell if your period is too heavy…and what you can do about it. Do you have to double-up protection? Do you change them more than every two hours…or have a change of clothes on hand “just in case?” Does your period last longer than seven days or include blood clots larger than a nickel? Does excessive bleeding make you miss work, avoid traveling, or affect your social, athletic or sexual activities? Dr. Cohan says, “We’ll consider these questions as well as your family history to determine if you have excessively heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia). If your period keeps you from enjoying your life, we have options to give you relief.” Sometimes a heavy cycle is actually your body’s sign that something else is wrong. Dr. Cohan says, “The most common causes of heavy menstrual bleeding are uterine fibroid (non-cancerous) tumors, a hormonal imbalance, cervical polyps,

A

endometrial polyps, pelvic inflammatory disease, and use of an IUD for birth control. More serious causes include lupus, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, or bleeding disorders like von Willebrand Disease. Once we get to the root of the problem, we can make the best decision for your overall health.” Getting the right treatment can give you your life back. Dr. Cohan says, “Sometimes the answer is as simple as birth control pills or an IUD device like the Mirena IUD, a progesterone-based birth control. Women who don’t plan to have children in the future may choose a global endometrial ablation. This technique uses heat to lighten heavy bleeding and takes less than ten minutes. Both endometrial ablation and the Mirena IUD may reduce bleeding by forty to seventy percent or more. In some instances, a hysterectomy may be the answer. New laparoscopic techniques allow us to perform the procedure through an incision just the size of a dime and reduce recover time to two weeks.” Don’t suffer in silence through the embarrassment and inconvenience of excessively heavy periods. Dr. Cohan says,

Young Doctor with Old Philosophy Karen Daniels hat’s the great thing about being a doctor—you’re considered young well into your forties. And though experience counts, it’s nice to find a doctor with a bedside manner that existed when doctors still made house calls; the kind of doctor that still takes the time to sit with you and listen. This is how Martha Red describes Dr. Manoj Bhardwaj of Internist Associates of Houston. “Growing up, both my father and my grandfather were physicians. With Dr. Bhardwaj I was reminded of their solid principles and calm wisdom during my first visit.” In order to be closer to family, Martha moved from Austin back to her hometown of Houston, and needed a general physician. After locating a gynecologist in town, she asked for a referral, and Dr. Bhardwaj came highly recommended. “I found him to be competent, thorough, and just plain wonderful. He spent time with me and really listened to

T

what was going on.” Martha has since recommended Dr. Bhardwaj to her friend who in turn recommended the doctor to her husband. And because she has come to trust Dr. Bhardwaj so much, whenever she needs a recommendation for a different doctor, such as a dermatologist or podiatrist, he is the only one she’ll ask. Great news for Fort Bend residents…Dr. Bhardwaj is now practicing at The Woman’s Place of Sugar Land located near First Colony Mall. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Bhardwaj went on to complete his residency in family medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and a residency in internal medicine at WeilCornell Methodist Hospital. He has also completed internships in pediatrics, dermatology, general medicine, general surgery, OB/ GYN, and anesthesiology. Dr. Bhardwaj is certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Board

of Internal Medicine. If you have a question, he will have an answer. Martha has settled in since her move, she plans on staying and retiring in Houston where she can continue with her passion of painting and drawing. She says, “I like that Dr. Bhardwaj is young, this way I know he’ll be around for a long time because I plan on keeping him.” Internist Associates of Houston 713-797-9933 16552 Southwest Freeway At The Woman’s Place Sugar Land, TX 77378 www.internistassociates.com

Secrets of Successful Students Sarah Warburton hat sets a successful student apart from the pack? The ability to prioritize, set goals, take responsibility, and the drive to find better ways to learn. Successful students in our area have discovered a secret that makes all these things easier, a secret that gives them an edge in school and in life—the Turning Point Academy (TPA). Co-founder, Carol Appelbaum says, “At the Turning Point Academy students benefit from a philosophy of education that sets them up for success!” You don’t have to settle for the status quo. Carol says, “Everyone’s frustrated by our current educational crisis. Take a look at these statistics: 1/3 of seventeen-yearolds couldn’t place France on a world map, only 20% of eighth-graders are on the right track for college (Chicago Tribune), 28% of high school seniors can’t read, 38% can’t do simple math, 90% can’t write a coherent paragraph, almost 90% are not ready for college, and 60% of entering freshman will not

graduate college in four years and up to 56% of students who enroll in college will not graduate within 6 years of their enrollment (USA Today). At TPA, we pride ourselves in bucking these trends and working with students and their families with proven techniques that deliver real results!” When you know what you want, why wait to go after it? You shouldn’t hold off until eleventh grade to start working on your plan for college. Carol says, “We believe successful students start early… and it’s never too early to think about life after high school. Our students don’t complete a subject until they’ve mastered the material and earned an ‘A,’ they learn time management, goal-setting, and study techniques. They begin taking the PSAT, ACT, and SAT as early as 6th grade. We give our students the tools, the support, the environment, and the experience they need to succeed.” Along with their regular enrollment, TPA offers 3 ways to give your teenager a leg up

on college and life. They have free monthly webinars to help students grades 6 – 9 start to prepare for the SAT/ACT process (parents are welcome). Periodically they offer a hands-on SAT/ ACT prep course and once a month after school, there is the Teen Success Course that teaches strategies that will assist them to reach their full potential. atmosphere, exacting craftsmanship, and beautiful smiles! He says, “No two patients are alike and no two smiles should be alike. When crafting a crown or bridge, it’s especially important to pay attention to the way the final product blends with a patient’s existing teeth. Even with a relatively simple procedure like whitening, some patients prefer a dazzling smile, others like a softer white. I had one patient request a ‘tooth tattoo’ on his new crown. I was able to make him a custom crown that’s completely unique. Once I know what you want, we’ll work together to create it. I want you to love showing the world your smile!” Every artist has a unique vision and no two dentists have the same “eye” for the art and craft of dentistry. Dr. Lomonte says, “Whether I’m making adjustments to your smile with Invisalign or crafting a crown or bridge, I enjoy the artistry of this profession. Art and science have really come together in the field of dentistry...so now I can give people strong, healthy smiles that really let their personality shine through.”

A Working Mom’s Tips for Working Moms-to-be Sarah Warburton oms-to-be have thousands of questions…like whether to keep working through their pregnancy. Local working mom Dr. Reena Tharappel-Jacob, M.D. of Obstetrical and Gynecological Associates knows how you feel. She says, “We understand you have all kinds of anxieties and we’re here for you. Even though we’re a group practice, when my patients call they speak to me or my nurse, Sonia. She’s developed quite a fan base…but I’m also available any time you need me.” If you’d like to work through your pregnancy, Dr. Jacob will consider your general health, how well the pregnancy is going, and any problems you’ve had with previous pregnancies. Other factors will certainly include what your job involves, how physically demanding it is, and how many hours you work. Planning ahead can make things easier on you and your unborn child. Dr. Jacob says, “Sometimes morning sickness is made worse by low blood sugar. If you eat three meals and pack two healthy snacks—like popcorn, peanut butter and crackers, cheese, hardboiled eggs, and fruit—you’ll have more energy. Lots of my patients invest in a lunch box or small cooler, so they’ll have energy-packed snacks and cool water all day at work.” Preparing for a new baby’s like training for a marathon…you have to get in shape! Dr. Jacob says, “Stockpile your sleep…ten or eleven hours per night is ideal. Moderate exercise reduces the possibility of blood clots, varicose veins, and swelling of the

feet and legs. Avoid smoking or second-hand smoke and give us a call before taking any medications –even over the counter or herbal ones.” You’ll love the warm, intimate feel of this boutique-style clinic. Dr. Jacob says, “My nurse Sonia and I love talking with our patients. You’ll have our total support on your journey to a happy, healthy baby. The Inner Strength of Women

Sarah Warburton ou may already be aware that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but why wait? Gail Burleson, R.T. of Mammography and Ultrasound Specialists has made getting your mammogram convenient and comfortable…any time of year! She says, “Lots of our patients come in with a buddy or even a group of girlfriends. A typical mammogram with us takes twenty minutes, so after they’re done they go out to lunch or to get a manicure as a treat. We’re big believers here of making taking care of your health a treat!” We asked Gail to walk us through the ABC’s of mammograms… from when to get your first, to what she most commonly finds. She says, “Even though the guidelines are always being revised, most doctors currently recommend getting a baseline mammogram at age 35. This is the image against which your future mammograms will be measured for changes. At age 40, it’s time to begin annual mammograms. If your mother, sister, aunt or other family member was diagnosed at an early age with breast cancer, we recommend starting your mammograms ten years earlier. We might use an ultrasound for a patient with extremely dense breasts, but an annual mammogram is still the best way to detect breast cancer.” Not every lump is the worst case scenario. Gail says, “The most common non-cancerous lumps we find are benign cysts and solid Fibroadenoma. We may also find benign calcifica-

Y

tions, and malignant calcifications. Our technicians are highly trained and are happy to talk with you about every step of the process. Your doctor will get your results and decide whether you need a biopsy. Some of the newest breast cancers like inflammatory carcinoma are very aggressive, so I can’t stress enough the importance of getting an annual mammogram to catch any problems early.” Now that the kids are back in school, grab a few girlfriends and get a jump on Breast Cancer Awareness month with mammograms at Mammography and Ultrasound Specialists. Gail says, “Self-refer to us for a routine mammogram screening or bring your doctor’s orders (especially if you suspect a problem). We work with most major insurance companies…and have great self-pay prices, too!” Easy in, easy out, easy to take care of your health! hen Brian and Jean Buchanan dreamt about making some changes to their home they wanted to make it turnkey and as easy as possible. After talking with several carpet and floor companies, they confidently turned to Bob and Renee at All About Carpet and Floors, Sugar Land’s premier resource for flooring and remodeling. Brian walked into All About Carpet and Floors warm and welcoming showroom full of questions. He wanted to update the majority of the floors in his home and remodel a few areas. After speaking with All About Carpet’s owners Bob and Renee and two other in-store technicians, Brian had a plan of action and the remodeling adventure began. Brian said that he didn’t feel rushed to make a decision or that Bob was trying to sell them. “I felt really comfortable with everyone. I felt like Bob was trying to provide a solution that would help give us what we really wanted.” As a matter of fact, All About Carpet let Brian and Jean take home a box of the tile they had chosen so that they could lay it out and make sure it was what they wanted before making a final decision. With a team in place, the work on Brian’s house began. The tile crew from All About Carpet did an excellent job. Brian mentioned that he felt good about having them in his home, “They were fastidious and took quite some time. It was obvious they knew what they were doing. They planned ahead of time before they started. The tile came out even and symmetrical, not thin slivers on one side like they had run out of space.” Once the work began Bobs involvement did not end at the showroom. He stopped by the job site many times to check on progress and make sure things were on schedule and meeting All About Carpet’s high standards. Bob was the one that noticed that there was a small flaw with the new backsplash in the kitchen and insisted that it be changed out immediately.

Overall Brian said that he really enjoyed working with the folks at All About Carpet and Floors, “They were very pleasant to deal with on a personal and professional basis and we would highly recommend them. We’re quite happy with how all of the remodeling turned out.” Continually exceeding customer’s expectations and assisting Sugar Land residents in creating their dream homes for over 20 years, All About Carpet and Floors is a company to be trusted. In the words of very satisfied customer Brian, “I felt that they have been here so they will be here and there must be a reason for that.” Stop by the showroom anytime MondaySaturday 10:00am-6:00pm and see how your dream home can become a reality. What a Winning Smile!

Sarah Warburton ow many dentists are there between Sienna Plantation and Sugar Land? Christie Lawler doesn’t know, because she drives straight to EcoDental every time. She says, “I actually walked into EcoDental because I was selling advertising…but I ended up getting sold on Dr. Nguyen! When I came in, everyone was so friendly. They gave me a tour and told me all about their eco-friendly concept. I loved the idea of a ‘green’ dentist, and when I saw the massaging dental chair I told them I was coming back for my checkup!” For almost ten years, Christie had needed a crown, but she couldn’t find the right dentist. She says, “Everything seemed so expensive…even with my dental insurance. Dr. Nguyen quoted me a price that was considerably less than anyone else. He also laid out the options and let me choose

what I wanted for myself. Since it’s a back molar, I decided on gold, since it’s more durable than porcelain and won’t be visible. Dr. Nguyen would never push the most expensive option, because he really puts his patients first. I really appreciate the way Dr. Nguyen explained everything to me. He really cared about what I wanted and took the time to listen to my concerns. I have two porcelain crowns already, and I can’t even chew with one of them. The one Dr. Nguyen had made for me is much better crafted and extremely comfortable. He does expert work…and he treats his patients right.” “Over the years, I’ve had some experiences that make it hard for me to trust a dentist, but Dr. Nguyen earned my loyalty through his honesty, skill, and caring attitude. Do you know he doesn’t feel comfortable charging to make his patients comfortable, so there’s no extra fee for nitrous at his office? I have lots of sensitivity with my crowns and every few months he treats my teeth with a solution to reduce that sensitivity… because I asked for it. Everyone in that office— Dr. Nguyen, Kristy,Cindy, Gina, and Natalie the assistant—just want to make me (and all their patients) happy. I love that feeling!”

or ten years, Mark Knodel’s father was head basketball coach at Rice University and from the age of five Mark grew up in Houston watching his father’s every move. He says, “Even though I went into investments instead of sports, my father’s lessons are invaluable. The financial events of 2000 were what he called a ‘game changer’ and it was time for investors everywhere to replace the old strategy of ‘diversify, buy and hold.’ At The Noble Group, we’ve got a game plan to help you grow your money in a strong market and help protect your assets in a weak market.” In sports and life you have to think on your feet. Mark says, “Since 2000, not enough financial advisors have changed from their strategy of ‘diversify, buy and hold.’ When account values started to fall, investors got worried and picked up the phone. The advice they got was ‘just hold on, the market always recovers over time.’ Before long account values lost forty percent or more and nothing was done to protect their principal. That’s no way to win the game. The days of ‘buy and hold’ are over. At The Noble Group, we take pride in helping to protect your assets…while we help grow your money.” How much time do you have before the buzzer sounds on your retirement? Over the course of your lifetime, markets may go up and down…but most of us only have a twenty to thirty year window of opportunity to save for retirement. It just doesn’t make sense to keep your money in investments that are suffering ten, twenty, or thirty percent losses. The Pride Rotation Portfolios at the Noble Group help grow your money when markets permit and helps protect your money when needed. Moving between different asset classes depending on the market keeps your investments ahead of the game. View Mark’s six minute video outlining The Pride Rotation Portfolios at http://3.ly/prideportfolios . During Mark’s twenty-five years as a financial advisor, he worked with institutions including Lehman Brothers, UBS and Merrill Lynch before coming to The Noble Group. He says, “I love the personal and professional freedom of an independent company. Got Pizza?

Karen Daniels consider myself a pizza connoisseur; but don’t we all? When we were kids, it was our favorite meal. In college, it was our

I

main food group and an affordable choice. So now when we choose to eat pizza, we enjoy something reminiscent of our childhood, but with a gourmet touch to match our more sophisticated tastes. That’s why when I eat pizza, it’s got to be really good; and La Magia Café and Pizza achieves this in spades. When I recently visited LaMagia Café with my kids, people were chatting between tables and everyone seemed to know the owner, Ray. We enjoyed the easy, comfortable atmosphere and the rich aroma of

pizzas baking in their stone oven. There’s something about stone-oven pizza that’s so wonderful, you’ll never want any other kind. As we settled into a booth and viewed the menu, I was willing to consider some of the specialty pastas like Magia’s Pasta - pan seared fresh tilapia over herb potato gnocchi with a garlic lemon sauce. I was even tempted by the Ravioli Pomodoro topped with sautéed portabella mushrooms and fresh garlic, but I could not resist the Manhattan Pizza which its garlic sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, tomatoes, black olives, green olives, and mushrooms. My kids had an easier time choosing, they ordered the traditional pepperoni. As for what my children thought of their medium pepperoni pizza—we had no leftovers to bring home. Both pizzas’ crusts had a perfect blend of crispness, yet still doughy enough to sink your teeth into, and the pizza was dripping with cheese. The ingredients were fresh and generously applied. The small pizza is the perfect size for one person, and you could add a side salad, your choice of Caesar, Greek, or the house, and you’ll be pleasantly filled…and still have room for dessert.

Come Join Ray’s family who say the Pizza is molto buona!

The restaurant is great for families, for date-nights, or business lunches. In addition to authentic Italian food, LaMagia offers a few popular and favorite American dishes. All meals are prepared with extra virgin olive oil and the freshest ingredients and herbs. Come check out La Magia Café & Pizza for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. Engineering Your Body

Sarah Warburton t a very early age Dr. Mark Vann, MD was intensely curious about the way things work. After considering a career in engineering, he says, “I realized the most amazing and complex machine I could study was the human body…and that’s why I went into orthopedics. I love finding the newest scientific solutions to engineering problems of your foot and ankle.” The promise of warm weather and a vibrant, diverse population brought Dr. Vann and his wife to Sugar Land. He says, “We’d spent lots of time in the frozen north and knew we were looking for a temperate climate and an energetic community.” After graduating from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit and completing his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC, Dr. Vann returned to Michigan for a prestigious fellowship in complex surgery and reconstruction of the foot and ankle at the Michigan International Foot and Ankle Center. There he received extensive training in the full spectrum of lower extremity surgery. He says, “I had the privilege of working with an amazing mentor who really pioneered new techniques in flat foot reconstructive surgery. Every year brings new breakthroughs in our understanding and treatment options for this painful disease.”

A

Anyone—men, women, young or old—can suffer from debilitating foot pain that makes living an active life impossible. Dr. Vann says, “I have a strong interest in helping patients who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. This auto-immune disorder affects a younger population than other types of arthritis. New surgical reconstructive techniques have been developed that salvage the joints. Having a range of different solutions for problems of the foot and ankle means we can choose the best option for you and your lifestyle. This field is always changing…that’s the excitement and the challenge of orthopedics.” Your foot and ankle are connected to the rest of the bones in your body. Luckily, Dr. Vann’s been trained in the way your body works together. He says, “The body is a machine that should work in harmony. As an orthopedic surgeon, I have extensive experience in hip, knee, and shoulder reconstruction and that knowledge enhances the way I reconstruct foot and ankle joints.” St. Lukes Hospital Sugar Land Medical Office Building 713-590-5490 1327 Lake Point ParkwaySuite #520 www.EliteOrthopedicsAndSpine.com

Sarah Warburton ife has enough little hiccups...isn’t it wonderful when you find something that really makes things easier? A customdesigned kitchen makes it simpler for your teens to unload the dishwasher, for your husband to put away the groceries, and for you to enjoy your space. Kitchen expert, Ric Trahan says, “My family spends most of our time together in the kitchen, and ShelfGenie makes it easy and uncomplicated. ShelfGenie’s entire process—from deciding on the right products to installation to use—is as simple and easy as one, two three!” After you’ve spent some time in your kitchen, it’s clear which cabinet has a “Bermuda triangle” or blind corner in the back and which cabinet would be perfect for your cookie sheets— if only they fit. It’s easy to fix all the little areas where your kitchen falls short. Ric says, “Our process begins with planning. A design consultant will talk with you about what you use most often and look at the way you move around your kitchen. We can’t sell our products online

for people to purchase with a point and click because we custom-create solutions for the way you actually live. This first step only takes about a half an hour and it’s an essential part of making your space easier to use.” You could move into dozens of houses without finding your dream kitchen. Isn’t it time to create it? Ric says, “Our easy process is perfect for anyone who doesn’t love their current kitchen. You won’t have to deal with the dust and hassle of major renovations and we won’t tear out any cabinets. All the magic actually happens inside your cabinets, drawers, and pantry. Step two, installation, only takes half a day, so you won’t be tempted to move out until the work is done. This is one of the easier, quickest changes you can make to your home… that delivers the biggest long-term return!” Why were people standing three-deep around ShelfGenie’s products at a recent home show? Easy! The straightforward genius of their innovative solutions stole the show!

Ric says, “At ShelfGenie, we offer a lifetime guarantee on materials and installation. We make it simple to rediscover the space you already have!” Step three? Love your kitchen! ShelfGenie 512-771-7894 www.ShelfGenie.com •

A Miracle In Less Than A Week W

Karen Daniels hen Patty and her husband purchased a home in Pecan Grove, they had only one week to remodel before they were scheduled to move in. Their twenty-five year old home was in desperate need of TLC, and when their Realtor recommended Miracle Method for the master bathroom, Patty gave them a call. “I’ve moved several times and have dealt with a lot of contractors, so when I find a good one, I stick with them. Paul and Jonee and their crew were very professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. I’ll be sticking with them and recommending them to everyone.” At first the job was supposed to be just the sinks, tub, and shower in the master bath, but Patty was so impressed with their work, she hired Miracle Method to handle her kitchen countertops as well. The home had the original Formica except for the island which had a quartz surface. Miracle Method was not only able to match the look and color of the quartz, but also the existing bull nose edge. “Unless I point it out that they’re different, you wouldn’t be able to tell. We also went with a higher gloss finish that protects the countertops from the everyday use and abuse. The end result is great.” Patty could not say enough about the level of professional-

ism and Miracle Method’s dedication to quality work. “The prep work was very extensive. An entire day was spent on just that. They hung plastic in the doorways to minimize the dust; they are very skilled at what they do.” And the bonus: how much money they saved. The bathroom took two to three days and so did the kitchen. They were able to meet their week deadline and move into a practically new house. “We moved here from Tucson and our old kitchen countertops were cultured granite. I love how our new kitchen reminds me of our house in Arizona.” Call Jonee and Paul Barnett with Miracle Method today for have a new kitchen or bath in less than a week at a fraction of the cost.
