When Back to School Isn’t Easy…

t’s September and the kids are back into the swing of things at school! Or are they? Betsy de Vega, Learning Specialist and founder of the Kn.I.L.E. Tales from the ER: Constable A.J. Dorr Sarah Warburton

ince he started with the Houston Police Department in 1977, A.J. Dorr has been making our world a safer place. In 1997 (after ten years as the Chief of Police in Needville) he was elected by the people of Precinct 1 to represent them as their Constable. Constable Dorr says, “When I started having back pain in November, I tried to power through, but one day in January the pain was awful...so I went to St. Michael’s Emergency Room. Let me tell you, I’ve been to my share of hospitals and emergency rooms since, and you can’t beat St. Michael’s!” “They brought me back quickly for my exam. The doctor on duty ordered an x-ray...and then he followed it with a CT scan. I could tell from the look on his face that he didn’t like what he saw. He told me he didn’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but there were some suspicious shadows around my spine and he strongly recommended I go the very next day to a doctor to do an MRI. He pointed out some potential problems around my heart and really stressed that I shouldn’t wait around. Then he gave me some pain medication to
help me make it through the night. Well, I felt better the next day and like a typical man I put it off for a couple of weeks. Then I woke up doubled over with pain.”

I had additional surgery to separate my sinus from my brain and to remove the titanium from my forehead and replace it with plastic. I had reconstructive surgery on my face. I felt so self-conscious, but I still had to do the grocery shopping for my family and run errands. I’d use a scarf around my arm and a floppy hat. My husband took off an entire year to take care of me and he was at every appointment. He was a wonderful nurse and my daughter who was in 5th grade was so brave through the whole thing.
