2010-11 UMKC Athletics Annual Report
LETTER FROM TIM HALL DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dear Friends: On behalf of our coaches, staff, and most importantly, our student-athletes, I want to thank-you for your over arching support of the Kangaroos. In reviewing this annual report, you will see that we have continued to make great strides both on the playing venue and in the classroom during the 2010-11 season. During the 2010-11 academic year, we finished in sixth place in the final Summit League Commissioner’s Cup standings, with our men’s programs moving into third place in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports standings. Over the course of the year, four UMKC programs claimed Summit League regular season crowns with two advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Individually, our student-athletes had a great deal of success this past season, as 23 were honored as all-league performers, eight as Summit League All-Tournament selections, seven as Summit League All-Newcomers, six Players of the Year and one Newcomer of the Year, while four of our coaches were tabbed as Summit League Coach of Year. In the classroom, our student-athletes continued to have unprecedented success, as the department finished with a Summit League best 3.2 cumulative grade point average. Additionally, a total of 136 were Academic all-League honorees, 84 were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, and one was named a Second Team Academic all-American, the sixth ‘Roo in school history to earn allAmerican recognition. This year also saw the renovation of the bleachers inside the Swinney Recreation Center gymnasium, coinciding with the move back to the heart of the UMKC campus for both our men’s and women’s basketball programs. Each team received a tremendous boost from the move with the men setting a school record for consecutive home wins to open the season, and the second most home wins in a year with 11. As you continue to read about our many accomplishments, know that we are working hard not only for the success of today’s student-athletes, but also for the programs of the future. We will continue to use all the resources available to graduate our studentathletes and to put a program on the courts and fields for which you can be proud. We are also committed to our alumni and engaging the fans and friends of UMKC. This report is designed to give you a general synopsis into UMKC Athletics for the 2010-11 academic year. Should you have any specific questions about any information contained in the report, please contact Rob McCutcheon, Sports Information Director (mccutcheonrb@umkc.edu) or myself (halltw@umkc.edu) at your convenience. I also encourage you to follow all the action throughout the upcoming 2010-11 year on our newly redesigned athletics web site, www.UMKCKangaroos.com or via Twitter @ TheUMKCRoos. Go ‘Roos! Timothy W. 2010 HALL OF FAME CLASS The UMKC Athletics Department inducted the 2009 Hall of Fame class on Jan. 23, 2010, at the Downtown Marriott in Kansas City. The seven person class consisted of seven former student-athletes and one former coach/administrator. Below is a complete run down of the Hall of Fame inductees. Sonya Ahmed, Women’s Track and Field Ahmed was a standout both athletically and academically during her ‘Roo career. In 2000-01 and 2001-02, Ahmed was named the Mid-Con Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which is considered the highest honor presented by the league each year. Ahmed was also a two-time Academic All-America selection, earning first team honors in 2002 and a third team nod in 2000. Athletically, Ahmed was the 2002 Mid-Con outdoor pole vault champion, and she still holds the school record in the event both indoors (11-11 1/4) and outdoors (11-6 1/4). Grant Dennis, Men’s Track and Field Dennis, who qualified for the 2001 NCAA Championships, was a three-time Mid-Con outdoor champion in the decathlon from 19992001. The UMKC record holder in the indoor pentathlon (3,733 pts.) and outdoor decathlon (7,413 pts.) helped the ‘Roos to two Mid-Con Outdoor and one Mid-Con indoor title during his career. Craig Gansen, Men’s Tennis Gansen was a four-time all-Mid-Con selection as a ‘Roo, earning first team honors from 1997-99 and a second team accolade in 1996. During his time at UMKC, Gansen led his squad to a pair of regular season titles (1998, 1999) and a Mid-Con Tournament crown in 1999, which led the ‘Roos to their first ever NCAA Tournament berth. Gansen closed out his career as the school record holder for singles wins (48) and singles winning percentage (.667), while also being tied for the most doubles victories in the annals (44). Dan Hilson, Men’s Soccer Hilson was a three-time all-Mid-Con selection. The 2002 Third Team NSCAA all-Midwest Region selection was a key member of the UMKC men’s soccer team that earned a pair of NCAA Tournament berths in both 2001 and 2003. The 2001 squad posted an opening round victory over WisconsinMilwaukee, which is the first and only NCAA win in school history. Hilson, who led the squad in assists all four years, still ranks as the UMKC record holder in assists (30), while coming in at second in career points (62).
Katy Kampschroeder-True, Volleyball A two-time Mid-Con Setter of the Year, the standout setter was a three-time all-Mid-Con selection during her playing days in Blue and Gold, earning first team honors in both 1996 and 1997. David Robinson, Men’s Basketball Robinson, who was the first four-year letterwinner in the Division I era, posted 20 20-point games and three 30-point contests during his ‘Roo career. The seven footer, who led UMKC to wins over the likes of Cincinnati, Creighton and Texas A&M during his playing career, is the school record holder in career field goal percentage (.584), while ranking second in blocks (126) and third in doubledoubles (11). Penny Waggener, Women’s Basketball Waggener, who helped the ‘Roos to a pair of NAIA National Tournament appearances, was a three-time NAIA all-District 16 selection during her career, and an NAIA Honorable Mention AllAmerican in 1984-85. In 1999, Krueger’s women’s squad won the conference “double”, winning both the indoor and outdoor championships. The men’s squad also won the 1999 MidCon Outdoor title.
