Good Fathers Raise Good Sons.
F
or over eighteen years, Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter of Alan’s Plumbing has taken care of the families of Fort Bend... and he’s raised his own family, too. Alan’s three sons Beau, Luke, and Jake grew up around the business, riding the trucks, diggin’, haulin’, even crawlin’ in the attic. Beau and Luke now have a journeyman’s license and are running their own truck. And Jake earned his apprentice plumber’s license early on. Today Beau and Luke are working full-time with their dad...and you can look for Jake this summer when he’s home from Texas State University. We asked them what they’ve learned from their father….and they had plenty to say! Beau says, “Everything I know I learned from my dad, and he’s the best father and the best teacher for sure. He can’t be everywhere, so I know I have to do the kind of job that would make him proud on every call. That’s why you won’t catch us talking on our cell phones on your time and we always treat you and your home with total respect.” Luke says, “Dad’s old school, so he’s about getting the job done without making fancy promises upfront. He taught us to ‘work smarter, not harder.’ If you take the time to understand the problem and fix it the way it should be fixed the first time, it’s less trouble for the customer and less work in the long run. The only job worth doing is a job done right.” Even as a business-owner working hard to build a reputation and provide for his family, Alan and Uncle Chris made time for the
things that really matter in life. All three of his sons were active in sports, especially at Elkins High. Jake says, “In all the years, even between me and both my brothers, Dad has never missed a game or a sporting event. My dad and Uncle were always there for us...and that taught us that no matter what’s going on in life, family comes first!” Alan’s wife and mother of Beau, Luke, and Jake, Jennifer says,“Our boys have been going out with their dad and uncle since they were about eight or nine years old. They’ve got the credentials, the experience...and they want to make their Dad proud. Maybe I’m not an impartial observer...but I think he’s been a great father!” Need a plumber you can trust? Call Alan’s Plumbing. The plumber who walks through your door might be Alan, his brother Chris, Beau, Luke, or Jake, or fellow team member Kyle...and you’ll get quality work from guys you can trust. From us at Alan’s Plumbing, Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there. We appreciate the hard work you put into making our community stronger. Alan’s Plumbing

ummer’s coming and it’s the perfect time to relax outside in the evenings. A cool drink, good company, and the right music make for the perfect evening...but don’t settle for the equivalent of an old boombox blaring by your pool. Richard Machemehl and Scott Crain of Home Theater Evolutions say, “We’ve got options that deliver incredible sound quality, work with your landscaping, and stand up to the elements.” Spice up your next barbecue by adding sound to your patio, deck, or pool. Richard says, “The Sonance Landscape Series is an outdoor speaker system that delivers an even blanket of sound coverage with unbelievable quality like a high end Hi-Fi system. In fact, we’ve heard it called the world’s best sounding outdoor audio system...and it all comes from small satellite speakers and belowground subwoofers hidden out of sight amongst plants and under foliage. They direct the sound where you want it...and keep it from spilling out to disturb the neighbors.” Every item in the Home Theater Evolutions showroom has been hand-picked by Richard and Scott to offer the best performance and value. Scott says, “We love the flexibility of the Sonance Landscape Series... it’s totally scalable to suit any size space and can be expanded at any time afterwards. Once installed, it’s virtually invisible, with the satellite speakers and subwoofer hidden out of sight. And the speakers are constructed from a dark brown composite that won’t corrode or flake and resists chipping and scratching. On a patio, we can build the subwoofer into a planter or hide it under outdoor furniture, otherwise it has a below-ground design. We still offer some of the molded
rock style speakers and some of our other favorites like Niles and StereoStone also make outdoor speakers...but Sonance really takes the sound experience to an entirely new level!” Over the decades since Richard and Scott first became friends back in the second grade, they’ve seen major changes in the world of electronics. Richard says, “One of the coolest developments is the move towards home automation. The Savant Home Automation System works with your iPad or iPhone to make coordinating their televisions, music, security system, and theater room easy and completely stress-free. It’s the system we installed for TLC’s ‘The Little Couple’ and at the Toyota Center for the Rockets. Come by the showroom and test drive the Savant system and our speakers for yourself!” This year Home Theater Evolutions received an A+ rating from BBB and has been awarded the 2014 BBB Gold Star Certificate. Scott says, “We are so proud of our outstanding employees and the reputation we’ve made. Many things have changed, but our motto remains the same. Tell us what you want and we’ll put together a package that fits your goals, your space, and your budget!” Home Theater Evolutions 281-980-2300 3157 Highway 6 at Williams Trace www.htevo.com

ou wouldn’t ask J.J. Watt of the Texans to perform your open heart surgery, and your favorite first grade teacher would probably have a rough time on the football field. Talent, training, and a lifetime of passion make a true professional...and when you find someone with that skill and dedication, it’s unmistakable! After earning his medical degree at La Salle School of Medicine in Mexico City, Dr. Ulises Baltazar did his General Residency at East Tennessee State University, where he was both the Administrative Chief Resident and won the Outstanding Resident in General Surgery award. He could have chosen any surgical speciality at all...but he knew his passion. Dr. Baltazar says, “I couldn’t resist the caliber of technology and precision used in vascular surgery...and when I did my Vascular Surgery Residency at Baylor College of Medicine, I fell in love with Houston, too.” If your legs are tired and achy, or you’re suffering from bulging, painful veins, come see Dr Baltazar for a consultation. He says, “The National Institutes of Health estimates that 60% of all men and women suffer from some form of vein disorder. Even men in their twenties may suffer from varicose veins...and it’s important to seek treatment! Varicose veins aren’t
just a cosmetic issue, they’re a vascular health issue and can lead to venous diseases like deep venous thrombosis and venous stasis ulcers. I pride myself on offering a range of treatments, so we can choose the best one for you.” Board-certified in Vascular Surgery with a reputation that is second to none, Dr. Baltazar performed the first case of Mechano-Chemical Ablation (MOCA) in Texas. He’s had years of training, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the arteries and veins and extensive experience in placing needles, guide wires, using lasers, ultrasound and the latest technology and techniques...including the new laser vein removal that’s done in-office and takes less than 30 minutes. Dr. Baltazar says, “As I demonstrated on ABC Channel 13 news, this new laser technique works directly on the vein with minimal bleeding. Patients find it much more comfortable than the old ‘stripping technique’ and the recovery is quite quick.” If you’re suffering from varicose veins, put this doctor on your starting lineup. Dr. Baltazar says, “I live right here in Fort Bend with my wife and two daughters, and I’m committed to providing the best vascular care for this community. hen Iris Roman was watching television one night, she saw something that changed her life. She says, “When I heard Dr. Ahmadi saying that many people incorrectly expect exercise to melt away their tummies, it opened my eyes. For years I’ve been working out four days a week and I lift weights, but I still had a bulge I couldn’t budge. I decided to call Dr. Ahmadi and find out what he could do for me. I learned he offers the Lipotuck™, a two-in-one procedure and that I would need an in-person consultation to see if I was a candidate. They were very open with me over the phone about the pricing and the time it would take.” “Before deciding, I went to a doctor in Puerto
Before
Rico for a second opinion. He told me I would have to have two separate procedures...one for the tummy tuck and another for the liposuction... and I would have to lose another twenty pounds first. The Lipotuck™ is much less expensive than getting a tummy tuck and lipo separately!” Dr. Ahmadi of Avante Plastic Surgery is boardcertified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to provide all aspects of cosmetic surgery. His Lipotuck™ combines the benefits of a tummy tuck and liposuction for a result that’s superior to either alone. This completelycustomized procedure removes excess fat and skin from the lower abdomen, smoothes bulges, and creates a naturally curvy figure. Iris says, “I went back to Dr. Ahmadi for a consultation. As soon as he looked at me he said, “You are perfect for the Lipotuck™.” He explained that although I worked out,
my abdominal muscles had lost their elasticity because I’d had four children. He did a thorough examination, saw that I had just a bulge in my tummy, and told me that just one procedure, the Lipotuck™, would do everything I wanted. My husband told me to go ahead...and I’m so glad I did!” “My sister flew in from Puerto Rico to take care of me afterwards...and she was so impressed with Dr. Ahmadi that she had him give her a lift around her eyes. He’s an amazing artist! I followed all my post-op instructions and was back at work in just two weeks. Dr. Ahmadi saw me over and over after my procedure...he really cares about his patients and constantly looks after your well-being. I lost another twelve pounds because of the surgery and I am so amazingly happy!” “It’s been four years since my Lipotuck™...and I’m still wearing a size four. I’m fifty-eight now and my oldest child is thirty...and I’m enjoying a body that no amount of exercise alone could have given me! I’ve been telling everyone: You don’t need two different procedures if you have the right doctor... Dr. Ahmadi. When you go see him, be sure to give him a hug from me!”

Cleaning to the “Max” Max’s Cleaning Tip: Instead of serving the kids Kool-Aid or “Bug Juice” this summer...why not use it to clean your toilet? Max says, “Kool-Aid is natural and non-toxic... and full of citric-acid. That makes it a great, safe choice to clean the toilet. Before you go to bed, flush your toilet and pour in a packet of Kool-Aid... any flavor or color is fine. Let it sit overnight and flush in morning. Worried your toilet will end up blue or red? Don’t worry...the color won’t bleed or stain a porcelain surface.”

reat dads. Our community is blessed with a lot of them. Ask anyone to tell you what makes a father a Dad and there’s a common theme. Great dads are committed to their families and are always available to talk about anything with their children. When life throws them curveballs, they field them with the family’s best interest in mind. And most of all...great dads have a genuine concern for the well-being of other human beings, especially their kids. Cole, Chloe, and Caitlyn’s dad, Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D, R.Ph at Campbell’s Compounding in Sugar Land is not only a great dad, but also a great pharmacist! Dr. Campbell says, “After working for several compounding pharmacies, I decided it was time to pursue my personal mission...to provide a neighborhood pharmacy that prides itself on customer service by providing a family feel. Next Stop...St. Michael’s!
An Emergency Room that Feels Like Home by Sarah Warburton
“I
’ve known Dr. Shannon Orsak and his brother Brian Orsak since they were first getting ready to open St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms in Sugar Land,” says Michael Garfield, the “High-Tech Texan.” You can find Michael on KPRC radio and TV stations across the state, and he trusts St. Michael’s to keep himself and his family healthy. He says, “I make a living from my voice, but talking all day takes a toll. When Dr. Orsak heard how hoarse I was at an event, he told me to come by St. Michael’s. They got me the treatment I needed...and gave me truly personal care.” “As the father of three sons (including two who are driving), it’s good to know St. Michael’s is there for us. We’ve all been in for everything from a broken ankle to knee injuries to flu tests. With three active boys, there was a time when St. Michael’s was practically our second home! Kids love the comfortable waiting room with a TV, leather couches, and candy (or coffee for parents). I’ve always appreciated bringing them to a place that is welcoming and not at all scary. You’ll see many of the same doctors and nurses every time...they’ve got a real family feel. In fact, I’ve been known to drop by when I’m in the area just for a chat. Can you imagine being that comfortable with any other emergency room?”
“I live here in Fort Bend, and it means a lot to me that St. Michael’s supports our community. They sponsor local schools and sports teams and really get involved. You may have seen me working at one of their booths...because I believe in spreading the word!” Why would you settle for less than the best? St. Michael’s offers everything you need from an ER––physicians trained in emergency medicine, X-ray, Ultrasound and CT, and an on-site diagnostic lab––in a welcoming environment without a wait! You’ll pay the same ER price for concierge service at St. Michael’s as you would pay at a standard ER...or even less. St. Michael’s ER is in-network with AETNA and also accepts more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. At this time, Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare do not participate with free-standing ER’s. “No one ever wants to go to an emergency room,” says Michael, “but it’s a fact of life that emergencies happen. It’s great to have St. Michael’s just around the corner. I know we’ll always get in and out quickly… and enjoy superior care with a smile from familiar faces!”’ At this time, Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare do not participate with freestanding ER’s.

The SECRET to SUCCESS
E
ver wonder what it takes to become a successful businesswoman? We asked Linda Riddle and her answer was simple...hard work! She says, “When I went out on my own, it was thrilling and terrifying. I took any deal I could and drove all over...nothing was ‘too small.’ I still work just as hard as I did back in the day, because I remember how it all started!” “Before I had the amazing team I have today, I started out as a single mom. I worked in different areas of real estate including construction management, property management, and residential as an assistant to a top producer. Todd and I met and founded Team Riddle thirteen years ago. We’ve grown together as a couple, just as our business has grown and risen to the challenges. As we became more successful, we added more team members, but we still take a hands-on approach.” “Another key component of our success is partnering with the right people like Tom Boyd & Jeff Pope with AMCAP Mortgage Bank. Our business is based on long-term satisfaction and referrals, so we look for people like Tom & Jeff that we can trust to deliver superior service and really take care of our clients. Houses are moving very quickly right now...and we know their team along with ours can move just as quickly to help our clients get the homes they really want.” “My message to other women is that if you have a dream in your heart, you can achieve it through hard work. My parents couldn’t afford to send me to college, so I worked on my own to get where I am today. It’s one reason I find it so rewarding to mentor other women starting out in real estate. There’s hope...I’m living proof that drive and dedication can make a dream come true.”

When a knee injury made me reevaluate my life, I remembered my mother always said I could sell ice to the Eskimos. I started out in environmental sales back in the 1980’s. When I met and married Linda, I earned my real estate license. Together we prayed, took a leap of faith and founded Team Riddle...and it’s been an amazing ride!” “We have a simple philosophy: You can’t be everybody’s realtor...just love and care for the clients that we have, and you’ll find success. We pride ourselves on really knowing the market and staying informed, so we can help our clients navigate the crazy world of real estate. From mortgages to titles to contractual issues, we can handle it all. Everyone on our team works hard and stays smart to get our clients everything they deserve.” “Linda and I started out as a team of two, but since then we’ve acquired Nicole Freer, who does a great job for us in Katy, Donna Gonzalez who’s been an amazing asset for the last four years, Laney Kurmatas, a realtor who’ll go all over Greatwood and Richmond, Lauren Fothergill, our office manager and Michelle Spencer, our listing manager. In this business, you have to surround yourself with experienced, knowledgeable people you can trust to ask the right questions and cover all the bases.” “I’ve always believed in the power of a family business. Working with people you can trust one hundred percent makes all the difference. I might answer the phone at ten at night, Linda might be up at five in the morning to work for a client...as a team and as a couple we go the extra mile for our clients. His son Brian says, “We think it’s funny now that he grew up as one of eleven kids in a house without air conditioning in rural Oklahoma... because in 1982 he founded Jackson Air and Heat and began a family tradition that’s still going strong today!” After four years in the Air Force as an air craft mechanic and twenty years with National Cash Register (which brought him to Sugar Land) Johnny started Jackson Air Conditioning. As a teenager, Brian Jackson worked alongside his dad learning about the business from the ground up. Now over thirty years later, Jackson Air is EPA and NATE certified, endorsed by SugarLandNetwork.com, and recipients of both the Angie’s List “Super Service” award and the BBB Award of

In fact, more than eighty percent of our new customers are referrals from friends and family of existing customers! That’s the highest compliment we could earn!” Over their decades in the A/C industry, the Jackson family has seen some incredible changes. Brian says, “We’re excited to introduce Trane’s variable speed XV20i air conditioner with TruComfort™ Technology. A single-stage A/C is either on full blast or off...with nothing in between. A variable speed XV20i A/C gives you just the right amount of cool when you need it and stays within a ½ degree of your setting. Kid Tooth Emergencies...
? d e r a p e r P u o Y e r A
by Amy Sharp une is here and summer is in full swing! The kids are enjoying their new found freedom...riding bikes, playing baseball, climbing trees and jumping off diving boards. Dr. Bianca Sanchez at Little People’s Dentistry says, “Summer is a wonderful time for kids to really be kids and enjoy themselves. Unfortunately, it’s also a time we see many dental emergencies. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, but every parent should be prepared just in case!” “If your child chips or fractures a permanent tooth, rinse the mouth with water and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling. Contact your dentist immediately and bring along any broken tooth fragments you can locate. It’s the same with a toothache...rinse the mouth with warm salt water and apply compresses for swelling. Oral pain relievers like Tylenol or Ibuprofen (following manufacturer’s directions) will help with the pain, but never place aspirin directly on the gums... this causes a chemical burn.” But what if your child completely knocks out a permanent tooth? Dr. Sanchez says, “First and foremost, do not panic! Find the tooth if you can, but do not clean it with soap and water. Always hold the tooth by the crown--the part you see in the mouth. If you can, reinsert the tooth in its socket, but do not force it. If you cannot reinsert it, place the tooth in a glass of milk. SAVOR THE

“W
atching my daughter Natalie dance and fishing with my son Matt are some of the best moments of my life,” says father and local dentist, Dr. Thomas Lomonte, DDS. “My own dad taught me a lot of lifelong lessons––like how to fix a leaky faucet––but most importantly he taught me how to be a good father. We are so proud of Matt, a member of the 2014 graduating class at Texas A&M. Such a bittersweet day–you’ve hoped and prayed for it for over twenty years...and when it finally happens you wonder where the time has gone. Now more than ever I’m thankful for all those fishing trips with Matt as a kid...and I look forward to more with him this summer!” June is the month we honor all dads, the men that have put aside everything to provide the best life possible for their children. Of course Dad is tired sometimes...it’s a tough job! But if he’s “sawing logs” every night (or has been banished to the sofa for excessive snoring!) he may be fatigued. Dr. Lomonte says, “Snoring not only costs you (and your loved ones) sleep...fatigue can lead to headaches, concentration problems, hypertension, depression, and cardiac disease! The patented, FDA-approved Snore Guard® intra-oral device features Air Flow Technology™ that prevents the jaw and tongue from dropping back into the throat and restricting the air passage. Snore Guard® has been proven up to 99% effective in the treatment of snoring and it’s FDA cleared for both the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.” Forty-five percent of men snore at least a few nights a week. If the Dad in your home is one of them...encourage him to go see Dr. Lomonte. Dr. Lomonte says, “My kids are growing up and leaving the nest. Savor every minute your kids are still at home...every dance recital, football game, and fishing trip. Don’t allow snoring to steal your ability to savor some of the best moments in life!”

esigning for dads is about more than leather and dark wood. At Grand Windows and Interiors Candelario “Cande” Lopez and his wife, designer Caron have a world of colors, textures, and design solutions at their fingertips. Cande says, “As a family man and a business owners, I know the importance of the bottom line. Running an efficient, local, family-owned business means we offer home improvements you can afford. We also offer a great guarantee...and no hidden fees!” If dad wants something stylish that can also save money, Grand Windows and Interiors is your one-stop-shop for solutions. Let the outdoors in while keeping the bugs out with a remote-control exterior patio shade. Cande says, “These shades offer solar protection and protect your family from mosquitoes and other bugs...while allowing you to enjoy your view. I like how easy they are to control with a remote and how clean the zipper track keeps your patio. We also have
interior shades you can control with your ipad or iphone...it doesn’t get any easier than that!” This Father’s Day, why not give dad a break on the bills? Caron says, “Our clients are amazed to learn that as much as 50% of a home’s heating and cooling energy can be lost through its windows... unless you choose the right treatments. Hunter Douglas window fashions provide window insulation to minimize the sun’s heat during the summer. We can help you chose something that works with your existing decor...and also with our Texas temperatures!” Although the designers at Grand Windows and Interiors are women (Caron Lopez and Joni Britton), they couldn’t do their job with Cande. Caron says, “We can design with confidence, knowing Cande’s a problem-solver and a real perfectionist. He makes sure every shutter and window will be hung and aligned perfectly. He’s a problem-solver and a true artisan...and his metal-work is amazing! For one client,
we even created a large, Hacienda-style cabinet for a dining room from Mesquite with hand-painted fresco details, custom wrought-iron knobs, and a wrought-iron grapevine lattice over the open shelves.” “In my life,” says Cande, “I’m focused on God and family and I’m so proud of my kids and blessed to have a profession I love that helps provide for them. With over 20,000 gorgeous fabrics, trims, window treatments, and hardware from more than fifty different quality suppliers...we make it easy to give your home a ‘Grand’ makeover.”

Sugar-Coated Success I
By Steve Groughceres
f you’ve never sunk your teeth into a sweet, puffy-while-crispy, flaky beignet, you’ve missed out on the perfect gourmet donut. These aren’t pre-made, iced and sprinkled rings that you bribe your coworkers with when you show up 20 minutes late. No, this is hand-cut, made-to-order, puffed art, topped with powdered sugar, and exploding with sweet air. But the Sugar Land uninitiated are in luck: In what sounds like a reality TV food show, the best local version of this French/ American pastry can be found at a café that’s just as famous for its French and Vietnamese music (seriously!), no-nonsense German owner (described sometimes as “cranky”), and his young, hotshot Vietnamese partner—who’s as much a daughter to him as operational manager. We know what you’re thinking: Yep, only in Sugar Land. A classically trained German chef, Joachim Jantzen knew beignets were hot—literally and figuratively. In 1999, once he ensured the world-famous Café du Monde in New Orleans – which made beignets famous in the America – wasn’t venturing to Houston, he opened Chez Beignets, first in inner-loop Houston, then a Hong Kong Market location in Bellaire. Lovingly dubbed quán ông già (Vietnamese slang for “the old guy”) by his young Vietnamese patrons, Jantzen has now brought his perfect pastries to Sugar Land. Breezy French tunes pump from the speakers, lush plants and stained glass lamps hover around the tables, and pictures of the Arc de

Triomphe and Eiffel Tower adorn the walls. It’s a French café perfect for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or light evening dessert. “People tell us all the time that our flavor is way better than Café du Monde,” says Lynn Quan, who is Jantzen’s young, hotshot Vietnamese manager. “They love that ours are dense, and that we can fill ours with chocolate, raspberry or vanilla cream. And they appreciate that it’s made right in front of them.” And it’s more than just puffy beignets. Donuts come in “fingers” and “pillows,” and there’s chicory coffee, gourmet teas, ice cream, milk shakes, Vietnamese drinks, and bubble tea and tapioca drinks. It’s all part of Jantzen and Quan’s plan to make Chez Beignets a place for everyone of every age and every scene. Quan, whom Jantzen hired when she was 21, says she’s literally “grown up in

this place.” Jantzen was so impressed with her work ethic, he recently made the now 27-year-old a partner in his entire Chez Beignets operation. “I have a lot of plans,” says Quan. “I want us to be all over Houston. And Austin. Everywhere, really. I want to franchise—I want an empire. I want everyone to know about us.” Jantzen, who hears this speech daily, rolls his eyes and offers a proud, “that’s my girl” grin. After all, his young partner/unofficial daughter has the recipe for sweet success. With Chez Beignets’s ambience, loyal customers, oh-so-perfect beignets – and with Lynn leading the way while Joachim rolls his eyes – it seems just a matter of time before everyone knows all about those amazing puffy donuts. You know, the ones at that “old guy’s place.”

harles Swihart founded Sugar Land PC eleven years ago...and today it’s a Fort Bend favorite. He says, “Our primary role is to provide IT support for area businesses. Our clients include engineering firms, doctors, oil and gas companies, music stores... essentially any business that doesn’t have an IT department. We install servers, network offices, and perform any IT service you might need. A cornerstone of our business is the level of customer service we provide...and that’s what I also expect from the companies I use like Classic Chevrolet.” “I purchased a pre-owned vehicle for my business from Classic Chevrolet and the entire experience was excellent...fast, easy-inand-out, great service. They found me a pre-owned paneled wagon that I got wrapped for Sugar Land PC. Since then I’ve had it in for maintenance a few times, and the experience has been just as good as buying the vehicle in the first place. Ever since Don Kerstetter and his team at Classic Chevy took over that location, it’s been run right. I remember over ten years ago seeing a man sitting on the grass next to the former dealership with a sign saying they “stole his car.” It doesn’t take more than a minute in Classic Chevy to see it’s completely different now. They’ve got a great team in all their departments from sales to service, parts and the body shop.”
“As a local business owner and a New Territory resident for fifteen years, I look for companies that support our community. I’m involved with the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and I’ve been so impressed with Classic Chevrolet’s philosophy of giving. If you have a favorite non-profit or you’ve been to a charity event in Fort Bend, chances are pretty good they’ve been a contributor. Don really believes in giving back to our community...and I appreciate that!” Classic’s General Sales Manager Mark Kolon says, “A customercentered philosophy is at the heart of everything we do. We know we may only have one chance to impress you...and that takes every member of our team from service to parts to sales.” Don Kerstetter, Owner of Classic Chevrolet says, “Since we took over the dealership that stands at the corner of 59 and 90A five years ago, we’ve made big changes in the building...and even bigger ones in the way customers enjoy the dealership experience. We pride ourselves on transparency, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. You’re always welcome to drop by and see the difference for yourself!”

Men Love Miracle a Good
by Sarah Warburton
Maybe you’d heard that men aren’t interested in the look of kitchens or bathrooms. Just a quick trip across Facebook puts that myth to rest. One friend of mine posted day-by-day updates on the remodel of his kitchen... and over two months that was a lot of photos! Local husband and wife team, Paul and Jonee Barnett, told us, “Men and women both care about living in a home that looks new. We’ve seen Miracle Method Surface Refinishing make men and women feel house-proud and happy...without turning your home inside out!” Think about it. If you have your kitchen remodeled, where will you live your life? One homeowner told us, “For six weeks we couldn’t use the kitchen or the living area because of the open floor plan. Everything had been pulled out or covered with a tarp. We had to live in the bedrooms and eat out pretty much every night.” That’s no way to live! Paul says, “ The Miracle Method transforms tile, cultured marble, Corian®, Formica®, Wilsonart® and other laminate countertops.…without ripping them out. Natural Accents™ is a finish with the multicolor appearance and texture of stone at a fraction of the cost. We can apply it to countertops and tiles, tubs and showers, for a seamless, non-porous, heat-resistant and scratch-resistant surface. In just a few days we can give you a major change...without a major headache!” Working together at Miracle Method doesn’t mean Paul and Jonee spend every minute of their day together. Paul says, “You’ll either see me driving around town talking on my blue tooth...or I’m in a home giving an estimate or checking on a customer’s job. Jonee’s most likely to answer the phone, as well as working the showroom and giving estimates. About thirteen or fourteen years ago I took a discovery flight...and it turned into my first flying lesson. Now that I have my pilot’s license, Jonee and I get ‘alone time’ when we fly to Miracle Method conventions or to do out of town estimates for commercial work... or on vacation.” “Call us for your free estimate” say Jonee and Paul. “Give us a few days and we’ll give you a kitchen or bathroom that looks like new!”

Summer Slim Down “S
ummer is a great time to give yourself a jumpstart to a healthy life,” says Dr. Jeffery Alford. “At Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss, I offer the support you need to succeed!” Tired of counting calories or carbs or protein? Make it simple with “food rehab.” The Medi-Health weight loss program offers easy, effective weight loss with delicious, simpleto-prepare single serving meals. Dr. Alford says, “Together we’ll set your weight loss goal and choose a Medi-Health meal replacement strategy. The Full Meal Replacement strategy is the simplest plan. You’ll choose three Medi-Health Meals and Medi-Health Snacks a day...for a no-stress, no-planning approach to weight loss. On the Partial Meal Replacement strategy you’ll choose two Medi-Health Meals and one to two Medi-Health Snacks. This plan gives you added flexibility for family dinners, businesses lunches, or vacations.” “My patients like Medi-Health because the meals taste much better than other meal replacement options, the program is simple and short-term, and there’s online support in the “members only” social media portion of the website.” Alan Basinger, Founder/CEO of Medi-Health, says, “Once you are cured of the habit of overeating, you won’t need diet products any more. I personally lost over 60lbs on Medi-Health and have transitioned to a normal diet. Not once was I hungry, or did I have to cheat, or did I feel like I was eating cardboard. I know this plan works not only
because of the clinical trials and doctors who support us... but because it worked for me!” Ready to create your own “Before” and “After” photos? As featured on “The Doctors” and examined by Dr. Oz, the FDA-approved i-Lipo offers an affordable, non-invasive solution to cellulite and unwanted fat. Dr. Alford says, “Both men and women can benefit from the safe and painless i-Lipo laser. It shrinks stubborn fat cells immediately...without damaging skin or surrounding tissue!” I-Lipo uses a “cold, low level” laser to liquify fat so your body can dispose of it. I-Lipo can target specific areas like the upper arms, abdomen, or chin... and there’s no pain, no needles, and no downtime! After i-Lipo breaks down your fat cells, exercising helps dispose of the fat more efficiently...turbo-charging the impact of your exercise routine. Ready to drop the weight and live a healthier life? You can succeed with a doctor who takes the time to get you the support you really need. As the only man in a houseful of women, Dr. Jeffrey Alford knows the importance of being a good listener. He says, “My daughters––Danielle, Nikki, and Chrissy––are the lights of my life. I pledge to care for each of my patients and their families as I do for my own!”

My son
Sam’s Story
“M
y son Sam struggled with social issues and anxiety at public school,” says Patti Sedita, “and it affected his schoolwork and his spirit. We had friends at KnILE Academy, so we brought Sam there. He’s always been a high academic achiever, and he was thrilled when the intial assessment revealed he’d mastered 8th grade history. When he enrolled at KnILE in February, he began with 9th grade history...and he’s now completed that coursework as well.”
Freedom from Stress, Bullying, Drama, Busywork, Crowds, Anxiety, Boredom “After his first week Sam said he loved the freedom of working without worrying about a thousand other people. We’ve seen him go back to the sweet, anxiety-free guy we’d known before. There’s a real camaraderie across the age groups at KnILE. Sam plays chess during lunch with a senior and has shared interest in computer games with some of the younger students. In May the whole school put on a mock trial and everyone was able to play a role as the jury, lawyers, judge, or defendant. No one is left out...and the intimate atmosphere means that conflict is mediated and resolved, not just left for the kids to struggle through on their own.” “At KnILE kids can arrange their own desks, use headphones, snack when they want, and there’s always soft music playing. Since Sam can focus at school without getting bogged down in busywork
or social issues, usually there’s no homework. My fifth grader, Jack, is extremely social, but needs extra work in math. He’ll start at KnILE in the fall...and is quite excited about having free time after school for sports and just being a kid. KnILE has been so liberating for us as a family!” “We are accepting enrollment in 3rd - 12th grades for the fall in KnILE Prep Academy,” says Betsy de Vega, founder of KnILE Center. “Look for news about our upcoming Grand Expansion...we are excited about the future!” Call to reserve your spot for summer in our one-on-one, educational training sessions through EduCoachNow in Sugar Land or Missouri City. Over a hundred years later, the Vogelsang Antique Emporium features antiques, a wine room, a cafe, a theater, and a speciality food shop. In 1987 the site was awarded a Texas Historical Plaque. After graduating from the University of Texas where he met his wife Marcia, Bob worked as an electrical engineer for Collins Radio on equipment used by NASA. He says, “I left to earn my MBA and became a professor at the University of Dallas and eventually served as assistant to the dean. Then some friends from Collins called me up with an idea for a new project.” When Bob opened the National Satellite Technical Institute, it was the first satellite technical school in America. He says, “We set up eight antennae in the parking lot where Bob’s Tacos is now. We started Global Communications Systems, Inc, to provide satellite television services to the apartments of Houston. Then I founded the National Satellite Network and we pioneered ‘pay-per-view’ satellite to the hotels of Vegas. Today as regulations change, we’re expanding into new areas.” As President of the National Satellite Cable Association and eventually of the National Satellite Programming Network, Bob saw the industry take off. More Than the Cabinet Kings of Houston! by Sarah Warburton
M
aybe you’ve heard Mike Stevens and Mark Carter of the Kitchen & Bath Showroom called “The Cabinet Kings of Houston”...but they do so much more! Mark says, “Custom cabinetry is near and dear to our hearts, but it’s only one part of what we do. We’re a one-stop-shop to take you from design through every aspect of your remodel to your final vision. One call does it all!” Since 2005, the Kitchen & Bath Showroom has built a reputation as “The People to Know, The Place to Go.” Mike connects with clients, keeps things running smoothly, and has a wealth of knowledge and resources at his fingertips. He says, “In our Showroom you won’t find slick guys with a few days of training and fancy shirts. We put our heart into every job we do. Our entire team has a passion for transforming homes from the inside...and we’ve done over 800 remodeling projects on the west side of Houston alone.” Mark specializes in design and has been designing and installing kitchen cabinets and countertops since 1990. He says, “We’re family-owned and operated, and licensed in Houston, Sugar Land, and all surrounding areas. Mike and I have over fifty years of combined experience in the industry and we live with our families right here in Fort Bend.”
Don’t be overwhelmed by the million steps needed to remodel your kitchen or bathroom...just call the Kitchen & Bath Showroom. Mark says, “We offer design services with a licensed designer, or we can work with your design. We can replace a single element or create an entire kitchen or bath for you from the ground up...with tile, cabinets, countertops, appliances, and more!” Mike adds, “Our clients love knowing up front how much something will cost and love having us coordinate all the details.” Making a single call to the Kitchen & Bath Showroom puts armies of specialists at your service...and makes it simple to orchestrate the work. Mark says “If you’ve got any questions or concerns as the project’s being done, Teri Gilberg aka ‘the Re-Modelista’ sets foot on every job we’ve got. She’s passionate, full of energy, and makes communication easy and clear!” So why were Mike and Mark called the “Cabinet Kings of Houston?” Mike says, “We were pleased to receive that compliment from a happy customer for whom we installed cabinets... but we do so much more and we’re always at your service. In our world, the customer is king!”

Dynamic Orthodontic Duo
BY AMY SHARP
“A
straight smile is a lifetime investment,” says Dr. Jane Lu of Scott and Jane Orthodontics. “With that in mind, Scott and I do everything we can to make orthodontic treatment convenient, affordable, and fun!” Board-certified orthodontists with over 20 years combined experience, Dr. Jane and her husband Dr. Scott Huang are the dynamic duo. Recently selected by patients, peers, and colleagues for the elite clubs of “America’s Top Dentists,” this husband/wife practice was named the Top Orthodontic Practice in Texas 2014. Dr. Scott says, “We offer everyone, young and old, a free-of-charge consultation. We take digital pictures and x-rays and view them on a smartboard with you. We can draw directly on these images of your teeth from every angle, showing you what needs to be done. Since we’ll have this comprehensive view up-front, if treatment is required, we can tell you both the total cost and length of time it should take.” At Scott and Jane Orthodontics, patients sign in at a touchscreen and can hang out and play games at the iPad
bar. Once in the chair, patients enjoy watching movies while getting their braces adjusted. The office is open until six on weekdays and Saturday from nine till one, so the kids won’t have to miss school and you won’t have to take off work to get to an appointment. They take care of filing to your insurance company and in-house interest-free financing is available. Dr. Scott and Dr. Jane love giving back to our community through offering contests, sponsoring youth activities, and lending a helping hand. Dr. Scott says, “In one of our recent contests, Girl Scouts submitted essays about their role model. We purchased 200 boxes of cookies from the essay winner and donated them to Lunches of Love. We thought of it as another way to share a smile!” Ready to start braces this summer? Call Scott and Jane Orthodontics for a cool summer promotion! eye emergencies
“ The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”
“Y
our eyes are the windows to your health,” says Dr. Anh Doan of Missouri City’s Vision Source. “As an Optometrist, I diagnose and manage treatment for diseases, disorders, and injuries of the eye... and offer co-management and aftercare for cataracts surgery, LASIK, or other major procedures. Remember I do more than glasses...I’m the primary care provider for your eyes!” Instead of sitting in an ER or Urgent Care Center to see a doctor who’s not a specialist, call Dr. Doan for vision or eye emergencies. She says, “Some emergencies include ocular trauma like being hit by a baseball, a foreign body like a shard of metal or plastic, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). Lastly, if you suddenly see a large influx of floaters accompanied by flashes of light, I would be concerned about a retinal tear or detachment, which requires treatment within 24 hours to prevent permanent vision loss. Call me first for any eye emergency.” If you have itchy, red eyes, you need a real eye doctor, not just a Google expert. Dr. Doan says, “Dry eye syndrome is different from allergies, although the two conditions can co-exist or even exacerbate each other.

Both uncontrolled allergies and unrelieved dry eyes can lead to abrasion, infection, slowness in healing, decreased sensitivity, scarring, or even loss of vision. When your eyes don’t feel well, you won’t see well either...but I offer the right diagnosis and treatment!” Has your vision started to get blurry? Dr. Doan says, “Sometimes the answer is as simple as a new glasses prescription, but other times poor vision is caused by a more serious condition. Glaucoma affects more than 2.2 million Americans and it’s completely painless. Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes and the leading cause of new-onset blindness in American adults. A comprehensive eye exam is the only way to detect either of these diseases. There is no cure in these cases for loss of vision...but with early detection and treatment, we can usually save your sight.” Protect your vision by visiting Dr. Doan every year...and keep her number in your phone for emergencies. She says, “I’m always happy to see you!” Dr. Anh Doan, O.D. ~ Vision Source! 281-261-2647 4725 Highway 6 South www.visionsource-missouricity.com
Hawaiian. Loving Hands. Heaven.
C
an you feel the relaxation and gratitude? At Spa Heaven, conveniently located on Hwy 6 near Telfair in Sugar Land, the highly skilled therapists promote healing through both western and eastern massage modalities. Think beyond the traditional and typical Swedish massage. Spa Heaven offers more than ten different therapies–including lymphatic
Owner Chalan Wyatt and her three boys
drainage and Thai massage––and their signature massage, the Ayus Lomi Lomi. Owner Chalan Wyatt says, “Lomi Lomi is the traditional Hawaiian loving hands massage. It’s an intimate and healing massage that both decreases the negative energy and
increases the positive energy. Instead of ‘fixing a problem,’ Lomi Lomi allows you to return to harmony and balance.” Maybe you don’t know which massage therapy would work best for you? Chalan says, “We invite you to a free personal consultation where you tell us why you are coming in. Maybe you have trouble sleeping, or just need to relax or have a knot in your neck. Or maybe your daughter or best friend is getting married next week and you would like to reserve a private bridal spa party? We listen and then recommend the best treatment, tailoring each spa session especially for you with a therapist highly skilled in the required treatment.” The mission at Spa Heaven is healing... and healing is also Chalan’s ministry in life. Chalan says, “Healing through massage is a blessing to me, and a step along my lifelong project I call ‘A Place for Dreamers.’ My purpose in life is to help people heal both physically and emotionally. I provided a temporary home to three families from New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. I was a mortgage broker in a prior career where I worked to help families save their homes from foreclosure. Through every step I’ve been rewarded tenfold.
All three of my wonderful sons–Anthony, Molique, and Roland–have extremely giving hearts. My oldest has come home shoeless because someone at school needed new shoes. I’m so proud of all them!” Do you need relaxation and healing in your life? Schedule your free consultation at Spa Heaven today...where healing hands make you whole again. A Tale of Two Studies
T
oday more people work from home, kids have online homework and your “paperwork” is electronic. Steve Procter, owner of Procter Custom Woodworking, says, “We need to rethink home office design to work in today’s world. With laptops, wireless access, and cloud storage, you no longer need bulky furniture and filing cabinets. A slimmer design is more appealing and may create the perfect workspace...outside the home office. I’ve recently done studies for two different families. One converted a wall in a study to usable cabinets, and the other transformed the back half of a family room into a study with drawer banks and a standalone desk.”
by Amy Sharp
Daniel of Missouri City’s hobby is woodworking. But when his wife wanted to build out a wall in the study, she wanted a professional to bring her vision to reality. David says, “I knew Steve from church. We had talked woodworking and I knew he would do an outstanding job.” Steve built tall painted cabinets with center file drawers and a lighted display shelf. “I wanted to do the lighting myself,” says David, “so Steve cut the holes and provided the lighting and let me do that part. I’m so impressed. The bottom cabinets are incredibly sturdy. Steve thought ahead, making the pull-out drawers fit both standard and legal drawer slides. Since it’s my hobby, I’m extremely picky...but Steve’s joints are tight and all is square. Excellent work!” Lise in Oyster Creek wanted a small study for herself in the back of the family room, next to a window overlooking Riverbend golf course. Lise says, “I saw Steve’s impressive work in a local publication. During our consult, he listened to my ideas and took measurements. Steve sent me a design via email and we worked until it was perfect. He constructed it in his shop, then delivered and installed it here. I was amazed at how easy Steve made the process, and the end result is

The Taste of Home
W
hen local kids like Andrew Salti, a senior at the University of Houston, come home from college, they make a beeline for one special place... Pepperoni’s. You just can’t get pizza that good anyplace else! Andrew’s dad, Ray founded the first Pepperoni’s back in 1990 as an old-style relaxed pizza parlor with a friendly and family-oriented atmosphere. He says, “As a parent who has raised three pizza-loving boys, I was concerned about the ingredients in the food my kids ate...so I decided to go all-natural and use only 100% unbleached, untreated wheat flour. Food should taste good...and be good for you, too!” Nothing is as delicious as a really well-made pizza. The team at Pepperoni’s masterfully assembles pies to order out with crusts made with organic flour, the perfect balance of tomato sauce, mozzarella and over twentyfive toppings including standards like pepperoni or fresh mushrooms and speciality toppings like meatballs,
eggplant, or artichoke hearts. Pepperoni’s also offers a gluten-free crust, as well as low-fat cheese and vegan cheese upon request. Although specializing in pizza, Pepperoni’s offers subs, salads, pastas, calzones, wings and desserts. Pepperoni’s first location was such as success that today you’ll find ten restaurants in the greater Houston area. Dine-in or order out for pizza made the right way every time. Over the last seven years, Ray opened two critically-acclaimed, farm-to-table restaurants: Ray’s Gourmet Country in Fulshear and Sorrel Urban Bistro in Houston (named one of the Top Ten New Restaurants in America of 2012 by Gayot Magazine) with its ever-changing daily menu. He says, “Whether friends and families gather for a casual meal, a fine dining experience, or order out for pizza, you deserve fresh, high-quality ingredients for delicious food you’ll feel good about eating. Only the best was good enough for my sons...and only the best will do for you and your family!”

NO TIES FOR FATHER’S DAY
DAD
DESERVES SOME THERAPY TOO! What Do You Give the Guy Who Has (or Can Build) Everything?
D
oesn’t Dad already have a closet full of ties and all the tools and golf clubs he needs? At Therapeutic Thai Massage, you’ll find a gift to help him recover from long days at work and improve his weekends…without taking up any space. Theo and Mona Vora, husband and wife owners of Therapeutic Thai Massage, say, “On Sunday June 15th, Father’s Day, we’ll have a special drink for all the fathers who come for a massage...they’ve earned it!” Formally trained in both Thailand and Texas, licensed massage therapist Mona says, “Our Thai Combination Massage combines the therapeutic benefits of Thai Massage with the deep relaxation of Hot Stone Massage and aromatherapeutic oil. Doctors, athletes, seniors, and busy commuters love the way it relieves soreness, improves circulation, and restores peace.” Massage therapists specialize in body mechanics, but Theo’s father, Ted Vora, specializes in mechanics of another type. He says, “As an engineer, I knew every oil company needed rigs with a fast turnaround. After studying the problem, I came up with an idea...and my customer loved it! I said, “This is how oil rigs should be designed. Making it simple leads to efficiency and safety. When the people who assemble it can understand your design, it’s safer and easier for everyone to use. Today our two most popular products include the fast, portable, and safe Rocket Rig and our rig skidding system, the Rig Walker.” “All the oil companies wanted that first design...and that’s how I built my company, Veristic, founded in 1998. The name means “to adhere strictly to the truth”...a perfect motto for engineers. When you are honest about your work and reasonable in your pricing, you’ll earn your client’s trust. Now that I’m almost ready for retirement, Veristic is run by smart, energetic young people, including my sons Theo and Charles. I know they will keep to our founding principle: simplicity leads to efficiency and safety.” For more information visit www.vengineer.com. “When you’re working on an engineering problem, it’s easy to lose track of time...and get pain in your neck and back. Therapeutic Thai Massage makes your body work again the way it should!”

“A
ir conditioning is one of those fields where you’re going on faith,” says Dan Hoover. “I know absolutely nothing about my air conditioner, so when someone starts spouting technical terms and telling me how much for parts and how much for labor and how much for freon...who knows if they’re telling the truth? You need someone you can trust like I trust All Out A/C.” “Years ago I used some other A/C company. They had a sales person come out with the team and everything he said ran up the bill. When they were done the total was $2500, so I thought it would be worthwhile to get a second opinion. Turns out they hadn’t even correctly identified the problem in the first place!” “I’ve known Bryan Bellamy through family for over twelve years. When I learned that he and Chance Kamp were the owners of All Out A/C, I knew I’d found an A/C company I could trust! Their team has always done an outstanding job working on both the A/ Cs in my home and both of the ones in my other property. Those houses and their A/C systems were new, but he’s handled all the maintenance and service perfectly.” “When I was talking with Bryan, I told him we had a “hot spot” in my daughter’s bedroom. It has one vent, but the room faces west and it really heats up in the afternoon. Bryan said he had an easy, inexpensive fix for that! They came out and ran another duct off our original A/C to a new vent in her room...and it looks like it’s always been there!” “Ever since I’ve recommended Bryan to my neighbors, my friends, and my family... and they’ve used him and recommend
him, too! When it’s 95 degrees outside and you’re desperate, you need an A/C company you can trust like All Out A/C. Call Mr. A/C for the straight story...he’s a good guy!” When it comes to comfort, nobody beats Mr. A/C and the team at All Out. Bryan says, “A new dual-speed unit will run in a lower, quieter, more energy-efficient setting….essentially it doesn’t have to work as hard to keep you cool. Customers have told us their electric bill dropped so much the new A/C actually paid for itself! Today you’ll enjoy limited time offers on qualifying systems including a Centerpoint instant rebate of up to $1450 and instant manufacturers rebates of up to $1200. We always offer quotes at no charge and we have 100% financing and options that include no payment for first whole year with approved credit. Don’t wait for an emergency to get a new energy-efficient A/C system...these deals won’t last!”
