Community Center Chiasso, Switzerland atelier Angonese Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio Diploma 2020
The project location for my diploma is in Chiasso, on the Swiss-Italian border. The task is required to address the issues inherent in its proximity to the border by finding solutions for the overall city improvement. I chose to work on the industrial district in Chiasso’s downtown, to reuse and transform it into a new community centre. The main idea is to provide a wide range of services that are missing in Chiasso in order to bring together people of all ages and background and to support their lives. The main program consists of a library, a co-working space, workshops, places for conferences and events and an educational center. The first necessary step was to bring the existing warehouses back to life as the architecture memory of this place. Additionally, the renovation of the old residential building within new balconies and winter gardens is seen as a future strategy of the urban redevelopment and could be largely applicable to the other residential buildings of the city. Eventually, the old warehouses would be combined with newly erected buildings of prominent appearance and industrial style, such as the new long metal library and the glass brick tower for conferences and events.

Mediterranean house on Ponza, Italy atelier Aires Mateus Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio fisrt semester fifth year 2019
During this semester, we were asked to build a private villa on Ponza island, Italy. The challenge was in the freedom of the design as we were allowed to build virtually anything on any part of the site. The main idea of the project was to integrate the villa with its surrounding landscape. The house has a square-shaped platform with no windows or dividing walls, the only furniture made with stone is placed across the plan perimeter. Everything is set outdoor to give the feeling of living with nature. The house material is dark concrete similar to the color of the earth. The roof is raised on four blocks containing only the minimum spaces in which anyone could hide during bad weather conditions. Moreover, these blocks enclose the inner garden which is the most secret and intimate place in the house.

Goethe-Museum Weimar / Research Project atelier Boesch Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio second semester fourth year 2019
The research program of this semester was based on projects of a German architect Heinrich Tessenow. In 1931 he was faced with the task to design an extension of the Goethe National Museum in Weimar. A new building for the vast collection of literature and arts was supposed to be raised next to the Goethe’s historical residence as well as a new way of circulation for visitors. Its new main staircase was designed as a hinge between two different buildings. The study of Tessenow’s intervention and the analysis of Goethe’s house helped to realize representative concrete models of the staircases as main points of these buildings. Roughness of concrete and its entirety created a new perspective vision to the architect’s unbuilt project.

Metropolitan Gap
atelier E2A Architects Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio first semester third year 2017
The task of the firts semester was to rebuild the former Goethe House at Fifth Avenue in the New York City to the cultural center. It was a typical narrow, six-storey, palace-like building with a light limestone facade on the east side of the Central Park opposite the Metropolitan Museum. The decision was to maintain an existing building that has an important historical and design value and readjust it’s form into the new building that offers bigger and more flexible space. In spite of eight meters width limits a cultural center was created where it’s form follows different functions such as theater, exhibition spaces, library, cafes, atelier and apartments.

Total brick
atelier Walter Angonese Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio second semester second year 2016
The theme of the second semester was to create a housing project using only one material - brick. Only certain construction techniques could be applied in this case, for instance arches or catalan vaults. In spite of these limits I started with an idea to create diversity of the facade and building volumes. Inspired by Amsterdam canal houses, I played with the material and created four different patterns with diverse mortars and bricks dimension. In addition to this, I worked with a concept to create a healthy environment for the occupant. Each apartment has its own terace with a private garden.

Houseboat
atelier Walter Angonese Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio first semester second year 2015
As a task we had to create a Houseboat on the canal of Amsterdam regarding to the concept of comfort. I experimented with different spatial forms to find an unusual way of living. The final plan is a combination of circle rooms each of which has its own particular size adapted for comfortable living. The facade facing the street is totaly closed which creates privacy at home. At the same time, large glass openings on the canal side permit to beautiful river panoramas and a lot of daylight.

Vignetta
atelier Mario Botta / Gabriele Cappellato Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio second semester first year 2015
The project was to modifiy an existing historical place between Palazzo Turconi and Canavee, which are the two main buildings of the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio. The site has been empty for many years after the Vignetta bar was closed down. We were asked to design an extension of the campus that included an atelier for students, rooms for model making, cafeteria and an outside space for relaxing. Buildings are made of stone to blend in with the original retaining walls. The large atelier windows make use of the beautiful view of the trees and round fountain.

Chapel
National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, Kiyv first semester second year 2013
The project is situated on the hills behind the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kiev. In my chapel I tried to keep an idea of simplicity and purity with all respect to the religious architecture. The slight asymmetry of volumes create window openings on the right side that illuminate the inner space as well as the long cross openings on the back side of the chapel. Dark brick speaks about the gravity and monumentality of the building.
