3 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES 4 SUMMIT LEAGUE REGULAR SEASON TITLES The 2012 Kangaroos men’s soccer team heads into the season looking to bounce back from a season of almosts. The ‘Roos missed the conference tournament for just the second time in the 14-year tenure of Head Coach Rick Benben, falling just one point short. They put up a 5-9-3 overall record, and went 2-2-2 in Summit League play. The ‘Roos were close to making a return trip to the tournament though, with a rain-shortened tie at ORU and two double overtime contests that ended in a tie and a loss against IPFW and Western Illinois looming large at year’s end. It’s a new year though, and the 2012 ‘Roos are picked to finish second in the Summit League preseason coaches poll, just behind defending league champion WIU. The squad returns the Summit League Newcomer of the Year in sophomore forward Jordan Rideout, along with senior forward/ midfielder and two-time all-league selection David Sarabia. In all, six starters return, while a top-notch recruiting class on nine newcomers looks to fill some gaps. The incoming class includes five transfers, while Kansas City gets two players back from a redshirt season that are expected to immediately contribute to the lineup in Guerrero Pino and Sylvester Yiadom. The ‘Roos have lofty expectations as always, and to meet those goals, Benben says they have to score more goals. Last year Kansas City tallied only 19 goals in 17 games, while allowing 30. With a year of experience playing together for the returners, plus the addition of some new talent, the staff feels that will change on both ends of the field, and help the ‘Roos move back to the top of the standings. “We always have the same goals.” Benben said, “We really want to play well every day, and that will lead to our other goals, win the league, win the conference tournament, and qualify for the NCAA Tournament.” There will be a some changes to the lineup, but Benben feels PAGE

4

one of the major keys for success will be how well the new meshes with the old. “There is a really fine line between winning and losing at this level.” Benben said, “We have to be solid and consistent in the back, especially at the goalkeeper position. We also need to create more chances going forward. The results will take care of themselves.”

The Forwards

The ‘Roos return both starters in Sarabia and Rideout, while adding players that will be able to compete for time right away in junior transfer Tom Gaus and freshman standout Broc Cramer. Some formation changes will also allow junior Zach Balthazar to move up top or out wide after starting 16 games in the midfield a year ago. Rideout was a first-team all-league pick after leading the squad with seven goals last year, including four in the last three games of the year. Sarabia started the season as the starting goalkeeper, but was switched back to forward just a few games into the season. He has now gone through the entire offseason training as a forward, and looks to crack the career top 10 in goals, as he boasts 14 during his career in the Blue and Gold. “Obviously we will look for Jordan and David to score goals for us this season, but we feel like we can get contributions from others like Zach, Tom and Broc as well.” Benben said. Gaus comes to UMKC from Tulsa, where he played his first two seasons. Originally from St. Louis, Mo., he was an award winning forward at DeSmet Jesuit High School. He saw action in nine matches as a sophomore, scoring a goal against Marshall. Cramer was a record-setting all-state forward at Wichita Northwest High School, scoring 21 goals and grabbing 17 assists while leading the squad to a perfect 21-0 record and a state championship. All five are expected to see time this fall, giving the ‘Roos plenty of options up top.

The Midfielders

The midfield will also have a different look as several starters departed, but the bulk of the incoming class was devoted to plugging holes in the midfield. Balthazar will be in the mix there, as well as returning redshirt Sylvester Yiadom. The Accra, Ghana native is just as versatile as Balthazar, as both can play in the midfield and up top. Also returning for his senior season will be outside midfielder Mo Ramahi. He tallied a goal and an assist last season. New to the mix are a trio of talented junior college transfers in David Coulter, Tom McCarthy and Ashley Reece. Benben expects all three to contribute to the lineup right away. “We need the new players to be able to come in and mesh with the returning core in the midfield if we are going to be successful this year.” Benben said, “We are very excited about the amount of options we have in this area.”

anchoring the central defense the entire season. Pino enters the lineup after redshirting last year, but practiced with the squad all year to earn his spot in the middle. Competing for the other outside defender position will be sophomore Franklin Washington, who has played nearly every position on the field in the last two seasons.

Coulter, a junior, comes to Kansas City from Pratt C.C. in Kansas, and is a native of Glasgow, Scotland. He was a secondteam all-conference selection and team captain there.

Also in the mix is talented junior transfer Diego Figueroa, who comes in from Lincoln C.C. in Illinois. A native of Miami, Fla., he helped Lincoln to a fifth place national finish a year ago. He will be looking to play on the outside as well.

McCarthy is also a junior, and comes to UMKC from Tyler J.C. in Texas. He hails from Kings Lynn, England and helped Tyler to a national title as a freshman, before going to the Final Four as a sophomore.

Providing depth at defender is sophomore Robert Barkoff, who is making the move from midfield to defender this fall.

Reece also attended Tyler last year, but comes to UMKC as a sophomore. The Manchester, England product tallied seven goals as a freshman, along with three assists. The midfield position has plenty of options, with sophomore Andres Aristizabal, freshman Roberto Albuquerque, and freshman Stephen Koeller also battling for playing time. Koeller and Albuquereque both had award-winning careers in big city high school and club programs, with Albuquerque coming out of the Chicago area, and Koeller from St. Louis.

The Defenders

The ‘Roos have a solid back line returning as junior Jeffrey Stezovsky returns on the outside, while sophomore Michael Oakley and junior Guerrero Pino are in the middle. “We feel really good about this position.” Benben said, “If we can stay healthy, we have several all-conference caliber players back there. Stezovsky battled injuries last season to see action in 11 games, but started every game as a freshman, earning league allnewcomer team honors. Oakley was named to the all-newcomer team a year ago,

The Goalkeepers

Junior Kevin Corby and senior Kyle Martin split time a year ago in the net, with mixed results. The team had a 1.73 goals against average, and the coaching staff wants that number to be closer to or below 1.00 this fall. Also jumping in the mix for the starting spot with these two is talented freshman Connor Sparrow. Corby posted a team-best 53 saves last season, while Martin led the club with a 1.46 goals against average. Sparrow comes to UMKC after posting 14 shutouts a year ago for Vianney High School in St. Louis, Mo. “This is going to be a very competitive position in preseason, which is good for us.” Benben said, “All three guys bring different skill sets and each will have their chance to earn the starting spot.”

The Schedule

‘Roos have one of the toughest schedules in the league this season, facing six teams that have made the NCAA Tournament in the last two seasons. It starts on Aug. 25 when UMKC heads to Tulsa to battle the Golden Hurricane, followed by the home opener against Missouri Valley co-champ Missouri State on Aug. 28. Other NCAA teams include Creighton, who was in the Final Four of the College Cup in 2011.

HC

Rick Benben SIU Edwardsville, 1973 15th Season

The longest tenured and most successful coach in UMKC men’s soccer history, Rick Benben is entering his 15th season at the helm of the Kangaroos.

three on the second-team, and two on the all-newcomer squad. Sosa also became the first ever ‘Roo to be named first-team NSCAA All-Midwest Region.

Under his guidance, UMKC has captured four Summit League regular season soccer titles and has made three appearances in the NCAA College Cup with the most recent appearance coming in 2008. Benben, the fourth head coach in the Division I era, begins the 2012 season with 105 wins to his credit, and he has had more than 81 student-athletes earn all-league recognition and 15 players be named to all-region squads. Post season play has been a norm in Benben’s career, as he has guided the ‘Roos to the league tournament in 12 of his 14 seasons on the sidelines.

In 2009, Benben guided the ‘Roos to a 7-102 overall record and the squad advanced to The Summit League Tournament final for the third time in four seasons. Benben’s squad was an offensive jugernaut, as it led the league in scoring for the second straight season finishing with 31 goals. The UMKC coaching veteran coached a school record five First Team all-Summit League honorees and had a pair of student-athletes garner major awards, as Bryan Perez became the second straight ‘Roo to earn Summit League Offensive Player of the Year honor, while David Sarabia was the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Perez was also tabbed as an NSCAA all-Region honoree for the third straight year - the only player in school history to accomplish the feat.

In 2011 the ‘Roos posted a 5-9-3 overall mark after losing several key players from the season before. Despite that, the ‘Roos managed to make progress throughout the season, including a win over Pac-12 opponent Oregon State on the road. UMKC finished 2-2-2 in conference play, just a point shy of qualifying for the league tournament. He also coached the Summit League Freshman of the Year (Jordan Rideout) and two first-team all-league selections, as well as two members of the All-Newcomer Team. Benben led the Kangaroos to their fourth regular season conference championship in 2010, posting a 10-5-3 overall record, and a 4-1-1 mark in league play to earn Summit League Coach of the Year for the fourth time. The ‘Roos led the conference in both goals (1.28 pg) and goals against average (0.80 pg). They also had the league’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in John Bayron Sosa and Brian Quintana, respectively. UMKC also had three players on the all-leage first team, PAGE

Year honors during his 14-year tenure with the most recent accolade coming on the heels of the 2003 campaign. The Kangaroos finished the season with a 10-73 overall record (5-1-0 conference) and an appearance in the NCAA College Cup. The squad captured the first league “double” in school history as they finished atop the regular season table before capturing the conference tournament championship. In 2001, Benben earned the Mid-Con Coach of the Year honors after guiding his team to the best season in UMKC’s Division I history, putting together a 12-7-1 overall record and winning the first league tournament championship in school history. With their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Blue-and-Gold picked up the only NCAA Tournament win for any team sport, knocking off Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first round by a 2-1 overtime scoreline.

During the 2008 campaign, Benben guided the ‘Roos to 10 victories, which were the most for the program since 2003. UMKC received national recognition during the season, as the squad posted a 1-0 victory at No. 3 Creighton in September. The win helped the ‘Roos finish the year with a solid 2-1-1 record against ranked foes. Benben coached two players to NSCAA all-Region Second Team honors in 2008 in Brian Harris and Perez. It was the second straight year that Perez had garnered allregion recognition under Benben’s watch. Harris, meanwhile, earned Summit League praise, when he became UMKC’s first player to garner Offensive Player of the Year honors. Benben then led his squad to The Summit League Tournament title - the third in school history. Benben has claimed three Coach of the

Head Coach Rick Benben has helped the ‘Roos finish in the top four of the Summit League in 12 of his 13 seasons at the helm.

With his success on the field, the Kangaroos were recognized for their achievements. Larry Scheller was named the Mid-Con Player of the Year to go along with honorable mention College Soccer News all-America honors. Scheller still is the only player in school history to receive all-America accolades. Benben received his first Coach of the Year nod in his second season on the sidelines for the ‘Roos after he guided the squad to an 11-6-0 record. Under his direction, Erik Kuster netted nine goals to earn the MidCon Player of the Year accolade. In addition to his success on the field, the ‘Roos have been honored for their work in the classroom under Benben’s tutelage. Garret Guthrie earned ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic allAmerica honors and was a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, while Brian Harris was a 2008 NSCAA College Scholar all-American. In addition, the ‘Roos have had 10 academic all-region honors during Benben’s tenure. In addition to his success with UMKC, Benben has a storied soccer career. As a player at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, he was a three-year letterwinner at goalkeeper, backstopping the squad to a national championship in 1972.

Benben became an assistant coach at SIUE after his graduation in 1973, helping to lead the team to another national championship in 1979. In 2008, Benben was recognized by his alma mater for his athletic achievements, as he was selected to the school’s Hall of Fame. In 1982, Benben joined the professional ranks, as he became assistant coach and director of player personnel for the Kansas City Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He was then named head coach of the Comets in 1984, midway through the 1983-84 season. His squad recovered to finish fourth in the Western Division, falling in a five-game playoff series to the St. Louis Steamers. During his tenure with the Comets, he missed the playoffs just once, during the 1986-87 season, his final full season with the team. Since 1987, he has been the director of Rick Benben Soccer Camps in Lenexa, Kan., helping to educate young elite-level soccer players during the summer. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and health in 1973 and a master’s degree in education administration and supervision in 1976, both from SIUE. Kangaroos In The Pros Former UMKC men’s soccer player Geoff Miles helped the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting KC) to a 2-1 win over Mexican Primera Division side Atlas AC de Guadalajara on Friday, July 10, 2008 at Community America Ballpark. The former Kangaroo replaced midfielder Lance Watson just before stoppage time, with the Wizards scoring the game-winner in the second minute of added time. Miles, who played for UMKC from 2001-2003, trained with the Wizards throughout the 2008 Major League Soccer campaign. He served as a guest player in the MLS Reserve division, appearing in two matches for the Wizards. He tallied a goal in the league, scoring a game-tying goal in Kansas City’s 2-2 draw against New England on April 10, 2008. Former ‘Roo Bryan Perez (2006-09) spent the 2011 season as a member of Des Moines Menace in the PDL, and has since been invited to trial in the Chilean league with the legendary Club de Deportes Cobreloa.
