01 Redesign of Dominican Motherhouse: An unbuilt project by Louis I Kahn Pennsylvania, United States Individual Project Architecture Design Lab 1 Prof. Arch. Michela Barosio (michela.barosio@polito.it) Semester 1, Master’s in Architecture Construction City, 2017 The re-design of a non-built project by Louis Kahn. The work consisted in using the complex typology of the Dominican Motherhouse to design, in the same location, a contemporary monastery characterized by brick vaults. The project exhibits a strong relationship between the two very different materials i.e brick and concrete and expresses the beauty when the two combine together. In order to achieve the same, the complex was designed using perforated brick walls with big arches that define the movement space in the complex along with the concrete vaults which when combined together, manage to produce a very unified effect.

Functions

As we approach towards functionality, one of the aims for us was to separate private & public spaces while maintaining a connection between them. For this reason, a level was introduced in between to segregate the spaces while keeping the connections intact. As in case of the kitchen, that partly goes underground with a vaulted roof which serves as a landscape feature while serving the function of ventilation and is connected to the refractory through a gazebo like structure. And the gazebos which have been placed alongside the dormitory express the same language.

of different sizes, which are self supporting along with frame structure inside which supports the floor in between the vault.

CHAPEL: The structure of chapel consists of concrete vaults

which are self supporting, thus eliminating the need for any other structural elements and giving an open space in the chapel.

REFRACTORY: The structure of refractory is enclosed by a concrete barrel vault which is self supporting along with a hanging floor inside that is supported by a huge column and cantilivered beams.

Massimiliano Lo Turco (massimiliano.loturco@polito.it) Semester 1, Master’s in Architecture Construction City, 2018 The main aim of this project was to understand the working of REVIT in a group of 2 by understanding and remaking a building completely. It involved understanding the interoperability of the software along with other basic functions required to make a project work.

03 The Forgotten Neighbourhood: Redevelopment of an abandoned neighborhood Pukou, China Individual Project , Architecture Design Lab 2 Prof. Arch. Marco Triscioglio (marco.trisciuoglio@polito.it) Semester 2, Master’s in Architecture Construction City, 2018

The site is a neighbourhood in the Pukou district of China which had been long forgotten. The project aims at redeveloping the site that has been abandoned by the authorities with the main focus to LEFT STREET MARKET as well as the whole neighbourhood. This has been achieved using the concept of FRAGMENTATION i.e the area being more open and fragmented as we move further. This has been done to make the site more inviting as well as create a barrier from the main road though keeping the links intact. This also helps in maintaining an ever

changing urban fabric which adds an element of surprise at each level. Also, the presence of river and heritage buildings is an added advantage to the site which have been very well taken care of in this proposal. Also, major focus has been laid on the typologies and their relationship with the external surroundings. Therefore, it can be concluded that once the site is completely developed and ready, it will no longer be a forgotten area but an area of maximum activity with the essence of Chinese culture always thriving inside.

04 Connecting Koliwada: Development Strategies for Koliwada, Dharavi Mumbai, India Individual Project , Architecture Thesis Prof. Arch. Valeria Federighi (valeria.federighi@polito.it) Semester 4, Master’s in Architecture Construction City, 2019-20 Koliwada is a small village in Dharavi that has been excluded from the Dharavi Redevelopment Plan. But the officials of Koliwada want to redevelop the area for themselves and in the process want to segregate the renters to achieve some private space.

Mumbai in India

Dharavi in Mumbai

Expansion of Dharavi through Koliwada

The idea of the people in power is to demolish everything in Koliwada

And reconstruct keeping one area for the owners and segregating the renters on the other side of the road in high-rise structures

Owners Renters

So I have developed a strategy for Koliwada to achieve the same in a less destructive manner. The main idea for Koliwada is to use the process of Incremental development with small interventions that can be carried out over time by the people with the help of Koli Jamaat. It involves a segregation of owners and renters through floors and the provision of community spaces in Koliwada.

Banquet Hall, Delhi, India Delhi, India Transform Design, 2015

The Banquet Hall has been designed to cater to the needs of the client i.e. to design a hall with a feeling of luxury and openness. Also, the aesthetics of the interiors as well as exteriors has been an important factor. The major requirement was to make the hall inviting and appropriate for weddings. Therefore, the same was achieved by designing a facade with the statues of angels depicting the “Goodwill and positive energy”. Also the perforated brick wall adds to the facade by putting emphasis on the angels.
